PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Well here we are, approaching the midpoint of the term already! I’m sure you too are amazed with which the term is passing and the amount of action that has been taking place around our school and community.

NAPLAN online testing was a significant event around the country and after some initial teething issues that impacted a range of sites Australia wide it was relatively successful at Cummins Area School. We have completed feedback for ACARA and know that this will assist with the planning of the process moving forward. As with everything, there were benefits and disadvantages with the online process. Results will be available in August/September, keeping in mind that this is a one-off snapshot of your child and used in conjunction with a range of other assessments to create a picture of their overall learning.

Students have been participating in a number of different sporting activities in the past fortnight. Our Yr. 11 students were fortunate to experience the hospitality of the Cummins Golf club and were able to use the picturesque scenery as a backdrop to perfecting their technique. Secondary students participated in Touch Football Australian Rules Football, Netball and Volleyball carnivals and represented us well, ensuring our school values were at the centre of all that they did.

A number of Primary students represented Lower Eyre Peninsula in the SAPSASA State Athletic Championships in Adelaide. Once again we were proud of the commitment and persistence shown by our students with some excellent results, both individually and as part of relay teams. Fantastic work.

Last Tuesday our new STEM facilities were officially opened by the honourable Peter Treloar, Member for Flinders. Peter spoke fondly of his time as a student at Cummins Area School and shared his memories of being one of the students who marched acknowledged the aesthetic and functional changes to the site as a result of the funding.

On Wednesday our Yr. 11 Drama students regaled the younger classes with their rendition of Alpacas with Maracas as part of National Simultaneous Story Time. It is a fabulous story and thanks to the library staff and Mrs Scheffler’s class for creating a highly engaging performance.

Our Yr. 11 and 12 students participated in a presentation by the Defence Forces on career opportunities and I know that this was well received, with many fantastic questions being asked and answered.

Teaching staff ventured to Lock on Thursday for a writing workshop with

Anne Bayetto from Flinders University. It was thought provoking and assisted teachers with planning rich learning experiences for our students around writing improvement. Research is quite clear that the difference between student grades is more often than not around writing calibre rather than levels of content knowledge. We know that within a community like Cummins that there are people who we rely upon for grants and letter writing due to their writing prowess and this is an important skill to develop in our students. We look forward to engaging with the community more around writing in the near future. If you know someone who loves to write in any format, let us know – we need our students to see how writing is a lifelong skill.

Lisa Richardson and our two Yr. 12 Agriculture students, Jed and Tess headed to Sydney on the weekend to participate in the Australian Merino Challenge. They were accompanied by Jayden Harris, a former student and local Stud Owner. Jayden has worked with the students and Lisa in the lead up to the event, and we hope he continues his partnership with us. A huge thank you to the Cummins District Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank for their ongoing support in attending this great opportuni ty. They have long supported us in this trip. We also received grants from PIRSA and Flinders Ports. Jed and Tess were kitted out in our Stock uniforms as supplied by EP Livestock and Agriculture and Rural Bank. Both of our students performed admirably and were fantastic representatives for our site. In a very competitive, National field, Jed was equal winner of the Wool category and a highly impressive third overall. Great work and thanks to Lisa and Jayden for giving up their time to support Jed and Tess.

Yr. 7 – 12 families will be receiving Traffic Light indicators for their students this week. Please take the time to reflect on these with your children. Any red lights are a cause for concern and will need to be addressed.

Please make a time to contact your child’s teacher if you seek further clarification. The next set of indicators will be issued in Week 8 so there is plenty of time to build on results.

GOVERNING COUNCIL

The governing council met in week 3 of this term. We would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Leanne Vigar in the school finances. She received a phone call from the auditors post-audit in recognition of her outstanding results.

In the last week of last term the Youth Week event was held at the school. As usual it was well run and attended by community members. Well done to Julie Crettenden and the YAC as organisers and the volunteers who helped both on the Yiros stall and all others.

There has been a Child Care working party formed to look at options for our town to provide childcare. Please contact the school to provide feedback to this group.

There will be a playground working bee at some stage soon, hopefully on a Friday afternoon so watch this space for an invite to help out for a couple of hours please.

If you’re keen to jump on Governing Council please talk to any member or give me a call 0429922955.

OPEN BOYS AND GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL

On Thursday, 16th of May, year 10 and 11 boys and girls travelled to Port Lincoln to compete in the Open Boys and Girls Touch Football Carnival. All teams played 4 round robin games against teams from Port Lincoln High School, Navigator College and St. Josephs College. Despite fielding very young teams, the Cummins Area School students represented the school with great attitude and effort throughout the day.

The Cummins 1 g i r l s t eam had limited success on the score board throughout the day b u t h a d s o m e brilliant plays by individual girls at times. The team h a d l o s s e s t o Navigators (2-6), Cummins 2 (1-8) and St. Josephs ( 0 - 1 2 ) b u t managed to get a good 1-1 draw against PLHS in the final game of the day. The team was led very well by Matilda Arbon, with some great plays leading to touchdowns for Jamison Boxer and Tara Phelps.

The Cummins 2 g i r l s t e a m managed to finish third overall in the girls competition due to great wins against Navigators (2-1) and Cummins 1 (8-1) but weren’t strong enough in games against St. Josephs (0-7) and PLHS (1-3). Julie G e r b e r d e m o n s t r a t e d excellent leadership in the team and played well throughout the day. The team had many individual touchdown scorers with Lara Howard-Ham scoring multiple from the wing position.

The Cummins boys team were unfortunately undermanned during the carnival due to late withdrawals from the team resulting in a lot of hard work for the remaining players. The boys started the day very well and were competitive in all of their games, but unfortunately were unable to win a game. They demonstrated excellent resilience throughout

t h e c a r n i v a l b u t N a v i g a t o r s ( 1 - 2 ) , PLHS (2-4) and St. Josephs (1-5) were too strong. The team made it to the semi-final but lost to St. Josephs (2-4). Brodie Laube and Jed Forster were stand out players for the boys team and b o t h s c o r e d touchdowns.

We would like to thank Henry Breen for managing the boys team, Barry Boyce for driving the bus and David Hall for umpiring the Cummins games. Also, a big thank you to Port Lincoln High School for planning and running the event.

EP SCHOOLS GYMKHANA

Early this term, Monday 6th May, ten students from Cummins Area School competed in the EP Schools Gymkhana at the Port Lincoln Race Course. The Year 5-12 competition h a d fi v e C u m m i n s secondary students (Maya Lloyd, Chelsea Crosby, Monique Pugsley, Patrick Denton, Alana Bascombe) and five primary students (Georgia Bascombe, Jessica Crosby, Sharmaine Crosby, Clayton Denton and Maddy Glover) who won the overall Primary Section Shield.

Over 30 events were participated in during the day, which included hacking, showjumping and gymkhana activities. All Cummins students won some ribbons and competed in good spirit and displayed great

sportsmanship during the day.

Thankyou to Daniel le C r o s b y a n d S a r a h Bascombe, who acted as Cummins team managers and took photos, compiled results and made sure students were at events when required. Well done everyone!!

REGIONAL SPORT YEAR 8-12 NETBALL

On Tuesday, 21st May the EP Regional Year 8-12 Netball Carnival was held at the Port Lincoln Netball Courts. Other schools participating included Ceduna, Cowell, Cleve, Tumby Bay, Port Lincoln High, Navigator and St Josephs. St Josephs were the stand out team of the carnival, winning Year 8/9 Division A and B and the Year 10 competitions. Navigator won the Open Division A and Cleve won the open Division B. 40 girls played in the five Cummins teams that competed. Although the teams only won a few matches between them, there were many positives outcomes from the carnival – played against high school students from all over Eyre Peninsula, players got the chance to play in many and varied court positions, players got to play with their friends which doesn’t always happen in Saturday competitions, players got plenty of court time as there were only eight players per team and students displayed excellent sportsmanship and impeccable behaviour while representing Cummins Area School.

Open Division AThis was the m o s t s u c c e s s f u l C u m m i n s team, winning 3 ma tches , drawing 1 and losing 1. In the first match they lost to N a v i g a t o r s (who won the division) 11-17. They won three matches in a row 12-9 against Ceduna, 20-14 against St Josephs and 15-10 against Cleve. In a nail biting conclusion to the day, Cummins drew with Port Lincoln 12 all.

Open Division BT h i s t e a m competed in a round rob in format as did four of the five divisions. They lost their first three macthes to Cleve, St Josephs and Tumby Bay 2 and had wins against Tumby Bay 1 and Navigator.

Year 10The Year 10 team won 2 matches and lost 3. They lost to the eventual w i n n e r s S t Josephs 1, 9-17 and also lost close matches 11-13 to Port lincoln High and 14-18 against S t J o s e p h s 2 . Excellent goal shooting saw the team win 25-7 against Cleve and 14-8 against Cowell.

Year 8/9 Division AThe winners of the compet i t ion, St Josephs were far too good in the first m a t c h , w i t h Cummins losing 10-24. Cummins then had an easy win 19-8 against Cowell. Although leading a half time, the team then went down 14-18 to Port Lincoln High and lost easily to Cleve 5-19. In a tight final match, Cummins narrowly went down 18-19 against Navigator College. Year 8/9 Division BThis team of Year 8 and 9 students played Port Lincoln High, St Josephs 2 and Tumby Bay and lost all games b e f o r e t h e n competing in the m a t c h e s t o de te rm ine fina l positions. The last two matches were close, losing by one goal 10-11 in one of the matches. The team had to learn to play many different positions especially as there were few natural goalies among the team members.

Sincere thanks to parent helpers Marika Giddings (umpire), Jo-Anne Lloyd and Nicole Buddle (coaches). Also thank you to students who helped umpire (Lucy-May Enright, Matilda Crettenden and Airlie O’Brien) and coach (Maya Doudle and Dakota Cafuta) during the carnival. Also, thank you to staff members Mardi Green and Lisa Richardson (bus drivers, coaches and umpires) and Bronny Fitzgerald (coach and umpire).

DANIEL DAY

On Friday 7th of June the year 12 class is running Daniel Day. Daniel is an orphan that the school has been sponsoring for 12 years (Pre-school – Year 9) thanks to Rosii Pedler’s efforts and dedication. We are raising money so that Daniel will be able to continue his schooling and receive addition equipment to enhance his education. It would be great if students’ could dress up and bring a gold coin donation so he can continue to receive his education. Daniel is 15 going on 16 and is in Year 9. He goes to the Renea Boys Secondary School in Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa.

The theme of Daniel Day this year is International Dress Up, where each class is allocated a different country to dress up as. Keep in mind that no inappropriate clothing or use of body paint is permitted on this day. We would like to see as many students as possible make the effort to dress up as their culture or nationality to make the daya success!

During recess there will be cupcakes and jelly cups available to buy near the canteen and then at lunch time there will also be sausages and steak sandwiches available for purchase. As added entertainment, The Lion King movie will be playing in the hall at lunch time for free.

Note: An order form was sent home on Friday, with an attached form for children to return to teachers by this Friday May 31 if they are purchasing food. The money needs to be paid with this form. The slip also included the countries that each class has been allocated:

Mrs Hall: Fairy Land! Mrs Ford: Egypt Ms Thorpe: MexicoMrs Jacquie Phelps: India Ms Strauss: Fiji Mrs McCallum: IrishMrs Plakakis: Greece Mrs Carr: Japan Mrs S Phelps: FranceYear 7: China Year 8: Scotland Year 9: New ZealandYear 10: Jamaica Year 11: Brazil Year 12: TanzaniaSTAFF: Spain

Thank you from the 2019 Year 12 Class

DANIEL: In January I was fortunate to catch up with Daniel at his school in Arusha. He is now boarding and only goes back to the Samaritan Orphanage in the school holidays. It was wonderful to see the difference we have made to this young man. He had previously struggled with his learning and had to repeat Year 8. Now at his new school he is passing his subjects well. He is very THANKFUL to our school for providing his education. I am so excited that this year’s Year 12 class are very keen to continue to fundraise to pay for Daniel’s school fees. This will be held Friday Week 6. This is a whole school event Reception to Year 12. We look forward to your participation!

Rural Care, Junior Primary classes and the community were invited to the library to take part in the 19th year of NSS. National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries,

schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Thank you Ms Baldwin, Sadie, Casey, Dakota, Lachie and Bethany.
