CSI: WANTED CSI: WANTED Domain IIa: Recognizing Facial Identity Domain IIa: Recognizing Facial Identity
GOAL:GOAL: The goal of CSI: Wanted is to promote skills in understanding facial identity by
making identity judgments across changes in featural information.
OBJECTIVEOBJECTIVE :: The child will be required to match the facial identities presented in
the “Wanted Person’s Profiles” to the identities in the “Set of 56 Identity Cards”. The identity cards are comprised of subsets featuring different levels of difficulty. Specifically, the child is challenged to make identity judgements based on whole face information as well as in the absence certain identifying face features such as mouth and eye information and, non-‐face identifying features such as hair, ears, and accessories. Ideally, this activity can be played one-‐to-‐one (2 players) or, in a group of 4 or 8 players.
MATERIALS:MATERIALS: • Printable “Wanted Persons Profiles” cards • Printable “Set of 56 Identity Cards”. Subsets represent relative increases in
the level of difficulty (1 = easiest → 7 = most difficult). Subset 1 – Whole Face Subset 2 – Eyes Occluded Subset 3 – Mouth Occluded Subset 4 – Balaclava (whole face open)
Subset 5 – Balaclava (lower face open) Subset 6 – Balaclava (upper face open) Subset 7 – Balaclava (eyes/mouth open)
• Optional printable tally chart • Dice • Scissors • Glue or tape
PROCEDURE:PROCEDURE: Step 1: Print & Cut With the child(ren), print the “Wanted Persons Profiles”, the “Set of 56 Identity Cards”, and the tally chart. Using scissors (or a paper-‐cutter), cut out the identity cards by
cutting along the dotted lines. There is no need to cut out the profiles cards. It is a good idea to write the profile number (i.e. #01, #02, etc.) on the backs of the identity cards before cutting them out so that you can check your answers. The profile numbers can be found on the “Wanted Persons Profiles” and the identities in each identity card subset appear in the same order as the profiles card set. Store the subsets separately. Printing on heavier paper such as card stock will make stronger profile and identity cards. Laminating is a good option for those who would like to re-‐use their cards. Step 2: Be a CSI! Explain to the child(ren), that they will be CSIs (Crime Scene Investigators) who have to identify persons wanted by authorities for crimes committed. After reviewing a wanted persons profile, they’re job will be to correctly identify the perpetrator from a police line-‐up of 8 offenders. Sometimes it will be more difficult to judge an identity because certain features might be covered. You (as the tutor) can assist at any point and in any way the child needs. Here’s how to play:
1. Choose a subset from the “Set of 56 Identity Cards”. Most people work through the levels (easier to more difficult).
2. Shuffle the “Wanted Persons Profiles” cards and place them face down on the table.
3. Role the dice to determine which player will go first. Subsequent player turns can occur in a clock-‐wise fashion.
4. The player shuffles the identity card subset and then, in front of themselves, spreads them out in a line face up.
5. The player draws a profile card, reads the profile, studies the face and name (or #), and then places the card under the stack of profile cards.
6. The player looks at the police line up and chooses the identity that matches the profile by saying the perpetrator’s name (or #). An optional tally chart is provided for those who would like to keep score of correct identifications.
7. Each player takes they’re turn repeating steps 3-‐6 until all 8 profiles have been identified. Then move on to a subsequent identity card subset!
8. Challenger! Create a really challenging subset of 8 identity cards by mixing cards from the other subsets. Just make sure that you have chosen 8 different identities (#01-‐#08).
