The Mexican Cultural Center and the Consulate General of Mexico in Denver have the honor to partner once again with Denver Art Museum and Museo de las Americas to bring to Denver the exhibit, GUNTHER GERZSO: A Mexican Master as part of the 2015 Biennial of the Americas. The Denver Art Museum highlights some of the artist's extraordinary paintings from 1960−1981 About the Exhibit: Drawing inspiration from art history as well as from the Mexican landscape, and using old-master techniques, Gunther Gerzso transformed the materials of the painter—“a piece of cloth and a little earth combined with enamel and oil”— into powerful expressions of emotion. The Biennial of the Americas 2015
The Mexican Cultural Center, in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico and the Biennial of
the Americas, bring some of the best contemporary artists to Colorado. This initiative is focused on the
issues of global thinking, art, culture and the diversity of the Americas. The theme of this year’s Biennial
was Now! with the purpose of “dive deep into our present circumstances, seeking to understand the
contexts, conditions, and challenges that exist across the western hemisphere today; from this position
of knowledge we will develop a platform for action toward a better-informed future”. The Biennial had
the presence of Ms. Lizeth Galvan Cortes, Director General Culture and Education Affairs, Mexico’s
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who mentioned the importance of the cultural relations in all the Americas
and the importance of continue cooperating to keep Mexico’s culture and artists all over the world.
Mexico was represented at the Biennial of the Americas with renowned artists, art exhibits and
performances. Some of the exhibits and artist that participated are:

This artistic project was developed with the “Museo Comunitario del Valle de Xico”, located in “Valle de Chalco Solidaridad”, an area south east of Mexico City, rich with archaeological and historical features, but facing acute social, political and economic challenges. “The projects presented in the exhibition were developed in collaboration with the museum and the artist collective attached to it. They aimed at examining the history and present conditions of the local area and the status of the museum within it.” Featuring artist: Claudia Fernández, Francisco Fernández Orozco, Fernando Palma, Nuria Montiel, Jorge Satorre, Onésimo Ventura Martínez, Ariana Natali Aguilar, Genaro Amaro, Juan José Ayala, Luis Fernando Galindo, Abraham Gallegos, Mariana Huerta, Leonardo León, Steephany León, Evelin Martínez, Juan Manuel Rodríguez, Daniel Rosas, Luis Ángel Verde, Neil verdugo Mazariego.

NOW? NOW is the central exhibition of the 2015 Biennial of the Americas, creating a surprising, dynamic experience, capturing the atmosphere of life in the Western Hemisphere today. The artists featured in the exhibition reflect the complexity of current time, such as the pervasive technologies, emergent forms of creativity and social and political engagement, ever-changing conceptions of identity, and interdependent, shifting economies. Some important questions will be raised through this exhibit regarding the relationships between North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. Some artist like Ryan Trecartin (US), Hitashya.org (Kari Altmann) (US), and Zach Blas (US) will reflect on how technology changes the way we interact. In particular this exhibit will feature Mexican artist such as Diego Berruecos, Debora Delmar, Aliza Nisenbaum, Fernando Ortega, Tania Perez, Córdova, Joaquín Segura, Eduardo Terrazas. I am the future is a major new artwork at the Jeppesen Terminal at Denver International Airport created by Mexico City-based artist Erick Meyenberg. Erick Meyenberg (1980, Mexico City) is a multi-media artist whose work looks into natural and social sciences, to uncover underlying layers of meanings incommon preconceptions. Meyenberg collaborated with members of a high school drill team from the nearby neighborhoods of Montbello and Green Valley Ranch to create a live performance, a film and sculpture installation that examins the fascinating past and present of the area surrounding the airport. Implant by artist Marcela Armas (born in Durango, lives and works in San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City) is a public installation in downtown Denver and Mexico City. The artist will create a “live visual, historical and material dialogue between the two cities that will unfold over the course of the 2015 Biennial of the Americas. The project will make visible and tangible the complex and fascinating relationships between both cities’ geologies and their histories.”

Dia de los Muertos at the Denver Botanic Gardens
The Mexican Cultural Center, in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Denver and Denver Botanic Gardens partnered once again for the fourth year to celebrate Dia de los Muertos at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The celebration included family friendly activities, such as sugar skulls decorating, face painting, an altar showcase, Traditional Aztec Dance Demonstration by Grupo Folklorico and a Traditional Chinelos Demonstration. There were different crafts and food vendors and people were encouraged to go dressed with a Dia de los muertos costume. The Mexican Cultural Center curated the “Journey through the altar” exhibition, where people went through the Denver Botanic Gardens to explore the meanings behind the elements of the altars and learned how each altar honors ancestors. People explored and discovered the different colors, textures, smells and sound characteristic of Dia de los Muertos. The 7 different stages of the exhibition included the papel picado which represented the element of air, arch of marigolds which acted as the welcoming door for loved ones to return to their homes and families, skulls as a reminder that in life, death is ever-present, candles which provided the element of fire, banquet with fresh fruits and vegetables which represented the element of earth, butterflies which represented the souls of the deceased returning to visit and the seven levels which referred to the seven levels of heaven and/or the Seven Deadly Sins of Catholic belief. The community created an altar tree where they wrote the memories or messages to decease loved ones in a small paper butterflies. Also, there were the Community Ofrendas, where members of the community created unique ofrendas for their loved ones to be remembered, with the classic elements of the altars but incorporating other personal objects. “Celebrating Life” Dia de los muertos exhibit –Mexican Cultural Center
The Mexican Cultural Center, in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico and Done Vida Colorado, presented the annual Dia de Muertos exhibit “Celebrating Life” from October 26th, 2015 and concluded on November 13th, 2015.
The exhibit consisted of several traditional altars which included the four basic elements that reflected the Mexican tradition such as papel picado, monarch butterflies, sugar skulls, catrinas, cempasúchil and more. The “Celebrating Life” exhibit also displayed two special shrines assembled by volunteers of Done Vida Colorado. One of the “altares” was dedicated to a Hispanic young man who passed away and gave the gift of life to others through tissue and eye donation. The second altar was dedicated to the people who after passing away provided a second opportunity of life or the enhancing of it, by being organ, tissue and eyes donors.
On November 1st, 2015 there was a media viewing at 12:00 pm at the Mexican Cultural Center Gallery. During the media viewing the visitors enjoyed the altars as well as some coffee and pan de muerto.
Throughout the duration of the exhibit, there were visitors from various schools, such as College of America, BLR Academy, group homes, families and more, whom received tours by the staff in either Spanish or English.
