    TheCarbonTanzaniateamhashadabusylastfewmonthsaswecontinuetodeveloptheREDDintheYaedaValleyproject

    withtheHadzabepopulationandourpartner,UjamaaCommunityResourceTeam(UCRT).Wewouldliketosharewithyou

    someofourrecentaccomplishmentsandplansforthefuture.

    ThecommitmentofafewvisionaryresponsibletourismoperatorsinNorthernTanzaniahasfacilitatedthedevelopmentof

    ourinnovativeanduniqueflagshipprojectintheheartlandoftheHadzahunter-gatherers.Aswemoveforwardwith,at

    oneendofthescale,projectactivitiesonthegroundandattheother,interfacingwiththeglobalcarbonmarkets,weare

    seeingthat theexamplethatwearecreatingis set toprovidea templateforgeneratingcarboncreditsthatbenefitall

    playersalongthevaluechain,fromtheprojectownersatthevillageleveltothebuyersatthecorporateendoftheline.

    Financially linking natural habitat protection to tourism activities has shown us that it is possible to create the right

    incentives for activities that ultimately benefit all involved, from the direct resource users to the companies whose

    businessesdependonthelong-termwisemanagementofTanzanias,andtheearths,naturalresources.

    CarbonTanzaniaemploysprojectCommunityCoordinator:PiliGoodo(picturedduringoneofourAboveGroundBiomasssurveys,whichbasicallymeansmeasuringtreesforhowmuchcarbontheycontain!),aresidentofDomanga

    Village,acceptedtheroleofCommunityCoordinatorinNovember2011.Pilihasdiligentlycoordinatedandtracked

    community-led monitoring of village land use practices, carbon content, and environmental and socioeconomic

    baselines.

    Hadzabe of Mongo wa Mono and Domanga granted title oftraditionallanduse:TheHadzabeintheprojectareastartedthe

    newyearwithnewlegalstatusandrecognitionoftheirtraditional

    righttothelandinthevillagesofMongowaMonoandDomanga.

    Project Design Document (PDD) and Technical Specificationssubmitted to the Plan Vivo Foundation: Having spent months

    working to formalizeour project activitiesand community-based

    monitoring practices and calculate the projects carbon benefit,

    CarbonTanzaniasubmittedthePDDandtechnicalspecificationsto

    Plan Vivo in February 2012 bringing us one big step closer to

    certification.Thesedocumentsareavailablefordownloadatour

    website.

    Carbon Tanzaniasigns contractswith the villagesofMongowaMono and Domanga: Our most recent trip to the Yaeda Valley

    earlier this month resulted in the signing of contracts with

    Hadzabe representatives and village councils. Celebration by

    villageresidentsandtheCarbonTanzaniaandUCRTteamsmarked

    theoccasion.

    PlanVivovalidationvisit: CarbonTanzaniawillwelcomevalidatorsforaprojectsitevisitinMayorJuneofthisyearand expects to be certified as a Plan Vivo project shortly thereafter. Based on the community-led carbon

    assessmentsintheprojectarea,combinedwithsatelliteimaging(remotesensing)workfacilitatedbyTheNature

    Conservancy,wewillhave15,240tCO2e tosell in the firstyear.Thisamount may vary astheprojectprogresses,

    basedonthesuccessofthecommunityinprotectingitstraditionallandusearea.

    TanzanianTouroperators: Ourexistingoffsettingpartners inTanzaniaalreadybenefitfrombeingabletopromotetheiremissionsreductionpaymentsasresultinginsocialandenvironmentalwinsforcommunities.Thissetsthem

    apart from other operators and allows them to fulfill the growing international travel industry demands for

    responsible tourism. Carbon Tanzania has partnered with Responsible Tourism Tanzania to help tour operators

    understandtheneedtoconsideroffsettingtheiremissionsandwearelookingforwardtopartneringwithevermore

    operatorsasthegoodnewsspreads.

    Internationalcarbonoffsetsales: CarbonTanzaniaisexpandingitsclientbasethroughpartnershipswiththe UnitedBank ofCarbon andBioCarbonPartners. Purchasers ofour carbon credits seek to reduce their greenhouse gas

    emissions where possible and offset their remaining unavoidable emissions through investment in socially andenvironmentallyresponsible carbon offset initiatives. These partnerships willenable Carbon Tanzania tomeet its

    targetofsellingallthoseprojectcreditsnotpurchasedbythelocalTanzanianmarketatthebestglobalmarketprice.
