CHI 9-JAN-73 17:03 13749 Response to (Journa~. 13741,), TNLS-like address expressions in DNLS

~he plan is still to p ut TNLS - llke address expressions into DNLS. The problem Is that the current TNLS address expreAsion is not consistent with links (one would like to use an expression where a na~e or nu_ber or SIn or marker I s now used . TNLS now forces one to use a period before na.es or nu~bers or SID's. r have proposed a new e xpress ion syntax, which was not I.mediately accepted . I plan to push harder, soon. Charles.

HGL 9 -JA N-73 15:26 13751 Note on NLS Bug- reporti n g Mec hflnism Announced by Kirk (13732,)

rt was my i .. pression that in boots t -rapping, we .... e r e to make u se o~ the g ood things proposed and executed in the past rather than reinventlng everything 1 rom the beginnIng. While It is v aluable to have a bug r epo rtIn g " system " as descrIbed by Kirk In ( 13732,), it should be noted that such a dat a base has been In ex~stence slnce last summe r and was announced by Diane Kaye in ( l0869, ).

Wh il e it may be too much to expect that everyone knows abou1: 1:he previ o us system , It is probably not too much to expect the propGsal o~ any new system to those a~~ec1:ed by it (in thls case, NLS prog ramm e rs, the NLS bug coordina1:ors ( OSK and myse l~), and the Dperations manag er JCN} o~ Its lmplementa1:lon be~ore

rather 1:han a g eneral announcement care~ul consideration.

l'hls design p ractice is one that Js necessary in all systems whJch are of the NLS

they are as this.

part

We could have avoided the duplication o~ data bases and the prolite ration ot journal g roup idents.

Another cri1:1cism-- these tiles should not be In the NLS directory . R~ ther, the MSR directory, repository o~ the old baseline and , hope~ully, 01 the new baseline, is a1:i il appt"Dpria te.

More posit vely, though , the idea 01 having the Journal deal wIth the reports I s good , hut r see no reason to have a human intermediary receiVe the messages and transmit them to the 1 ite. Why not have two Ilident" ~iles io MSR whose Journal branches will receive mail 10r either BOGS or NP as appropriate. As actIon Is token on these Items, they could he moved Jnto the appropriate branches in the ~ile (I.e., beIng designed, implemented, tested, e1.c. )

DLS 12-JAN-73 10 : 58 13779 FORMS GEN 8 RA1' OR PACKAG E

BACKGROUND: t

Th e g overnment runs on torms.. ThIs may b e less true J n an R&:D envi ronment than some other places, however there is a forlll at RADC whJch one can use to order other ~or~s ..

There are o.f.flces which do nothing but desi g n forms .. what cri terip they use in desl g n lna themt however {t

I do not know is clear t hat

they do no1. t in most insta. nces , have computer output in mInd . 1 b

NL S Is desi g ned to handle ~ree text . Jt lR di£~lcult t l~ not impos s lhle to create an NL S statement which will be properly printed OLlt on a £orm which has been preprinted Lor typewriter use .. In a d dition , th e r e a r e a number of lIne ~eeds t file names, dates, etc. wh ich typIcally are p rinted ou t p r i or to printing the content 01 an NL S 1Jl e , which make re g istration of the form impossible . lc

There are' a number 01' :forms in use a.t RAnC whlcb have information which I s 01 tastin g value. The Information con~ent of these forms can noy be prepared , coordlnated , revIewed , and edited using NLS. When the f'inal Version 1.5 obtalned t however , they must be retyped by a sec.-etary on a oor .. al o.flice typewriter b efore they can be sent to till? ou~side world. (am unsure of the additional amount 0-1 "01"1< this creates . 1 have seen instances where a secretory spends as much as 4 hours on one toro that mus -t be lett",r perfect . Id

.w ore important than the manhnurs which would he saved, is the data bases ~hat would be "automatically" created , which would be use1ul to mana g ement and en g I n eers alike . This i s particullar~y true in the procurement area , where manag ers need to know the rate at wbich money Is bein g acquired, committed and ex p ended. ld1

DLS 12-JAN- 7 3 10:58 13779 FORMS GE NERATOR PACKAGE

Form crea~ion includes the initial fitLln g in at the blanks in the form (this may be done by several people who are not in the same of~ice), coordination or the form through the chain of command, editing aod otherwise chang in g the content of the form and indicatin g approval (now accompl.lshed by sl g niture) . Some forms may hBve ~o be recalLed at a later date (several months) and inf.ormation added to them . 20.2

Printin g o~ the form Jncludes ~he insertion o~ a preprinted ~orm Into the p rinter , re g jstration of the £orm accordin ~ to some predet e rmined rules, loadin g the approp r iate ~ile, issuin g the print command, the actual printing and removal o~ the form ~rom th~ printcr. 2 0. 3

DesJ g n Criteria: ~

As In all NL S susystems Bnd commands , the forms packag e should be as easy to us~ as possjblc. In many instances administrative people wiLL be the ones ~jllJng out the forms and printin g them out. 3 a

Any new comMands created should be integ rate d wJ th and conslstant with the existin g NLS commands; le, O[utput] D[evice] F[or ms Printer] and G[oto] F[orms] C[reationJ or some slmiliar terms . 3 b

E~istjng TEN E X and NLS commands and ~ile s tructure should be used wherever possible. 3c

PropGsed Imp lementation: 4

The 1'ollowin~ is a suggested implement(1.tjon based on my liMited knowledg e o~ NLS and related SUbsystems. 4a

File desi g n: 4b

That i~, by including some special fea~ures in the hardwa r e , such as horizontal and ver~icle tabbin g , ha lt spacing, and splIt pla t en , the s iz e o~ the so~tware package should be reduced , its cOl1lplexity decreased and i1:s run tim'" Jroproved. Walter Bass made a suggestion that the ~orms mi g ht be ~illed out in an Interactive Il'Iodl" j ie, thot the p repr-inted information associated with the first hox would be prInted out at the terminalt the user would ~ill In his data, the second box wo uld be automaticolly displayed, tbe user woulu fill out this, and so on to the end of the rorm . Along with this goes the i dea that error checks would be made i mmed iately ~or tile data in each box and the user noti.fled it h is input violated some 0-1' the rules i'or thot box ..

An ulternative would be to have the user ~ill out the entire form and only have the errors checked when it was printed out via the ODF (or slmiliar) command.

I have no particular p reLerence for one alternative or the othe r.. The f irst is somewhat " sex ier lt and has the advantage 0" immedi ate ~eedback to the user. The second has (I think) the advantage o'l simpler programmjng. r would ten d to favor the

Dirk Van Nouhuys was r ecently des i g nAted 0.8 my teacher and we planned to meet three times a week for onc hour .
