purebred Simmental, and SimmAngus bulls. Additionally, we are pleased to partner with Glenmary Farm to offer 35 select

females which will sell immediately after the bulls. We are most appreciative of the efforts of Tom and Kim Nixon and family, Will

Reames, and all the staff at Glenmary Farm for their development of the bulls and commitment to BCIA.

The Culpeper Senior BCIA Sale has a strong tradition, this being our 55th year offering bulls through the program. This year’s

sale offering is consistent with the strong reputation of high quality genetics that has been established over the years. The BCIA

member breeders have done an excellent job assembling genetics which are designed to get the job done for you. We encourage

you to study closely the pedigrees and performance of this set of bulls which have been selected with your needs in mind. They

stem from proven and predictable genetics, coupled with outstanding individual performance and phenotype. Close examination

will reveal there are bulls to fit many needs, including calving ease bulls, growth and maternal bulls, and carcass bulls, along with

many that do all these well. As always, the bulls are backed by the BCIA guarantee which provides assurance on the soundness

and fertility, and a promise to you as the buyer from the breeders that they stand behind their product.

The Virginia BCIA contracts with Glenmary Farm at Rapidan, VA to develop bulls for its members with the following basic objectives: (a) To provide a standard, impartial postweaning gain test and development program that will furnish records which will be useful to the buyer and consignor in their breeding programs; (b) To provide a source of and market for performance tested bulls; (c) To provide quality genetics which address the demands of the industry, and (d) To serve as an educational tool for beef cattle improvement and promotion.

How the Bulls Have Been Handled93 fall-born Senior bulls (calved August 15 through November 30, 2011) were delivered to Glenmary Farm on June 26, 2012 and went on test July 10 following a 14 day warm-up period. The bulls completed the performance test November 1. At arrival bulls were vaccinated for clostridial diseases, IBR, PI3, BVD, BRSV, Pasturella, Haemophilus Somnus, and dewormed. They were fed a ration consisting of corn silage, corn, corn gluten feed, brewers grain, wheat midds, and a vitamin/mineral premix. The ration was formulated to contain 70% TDN and 13% crude protein on a dry-matter basis.

Sale RequirementsThe top two-thirds of the bulls within each breed test group sell based on the following criteria:Growth EPDs: All bulls selling meet minimum genetic requirements (YW EPD) for Virginia Quality Assured (VQA) Purple Tag Feeder Calf Program.Frame Score: Minimum frame score of 5.0 for all breeds.Reproductive Soundness: ALL BULLS HAVE PASSED A COMPLETE BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM as defined by the Society for Theriogenology, INCLUDING SEMEN EVALUATION, internal palpation, scrotal circumference measure, and penal inspection.Conformation: A committee evaluated all bulls for structural soundness and phenotype. Unsound or unsuitable bulls have been eliminated.Sale Eligibility and Order: Additional bulls were eliminated and sale order established using an index combining individual performance (adjusted YW and test ADG) and EPDs (CE, WW, YW, Milk).

Specifically, EPDs predict the difference in performance of the future offspring of a parent, compared to the future offspring from another parent in the same breed. carcass ePdsPresented in the catalog are carcass EPDs, derived from pedigree information and the bull’s own ultrasound record. These EPDs are expressed on an age-constant basis.Marbling (MB) - EPD predicts differences in USDA marbling score. Expressed in marbling score units.Ribeye Area (RE) - Predictor of bull’s genetic ability to transmit carcass ribeye area. EPD expressed in square inches. Fat Thickness (Fat) - Predicts differences in progeny external fat thickness, measured between the 12 and 13th ribs. multi-Trait Index ePds Angus Weaned Calf Value ($W) - Index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. Includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.Angus Beef Value ($B) - Represents the expected average dollar-per-head difference in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Combines estimates of genetic merit for growth and carcass merit, which are adjusted for differences in costs of production and expected premiums/discounts associated with grid marketing of progeny.Gelbvieh Carcass Value (CV) - The Carcass Merit EPD predicts differences in the dollar value associated with marketing progeny on a value-based carcass grid. MANAGEMENT OF THE YOuNG BEEF BuLLScott P. Greiner Extension Animal Scientist - Virginia Tech

Management Prior to the Breeding SeasonYour newly purchased yearling bull has recently completed a gain test,

which provided a high plane of nutrition. Since the completion of the test, the energy level of the diet was reduced and intake limited to prevent excessive fat deposition. The bulls have been managed to be body condition score 6 on sale day. This will give the bull adequate reserves of energy for use during the breeding season. Yearling bulls can be expected to lose 100 pounds or more during the course of the breeding season.

Acquiring a new yearling bull at least 60 to 90 prior to the breeding season is critical from several aspects. First, this leaves ample time for the new bull to get adjusted to the feed and environment of his new home, as well as an opportunity for several new bulls to be commingled for a period of time prior to turnout. Secondly, adequate exercise, in combination with a proper nutritional program, is essential to “harden” these bulls up prior to the breeding season. A facility for the newly acquired bull that allows for ample exercise will help create bulls that are physically fit for the breeding season. The nutrition of the bull will be dependent on body condition. Yearling bulls are still growing and developing, and should be targeted to gain 2.0 to 2.5 pounds per day from a year of age through the breeding season. Bulls weighing approximately 1200 pounds will consume 25 to 30 pounds of dry matter per day. This intake may consist of high quality pasture plus 12 lbs corn, grass legume hay plus 12 lbs corn, or 80 lbs corn silage plus 2 lbs protein supplement. Provide adequate clean water, and a complete mineral free-choice.

Prior to the breeding season, all bulls should receive breeding soundness exams (BSE) to assure fertility. Bulls in this sale all passed a BSE. All bulls that are to be used should have a BSE annually. Because a variety of factors may affect bull fertility, it may be advisable to re-test these young bulls before the breeding season even if it has only been a few months since the pre-sale BSE.

Management During the Breeding Season The breeding season should be kept to a maximum of 60 days for young

bulls. This will prevent over-use of the bull, severe weight loss and reduced libido. Severe weight loss may impair future growth and development of the young bull, and reduce his lifetime usefulness. When practical, supplementing young bulls with grain during the breeding season will reduce excessive weight loss.

In single-sire situations, young bulls can normally be expected to breed a number of females approximately equal to their age in months. Using this rule of thumb, a newly purchased bull that is 18 months of age could be placed with 18 cows or heifers. Bulls used together in multiple-sire breeding pastures should be of similar age and size. Young bulls cannot compete with older bulls in the same breeding pasture. A common practice is to rotate bulls among different breeding pastures every 21 to 28 days. This practice decreases the breeding pressure on a single bull. Some producers use older bulls early in the breeding season, and then replace them with young bulls. The appropriate bull to female ratio will vary from one operation to the next based on bull age, condition, fertility, and libido, as well as size of the breeding pasture, available forage supply, length of the breeding season and number of bulls with a group of cows.

All bulls should be observed closely to monitor their breeding behavior and libido to ensure they are servicing and settling cows. Additionally, observe the cowherd to monitor their estrous cycles. Many females coming back into heat may be the result of an infertile or subfertile bull. All bulls should be monitored for injury or lameness that may compromise their breeding capability.

Management After the Breeding SeasonYoung bulls require a relatively high plane of nutrition following the breeding

season to replenish body condition and meet demands for continued growth. Yearling bulls should be maintained in a separate lot from mature bulls, so these additional nutritional requirements can be provided. Body condition and projected mature size of the bull will determine his nutrient requirements during the 9 months following the breeding season. Bulls should be kept away from cows in an isolated facility or pasture after the breeding season. In the winter months, provide cover from extreme weather that may cause frostbite to the scrotum resulting in decreased fertility.

Gelbvieh influenced females attracted many of the most pro-gressive commercial producers in the industry with the first Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) germplasm study data in the early 1970s. Gelbvieh-sired females topped the charts on fertility, age at puberty and pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. Commercial Female SaleFemales sell immediately following bulls

Glenmary Farm is excited to offer commercial bred heifers, yearling heifers, and cow-calf pairs. As the 2012 Virginia Commerical Producer of the Year, Glenmary Farms prescribes to the performance and genetic principles of BCIA. All heifers are certified as Virginia Premium Assured Heifers.

Females will be grouped and sold in lots of 1-3 head. Details on individual lots and sale order will be avail-able sale day.

Virginia Premium Assured Requirements:• EPD requirements for service sire (calving ease,

growth) • Minimum pelvic area • Guaranteed pregnant and bred within restricted time

period• Screened for frame size, muscling, structure, body

condition, and other defects• PI BVD negative• Comprehensive vaccination program• Requirements verified by a third party

Bred Heifer Guarantee - All bred heifers guaranteed pregnant on sale day. If a heifer sold as pregnant is proven open by a veterinarian within 30 days of the sale, the consignor will replace the heifer or refund the sale price of the heifer and take possession of the heifer. Yearling heifers sold as short bred, ready for clean-up bull and cannot be guaranteed pregnant.

Females sell following bulls

Except for those stated in the below terms and conditions, there are no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold at this auction. The warranties and guarantees set forth in the “Terms and Conditions” are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied, and the remedies provided therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any party claiming through buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided, and all other obligations or liabilities.

BIddING: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. The person in charge will settle any disputes as to bids and his decision on such matters shall be final.

TERMS: Terms of the sale are cash, unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been established prior to the sale. All settlements are to be made with the clerks of the sales immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale premises.

PuRCHASER’S RISkS: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to purchaser until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.

REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES: A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the purchaser for each animal within 45 days following date of sale or receipt of full payment.

HEALTH: All animals are eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal requiring T.B. and Bangs tests in accordance with Federal Regulation.

ANNOuNCEMENTS: Any changes from information of any kind in this sale book will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence.

BuLL GuARANTEE: All bulls sold are guaranteed, via written contract between BCIA and the seller, to be breeders. Guarantee will be applicable to bulls which prove to be infertile, have structural soundness problems (including foot soundness), or have other issues which apply under a good-

faith guarantee. Any bull that settles a reasonable number of healthy cows shall be considered a breeder. This guarantee is contingent upon the buyer providing proper management prior to, during, and after the breeding season. Proper management shall include appropriate nutrition, breeding management (bull to female ratio appropriate for bull’s age, not commingling yearling bulls with mature bulls in same breeding pastures, proper observation of bulls during breeding season, etc.), and animal health care.

CLAIMS FOR REFuNd OR AdJuSTMENT: All claims for refund or adjustment in the event the bull is a non-breeder due to infertility or unsoundness must be made in writing by end of first breeding season but not later than 12 months following the sale. It shall be the responsibility of the buyer to prove the animal is a non-breeder. A veterinarian’s report on the causation of the bull being a non-breeder is required. If the bull proves to be a non-breeder, the seller shall be entitled to provide the buyer one of the following: a) full refund for the purchase price, b) replace the bull with another of equal value, or c) issue credit to the buyer redeemable at a future BCIA bull sale. The seller shall be entitled to any salvage value.

RIGHTS ANd OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitutes a separate transaction.

All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. Neither Virginia BCIA, the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, the Bull Test Station or its management, nor any other person connected with the management of the sale, assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.
