    01. The Astronautical Society of India (ASI) in the last week of December 2012 announced names of former secretary of the Department of Ocean Development, Dr. A.E. Muthunayagam and Dr. V.K. Saraswat,

    Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister for prestigious Aryabhatta Award for the year 2010 and 2011

    respectively. The two have been selected for the achievement in rocketry.

    Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy an associate Director of Research Centre Imarat Hyderabad and P. Kunhikrishnan of

    the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Thiruvananthapuram

    would receive ASI Awards for rocket and rocket related technologies for the year 2010 and 2011 respectively.

    02. Venkatesh Mannar a Channai-born Scientist of Indian Origin and President, Micronutrient

    Initiative, Canada was awarded with Canadas Highest Civilian Award the Order of Canada in

    the last week of December 2012.

    The Order of Canada instituted by Queen Elizabeth II in the year 1967 is a Canadian National

    Order and is the second highest honour of merit in the Country. It is placed next to Order of

    Merit.

    03. A senior Scientist from ISRO, S. Ramakrishnan took over as the Director of the Vikram

    Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram in the first week of January 2013.

    04. McGrath became the third inductee of the year 2012-13 to the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

    and will join Enid Bakewell and Brian Lara to the list and also became the 68th male

    member of the Hall of Fame.

    05. S. Ramakrishnan is the new Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. He replaced

    P S Veeraraghavan and carries four decades of experience in Rocketry.

    06. India and Pakistan exchanged the list which contains the names of nuclear units of two

    countries on 1 January 2013 as it is customary since 20 years.

    07. Syed Asif Ibrahim, the IPS officer, took over as the Director of Intelligence Bureau on 1

    January 2013 succeeding Nehchal Sandhu.

    08. According to Israels Central Bureau of Statistics the Israels Jewish population passed

    the mark of 6 million for first time.

    09. Scientists while analysing the Australian rocks claimed that they discovered certain

    traces of bacteria in Western Australia's Pilbara region, which lived a record-breaking

    3.49 billion years ago.

    10. CJI Altamas Kabir inaugurated the first fast-track court in Saket Court Complex, Delhi

    on 2 January 2013 for dealing with the crime against females.

    11. Urjit Patel was appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of

    India on 3 January 2013. Urjit Patel succeeds Subir Gokarn, who handled Monetary

    Policy in RBI.

    Urjit Patel is an economist with hawkish point of view on inflation. He authored a

    research paper called Dynamics of Inflation Herding: Decoding India's Inflationary

    Process along with Gangadhar Darbha, ED, Nomura.

    12. Union Government on 2 January 2013 constituted the 14th Finance Commission under

    former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Yaga Venugopal Reddy.

    13. Justice Amitava Roy on 2 January 2013 was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan

    High Court.

    14. US President Barack Obama on 3 January 2013 signed into law the annual defence policy

    Bill, authorising 633 billion dollars in defence spending for 2013.

    15. The Violinist M.S. Gopalakrishnan and the recipient of both Padma Bhushan and Padma

    Shri died on 3 January 2013.

    16. Nestle in January 2013 won a trademark lawsuit against Cadbury on the rights over the

    four fingered and three dimensional shape of the KitKat Chocolate Bar.

    17. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) on 3 January 2013 was awarded with the Lowest

    Accident Rate Award for 2012.

    18. Irelands prestigious Tipperary International Peace Prize for 2012 was awarded on 3

    January 2013 to Malala Yousafzai the teenage schoolgirl from Pakistan, who was shot by

    Talibans Gunman in October 2012.

    19. A team of researchers including that of an Indian-origin, at Oregon State University

    discovered in the first week of January 2013, one malfunctioning protein which leads to

    itchy, dry as well as inflamed skin wounds in a kind of eczema. The protein is called

    Ctip2 and it actually causes certain skin conditions by controlling body fat which keeps

    the skin hydrated and healthy.

    20. Astronomers studying about the newborn star called HD 142527, observed glimpses of

    the planets which were forming around it, depicting the stage of planetary evolution

    which was never seen before.

    21. Indian-American Srikanth Srinivasan on 4th January 2013 re-nominated by US

    President Barack Obama as Federal Judge for the District of Columbia Circuit.

    22. The 18th National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India was held on 28 -29

    December, 2012 in New Delhi.

    23. Indian Tennis player Sania Mirza and her American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands on 5

    January 2013 lifted the WTA Brisbane International trophy with a win against Kveta

    Peschke and Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

    24. Vice-captain of Indian Cricket team Virat Kohli on 4 January 2013 was

    named the International Cricketer of the Year.

    25. Sunmeet Kaur Sawhney, a housewife from the state of Punjab in January 2013 emerged

    as the first woman to win 5 crore rupees on the TV game show Kaun Banega Crorepati 6

    (KBC).

    26. Andy Murray won Brisbane International Tennis Title on 6 Jan. 2012 after

    defeating Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets by 7-6 and 6-4.

    27. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore in the first week of January 2013

    informed about its decision to come up with worlds largest solar telescope in

    Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. The project would commence by the end of year

    2013 and the telescope is likely to be placed at Hanle or Merak village near Pangong Lake

    in Ladakh. The telescope would be a 2-metre class, state-of-the-art National Large Solar

    Telescope (NLST). Its expected that the project would complete by 2017.

    The project has been planned with a budget of 300 crore rupees.

    28. National Data Centre of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is being

    developed at Gurgaon.

    29. Scientists discovered that oldest super predator of the world was the marine crocodile. It

    looked partly like a shark and partly like a threatening dolphin.

    30. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on 7 January 2013 announced withdrawal of

    support from the existing Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led coalition Government in

    Jharkhand. The support withdraw by JMM has reduced BJP to a minority party in the

    State Assembly.

    31. Air Marshal Kulwant Singh Gill is the new commandant of National Defence

    Academy. He took the office from outgoing Lt. Gen Ashok Singh on 8

    January 2013.

    32. Usain Bolt, the fastest man of the world and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the

    women's 100m Olympic champion won the male and female Athlete of the

    Year awards respectively on 8 January 2013 at Jamaica Athletics

    Administrative Association (JAAA) Golden Cleats Awards ceremony which

    took place at Terra Nova Hotel in St Andrew.

    33. Data released by RBI, reports that the Private Corporate Sector of India has registered a

    4.3 percent increase in the net profits in the first half of 2012-13

    34. Renault Duster was awarded the Car of the Year Award 2013 by the automotive

    magazine Autocar India on 9 January 2013 in Mumbai.

    35. Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl from Pakistan shot by Taliban received

    France's Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women's Freedom in Paris on 9 Jan

    2013.

    36. The oldest surviving woman of the world, Koto Okubo died at the age of 115 years in a

    town near Tokyo, Japan on 12 Jan. 2012.

    37. The Government of India on 11 January 2013 approved 14 FDI proposals

    which is said to be about 1311 crore rupees including that of Hindustan Port

    Ltd.

    38. Astronomers in the first week of January 2013 discovered the largest known structure in

    the Universe called Large Quasar Group (LQG) that is powered by super massive black

    holes clump together. This cluster of galaxies spans across four billion light years.

    39. At the Golden Globe Awards 2013, Argo won the Best Picture and Best Director Awards

    thrashing Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) won the best actor award.

    40. The Health Ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) in

    January 2013 decided to set up a Technical Working Group (TWG)

    41. ITU summoned the World Conference on International Telecommunications in Dubai

    which was held from 3-14 Dec 2012. New Global Telecoms Treaty was agreed upon.

    44. President Pranab Mukherjee on 15 January 2013 presented Krishi Karman awards for

    2011-12 to eighteen states

    45. India and Vietnam on 15 January 2013 signed (MoU) which directly meant for building

    capacity and developing institutional framework for MSMEs in Vietnam.

    46. Mahindra Satyam on 15 January 2013 signed an agreement with the Japanese firm

    TechMatrix Corporation digging at business opportunities in the healthcare market.

    Development and Parliamentary Affairs, as a leader of Indian delegation for

    48. The Law Ministry approved 80 crore Rupees for recruiting 2000 additional judges in the

    country for the fast track courts.

    49. Patiala House court complex in New Delhi on 16 January 2013 completely switched over

    to the e-stamping facility, becoming the first district court to do so.

    50. India and Bangladesh decided to speed up its rail link projects in order to increase the

    contact among the people of two neighbouring nations.

    51. Chinese Government appointed Wei Wei as its new Ambassador to India on 16 January

    2013.

    52. World Bank slashed the Global Growth Forecast to 2.4 percent on 15 January 2013. In

    June 2012 it made a forecast of gaining 3 percent growth.

    53. The Union Cabinet of India on 17 Jan 2013 agreed to enforce Presidents Rule in

    Jharkhand following the resignation of Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Arjun Munda.

    54. Mahaveer Golechha, the Indian researcher was selected to be felicitated with the Young

    Investigator Scholarship Award for his work on Alzheimer's drug.

    55. The Union Government on 17 January 2013 approved a 50 per cent reduction in the

    reserve price of spectrum used by CDMA mobile operators.

    56. Presidents Rule was imposed on Jharkhand on 18 January 2013 after

    the Union Cabinet approved its imposition.

    declared best actor (Barfi!) and Vidya Balan best actress (Kahaani).

    58. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 20 Jan. 2013 inaugurated Ghat Ki Guni tunnel at

    Jaipur. The tunnel connects jaipur with NH-11.

    59. INS Saryu, the largest shore patrol vessel was commissioned in the eastern coast for

    maritime surveillance around Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

    60. The Government of India has increased the import duty on platinum and gold from 4

    percent to 6 percent.

    61. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 23 January 2013 projected that the

    economic growth rate of India in 2013 would be 5.9 percent .

    62. Major Abup J Manjali of the Rashtriya Rifles was selected for Kirti Chakra for his

    extraordinary bravery efforts in counter- terrorist operations in J&K.

    63. The Election Commission of India celebrated the 3rd National Voters Day across the

    country on 25 January 2013

    64. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus on 26 January 2013 won the Womens Singles

    title of the Australian Open Tennis tournament at Melbourne.

    65. India successfully test fired a ballistic missile K-15, with a strike range of

    around 700 kilometres, from an underwater platform in Bay of Bengal.

    66. China on 27 January 2013 successfully performed the second interceptor missile test.

    This is for the second time that China announced testing such a missile.

    67. As per the Czech Republic Presidential election results declared on 25

    January 2013, Milos Zeman won and thus became the countrys first elected

    President.

    2013 final held in Melbourne .

    69. Mumbai won its 40th Ranji trophy at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 28 Jan 2013

    defeating Saurashtra .

    70. Aircel on 28 January 2013 launched Free Roaming Service for Voice, SMS and Data

    71. Tiger Woods on 29 January 2013 won his 75th PGA Tour title in the Farmers Insurance

    Open at Torrey Pines.

    72. India and Australia on 28 January 2013 agreed to concentrate on priority areas like

    energy and food security for mutual benefit of the two countries.

    73. World anti Leprosy Day was observed on 30 January 2013 to focus attention

    and create awareness about the air-borne disease.

    1. NASA on 31 January 2013 launched a new communication satellite TDRS

    to stay in touch with its space station astronauts.

    2. P.R. Vasudeva Rao became the Director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic

    Research (IGCAR) succeeding S.C Chetal, on 31 January 2013.

    3. India dropped nine places to 140th rank in the list of 179 countries in the latest

    World Press Freedom Index 2013.

    4. The Union Government of India on 31 January 2013 signed an agreement with the

    Asian Development Bank (ADB) for 100 million US dollar loan.

    5. Thirty Indian software product companies joined hands to form their own new

    association called iSpirt, marking a break-up with the IT industry body NASSCOM.

    6. World cancer day was observed on 4 February 2013 in order to raise

    awareness about this illness.

    7. India and Austria on 5 Feb 2013 signed a pact on social security at Vienna for

    exemption of social security contribution of Indian professionals in Austria .

    8. Rajkeswur Purryag, President of Republic of Mauritius visited India from 3 Jan 2013

    to 10 Jan 2013. He was honoured with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award.

    9. King and Queen of Bhutan visited India from 23 to 30 January 2013. The King of

    Bhutan was the Chief Guest for the Republic Day Celebration.

    10. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became the first Iranian President to visit Egypt after the

    Tehran's 1979 Islamic revolution. He paid a state visit to Egypt to attend OIC .

    11. Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, the President of Nepal was on a six day visit to India from 24

    December 2012 to 29 December 2012.

    12. The Union Cabinet of India on 6 February 2013 gave approval to DRDO for

    developing an indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System for IAF.

    13. YES Bank, the fourth largest private sector Bank of India was awarded the Financial

    Institutions Syndicated Deal of the Year 2012 in its Asia Pacific Region.

    14. Book titled Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Germany by Professor Anita B. Pfaff

    was given to Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 6 February 2013.

    15. Researchers from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg discovered the

    largest prime number of the world which is 17 million digits long.

    16. In the 2013 Pyeongchang Special Olympics World Winter Games, India

    returned with maximum number of medals (46). The games finished off

    on 5 February 2013.

    17. CCEA approved the proposal of merging NLCP and NWCP to develop a new scheme

    named NPCA (National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-systems).

    18. The Union Cabinet of India on 7 February 2013 approved raise in the authorized

    capital of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, NABARD to

    20000 crore rupees from 5000 crore rupees.

    The authorized capital was increased with the aim to enlarge the operations and

    broadening the activities of NABARD.

    19. Parliament Attack Convict, Afzal Guru was hanged on 9 Feb 2013 at Tihar Jail after

    his mercy petition was cancelled by the President of India.

    20. NASA on 9 February 2013 announced that its Mars rover Curiosity

    drilled into Mars surface. The drilling took place first time on 8

    February 2013.

    21. Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sitar legend was honoured with the posthumous Lifetime

    Achievement Grammy award. Anoushka Shankar accepted the award on 9 Feb 2013.

    22. Lydia Ko, the teenager became youngest winner of a women's European Tour golf

    event by winning at New Zealand Women's Open in Christchurch on 10 February

    2013.

    23. US Marine General Joseph Dunford took over the command of the

    NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

    24. Pope Benedict XVI announced on 11 February 2013 that he would resign

    at the end of the month.

    25. Conference for South Asian Autism Network (SAAN) for Autism Spectrum Disorders

    (ASD) concluded on 11 Feb 2013 with Delhi Declaration.

    26. Code name given to secret plan for executing Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist Afzal

    Guru in Tihar Jail on 9 February 2013 was Operation Three Star.

    27. The Health Ministers of India and Bangladesh signed a MoU on Health in New Delhi

    on 12 February 2013.

    28. Head of Finmeccanica, Giuseppe Orsi was arrested for his involvement in a bribe

    scandal to secure an Indian defence helicopter deal of 3600 crore rupees.

    on 15 February 2013.

    SAP Open is the second-oldest tennis tournament in US.

    58. 140 nations adopted the worlds first mercury treaty on 19 February 2013 at Geneva

    to limit the use of health hazardous mercury.

    59. The Kerala Govt. on 20 February 2013 approved Kerala Abkari Act Amendment

    Ordinance 2013, thus raising age limit for buying or selling liquor from 18 to 21.

    60. Ratan Tata, the former head of Tata Group was awarded the life time achievement

    award 2012 by Ernst & Young on 21 February 2013.

    million US dollars with various banks.

    62. The Union Cabinet of India approved merger of Bharat Heavy Plate &

    Vessels Ltd. (BHPV) with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) on 21

    February 2013.

    63. India's Sania Mirza and her American partner Bethanie-Mattek Sands won the Dubai

    Tennis Championship on 23 February 2013.

    64. Assam became the first state in India to produce over 500 million

    kilogram tea for two years in a row.

    65. NASA scientists spotted the youngest black hole yet in the Milky Way galaxy called

    W49B, which is just 1000-years-old.

    66. Nicos Anastasiades, the centre-right DISY (the Democratic Rally) party

    leader won the presidential elections of Cyprus on 24 Feb 2013 with 57.5

    percent votes.

    67. Marina Erakovic won her first WTA title, US National Indoor Tennis Championship

    68. Six foreign micro and mini spacecrafts and SARAL were launched successfully by

    PSLV-C20 rocket on 25 February 2013 from Sriharikota.

    69. Jelena Jankovic, the former world no. 1 won the WTA Copa Claro Colsanitas Cup

    2013 in Bogota, Colombia on 24 February 2013.

    70. Mozilla, the software community which is known for producing the Firefox web

    browser, launched Web-based Smartphone operating system on 24 February 2013.

    71. Delhi became the first state in India to ban the manual scavenging. Delhi

    on 26 February 2013 banned deployment of cleaning staff for manual sewer cleaning.

    72. The Surrey Space Centre (SSC) of the University of Surrey on 26 February 2013

    announced that STRaND-1 was launched successfully into space from India.

    73. Anupam Kher, the veteran Bollywood actor was awarded with the City Proclamation

    Award in Los Angeles in the last week of February 2013.

    74. Capital of India, Delhi was ranked at number 32 or the worst position in the crucial

    environmental parameters of Environmental Performance Index (EPI).

    75. Sugata Mitra was awarded the million-dollar TED Prize on 26 February 2013 for

    pursuing his idea for building the schools in the Internet.

    01. Vice Admiral, Anurag G Thapliyal took over as the Director General of the Indian Coast

    Guard on 28 February 2013.

    02. The Indian Coast Guard Interceptor Boat C-154 was commissioned by the Chief

    Secretary to Government of Maharashtra on 22 February 2013 in Mumbai.

    03. A MoU was signed between India and UK to strengthen their cooperation in Earth

    Sciences and environmental research on 1 March 2013.
