music from the Takács Quartet, as well as dozens of free performances featuring the up-and-coming students and talented faculty of the College of Music and the Department of Theater & Dance.

This spring, we’re also a proud supporter of the inaugural Boulder Arts Week celebration from March 28 to April 6. This citywide event represents the fi rst large-scale, inclusive celebration of our community’s vibrant arts and cultural offerings. Among the exciting offerings will be theater, dance and music performances, art walks, exhibitions, artist demonstrations and much more.

And of course, with its host of rich artistic and cultural offerings, CU-Boulder will be a big part of Boulder Arts Week. The campus will feature exhibits at the CU Art Museum, a jazz showcase from the College of Music, a comic update of Plautus’ classical Roman play, The Rope, and to top it all off, a sizzling concert by the Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra in Macky on Saturday, April 5.

Music byStephen Joshua Sondheim (born March 22, 1930) is an American composer and lyricist known for his immense contributions to musical theatre for over 50 years. He is the winner of an

Sondheim has written material for movies, including the 1981 Warren Beatty film Reds, for which he contributed the song “Goodbye For Now”. He also wrote five songs for the 1990 movie Dick Tracy, including “Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)” which won the Academy Award for Best Song.

He was president of the Dramatists Guild from 1973 to 1981. In celebration of his 80th birthday, the former Henry Miller’s Theatre was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on September 15, 2010, and the BBC Proms staged a concert in his honor. Cameron Mackintosh has described Sondheim as “possibly the greatest lyricist ever.”

From the Stage Director Leigh Holman

When I was in graduate school at Eastman, I had the opportunity to take a semester-long class in the music of Stephen Sondheim. It was then that I was turned on to the absolute depth, breadth and brilliance of his music and lyrics. For a long while, he had been the mysterious genius to me. Who was this person that created Follies, Company and collaborated with Broadway greats such as Leonard Bernstein and Jule Styne?

His personal and artistic life is much more accessible to Sondheim fanatics now, but in our modern age, the 84-year old-is possibly best known for Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Assassins and Saturday in the Park with George. In this production, we take the opportunity to reach back to the year 1976 and the previous years in Sondheim’s creative life.

Set in his New York apartment in the mid 1970’s, we’ve turned this retrospective of Sondheim’s early compositions and lyric writing into an additional opportunity for our student performers to learn more about the man and his friends. Each of Sondheim’s “friends” take on aspects of some of music history’s most important mid-20th century Broadway heavy-hitters.

You are also one of the guests at Stevie’s apartment, too, so make a Harvey Wallbanger, pull on your bellbottoms and join us for a night on the couch side by side by Sondheim.

In 1986, the London theater critic Michael Billington saluted Stephen Sondheim as “the greatest living American composer after Copland.” This extraordinary praise will be strongly supported by the diverse and beautiful music featured in Side By Side By Sondheim. Featuring work from roughly the first half of Sondheim’s career, Side By Side contains a mixture of well known favorites, more obscure pieces, and songs that didn’t make the final cut for Sondheim’s Broadway shows.

Sondheim’s musical influences are quite diverse and range from Rachmaninoff to Ravel. A lesser known, but estraordinarily important, influence on Sondheim’s development was his studies in New York with composer Milton Babbit. Although Babbit may have seemed to be an odd choice as a teacher for Sondheim, his teaching had a lasting influence on Sondheim’s control of musical form and the structural foundations of theater composition.

In this production, Sondheim’s compositional mastery will be on full display. From the frenetic energy of Another Hundred People to the beautiful simplicity of Anyone Can Whistle, Sondheim’s music will take us on a journey through the various aspects of the human experience. Leigh Holman (Director of Opera Studies) balances her teaching and professional stage directing career in the US and abroad. CU New Opera Workshop

CU NOW will present the world premiere of The Master, an opera by composer Alberto Caruso with a libretto by noted Irish author Colm Toibin from his acclaimed novel of the same name. Performances will be held on the CU Boulder campus in the ATLAS Black Box Theater on June 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. On June 14, audiences are invited to attend a live recording session of the entire work. The production will be directed by Ron Daniels (Royal Shakespeare Theater, American Repertory Theater) and will feature students from the CU College of Music. CU New Opera Workshop is a three-week event, held every summer, giving advanced student singers the opportunity to work with professional composers,playwrights and directors in creating new works for the musical stage.

CU NOW Composer Fellows Institute is an exciting, new initiative linking select CU student-composers with composer Alberto Caruso, the CU Composition faculty and the CU NOW musical and direction staff to create new vocal works for the stage. The Fellows’ scenes will be featured on the June 8 concert.
