Culturing Bacteria

Lab PreparationIn this lab you will be designing an experiment to

test the effectiveness of a product that contains an antibacterial chemical.

QuestionWhat are you going to test in this experiment?

Make an INFORMED prediction. To be INFORMED you need background info:

- Ingredients in each product-Claims made by the manufacturer

Must be written in IF…THEN… format

IF (Manipulated variable)THEN (Responding variable)

Manipulated, Responding, Controlled variables

Experimental control group vs test group

Preparing Petri dish

Divide the BOTTOM of the dish into 3 or 4 sections depending on the number of products you are testing.

Write your initials and class period on the SIDE of the LID.

Swabbing a sampleUse the sterile swab and slide it across the

sample area 2-3 times.

If you are testing:Hand sanitizer: swab your fingers/handsMouthwash: swab the inside of your cheeksDisinfectant: swab a surface that you would use

the disinfectant on

Create the LAWNGently rub the swab across the surface of your

agar

Storing your Petri dishTape your lid down

Place in incubator

Zone of Inhibition

Zone of inhibitionThe size of the ZONE determines the

effectiveness of the antibiotic.
