Safe Drinking Water - Special CSR Project

CSR INITIATIVES Max Healthcare is committed towards Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Being in the “Business of Life”, there has been a conscious effort to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged through Max India Foundation, our CSR arm. The Company’s mission is to strive for inclusive growth by contributing towards society in form of supporting causes on the health and well being platform. The Company’s CSR agenda is being driven by Max India Foundation, with focus on issue of healthcare, health & hygiene awareness, etc. Lack of funds to pay for high healthcare costs [out-of-pocket expense] coupled with unavailability of qualified healthcare professionals are major challenges encountered by the underprivileged. Max Healthcare as part of its CSR initiatives through Max India Foundation tries to address the same. The health experts – doctors, nurses and pharmacists –from 14 Max Hospitals spread across Delhi NCR, Punjab and Uttrakhand volunteer their expert services towards conducting Health checkup camps, immunization camps and health awareness sessions. Given the impeccable standards of service excellence of doctors and nurses with Max Healthcare, the quality of services rendered to the underprivileged is of good quality and valued very highly by the marginalized.

General Health camps & Multi-Speciality camps

Health camp is one of the major regular CSR initiatives of Max Healthcare. Max India Foundation conducts general health check up camps for the underprivileged wherein doctor and a nurse from Max Healthcare screens the patients. The health camps are held across different states/regions where Max Healthcare hospitals are located. Also on special case basis, the doctors conduct camps in other states of India as per the requirement e.g. Leh, Bodh Gaya, etc. Further as per the need of the community, multispeciality health check up camps are held with specialist doctors checking-up for gynecological, pediatric, ophthalmology, oncology, dental or diabetic issues. The underprivileged appreciate quality services of specialists at their doorstep which are free of cost.

MULTI SPECIALITY HEALTH CAMPS – A Case Story of Dhakrani Village

Dhakrani is one of the villages adopted by Max India Foundation in Dehradun, Uttrakhand since 2015. In order to improve the lives of the people, a number of initiatives on healthcare, sanitation and waste management are being implemented in the village with population of over 20,000. As per the baseline survey, the villagers of Dhakrani have limited access to good health care facilities. In terms of accessibility, the nearest Primary Health Centre is at Herbertpur (3 kms away), Civil Hospital is at Vikas Nagar (8kms away) and District Hospital is at Dehradun (37kms away). The most common health issues among women are Anaemia, Thyroid, BP, TB and STD’s whereas children mostly suffer from malnutrition, worm infection, skin disease and pneumonia. Smoking and alcohol consumption is common amongst the men. In order to address the gap, Max Healthcare through Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun has been organizing multi-speciality health camps for the villages.

So far 22 multi-speciality camps have been held reachcing to 5447 beneficiaries. An average of nearly 250 beneficiaries has been reached through each camp which shows that the demand is

high. Conscious efforts have been made to align specialist doctors - Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, opthalmist, etc as per the health needs of the community. Super speciality health camps benefit patients to avail quality services from specialists which they would not have access to otherwise. Further, the elderly and women have benefitted significantly from the health camps since they do not have to travel long distances or pay any fees which is otherwise an impediment and reason for neglecting health needs. During the multi-speciality camp held on 14th July 2016, a group of women came from Vikasnagar, which is nearly 7 kilometres from Dhakrani. When asked the reason for coming from such far off distance, their reply was, “we get the information about health camps from our daughters who are married in families of Dhakrani village and we immediately plan to travel here because we get great service from the doctors at the camp. We do not have good health centres around our village and therefore we really appreciate what Max India is doing here”. Dr. Anindita Banerjee from Max Super Specialty Hospital Dehradun, who serves at these health camps occasionally, shares, “people come from as far as 10 kms away to avail the camp facility because they have faith in quality of our services”.

Doctor Speaks...

Dr. Pankaj Jhaldiyal,

Consultant & Incharge – Dept. of Emergency & Trauma

Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun

“It is indeed a very gratifying experience being able to serve the community at grass root level. I congratulate MIF for their initiative and great service commitment to community.”

Immunization

India accounts for the largest number of children (i.e. 7.4 million) who are not immunized. In order to bridge the gap, Max India Foundation and Max Healthcare focus on protecting underprivileged children in the age group of 0-12 years who are Not Immunized or Partially Immunized. Children are vaccinated against MMR, DPT, Hepatitis-B and Typhoid as per the guidelines of WHO. The program mandate is to “close the immunization gap”. The intervention has brought positive impact by reducing the dropout rate of school children and improving life expectancy.

Health Awareness

Strong emphasis is laid on health and hygiene awareness sessions in order to promote healthy behavioural practices among the community members. Doctors conduct health awareness sessions on issues of nutritious diet, dental health, hand wash and sanitation, menstrual health, vector borne diseases, cancer awareness and other health topics. This is based on the premise that preventive health care yields better outcomes as well as returns in the long term. Special mention needs to be the No Tobacco campaign which is being spearheaded by the Department of Oncology, Max Healthcare.

Campaign against the use of Tobacco

Tobacco kills over one million people in India, therefore, MIF and Max Healthcare in partnership with Sambandh Health Foundation have been running a campaign against tobacco to save the future generations of Delhi. The campaign seeks to ensure strict enforcement of The Cigarettes & Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA) in and around schools and in public places to make Delhi into a healthier capital. The campaign was launched on 28 May 2016 in the presence of Special Commissioner (Law & Order) Delhi Police, Mr. P Kamaraj. The pledge supporting this initiative was also signed by Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi.

So far, training and sensitization program has been conducted in six districts of Delhi including South, Outer, New Delhi, West, East and North. So far, a total of 1200 police officials have been trained and sensitized on the COTPA Law. Doctors from Max Healthcare, Oncology Centre have been involved in this training program.

• On 29th Jun’17, launched Tobacco Free Educational Institutes (TEFI) in Delhi to broaden work on COTPA [since surveys confirm that more than 90% children take up smoking before turning 18].

• Plan to start with 742 schools of North Delhi Municipal Corporation

Celebrate ME

Celebrate ME, an annual campaign started in 2015 aims for spreading awareness about cancer, raising funds as well as celebrating the spirit of cancer survivors who overcome odds and emerge triumphant. Top Oncologists from Max Healthcare participated in a panel discussion titled “Ground Realities” sharing facts on the causes, treatment, issues and affordability of the cancer disease. Mrs. Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Women & Child Development, Government of India was the chief guest on the occasion [1st October 2016].

Testimonial of Doctor: That’s the earning of a lifetime....

Extremely passionate about his profession, Dr. Rafiq is one of the doctors from Max Healthcare who is looking for an opportunity to serve the underprivileged. He says, “At the health camps organized by the Foundation, the doctors are without elaborate facilities and equipment. But when you talk to the patients and counsel them at the camps, the amount of gratitude in their eyes is immensely satisfying. They never complain and are really excited when you are talking about their health. These patients respect you and that’s the earning of a lifetime.”

“It is not always important to have the right conditions, but most important is to have the right attitude of a human being – and that is the sense of service. And that is what fascinates me about the work of the Foundation”, smiles Dr. Rafiq.

Safe Drinking Water - Special CSR Project

It is an undisputable fact that there is a strong correlation between water and health. In fact, the burden of disease gets significantly reduced by access to clean and safe drinking water. In light of the same, 10 South Delhi Municipal Corporation Schools have been provided with safe drinking water facility. 6 schools provided with water purifier in March 2017 whereas 4 were provided with facility in June 2017. SUMMING UP

Max Healthcare’s CSR agenda that is being driven by Max India Foundation has helped free the underprivileged from being at the mercy of quacks who in many cases jeopardize their health. Added to this, all these world class services reach the community free of cost since at Max we believe that good health is the right of every Indian. Therefore, the health interventions have been successful in addressing key challenges of poor accountability, low-quality care, lack of health awareness and limited access to health facilities in the domain of health care.

The health care model devised jointly by Max India Foundation and Max Healthcare has the right mix of interventions to address the immediate healthcare needs of the community as well as to create a long term sustainable model of development.
