CSE597F Computational Photography, Spring 2010 Assignment 1, due Jan 22 This week we would like you to get familiar with the basics of controlling your camera in manual mode, and uploading/posting images to our course flickr group page. Here are the specifics of what we would like you to do: 1) if you haven’t done so already, get yourself a flickr account and join our flickr group page. To get a flickr account, you will first need a yahoo account. However, both yahoo and flickr accounts are free. Once you have a flickr account, go to http://www.flickr.com/groups/psucompphoto/ and click on “Join” to send a request to join our group. We will then add you to the group as soon as we see your request. 2) we’d like you to take at least 6 photos that demonstrate control of camera zoom, shutter speed and aperture. If you are an old hand at photography, this part of the assignment will be very easy. If you have never used your camera in anything other than “auto” mode before, the first step may be to get out your user manual and find out where the shutter and aperture controls are, and how to use them! 2.1) take a pair of images demonstrating wide angle vs narrow angle perspective effects on the same object. An example from the lecture notes is below. This is accomplished by changing your distance to the object while also changing zoom. 2.2) take a pair of images demonstrating fast versus slow shutter speed. Fast shutter speeds have the effect of freezing moving objects so that they appear clearly in the image, while slow shutter speeds yield motion blur. An example from the lecture notes is below. Slow shutter speeds are also useful for taking pictures in low‐light conditions.
