Unit 8 Coldplay How many members are there in the band Coldplay? _______________________________________________________________ Coldplay is a very popular English guitar band. There are four members – Jon Buckland who plays the lead guitar, Will Champion who plays the drums, Guy Berryman who is the bass guitarist and Chris Martin who is the lead singer. They are from different parts of Britain but they all met when they were studying in London. Chris is probably more famous than the other three members in the band because his wife is the famous American actress Gwyneth Paltrow. They now have a baby girl called Apple! The group met at University College London in September 1996. They became good friends and all shared a real passion for music. At first, they didn’t want to be famous; they just wanted to play and write music and have a good time. They practised almost every night, wherever they could – in the bedroom, the bathroom, even in the park! They played some concerts in some small bars and pubs before they made their first album. Now that Coldplay are rich and famous, they do a lot of work for charity and play concerts to give money to people in other countries who need food and water. Their first album, ‘Parachutes’ was released in 1998 and it became very successful. Their famous songs are ‘Shiver’, ‘Yellow’, ‘For you’ etc. Many people compare them to the group Radiohead. Unit 5 Interpreting Dreams When do you think dream interpretation began? _______________________________________________________________ People began to interpret dreams in 3000-4000 B.C. In the past, people didn’t know the difference between dreams and reality. The Greeks and the Romans thought that people who interpreted dreams or had significant dreams were very special people. They thought that dreams were messages from the gods. In the early 19th century, people associated dreams with personal problems. Sigmund Freud revolutionized the study of dreams. Some interesting information: • During our life, we will spend six years dreaming! • Everybody dreams. Maybe you don’t remember your dream, but you always

dream something. • Dreams are necessary. People who do not dream don’t have sufficient

proteins. • Blind people dream. • The word dream means ‘joy and music’. • Men usually dream more about men. • Women dream about men and women. • Babies never dream about themselves. • Nightmares or bad dreams begin at about three years old. • We dream one or two hours every night. We often have four to seven

dreams in one night. • Five minutes after the dream we forget 50% of the content. After ten minutes

Unit 4 Life in Britain in 2020 How do you think cars will operate in 2020? _______________________________________________________________ Some people think that in a few years’ time, in about 2020, life in Britain will be very different. In general, there will be less pollution and less radiation because houses will use solar energy and cars will use hydrogen. There will also be less traffic because a lot of people will work from home or three or four people will use the same car at the same time. People in the future will recycle all the water used in a house, even the water from the toilet! People will have ‘intelligent’ fridges in their kitchens. These will automatically ask for bread, milk, yoghurts and eggs when there are none. The local shop will then deliver these products to the house in a big, secure box. People think that to buy food from another country will cost a lot of money. A lot of families will grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables and will have chickens for the eggs. Most houses will have computers with a television in every room and perhaps all houses will have home cinemas. Travelling by aeroplane will be expensive. More people will travel by train to different countries. Rich people will probably choose to spend their holidays in space! The climate will change a lot. In Britain it will be possible to grow melons in the garden because the weather will be very good! Read and answer the questions. 2. What energy will houses use in the future? _______________________________________________________________ 3. Why will there be less traffic in 2020? _______________________________________________________________ 4. How will people travel to different countries? _______________________________________________________________ 5. Where will the rich people spend their holidays? _______________________________________________________________ 6. What fruit will it be possible to grow in British gardens? _______________________________________________________________ How do you imagine life in 2020? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Unit 7 Tate Modern Where is the Tate Modern? _______________________________________________________________ The Tate Modern is London’s new gallery of twentieth century modern art. It opened in May 2000. It is on the south of the river Thames, opposite St. Paul’s Cathedral and next to The Globe Theatre. You can get to the building by boat, underground, bus, train, ferry, taxi, car, coach, bike and on foot! The building was an old power station designed by Sir Gilbert Scott. This man also designed the famous, red telephone boxes that you can see all over Britain! Two Swiss architects – Herzog and de Meuron designed the interior of this large red building. It has got a collection of modern art from 1900 to now. On the first floor there is a sculpture of a giant metal spider called ‘Maman’ by Bourgeois. There are two floors of permanent art. There are 30 rooms on each floor. There are paintings by Picasso, Dalí and Joan Miró. The third floor is for exhibitions and there are rooms for people to sit down and read. Millions of people visit the gallery. It is popular because you don’t pay to enter. This is the perfect place to visit for all the family. If you prefer classical paintings, don’t visit London’s Tate Gallery! Read and answer the questions. 1. What type of art can you see at the Tate Modern? _______________________________________________________________ 2. Who designed the interior of the building? _______________________________________________________________ 3. What can you see on the first floor? _______________________________________________________________ 4. Unit 9 Darth Vader Which science fiction film does Darth Vader appear in? _______________________________________________________________ My favourite science fiction villain is Darth Vader. He appears in the Star Wars films. Darth Vader is a movie villain, but he wasn’t always bad. He started as Anakin Skywalker, a good, young and clever man. He was trained by the Jedi Council to become a Jedi. His teacher was Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin Skywalker became tired, unhappy and angry with his teacher because he wanted more power. He was seduced by the dark side. This made him evil and gave him more power. He had a fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi and because he was already strong and had extra power from the dark side, he did well. But during the fight he had a very bad accident and he changed from Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of Sith. He became the enemy of the Jedi. Darth Vader is very tall; he wears black clothes and a black mask. He is really evil. His master is called the Emporer Palpatine and Darth Vader is his most loyal servant. Darth Vader and his knights are responsible for destroying the Jedi. They use a special weapon called a lightsaber to fight the Jedi. I like Darth Vader because he is very strong and intelligent. Read and answer the questions. 1. What type of clothes does Darth Vader wear? _______________________________________________________________ 2. Why is he an interesting character? _______________________________________________________________ 3. Who does Anakin Skywalker fight with? _______________________________________________________________ 4. What happens after the fight? _______________________________________________________________ 5. What is the name of the weapon used to fight the Jedi? _______________________________________________________________ Write about your favourite hero or villain. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Unit 10 Mobile Telephone Technology What is the American word for a mobile telephone? _______________________________________________________________ Today millions of people use mobile phones. The Americans call them cellular phones or cell phones. They are fantastic gadgets because you can talk to anyone anywhere on the planet. The mobile phone is a recent invention. The basic concept of cellular phones began in 1947. Dr Martin Cooper who worked for Motorola is the inventor of the first modern mobile. He used the mobile phone for the first time in April 1973. In the past, mobile phones were very big, like bricks! Now they are smaller and have more functions. With a modern mobile phone you can use the calculator, play games, use the dictionary, send and receive e-mails, use the Internet, receive information about the weather or sport, listen to music or the radio. You can even take photographs and send them instantly to your friends. There is now a mobile phone for blind people or for people who can’t see very well. A Spanish company called Owasys invented it in 2003. This telephone hasn’t got a screen; it speaks to you and tells you the name or the number of the person who is phoning you. When you press a button, the phone speaks to you too! Both adults and children have mobile phones. In 1997, 9.1 million British people had or used a mobile phone. In June 2003, there were 50.2 million! Read the questions and choose the correct answer. 2. The basic concept of the mobile phone began in a. 1997 b. 1973 c. 1947 3. The inventor worked for a. Unit 11 Britney Spears – An Agony Aunt? What is an Agony Aunt? _______________________________________________________________ An Agony Aunt is somebody who gives advice to young people who have got problems and write letters asking for a solution. Agony Aunts read these letters and respond to the young people’s problems, giving them advice. They usually work for newspapers, magazines and sometimes they even work on the Internet. Some Agony Aunts are famous people. One of these famous people who worked as an Agony Aunt is Gail Porter. Gail Porter is a British children’s television presenter and she became a temporary Agony Aunt on Internet for Valentine’s Day. Millions of young people wrote to her asking for advice and solutions to their problems with health, love and relationships. In September 2004, the famous, American pop star, Britney Spears, will become an Agony Aunt for BBC Online. The singer will give advice to fans on the So... teenagers’ website for two weeks. Britney Spears thinks that it is a fantastic way of demonstrating that pop stars are real people.
