    10Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a large pre-Columbianarchaeological site built by the Maya civilizationlocated in the northern center of the YucatnPeninsula, in the Yucatn state, present-day

    Mexico.

Chichen Itza was a major focal point in thenorthern Maya lowlands from the Late Classicthrough the Terminal Classic and into the earlyportion of the Early Postclassic period. The siteexhibits a multitude of architectural styles, fromwhat is called Mexicanized and reminiscent ofstyles seen in central Mexico to the Puuc stylefound among the Puuc Maya of the northernlowlands. The presence of central Mexican styleswas once thought to have been representative of

direct migration or even conquest from centralMexico, but most contemporary interpretationsview the presence of these non-Maya stylesmore as the result of cultural diffusion.

    9Statue of zeus of olympia

In ancient times the Greeks held one of their mostimportant festivals, The Olympic Games, in honor of theKing of their gods, Zeus. Like our modern Olympics, athletestraveled from distant lands, including Asia Minor, Syria,Egypt and Sicily, to compete in the games. The Olympicswere first started in 776 B.C. and held at a shrine to Zeuslocated on the western coast of Greece in a region calledPeloponnesus. The games, held every four years, helped to

unify the Greek city-states. Sacred truce was declared duringthe games and wars were stopped. Safe passage was given toall traveling to the site, called Olympia, for the season of thegames.

The site consisted of a stadium (for the games) and a sacredgrove, orAltis, where temples were located. The shrine toZeus was simple in the early years, but as time went by andthe games increased in importance, it became obvious that anew, larger temple, one worthy of the King of the gods, wasneeded. Between 470 and 460 B.C., construction on a newtemple was started. The designer was Libon of Elis and hismasterpiece, The Temple of Zeus, was completed in 456 B.C.

According to accounts, the statue was located at the westernend of the temple. It was 22 feet wide and some 40 feet tall. The figure of Zeus was seated on an elaborate throne. Hishead nearly grazed the roof. The historian Strabo wrote,"...although the temple itself is very large, the sculptor iscriticized for not having appreciated the correct proportions. He has depicted Zeus seated, but with the head almost

touching the ceiling, so that we have the impression that ifZeus moved to stand up he would unroof the temple..."

    8Collosus of Rhodes

This awe-inspiring statue was a gift from France

to America and is easily recognized by peoplearound the world. What many visitors to this shrineto freedom don't know is that the statue, the"Modern Colossus," is the echo of another statue, the original colossus that stood over two thousandyears ago at the entrance to another busy harbor onthe Island of Rhodes. Like the Statue of Liberty, this colossus was also built as a celebration offreedom. This amazing statue, standing the sameheight from toe to head as the modern colossus,

was one of the Seven Wonders of the AncientWorld.

The island of Rhodes was an important economiccenter in the ancient world. It is located off thesouthwestern tip of Asia Minor where the AegeanSea meets the Mediterranean. The capitol city, alsonamed Rhodes, was built in 408 B.C. and wasdesigned to take advantage of the island's bestnatural harbor on the northern coast.

In the seventh century A.D. the Arabs conqueredRhodes and broke the remains of the Colossus upinto smaller pieces and sold it as scrap metal.Legend says it took 900 camels to carry away thestatue. A sad end for what must have been amajestic work of art.

Travelers to New York City harbor see amarvelous sight. Standing on a small island in theharbor is an immense statue of a robed woman, holding a book and lifting a torch to the sky. Thestatue measures almost one-hundred and twentyfeet from foot to crown. It is sometimes referredto as the "Modern Colossus," but more oftencalled the Statue of Liberty.

    Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa(Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply the Tower of Pisa (La Torre diPisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of thecathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situatedbehind the Cathedral and is the third oldest structure in Pisa's Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo)after the Cathedral and the Baptistry.

The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the low side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft)on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42 ft) and at the top 2.48 m (8.14 ft).Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). The tower has 296 or 294 steps; theseventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase. Prior to restoration work performedbetween 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees, but the tower now leans at about3.99 degrees.[4] This means that the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 metres (12 ft 10 in)from where it would be if the structure were perfectly vertical.

    The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in thestate of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first nationalparks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of theGrand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of overa mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet).[1] Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have beenexposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rockwhile the Colorado Plateau was uplifted.[2] While the specific geologic processes and timing thatformed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate by geologists,[3] recent evidence suggests theColorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago.[4][5] Since thattime, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to the point we see it at today.[6]

Before European immigration, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlementswithin the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" inHopi language) a holy site and made pilgrimages to it.[7] The first European known to have viewed theGrand Canyon was Garca Lpez de Crdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.[8]

It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Itis widely considered as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and stands as a symbol ofeternal love.

Taj Mahal is the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian,Islamic and Indian architectural styles.

In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the white domed marblemausoleum is the most familiar component of the Taj Mahal, it is actually an integrated complex ofstructures. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, employing thousands

of artisans and craftsmen.[5] The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architectsunder imperial supervision, including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad AhmadLahauri.[6][7] Lahauri[8] is generally considered to be the principal designer.[9]

    4The great Barier Leaf

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system[1][2] composed of over 2,900 individualreefs[3] and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) over an area of approximately344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi).[4][5] The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast ofQueensland in north-east Australia. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made byliving organisms.[6] This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known

as coral polyps.[7] This reef supports a wide diversity of life, and was selected as a World Heritage Sitein 1981.[1][2] CNN labeled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world.[8] The QueenslandNational Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.[9]A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit theimpact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and itsecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic populationoutbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish. The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres StraitIslander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a verypopular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is animportant economic activity for the region, generating AU$ 1 billion per year.[10]

    3Pyramid

A pyramid is a structure where the outer surfaces are triangular and converge at a point. The base of apyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape, meaning that a pyramid has at least threetriangular surfaces (at least four faces including the base). The square pyramid, with square base andfour triangular outer surfaces, is a common version.

A pyramid's design, with the majority of the weight closer to the ground,[2] and with the pyramidion ontop means that less material higher up on the pyramid will be pushing down from above: thisdistribution of weight allowed early civilizations to create stable monumental structures.

For thousands of years, the largest structures on earth were pyramids: first the Red Pyramid in theDashur Necropolis and then the Great Pyramid of Khufu, both of Egypt, the latter the only one of theSeven Wonders of the Ancient World still remaining. Khufus Pyramid is built entirely of limestone, and is considered an architectural masterpiece. It contains around 1,300,000 blocks ranging in weightfrom 2.5 tons to 15 tons and is built on a square base with sides measuring about 230m (755ft),covering 13 acres! Its four sides face the four cardinal points precisely and it has an angle of 52

degrees. The original height of the Pyramid was 146.5m (488ft), but today it is only 137m (455ft) high, the 9m (33ft) that is missing is due to the theft of the fine quality limestone covering, or casing stones,by the Ottoman Turks in the 15 Century A.D, to build houses and Mosques in Cairo. It is still the tallestpyramid. The largest pyramid in the world ever built, by volume, is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, inthe Mexican state of Puebla. This pyramid is still being excavated.

    2AURORA

Auroras, also known as northern and southern (polar) lights or aurorae (singular: aurora), are naturallight displays in the sky, particularly in the polar regions, and usually observed at night. They typicallyoccur in the ionosphere. They are also referred to as polar auroras. This is a misnomer however, because they are commonly visible between 65 to 72 degrees north and south latitudes, which placethem in a ring just within the Arctic and Antarctic circles. Aurorae do occur deeper inside the polarregions, but these are infrequent and often invisible to the naked eye.

In northern latitudes, the effect is known as the aurora borealis, named after the Roman goddess ofdawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas, byPierre Gassendi in 1621.[1] Theaurora borealis is also called the northern polar lights, as it is only visible in the sky from the Northern

Hemisphere, with the chance of visibility increasing with proximity to the North Magnetic Pole.(The North Magnetic Pole is currently in the arctic islands of northern Canada.) Auroras seen near themagnetic pole may be high overhead, but from farther away, they illuminate the northern horizon as agreenish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the Sun were rising from an unusual direction. The auroraborealis most often occurs near the equinoxes. The northern lights have had a number of namesthroughout history. The Cree call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits." In Europe, in the MiddleAges, the auroras were commonly believed a sign from God (see Wilfried Schrder, Das Phnomen desPolarlichts, Darmstadt 1984).

Its southern counterpart, the aurora australis or the southern polar lights, has similar properties, but isonly visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America, or Australasia. Australis is

the Latin word for "of the South."

    HOT PICKS FOR VACATION

Hainin Island - It is interesting to note that while theisland of Hainan in southwest China is the country'snumber two holiday ravel destination (in betweenJiuzhaigou National Park in Sichuan and Yunnan's

Lijiang), most foreign tourists and expats living in thePeople's Republic have never even heard of HainanDao, let alone been there I used to be one of the guiltyparties. Despite residing in China for an extended periodof time, it was not until I began my epic travels acrossthe country that I was introduced to what is in fact itssmallest yet most exotic province.

Hainan's most popular season is, of course, SpringFestival, when legions of mainlanders shuddering fromsub-zero winter temperatures spend Chinese New Yearon the invitingly temperate beaches of the tropica island.

Conversely, sweltering summers turn Hainan into averitable Hades (reclusive sun worshipers take note:you will literally have the beach to yourselves). It is notsurprising, then, that Hang Dynasty exiles were oncebanished to 'The Edge of the Earth' as fatalpunishmentHainan island has made significant progressover the centuries, from remote settlement to populartourist attraction by way of repeatedly falling in and outof control of neighboring provinces until at last beinggranted provincial status in 1988 (disputably along withsome 200 surrounding South China Sea islands) anddeclared a Special Economic Zone to spur investment.
