Required Textbook, Cultural Anthropology by Barbara Miller, seventh special edition,
this book is formatted for this class-please purchase this textbook at the SCC
bookstore. This book should come with ANTHRO LAB-please bring your book to
class.
This publication has on-line pre-tests and other support for students. Please start
reading this book during the first week of class.
All instructions for this class are on-line please-go to SCC web-page and anthropology
department-link to documents for this important information. You will also find test
help at this SCC site.
In order to do well in this class please do the following:
Read the textbook-we will discuss about one chapter per week
Take notes on lectures and films
Your participation in class discussions is essential
You may take the textbooks pre-tests on line this will help you prepare for
your tests in the classroom
For a spring/fall class read 1.5 chapters per week in the textbook
For every 1 hour you spend in class it is recommended that you spend 2-3
hours doing homework-READING
It is school policy that if you miss 10% of the class the instructor can drop you
Absolutely no makeup exams unless you have a death in the family or
hospitalization with proof-late essay papers will not be accepted
You will have 4 tests during the semester-please bring a number 2 pencil and
a clean/undamaged Scan-Tron 882
Class conduct:
Cell phones, computers and other electronics are not allowed-they must
be off and put away prior to your entry into the classroom-thank you
We will all show respect for one another, periodically you will be asked to
move to a different seat-please do so quickly—any academic misconduct
such as plagiarism will not be tolerated, please see your Class Catalogue for
information on this matter
If you need to leave the class early please let your teacher know at the start of
the class period and--please no food in class.
Test Information:
You will have 4 test during the semester
Each test will have 70 multiple choice questions-the last two tests will also have
a take home open book essay-the final will include your SLO test
These 2 essays will be typed in APA style=American Psychological Association
style-if you need help--style books are available at the SCC Tutors Office, the
SCC Library and on-line
Essays should include anthropological terms, dates and names of
anthropologists. Your textbook is the only source of information in answering
the essay questions. Your essay should be a minimum of 5 pages but not
over 9 pages double spaced and this does not include the cover, abstract
and bibliographic pages.
Yes, footnotes will be needed-this sample will be fine-(Miller, p 237)
Test #1---70 points-multiple choice (mc), no essay (chapters 1-4)
Test #2---70 points mc, no essay (chapters 5-8)
Test #3---110 points, mc and essay (chapters 9-12)
Test #4---110 points, mc and essay (chapters 13-15) plus the SLO test-please
bring 2 scan-trons for the final exam.
360 total points for tests
Additional points will be given for the following:

Class project/chapters 14/15------20 points—Required
40 total points
Grand Total 400 points
You may work for a total of 40 extra points:

On final day you will be tested on your knowledge of these student SLO’s:
1. Discuss the contributions of anthropologists such as Margaret Mead, Jane
Goodall, Donald Johanson and Julian Steward toward the development of
anthropological field research.
2. Illustrate how Applied Anthropology can solve problems in forensics, language
renewal, and social/environmental impact studies.
3. Determine the importance of Anthropological Ethics when conducting
participant observation studies in human populations.
4. Critically analyze the positive and negative aspects of globalization on
traditional cultures around the world and determine if ethnocentrism is
involved in this modernization process.

Students with disabilities who want to request academic accommodations are
