Page 5: Culture and Values

Values Beliefs of a person or social group, a set of emotional rules that people follow to help make the right decisions in life, to decide what is right and wrong, and how to act in various situations.

Page 6: Culture and Values

Explicit Values: It is clear, not making anything difficult to understand and not hiding anything. So the value is stated and there is no need to look for clues to prove it.

Page 7: Culture and Values

Implicit Values:

It is not expressed directly but understood by the people involved. You’ll have to think about what you read and to look for clues to understand the values.

As a child we learn the values of our cultural background. They make it relatively easy to know what is the right thing to do and what is wrong. But it might have nothing to do with the values of another cultural background. So there can already be a huge difference. What is a crime in one culture, might be day to day practice in another.

Culture

“ A complex collection of knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, customs and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society”

(Prof. Edward Taylor)

Culture “The collective expression of the thoughts, speeches and deeds of the learned, talented or creative members of a society or a nation”

(Sri Rajgopalacharya)

A modern definition of culture is given by anthropologist William A. Havilland "Culture is a set of rules or standards that, when acted upon by the members of a society, produce behavior that falls within a range of variance the members consider proper and acceptable."

In other words, culture does not refer to the behavior that is observed but to values and beliefs which generate behavior.

Page 12: Culture and Values

Characteristics of CultureWilliam Havilland explains in Cultural Anthropology that there are four basic characteristics of culture:1- Culture is shared by a group of people (that constitutes a society).2- culture is learned rather than biologically inherited from parents.3- culture is based on symbols such as an image, an object of worship, etc.4- and culture is an integration of economic, political and social aspects.

-Our history, civilization, ethics, philosophy, religion, literature, science, art, etc.. are its components and reflections.

So we must know our culture and its origin and depth in the light of the mentioned aspects. We should also search new truths through experiments for the progressive expansion of our culture as per the need and call of the present.

Establishing and living with noble values of our great culture is our sacred duty and also a definite source of our advancement on the path of individual and cultural progress towards spiritual unfoldment.

Notes- After looking at English for Palestine Curriculum Stage1 ( Grade1- 4) we notice that its main focus in presenting values and culture depends on pictures rather than texts which are limited through mini dialogues.

- On the other hand, Stage 2 ( Grade 5-9) the curriculum is in-between texts and pictures when presenting values and culture.

- While high school levels, English curriculum focus on showing values through the contexts and long essays more than pictures.
