Financial Assistance 101Definitions of

Financial AssistanceThere are three basic types of financial assistance available to CTC students:

G r a n t s & S c h o l a r s h i p sBoth are “Gift Aid” money that you do not have to earn by working and it generally does not need to be repaid. The difference is that grants are primarily based on financial need, while a scholarship is usually based, at least in part, on merit.

T u i t i o n W a i v e r sThis is a special type of scholarship. It is different from grants and scholarships because it only pays tuition and not fees or any other student expense.

L o a n s This type of financial assistance must be repaid with interest by the student. The repayment is usually after the student leaves school or drops below half-time enrollment.

CTC Academic Tuition Waiver Program For fall and spring semesters, the Community & Technical College offers tuition waivers to support student program completion/graduation.

To be eligible for the CTC Academic TW Program, a student must meet the following requirements:

• Undergraduate students only• Officially admitted to UAA for at least three credits and formally admitted into a CTC degree or certificate program• An Alaska resident• Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 at the time of application• Be in current satisfactory academic standing per the UA system policy: http://www.uaa. alaska.edu/financialaid/policies.cfm#CP_ JUMP_308974

To apply, download copies of the CTC Tuition application form and the Tuition Waiver form and follow the application guidelines on the CTC website. All forms are available onlineat www.uaa.alaska.edu/ctc. Hard copies can be requested from the CTC Dean’s office by calling (907)786-6400.

“The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students (both undergraduate and graduate) in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid (including the Pell grants, and work-study program).” -Wikipedia

Complete FAFSA Online:1. Go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/2. Click on “PIN Site” at the top of the webpage. Then click on “Apply for a PIN” and complete the application process. Your PIN will be activated within three days. This PIN will act as your signature for the FAFSA documents.3. Once your PIN is activated, you can apply for your FAFSA loans. If you are under the age of 24, unmarried, and without children, you will need both your parent(s) tax return, as well as your own.4. Complete the FAFSA online. Do NOT send in the signature page as your PIN is your signature.

Complete a Direct Loan Master Promissory NoteA promissory note is a binding legal document you sign when you get a student loan.1. Click on “A to Z,” on the UAA website and then “Financial Aid.”2. Click on “Financial Aid Checklist.”3. Click on “Step 7.”Follow the online instructions to submit electronically.

Applying for Financial Assistance

Accept, Decline, or Partially Accept Financial AidAfter completion of your Application for Admission and the Financial Aid Application (FAFSA), your file will be reviewed by the UAA Office of Student Financial Assistance, and you could receive a financial aid offer. This offer will appear on your UA Online account (http://uaonline.alaska.edu/). If you have completed all of the preceeding steps, and the loan offer is not on your account, call the Financial Aid Office at (907) 786-1586 (option #2) to speak with a UAA Financial Aid counselor.

Alaska Advantage Student Loan

Students attending UAA (either Alaska residents or students from another state) may also apply for the State of Alaska (Advantage) student loan (www.uaa.alaska.edu/financialaid). Click on “Lender List” and then “Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education” and follow the links. The maximum amount that can be borrowed is $8,500 per academic year.

Complete Loan (Entrance) Counseling Online: www.uaa.alaska.edu/financialaid

Every student applying for financial aid at UAA must complete “Loan Counseling” at the initial application for financial aid. Entrance counseling is an information session which takes place before a loan is disbursed and is required for first-time borrowers. The session explains your responsibilities and rights as a student borrower.

UAA Fort Richardson Civilian Club ScholarshipThis scholarship fund offers financial assistance for tuition and other related educational expenses to full-time UAA students who are formally admitted into a certificate or degree-seeking program within CTC.

3.0 Full (12 cr.)

Any certificate or degree in CTC

UAA CTC ScholarshipThis scholarship provides financial assistance for tuition and other eductional expenses to full-time students currently enrolled in a certificate or degree program within CTC at UAA.

Must be pursuing a UAA CTC Certificate or degree directly related to the Tech Prep High School course taken by the student.

UAA Second Chance ScholarshipThis scholarship offers financial assistance for tuition and other related educational expenses to students majoring in Allied Health Sciences at UAA

2.0 Undergraduate degree in Allied Health program

Alaska resident

UAA NDTA Arne Michaelsen ScholarshipThe purpose of this scholarship fund is to offer financial assistance for tuition and other related educational expenses to a student who is attending at least half-time and who is formally admitted into a degree-seeking program at UAA that is transportation or logistics related. Recipients will recieve a one year membership to National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) and are encouraged to attend a minimum of three NDTA functions.

Transportation or logisitics-related program

- must submit 250-word essay describing qualifications for this award.- must be willing to accept this award in a public forum.

UAA Alaska Air Show Association Aviation ScholarshipThe purpose of this scholarship fund is to provide financial assistance for tuition and other related educational expenses to students enrolled in any one of UAA Aviation Technology Division AAS or BSAT degree programs.

x 2.5 Full (12 cr.)

Aviation Technology AAS or BSAT programs

U.S. Citizen, Alaska Resident, or out-of-state resident

- must have completed 15 credit hours of coursework at UAA

UAA Hal Horton & Floyd Saltz Aviation Memorial ScholarshipThe purpose of this scholarship fund is to offer financial assistance for tuition and other educational expenses to full-time students who are formally admitted to an Aviation degree program at UAA.

Aviation Technology program

- should demonstrate a strong interest in aviation industry.- preference given to 3.5 GPA- sophomore standing (30+ credits)

UAA Culinary Arts & Hospitality ScholarshipThis scholarship offers financial assistance for tuition and other related educational expenses to full-time students at the University of Alaska Anchorage majoring in Culinary Arts.

2.5 Full (12 cr.)

- must document 8+ hours of volunteerism in Culinary Arts & Hospitality program- in second semester with 9 credits

UAA HRA Apprenticeship and Training Scholarship FundThis scholarship offers financial assistance for tuition and other educational expenses to full-time students majoring in Culinary Arts & Hospitality at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

- must be a member of good standing in Local 878 and employed by the Anchorage Hilton, Hotel Captain Cook, or Westmark Hotel
