The waiting room. Spanish exile in the United Kingdom

Spanish exiles arrived in the UK in the first part of the XX century. Trapped between two wars their presence was a period of transition that for some became permanent. This project serves to introduce a dialogue about the intellectual contribution of those who came to this country and to present their story as part of the very history of the UK.

Would it be possible today to rethink the notion of exile beyond its typical association of being a forced condition? Could that formulation give place to the creation of a new outcome, a global citizen able to transit among borders and cultures? The Waiting Room through two months of music, cinema, book, documentary, talks and art intends to explore these vital questions around exile, memory and identity, highlighted by a city as extraordinary as London.

Sherry is the most cosmopolitan and internationally known of Spanish wines, widely appreciated for the way it combines perfectly with dishes from the most diverse of gastronomic cultures. Many leading lights from the culinary world have fallen under its spell and, spearheaded by the lists of cutting edge Spanish restaurants, Sherry is now finding champions on the broader UK dining scene. For most drinkers and wine vendors alike the tangy, salty-dry styles of Fino and Manzanilla provide the most obvious and popular entry point. As both an appetite whetting aperitif and incredibly versatile foil to a range of robust food flavours these aromatic dry Sherries are hard to beat. Beyond Fino and Manzanilla, the richer, nuttier Amontillados, Palo Cortados, Olorosos and Creams – not to mention treacly Pedro Ximénez – are being given some serious attention by more adventurous restaurateurs and wine merchants. These wines can be sublime drunk on their own, but also work as highly flexible food wines. From intensely-flavoured starters to cheeses by way of meat and game courses, the opportunities for being inventive are as diverse as they are exciting. We hope you enjoy our selection of seven classic styles, guided by Beltrán’s insights into Sherry’s quality and versatility.

A young boy has fled his home. Crouched in his hiding place he hears the shouts of the men hunting him. When the search party has passed, what lies before him is an infinite, arid plain, one he must cross in order to escape those from whom he’s fleeing. One night he crosses paths with an old goatherd and from that moment nothing will ever be the same for either of them.

Out in the Open tells the story of a boy in a drought-stricken country ruled by violence. A closed world where names and dates don’t matter, where morals have drained away with the water. In this landscape the boy, not yet a lost cause, has the chance to learn the painful basics of judgement, or to live out forever the violence with which he grew up.

Jesús Carrasco was born in Badajoz in 1972 and currently lives in Seville. Since 1996 he has worked as an advertising copy writer. His first novel, Out in the Open, was declared Book of the Year by booksellers in Madrid. The Dutch translation was shortlisted for the European Literature Prize 2014. Out in the Open will be published in nineteen countries around the world.

Canning House and Instituto Cervantes are co-presenting this series of talks that looks at military dictatorships in 20th Century Latin America and their legacies to present day. Each talk will focus on a different country.

2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Brazil, a coup that established a 21-year dictatorship. The Brazilian dictatorship of 1964-85 was influential in South America, becoming consolidated relatively early in the cycle of authoritarianism in the region, and assisting and cooperating with other military regimes in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The 50th anniversary of the coup saw the publication of a number of books on the dictatorship, as well as the release of the report of the National Truth Commission. This work portrayed the legacies of the dictatorship in very different ways. This presentation compares and contrasts the views of the dictatorship expressed in these works and in popular culture, pointing to the implications of the various views for today’s Brazil. It covers issues such as the role of the United States in the coup and dictatorship, the statist legacy of the authoritarian regime, and the link between the dictatorship and contemporary police violence. With Anthony W. Pereira – Professor and Director of the Brazil Institute at King’s College London. He obtained his B.A. from Sussex University in 1982 and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in 1986 and 1991 respectively. He has held positions at the New School, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Tulane University, the University of East Anglia and (as a visitor) the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. His most recent book is Ditadura e Repressão (Paz e Terra, 2010).

Under the generic heading “Foro Cervantes” (Cervantes Forum), the University of Oxford and the Instituto Cervantes began a collaboration to present to British academia some of the Spanish writers best known to critics and to the reading public. This year`s session will feature Javier Cercas, who will give a lecture and meet undergraduates studying Spanish.Javier Cercas, novelist and essayist, is one of Europe’s most dis-tinguished contemporary writers. His works, which have been translated into more than twenty languages, include the acclaimed, Solados de Salamina (Soldiers of Salamis, 2001), which was made into a film by David Trueba in 2003, La Velocidad de la Luz (The Speed of Light, 2005), Anatomia de un Instante (The Anatomy of a Moment, 2009) and Las Leyes de la Frontera (Outlaws, 2012).He has won numerous literary awards, including the Independent’s Foreign Fiction Prize, and Spain’s National Narrative award. He is currently a Professor of Spanish Literature at the University ofGirona, and a columnist for El Pais. His work, which is highly politically engaged, troubles the borders of history and fiction, as it explores the Spanish civil war, or the legacies of fascism. In this sequence of lectures, Javier Cercas will reflect on the nature of the novel as a genre, including discussions of The Anatomy of a Moment, as well as works by Vargas Llosa, Cervantes, Melville, James and Kafka. The final lecture will address the question of whether it makes sense to talk about intellectuals nowadays.

Documentary Director Daniel Suberviola and Manuel Chaves Nogales’ grandson Antony Jones, will have a conversation about the fascinating figure of the Spanish journalist who came lived and died in England.

As a well travelled journalist, Manuel Chaves Nogales witnessed the dramatic transformation of Europe that resulted in the II World War. His strong democratic convictions and the way he identified from the very beginning the rise of totalitarian regimes as enemies of liberty make his work unmissable.

Written by Spanish playwright José Ramón Fernández.

Old friends, old places and old memories can be bittersweet when revisited, as Nina discovers when she returns to the small seaside town she grew up in. During a night in a quiet hotel she reminisces about the past with an old friend, Blas. Fuelled by drink, memories turn to love-making, and the sad realisation that life does not always work out the way we hope it will.
