The Bengali Association of Tokyo is celebrating its 25th year anniversary of Durga Puja festival this year. We take this opportunity to convey our best wishes to the readers of Anjali. Any Silver Jubillee is a time to rejoice and be rightfully proud for attaining the landmark of stability. Durgapuja is now considered to be one of the important annual Indian festivals held in Japan. Today, the day long festival is attended by few hundred people comprising of Indians from different parts of India, Japanese and other foreigners living in Japan.

Time flies, yet twenty five years is a long time indeed. During this period, many Bengali families came to Japan mostly in connection with their work. They generally came here on foreign assignment either from government or from the private sector. After living here for a short while most of them returned back to their usual place of residence. As a matter of fact, many of them did not stay here for more than few years. During their short stay, those Indians out of their sheer enthusiasm and dedication could lay the foundation of a very strong Indian culture which has culminated to the events today.

Twenty five years ago, Indians living in Japan generally had a slightly different lifestyle, as well as, a different mindset, too. Not many people were keen to live in Japan for a long time. Thus in the early days of Durgapuja, the main drive was to fulfill the cultural want of a small group of individuals. There was neither a need nor the capacity to bring about a more organized effort. Thus everything was done at a much smaller scale. Despite becoming larger in scope now, we have been able to retain the homely atmosphere with which it started. Along with the success and growth of this festival, our responsibility has also increased manifold in ensuring the accurate presentation of the cultural heritage of India in Japan.

We are indeed very happy and proud for taking part in launching this festival and bringing it to its current state. At the same time, we also wish that this event goes on to attain much higher quality, and eventually plays an important role in bridging India and Japan. Your cooperation will boost our confidence and guide us in the right direction towards achieving this goal.

We thank our well wishers who contributed to this volume and made it a success.

To Anjali’s readers, we convey our best regards.

As we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of our Durgapuja festival this year, it was quite obvious for us to use this as a theme for Anjali. A recollection of twenty five years could have been nostalgic to many families who lived here in different timelines. Unfortunately, such a compilation requires involvement of many people currently living in different geographies. Due to lack of bandwidth, we had to restrict our scope within few articles on this topic.

Anjali’s continuing success is made possible by the overwhelming support of many well wishers. The Embassy of India in Tokyo extends their gracious support for which we are very thankful. We hope to receive the same patronage in the future as well. We would like to thank all advertisers who have sponsored this year’s publication. We are thankful to Amitava Ghosh, Biswanath Paul, Byomkesh Panda, Neelanjan Bhattacharjee, Sanjib Chanda & Syamal Kar who, on behalf of BATJ, collected advertisements from our sponsors.

Anjali continues its multi-lingual nature through articles written in four different languages by contributors from Japan and all over the world. We sincerely thank each of the contributors for their effort. Every year we are noticing an increased interest among readers and contributors. We are thankful to all of them.

We thank Mrs. Bhaswati Ghosh and Mr. Viswa Ghosh who helped us in proof reading. We also thank PrintPac for their support in printing Anjali.

At different stages of this process, we received valuable advices from many people. We tried to incorporate their suggestions as much as possible, and hereby convey our sincere thanks to all of them. Editorial Team
