WAAPA’s Dance programs are intensive, with students averaging 35-40 contact hours per week. Daily tuition from our professional teaching staff focuses on building technical excellence, while three performance seasons per year give students the opportunity to refine their skills by working with visiting national and international choreographers.

Repertoire includes works by: Nils Christe, Nacho Duato, Rafael Bonachela, Leigh Warren, Sasha Janes, Lauren Langlois, Claudia Alessi, Helder Seabra, Niv Marinberg, Richard Cilli, Scott Elstermann and Raewyn Hill. In 2020, we plan to continue our collaborative partnership and exchange with the Pina Bausch Foundation, Wuppertal.

Our international exchange program offers opportunities to study in Taiwan, Hong Kong or New York State and students also regularly participate in international tours to China, Taiwan, France, Germany and Holland to further enhance their skills and experience.

CUA50113 - DIPLOMA OF DANCE (ELITE PERFORMANCE)

Duration: 1 year, full-time

This nationally recognised qualification is the first year of the vocational dance program which leads into the Advanced Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance). It is a classical technique and performance focused course, providing intense technical and practical experience through classes and performance opportunities.

• Students develop technical and creative skills in discipline areas of ballet, pointe, pas de deux, repertoire, solos and performance.

• Additional studies include contemporary, choreography, dance history, music for dance, yoga, character dance, anatomy and nutrition.

CUA60113 - ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF DANCE (ELITE PERFORMANCE)

Duration: 1 year, full-time

This nationally-recognised qualification is the second year of the vocational dance program. It takes a holistic approach to the needs of the classical dancer of the future, building the skills required for lifelong sustainability in the dance profession. Technically challenging, the second year also encourages dancers’ confidence and creativity.

• Students develop advanced technical and creative skills in discipline areas of ballet, pointe, pas de deux, repertoire, solos and performance.

• Advanced Diploma students perform in two major performance seasons each year with a range of Australian and international choreographers.

• Additional studies include contemporary, choreography, dance history, performance psychology, music for dance and cultural dance forms.

• Upon completion of the Advanced Diploma of Dance, WAAPA offers dancers the opportunity to apply for a third year of classical training in the Bachelor of Arts Conversion (Dance).

• Primary physical studies include: contemporary dance, ballet, performance, repertoire, choreography and secondment with electives in yoga, tumbling, acting, aerial, cultural dance and somatic studies.

• BA students perform in two major performance seasons each year with a range of Australian and international choreographers.

• Additional studies include: dance history, dance criticism, arts administration, and music.

• This provides insight into dance as an art form and develops skills in communication, critical thinking and research.

• The course provides a range of international programs for semester-long exchange, study abroad, or performance. They can also apply for short-term industry placements within major Australian companies.

• The Bachelor of Arts (Dance) is a prerequisite for Honours, LINK Dance Company, Masters programs in performance research as well as for the Graduate Diploma of Education.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE

BACHELOR OF ARTS (DANCE)

Duration: 3 years, full-time

An intensive, challenging course where performance and classroom practice is central to the philosophy of the program. This course caters for students who wish to continue their contemporary or ballet studies at a professional level. It encourages students to pursue individual goals as dancers, choreographers, educators, researchers or administrators.

POSTGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES AND LINK DANCE COMPANY

LINK is a fourth year Honours program and a pre-professional dance company. Dancers who have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree can audition for LINK’s one-year intensive program. LINK’s purpose is to bridge the gap between university studies and professional practice. Its program has a strong focus on contemporary choreographic process, research and performance.

MASTER OF ARTS (PERFORMING ARTS)

This course is unique for its ‘work place’ learning model, immersing the individual in dance making practice alongside world class teaching staff and national and international visiting artists.
