History of Recycling in New Jersey
• 1987 “New Jersey Statewide Mandatory Source Separation” • Mandated recycling of 3 products (Newspaper, Glass, Cans)
• 21 Counties equal 21 different recycling plans • Each county added mandatory recycling items
• Middlesex County Mandated Items Picked Up Curbside • Aluminum Cans, Bimetal Cans, Corrugated Cardboard, Glass Containers,
PET/DDPE Plastic (1 & 2), Magazines, Mixed paper, Newsprint, Office Paper

How to recycle?
• Originally Separated • One container for Glass, one container for cans, and newspapers bundled
• Duel Stream • Paper products in one container and bottles, cans, plastics in a different
container
• Single Stream: All Recyclables placed in the same container
