NOW IN ITS FOURTH YEAR, the CounterCurrent festival — produced by UH’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts to tell current-event stories through performance and installation art — draws inspiration from a particularly interesting political and social climate. The 10 multimedia productions occupy various non-traditional spaces during the festival, which runs April 18-23. One video piece, for example, follows three Syrian refugees as viewers watch from refugee-style bunk beds. And progressive artist Kevin Beasley, who uses movement and sound to explore the ebb and flow of black culture, debuts his latest site-specific installation in a pitch-black Eldorado Ballroom.
