WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN COMPOSING FOR INDIVIDUALS (WCCI) 2013-2015

The WFCC is inviting composers of all countries to participate in the 2013-15 WCCI. The tourney director is Dmitry Turevsky (email: dmitri.turevski@gmail.com). The competition will be held according to the system used in the previous championship, with changes in the points 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 14 of the rules.

Rules 1. The WCCI is organised with the authority of the WFCC. The champion-ship should be announced in advance. 2. The WCCI is open to all composers from all countries. 3. The WCCI includes the following sections: A) Twomovers, B) Threemov-ers, C) Moremovers, D) Endgame studies, E) Helpmates, F) Selfmates, G) Fairies, H) Retro problems. 4. A composer may submit to each section no more than 6 and no less than 4 compositions published in the defined three-year period. For informal tourneys the date of publication of the issue containing the composition is decisive; for formal tourneys the date of appearance of the award is decisive (NB: not the closing date of the tourney). Later corrections should normally be accepted. If the date of publi-cation is in doubt, the director should ask the composer for evidence. Joint compo-sitions are not allowed. It is not allowed to submit compositions on behalf of someone else without his written consent. 5. Entries must be sent to the director by email and in PDF format only. In each section composers have to submit one PDF file, which will include all their entries to this section with one composition per page. Composers must have al-ready marked their entries with No. 1 to 6. The compositions should be in diagrams of a uniform size, with the author’s name, email address, publication data, any award, stipulation, full solution and a comment if desired. Algebraic notation is to be used. In section D (endgame studies) composers may alternatively submit a PGN file of their entries. 6. The director forwards the PDF/PGN files (one PDF/PGN file per com-poser) to the judges, as well as a spreadsheet where they will enter their scores. 7. In each section five judges will be selected among the best 15 participants from the previous championship, with the restriction that in each section the judges should be from different countries. 2

If for any reason the list cannot be completed from these composers, the WCCI committee spokesman and the director will have to find other persons to act as judges. The same person can act as a judge in more than one section. It is desirable to avoid selecting the same judges as in the previous cycle, except when there is no other choice. The composers will have to agree in writing that they are willing to act as judges. 8. Using a scale of 0 to 4 including half-points, each judge will allocate points to all compositions in the section(s) which he has agreed to judge, except for his own entries. Compositions which are sound and not anticipated should receive at least 0.5 points. The judges must explain their reason(s) for giving a score of 0 points to any composition. Judges in section D (endgame studies) are requested to allocate points to the studies as if they had been composed in the traditional manner before the advent of the computer into compositional chess. It should also be noted that studies are not to be regarded as anticipated by any position appearing in a computer-generated database. 9. The judges should take note that entries to the WCCI with a score of 8 points or higher will automatically qualify for the 2013-15 FIDE Album. 10. After completing his work, each judge will send the spreadsheet with his scores to the director, along with comments regarding errors, very close anticipa-tions, thematic flaws, etc. The director should distribute these comments to the other judges together with his own notes on anticipations, cooks, duals, etc. How-ever, no comments regarding constructional weaknesses or possible technical im-provements are to be sent to the judges. Judges may wish to change some of their scores as a result of discussion with their colleagues, but their individual scores should always reflect the true value of the compositions in the view of each judge. 11. The director will calculate the total points gained by each composition. If a composition has been judged by five judges, the director discards the highest and the lowest marks and sums the remaining three. If a composition belongs to a judge, the director sums the two middle marks and adds the average of these two marks (in other words, the score of such a composition is 1.5 times the sum of the two middle marks). If a composition has received zero points from at least one judge, the director should inform the other judges about the reasons for such a de-cision. In such a case adjustment of points by all judges is necessary. 12. The director will send the tables with the results to the 3 members of the Supervising Panel, who cannot be participating or judging in any section. If he feels it necessary he will point out any potential irregularities, e.g. the average score of any one judge is much higher or much lower than that of the other four, or cases where there is a wide disparity (e.g. more than 1.5) between the judges’ points allocated to a given composition. The members of the Supervising Panel should also point out irregularities and ask the director for a resolution. 3

13. The sum of a composer’s 4 best compositions is calculated for his final result. The champion in each section is the composer with the highest sum of his 4 best compositions. In a case of a tie, the highest-ranked composition decides. If they are still the same, the second-ranked composition decides, etc. If all composi-tions have the same scores, composers share places. 14. In his report, the director includes a) tables with full results of all par-ticipants, b) the four highest-ranked compositions, with eventual comments, of the three winners in each section, c) the three compositions with the highest scores in each section, even if they do not belong to the three winners. The director decides about remarks concerning complete anticipation, legitimate publication data, legal-ity and soundness. The director and the Supervising Panel decide about any claims and the results are declared final when approved by the WFCC president and pub-lished on the WFCC site. 15. The official documents (announcement and award) should be written in at least one of the official languages of the FIDE. 16. The three winners in each section will be awarded a certificate of hon-our.

FIDE Olympic Tournament in composing 2016

Dedicated to the 42nd World Chess Olympiad 2016 (Baku, Azerbaijan)

The International Chess Federation (FIDE), within the framework of its “Chess Composition” special project, and the Chess Federation of Azerbaijan are organiz-ing a FIDE Olympic tournament in composing dedicated to the 42nd World Chess Olympiad 2016 (Baku, Azerbaijan, 17-30.09.2016). The tournament is coordinated with the WFCC Presidium and is a part of the joint efforts by FIDE and WFCC for the popularization and development of chess com-position worldwide. The tournament comprises six sections as follows: A. Twomovers, judge: Yakov Rossomakho (Russia) B. Threemovers, judge: Igor Agapov (Russia) C. Moremovers, judge: Oto Mihalčo (Slovakia) D. In each section composers may send only one composition. Joint compositions are not allowed. The theme is free in all sections and any number of moves is accept-able in the sections of helpmates and selfmates. The director of the tournament is Ilham Aliev (Azerbaijan). (-2.sa6, sa7#) is stopped by 1...qe5+! 1.ua6? (-2.sb7, sa7#) fails to 1... oc4+! 1.md5! (-2.mc7#) succeeds where de-fenses permit three separate promotions. 1...qc8 2. dcs#, 1...qe5 2. d8s#, and 1...o:d5 2. des#.

"Времена года" Зима. Новогодние праздники. На очередное занятие в шахматной секции тренер приходит в прекрасном настроении. Сразу же радостно сообщает мальчишкам и девчонкам, что сегодня они встретятся с гроссмейстером, ко-торый должен вот-вот прибыть. Сообщение прошло под всеобщий одобри-тельный гул! - Давайте быстренько наведём порядок в помещении, а я пока разгребу снег у входа! Сказано - сделано. Все с воодушевлением принялись за работу. Через некоторое время дверь потихоньку открывается, появляется спина тренера. Юные шахматисты с замиранием сердца вглядываются и ждут появления именитого гостя!.. Но что это?!! Их наставник резко оборачивает-ся, на лице - довольная улыбка, а на груди надпись - "Гроссмейстер". - С Но-вым годом, дети! Все смеются, порядок наведён, настроение отличное! Ока-зывается, что дочь преподнесла эту футболку отцу в подарок. Ну как не ис-пользовать сей реквизит в Новогоднем шахматном занятии?!! Весна. Следующий диалог произошёл в цветочном магазине между моло-денькой продавщицей и шахматным композитором, зашедшим сделать по-купку: - Мужчина, вам какие цветы? Пребывая в хорошем расположении духа, тот решил пошутить: - Такие кра-сивые, как я! - А таких красивых цветов, как вы, у нас нет! - быстро парирует девушка. - Тогда дайте таких шикарных, как вы! - А таких, как я, в нашем городе вы не найдёте ни в магазинах, ни на базарах! (Не правда ли, весенний суперблиц получился?!!) Лето. У моего соавтора супруга в отпуске уехала погостить к себе на Роди-ну, в Беларусь. В магазинах из съестного сейчас чего только нет, поэтому одному прожить можно, но покупное быстро надоедает, а домашнего так хо-чется... Вариант нашёлся простой: приглашаю на блины и, естественно, вы-даю их ещё и с собой! С разными начинками: с творогом, с яйцом, с фаршем и "без ничего". Созваниваемся на следующий день: - Ну как? Наверно, выби-раешь чего повкусней сначала съесть? - Как бы не так... Думаю, достаю с яй-цом, попадается с творогом, хочу с фаршем, натыкаюсь на творог. - О, да это же тема Флека! Ну, а без начинки как ешь? - Если без начинки, то приходится отрезать колбасы и припивать молоком. - Ого! А это уже глубокая засада! Ох, и неразбериха там у тебя в холодильни-ке. - Да я уже перестал искать и выщитывать. Всё вкусно и любой вариант для желудка актуален! В каждой фазе чередование не нарушают целостный за-мысел! - Ха! Своеобразная тема Туры в действии! (Поговорили, называется! Даже простое поедание блинов переводится на язык шахматной композиции!) 27

Осень. Сентябрь. Даже во время прогулки по магазинам не выходит из голо-вы очередной замысел в многоходовке: "В решении - цугцванг, в иллюзоре - угроза; выглядит не тематически..." Сделав покупки, степенно направляюсь домой. Заходя во дворик, замечаю, что впереди меня к подъезду "не строй-ным" шагом идёт соседка. Видно, отмечала чего-нибудь и если заметит меня, не избежать мне её рассказов со слезами, смехом и вопросов, не требующих ответов!.. Замедляюсь!.. Уфф, не заметили!!! Секунд 20 потоптавшись у входной железной двери, открываю и, как обычно, заношу руками впереди себя сетки со снедью, а своим мягким задним местом пытаюсь притормажи-вать лязг двери при закрытии. Соседей с первого этажа уважать надо. - Кому же нравится частый грохот при закрытии?! Сейчас вытру ботинки о полови-чок и направлюсь к лифту. Но, шьёрт побьери, забыл нынче, что у входной двери второй день сломан стабилизатор... Просунув впереди себя сеточки, я вдруг очень грубо получаю не хилый "бздык" сзади!.. Раньше Михаил Евдо-кимов в таких ситуациях от души говорил: "Больно же!.." До этого мой день был хоть и не выдающимся, но хотя бы размеренно-равномерным. Тут же, после тычка от железной двери, я не только не вытер ноги о коврик, но, про-летев поверх него, на ускорении пропорхал 8 ступенек до поворота к лифту, широко (как в молодости!) подпрыгивая через две ступеньки сразу! Проско-чил бы и дальше, наверно, до почтовых ящиков, но меня спасло то, что со-седка (вот хитрющая!) ждала меня за поворотом. Моя голова упала ей на пле-чо, сетки мои обняли по инерции всё её тело. И мы чуть ли не воткнулись в кнопку вызова лифта!.. Представляете? - Я до этого, беззаботно вполголоса рассуждающий сам с собой, типа "Цугцванг - угроза?!", врезаюсь в женщину. Она думает, что я ворчу, и начинает оправдываться. - Саша, Саша, да не то-ропился бы ты так! Я же видела тебя! Вот дожидаюсь! - Спасибо, Лена, ты - настоящий друг! - только и смог я промолвить... Придя домой, я долго ржал на кухне! И сзади больно, и бабу жалко, и замысел не додуман! Ах, как рас-слабляет это осеннее бабье лето!.. Вот и получается, что шахматы с нами в любой ситуации, в любое время го-да!
