The 2011-2012 season was a terrific year for Children’s Theatre

Company. the plays on our stages this season followed heroes of

all shapes, sizes, and species and included two world-premiere

productions. We were honored to open the season by bringing local

author Kate DiCamillo’s vivid and deeply comic character, Mercy

Watson to the stage in Victoria Stewart’s imaginative and thoroughly

delightful adaptation, Mercy Watson to the Rescue!. the season

also brought a new production of the powerful A Wrinkle in Time

under the guidance of acclaimed director Greg Banks. our new,

multi-year partnership with Seattle Children’s theatre allowed our

audiences to enjoy the magic of animated projections and inventive

music and staging in Harold and the Purple Crayon. A highlight for

all of us this year was the world premiere of Lizzie Bright and the

Buckminster Boy, a new play developed at CtC that sparked family

and community conversations about race, friendship, and the weight

of history. playwright Cheryl West, in her adaptation of the book by

Gary D. Schmidt, brought a moment of history to life with characters

both hilarious and heartbreaking in a powerful and evocative tale of

friendship, courage, and the power of faith. We also brought back

two extraordinary classics The Wizard of Oz and Pippi Longstocking

in productions that were both hugely successful. In fact, the bright,

bold rendering of the classic The Wizard of Oz, directed by peter

Rothstein was the highest grossing show in our history.

This was a season completed with strong attendance, terrific critical

and community response to our work, and continued commitment

to new work. In addition, as part of CtC’s ongoing commitment to

making stories on our stages accessible to all, this season also saw

the start of a new $10 ticket program which offers a limited number

of $10 tickets to every show. More than 3,000 people came to

shows at CtC in the second half of the season alone through this

unprecedented new offering and more than a third of our audience

this season came to CtC through one of our access programs. thank

you for your support and for making CtC the leading theatre for

multigenerational audiences in north America.

SCHool MAtIneeS At CtC

Children’s theatre Company is committed to ensuring that

professional theatre is available to young people from across

our region, regardless of their economic resources. live theatre

opens doors and opens hearts, and attending a live theatre

production benefits young people by fostering an appreciation

for the arts, supporting literacy, and offering a broad view

of the world. through theatre, young people practice

communication, teamwork, and problem solving—skills that are

critical to success in school and in life. CtC provides a critical

opportunity for students to reap these benefits.

each year tens of thousands of students attend plays on our

stages through CtC’s School Matinee program. In 2011-2012,

more than 67,000 students and teachers from 44 Minnesota

counties came to School Matinees at CtC. School groups

receive tickets at deeply discounted rates, as well as additional

financial assistance for schools with high proportions of low-

income students. Schools can also apply for transportation

subsidies to mitigate the cost of bringing students to a show,

an important consideration as public schools continue to

face budget cuts in the arts. to aid teachers in extending their

students’ experience beyond the trip to CtC, we also offer

study guides for each show in the season. the study guides

contain dynamic lesson plans designed to address Minnesota

Standards in english language Arts, literacy in History, and

Social Studies, as well as the Arts.

“the Student Matinee program at CtC is a rare and priceless

gem. Many students at my school will only attend a quality

live theater performance a few times in their life. those

times will mostly likely be when our teachers bring their class

to CTC. We don’t take other field trips so we can reserve

what little funding we have to provide this unique and

lasting gift for our students. With tight school finances, we

appreciate all your support in helping CtC keep ticket costs

for students as low as possible. to have the best children’s

theater in America in our backyard is an amazing education

and artistic treasure. thank you So MuCH to all donors who

help keep these opportunities available to all students.”

If I could have scripted my ideal way to begin my tenure at Children’s

theatre Company, I suspect it would have looked much like our 2011-

2012 season.

The 2011-2012 season was marked not only by a multitude of terrific

artistic successes, but also our highest grossing production in CtC

history, The Wizard of Oz, which earned an astonishing $1.6 million in

ticket sales. In economic times that continue to see real challenges

for many arts organizations, this kind of result makes us incredibly

proud and grateful to have such a dedicated and loyal audience

here in Minnesota. Community support – both in terms of ticket

sales and in terms of contributed revenue – is critical to our success

and our ability to continue to create work on our stages and in our

community.

Continuing the successes of the previous season, we were again

able to make headway in reducing our accumulated deficit from the

recession years and in stabilizing operations. As a result of strong

ticket sales and ongoing monitoring of expenses across the theater,

CTC finished our 2011-2012 fiscal year with a modest surplus. With

operations stabilized, we will be focusing on debt reduction under

the guidance of a special Debt Reduction task Force of the Board

of Governors over the next several years. the season was also

particularly notable in the passing of a new strategic plan for the

coming five years (2012-2017) that reconfirms our commitment to

excellence, to young people and their communities, and to rigorous

fiscal management.

the 2011-2012 season also marked the beginning of several new

income-generating initiatives by CtC, headlined by our commitment

to improving economic access with our new program of guaranteed

$10 tickets for every performance. this highly competitive entry level

ticket immediately started to generate new attendees with more

than 40% of these tickets being purchased by first time buyers.

This allowed us to make real progress in filling unused capacity and

increasing access to our productions.

to all of our donors and patrons, thank you.
