Since 1989, International Colloquia on Roman Provincial Art have been held every two years, each time in a different city and a different country1, with the aim of visiting another former province of the Roman Empire and discussing issues related to Roman art and especially to stone sculpture: correlation between contentandshape,transmissionofmodels,identificationofregionalmanufacturingcentres,criteriaforiden-tifyingdepictionsanddefiningchronologyandsoon2. In 2013, between the 27th of May and the 3rd of June, Romaniawas, forthefirsttime, hostofthisscientificmeeting, aftertheInternationalCommitteeacceptedtheproposal presented at Pula (Croatia) in 2011.

With each meeting, the number of countries participating increases. At the 13th International Colloquium on Roman Provincial Art, we were very pleased to have had over hundred participants from nine-teen countries, including the USA and Canada, responding to our invitation. We regret, however, the absence ofparticipants fromHungaryandBulgaria. Inordertokeepthecolloquiumcharacterof themeeting, thepapersessionswereroundedoutbyasessionofposterpresentations, dedicatedtonewfindsandprojects.

Up to now, all the colloquia had a proceedings volume, published within the two years’ time between the meetings. These volumes have built up, together with the Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani Series, a bib-liographical reference for the most prestigious international universities and research centres3. We are there-foregratefultotheRomanianAcademyformakingpossiblethefinancialsupportofthispublicationforthe13th edition of the colloquium, held in Romania.

The established structure of our meetings includes visits to museum collections and archaeological sites, fieldtrips, exhibitionopeningsandpromotionofscientificpublications, allrelatedtothemaintopicoftheRomanProvincialArtandtheworkoftheCorpus Signorum Imperii Romani Series.

The main topic of the Colloquium in Romania was Cult and votive monuments in the Roman provinces: Sculpture techniques, sources of stone material, craftsmanship and decoration – Iconography and symbolism.

InordertoachievethoseobjectivestheorganisersmanagedtooffertotwentyparticipantsfromPortugal,Croatia,Romania and Poland scholarships for attending the colloquium.

Following the established structure, this edition of the Colloquium on Roman Provincial Art brought intofocusthericharchaeologicalheritageandscientificworkofthearchaeologicalmuseumsandresearchcentresinBucharest,Sibiu,AlbaIulia,DevaandConstanțaandtheirbranchesandancientsites.Thefortuitouslocation of Romania, whose territory comprises the Dacian provinces of the Roman Empire and the northern part of the province of Moesia inferior, made of interest quite long trips in order to visit sites and museums withintheterritorynorthoftheDanube, inthehistoricalregionsknownasTransylvaniaandDobroudja.

For the good organization of the sessions and excursions during the colloquium we are most obliged to the Romanian Academy and to the team of the Archaeological Institute “Vasile Pârvan” Bucharest. The co-organisers–MuzeulNaționaldeIstorieșiArheologieConstanțaandMuzeulNaționalalUniriiAlbaIulia–madepossiblethesessionsandvisits inAlbaIulia,Constanţa,HistriaandAdamclisi.TheLibraryof theRomanian Academy and the “1 Decembrie 1918” University Alba Iulia generously hosted the papers session in Bucharest and Alba Iulia in their lecture theatres.

The excursion to see monuments of Moesia inferior had, as expected, its high point in the triumphal monument from Adamclisi / Tropaeum Traiani and the museum holding the reliefs and sculptures of the monument, with whose study research on Roman provincial Art began more than 100 years ago5.

Expected long term results of this colloquium are an impetus to the development of studies on Roman Art in Romania and the neighbouring countries in the Lower Danube region, and further, the improvement of acceptance and understanding of archaeological heritage and Roman Art monuments in the local and re-gional social context.
