In Memoriam
Mrs Karen Steward – Rainsong SheltiesOctober 6, 1953 - September 12, 2014
Karen Steward died on the 12th of September 2014 in a car accident just
after she retired from her nursing career and three weeks short of her 61st
birthday. Karen was on her way to agility trials in Quesnel looking forward
to fun and successful runs with her three dogs. Her beloved dog Jian also
died as a result of the accident.
Karen moved to Hazelton B.C. from London Ontario to take up a position as
Head Nurse at the Wrinch Memorial Hospital in 1982. Karen became enam-
ored with the Sheltie breed after attending obedience classes with one of
Judy’s dogs. The next year, 1984, Karen bought her first puppy from Judy,
Kiko. This was the beginning of her very successful adventure in shelties.
Kiko was first and foremost a beloved companion. She went everywhere with Karen and after Karen’s marriage to John Steward in 1985 she
traveled to Hazelton daily with Karen who continued to work at the Hazelton hospital till l992 when she decided she had enough of travelling.
Karen put a championship and CD on Kiko and with her started her breeding program. Karen bred only seven litters from 1987 till 2010.
These litters produced many champions, starting with her first in 1987. Two of the puppies, Vicky and Robin, were multi group winners cul-
minating in a Best in Show for Vicky. From then on each litter had at least one champion if not two. Karen also did obedience with each of
her dogs living with her and in the last years she added agility to her repertoire of achievements. Her last litter in 2010 of four puppies has
now two champion males and two pointed females. Jian had achieved his Grand champion title in May 2014 along with his CD. He had al-
ready embarked on his agility career before his death. Karen was looking forward to breeding his pointed sister, Fleur, this coming spring to
a half brother of my female, Jazz, because of the success of that breeding in 2013.
Karen was not only a sheltie enthusiast but also had other talents. She was an avid gardener, did lovely needlework, enjoyed quilting, be-
longed to a Sweet harmony choir, (barbershop style music) and loved reading usually before falling to sleep at night surrounded by her dogs.
(in crates of course).
Judy Wass – Karen’s longtime friend.
I knew Karen for many years. When I lived in Williams Lake, I saw her and Judy a lot at the Prince
George Shows. I was up at the Prince George Dog show this year that was my first time in a long
time. Karen was set up next to me so we had lots of chats. She was telling me how her hubby had
passed away and that she had had a hard time of it, but was starting to feel much better. Starting
to enjoy life again. Karen always had something nice to say about people even though she may not
have liked them. She was a kind person, very devoted to her shelties and a very long time friend of
Judy Wass. I always saw them together at the shows. It says something about a person if you can
keep up a friendship for that long. I was very sad and shocked to hear about her accident. She had
so much more life to live. I know the people that knew Karen will miss her smiling charm. We will
be thinking of you Karen...

OTCH. ELDEE DASH BI-NIGHTRN CGN SDDA, SD-A SP
In 2013 I heard about the new exciting dog activity, Sporting Detection Dogs. The dogs are trained much the same way as drugor bomb dogs but with the legal and safe substances, essential oils of Wintergreen, Pine and Thyme. A drop of the substance ishidden (unknown to the dog and handler) and they do the search together. It is definitely team work as one has to read the dog’sbody language. Dogs are then trialed and tested. May 31st 2014, Dash and I at tended our first t rial in Ottawa, Ontario, sponsoredby Best Friends Dog Training School. To achieve a Starters title, dog and handler must do a container search and an interior roomsearch as well as an exterior area, and pass all three to get their title. Under Judge Teresa Lewin, Dash passed all three compo-nents earning the title SD-S sp. SD indicates he has his Starters title, and the sp is added when the team successfully completesall three searches in one trial. Dash achieved a score of 95 out of 100, Top Amateur Started Team as well as the Best Friendsaward and HIGH IN TRIAL. October 11th at a trial hosed by Competit ive K9s, Dash passed all three components and achieved hisAdvanced SDDA SD-A SP, HIGH IN TRIAL with a score of 198 out of 200 under Judge John Mairs. October 12th at the second trialhosted by Competit ive K9s, Dash took Top Overall Working Team, Top Working Advanced Team and HIGH IN TRIAL.
‘’ I am so proud of my boy and wish to thank Kim Cooper for her excellent instruct ion. We now will be working on his ExcellentNose Work titles. Dash is also a superb Therapy Dog, visiting The Heartwood Nursing Home on a weeklybasis, bringing a smile to many of the residents’ faces. I want to thank Loraine and Phil of Eldee Shelt ies for this special boy.
I feel so lucky to have him in my life’’.Pat Carpenter
BY ParentAm.Ch. Macdega Notorious xCan Ch. Eldee Out Of The Blue
We congratulate Pat and Dash for this great achievement inthis new activity. Once again shelt ies prove to be versatile in anydog sport and Pat’s dedication and ability to read Dash’s innerpotential has paid off. — Eldee Shelties.

This will be my last submis-
sion as BC Director, with the
new one coming on board in
the New Year. I would like to take a moment
to wish the new Director best wishes on her
new gig!
Winter is fast upon us, and with it the dan-
gers of antifreeze, so please keep on the
watch for leaks or open containers. It’s sweet
taste does attract dog and cat alike. It is No-
vember 11th as I write this, and we have had
a lovely fall day, not a cloud in the sky. What
a great day for the dogs to have a run in the
sun, through a flurry of fallen orange and red
leaves. The wind is trying it’s best to blow
them all off the trees but there is still quite a
few clinging to the branches of the trees lin-
ing the streets around my neighborhood.
The roads and lawns are a cacophony of color
at this time of year, making it a bit of a chal-
lenge in raking as the dogs seem to be just
as determined to scatter them about again!
It’s a hoot watching them trying to find their
ball amongst the piles of leaves.
We certainly cannot complain about the
weather on the west coast this summer. The
summer shows were great to attend with the
warm and balmy weather. Although I person-
ally attended only the four days in Nanaimo,
and six days out of our August circuit, I thor-
oughly enjoyed camping on the grounds with
good company of friends and dogs. Finishing
a young sable male before placing him in his
forever home was a nice finish to the days of
the circuit that I attended, but what really
thrilled me was the success that my bi-blue
girl, Ch. Marpointe Smoke And Mirrors, aka
“Magic” had in the ring. In just 10 days of
showing, 4 in Nanaimo and 6 of the Island
circuit, Magic started and finished her cham-
pionship (Nanaimo) with a Breed win under
Mike McBeth, and then as a Special went on
to a Group 3rd and a Group 1st, as well as
several BOS, and Selects to garner 14 points
toward her Grand Championship! Blowing her
coat badly after Glacier View ( I was tempted
to
gl
ue it on for the last couple of days, as she
was starting to blow on the circuit), I then
could not show her again until Port Alberni in
mid-October where she got BB and Group 4!
What a girl! And this from a girl I thought
would never get enough coat to show. She
sure fooled me! Magic will be taking some
time this winter to whelp a litter, but hopeful-
ly her Grand Championship will be soon to
come. We are presently breeding her to Am
GCH Chelson Gotta Wear Shades and hope-
fully, if all goes well, we will have a lovely
litter of bi-blues and bi-blacks come early in
the New Year, and after they are weaned,
she will be going back to live in Revelstoke
with my good friend, Linda Walford, who
raised and trained her to show so beautifully
for me. News Flash!! Just got back fro Elsie
Murray and one day of Ladies Kennel Club –
Magic got BOS on the Friday of Elsie Murray
and Select at Ladies…giving her the needed 3
points to finish her Grand
Championhip…Whooohoooo! 16 Days of
shows, and she finished her championship
AND her grand championship. Now anticipa-
tion builds to see if she is pregnant and if she
is…what future show prospects she will have.
Life is good!
Several of our Island and lower mainland
people had a successful summer as well. It
was nice to hear from them.

I like to brag about my dog O.T.CH. Starmist
Misty Blue, U.D. RE. Misty was awarded the
2013 Highest Obedience Dog in the CSSA,
owned by a club member. I received a lovely
engraved plaque. At the B.C. Sheltie club
banquet she received the Obedience Chal-
lenge Trophy for 2013 as well this was the
second time she had won this trophy. Cur-
rently we are working on the UDX and Mas-
ters, Misty is co-owned by Diane Lang-Foster.
And on a much sadder note, we lost a long
time Sheltie person here in BC…Karen Stew-
ard of Rainsong Shelties. Her memorial is in
this newsletter. She will be sadly missed by
her close friends and family….but also sadly
missed by her Sheltie family here in BC.
That’s it from BC…it has been a pleasure to
serve as BC Director, but time and health
constraints has made it very hard to
continue….as they say “Life happens.” And so
it has with me and mine. Hats off to the next
BC Director and I wish her much success in
his/her new role.
See you at the shows!

Saskatchewan Shelties are
settling in for a long winter. It

white and the young dogs, who have never seen
snow think it’s Great! We look forward to the
Holiday season, and the New Year and the new

It was the last weekend of the year for shows in
Brandon Manitoba. I am thrilled to announce
that "Toffee", Cassbar's Carnival Toffee got her
first two points and her friend “Bindi”, Cassbar’s

We are very sad to announce that “Keira” Ch.
Skyehaven Shall we Dance CDX SJATD crossed
the Rainbow Bridge in November, 2014 at 8
years of age.
Keira had earned her CDX and was training for
Utility. She loved doing her Obedience exercises
and was always excited to go to training classes.
She also was a St John Ambulance Therapy Dog.
In this role Keira worked with groups of patients
[ages 18-85 years of age] in the psychiatric
ward at a local hospital. Here she demonstrated
what she could do in Obedience. Many of the
patients had the opportunity to work with her
[retrieving, signal exercises, going for walks etc]
Keira provided therapy when patients on the
ward gave her lots of hugs and everyone got to
pet her.
As part of St John Ambulance, Keira also visited
an Elementary School in the Inner City. The pro-
gram was “Special Paws for Special Kids”. Here
she worked with children ages 5 yrs-10 years of
age.
Keira was shown in Conformation as a senior
puppy and quickly earned her Championship.
She was a very special little sheltie and will be
greatly missed.

ARE YOU READY TO RALLY ?
I’m going to go out on a limb here and suppose that all of the conformation handlers out there have been very busy teaching their dog some,
if not all, of the Rally exercises. So, now, your dog knows what to do, but do you?
First a little background on Rally Obedience, commonly called Rally-O or Rally. Rally was developed by Bud Kramer, who also proposed the
concept of the very popular sport of Dog Agility. Rally has also been described as a cross between Obedience and Agility. Many of the exer-
cises are derived from exercises experienced handlers use when training for Obedience. Rally was introduced as a titling class by the AKC,
January 1, 2005. The CKC received permission from the AKC to “borrow” their rules. With some minor changes and those changes that
would reflect the difference in CKC Obedience rules, in January 2007 Rally Obedience became a titling event in CKC.
Some of the main features of Rally are:
· There are three levels of Rally – Novice, Advanced, and Excellent
· To qualify a dog and handler team must receive a minimum score of 70 points out of a possible perfect score of 100
· Three qualifying scores of 70 points or more must be earned under at least two different judges in each class to earn a title.
· All exercises in the Novice classes are to be done with the dog on leash.
· The handler is able to use unlimited verbal communication as well as signals and body language with their dog during the entire per-
formance.
· The handler guides the team through a series of sequentially numbered exercises, called stations, and the team performs the steps
required by the station.
· All dogs will be timed. Times will be used only in the event of a tie for a placement. Timing will begin when the Judge gives the or-
der “Forward” and will end when the dog and handler cross the finish line.
· Signs will be placed to the right of the handler’s path, except for those indicating a change of direction, in which case the sign will be
directly in front of the handler. Exercises using cones may require entry with the sign on the left.
· You should begin to perform these exercises about two feet before the signs.
· A ten minute walk-through for each two hours of judging will be allowed for handlers without their dogs.
· The handler must not physically guide the dog or make physical corrections.
· Loud or harsh commands and intimidating signals will be penalized.
· Scoring is not as rigorous as in traditional Obedience and deductions that would be scored as a ½ point in Obedience will be scored
as 1 point in Rally.
Most Rally judges would agree that most errors are made by the handlers, for the most part the dogs do fine ! I strongly recommend that
you practice these exercises and your footwork without your dog until you are sure of what you are doing.

AGILITY NEWS FROM ONTARIO
Eleanor Leasa – Ontario South
We have had a busy summer and fall, here at Canrosea. Our veteran shelties are still going strong at agility. Steeplechase titles are aboutto be completed with Bronze achievements for both Madie and Paris. CanroseaShonba Call Me Anytime, better known as Blondie, isalmost ready to start her agility career and we plan to have her in starters level courses when we ring in the new year. She thinks founda-tion training is not nearly as much fun as jumps and tunnels, but alas it is the fundamentals first.
Ruffleith's Renaissance, our Miss Nova, has been doing well in her conformation quest with numerous best of winners awards, and a verynice Best of Breed award. We hope for good results from the remaining fall and early winter shows in our area. I thank Kim Wendling forher advice and for handling Miss Nova to her successes thus far. Nova is now doing the same fundamental training for agility, and has onlyjust discovered that tunnels are a blast at top speed.
It looks like a busy winter of indoor training with our anticipation of an event filled spring to come. Plans are being made for a spring litterwith the focus on agility ability….the sire is not only handsome, but has an established agility competition record…stay tuned.
Congratulations! Don’t forget to share your agility news or brags in the next newsletter!
Thank you to all Suri's fans, exhibitors & judges across Canada
