Corporate Status:- The company is incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 and is wholly owned by the Government of India (GOI).

Business:- Engaged in the mining of coal, coal based products and mining consultancy.

and others; is first Joint Stock Coal Company in India. Early 1900s Capacity at 6 million tones per annum 1955-56 Focus on Coal Industry; capacity up to 38.4 Million

tones. 1956 National Coal Development Corporation (NCDC)

formed to explore and expand coal mining in Public Sector


1972 Coking Coal Industry Nationalized, Bharat Coking Coal Limited formed to manage operations of all Coking Coal mines in Jharia Coalfield.

1975 Coal India Limited formed as holding Company with 5 subsidiaries viz. BCCL, CCL,WCL, ECL and CMPDI.

1985 Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) carved out of CCL and WCL.

1992 Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) formed out of SECL to manage the Talcher and IB Valley Coalfields in Orissa.

2007 coal India limited & four of its subsidiaries, viz, NCL,

SECL, MCL, was accorded coveted “Mini Ratna” status.

Coal India Limited, a Navratna Company, cares not only for its employees but also the society, as a whole.

In this pretext, Coal India has undertaken a variety of CSR activities at CIL (HQ), Kolkata and at the Subsidiaries.


The coal India Limited is also focus on the health sector for provide basic health care facility to people living in village as well as urban area. Such as,

Medical camp general and issue base, Mobile clinic van in different-different area, Health Awareness programme(Aids, Family Planning

etc) Mother & Child Care Project.


Several camps were set up by CIL in different areas of Bharatgarh, Jharkhali and Ramchandra Khali for AILA victims.

CIL has treated An average, about 2000 patients everyday. The Medical Relief Teams of CIL traveled by boat and on foot, to more

and more interior villages and served the patients of Murarikhali, Girish Khali and Itkhali.

There was a huge demand of medicines which was replenished from time to time by CIL on the advise of the treating Doctors.

On 6.6.09, SDO - Canning placed a requirement of Rice, Dal and Baby food.

A cheque of Rs. 10 Lakhs was received from Western Coalfields Limited, which was used for procurement of Medicines, Rice, Dal, Baby Food and Tarpaulin.


The Medical Relief Teams, in a span of Twelve days, from 2.6.09 to 13.6.09, treated about 20000 patients. Baby food, Food grains & Tarpaulin were provided to the villagers through Block Development Officer, Basanti Block, South 24 Parganas. West Bengal.

A bank draft amounting to Rs.26,000/- and 6 bags of clothings were handed over to Respected Swami of Bharat Sevasharam Sangha, Kolkata, which were distributed among the AILA victims. The money and clothings were just a humble donation by the CIL(HQ) employees.

Quality of life at work place and living place contribute

significantly in achieving the aims of the Company. The

coal mines are mostly situated in isolated areas where

facilities of modern living are lacking. Besides this, the

nature of work of the employees engaged in coal industry

is very difficult and hazardous. Keeping these facts in

view, the Company has been endeavouring to improve the

basic needs and facilities of the employees & community.


Coming under a request from the State Government, The

Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) has reportedly agreed to set

up a Medical College at Talcher. A decision to this effect was

taken at a high-level joint meeting between the Coal India

Limited (CIL) Chairman Partha S Bhattacharjee and Chief

Minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat April 25th 2008

Coal India gives special impetus for promotion of Sports and

Cultural activities for the employees & local peoples. Every

year sports events in 15 different disciplines are organized by

CIL and its subsidiaries under the aegis of Coal India Sports

Promotion Board. Inter Colliery & Inter Area level sports &

Cultural meets are also held in subsidiary level. Rural sports

and Handicapped sports are important events in the subsidiary

level.


CIL as a part of its welfare & CSR activities has given considerable emphasis on providing better educational facilities to the children of its employees as well as those of local populace.

The company is providing financial assistance/infra-structural facilities to schools running under agreement with CIL In addition Company is also providing financial assistance to Private Committee’s Managed Schools functioning under its command Area.


In order to encourage the Sons/Daughters of the

employees of Coal India Limited, provide two types of

Scholarship namely Merit and General

Scholarship are being given as per the prescribed

terms and conditions.


As a part of Corporate Social Responsibility,

Grant/Donations/Sponsorship of events are also being

given to renowned NGOs by CIL.
