FDI in Multi Brand Retail
A Double Edged Sword
National Issue
Its less about the sword and more
about the swordsman who uses it
FDI in Multi Brand Retail is the issue which has
gripped the imagination of the entire nation. Govern-
ments decision to allow 51% FDI in the Multi Brand
Retail has given enough salvo to the people in op-
position and to the people in power to fire it at each
other in order to gain the political mileage. But the is-
sue in itself is very important from the countrys eco-
nomic perspective, as the retail sector is the second
largest employer after the Agriculture sector. Indian
Council for Research on International Economic Re-
lations (ICRIER) study says that Indian retail sector is
expected to contribute around 22 per cent of Indias
GDP by 2012. According to the various estimates
more than 4 crore retail-
ers are having employ-
ment from the sector.
These 4 crore job hold-
ers are the breadwin-
ners of around 20 crore
population. Agriculture
is one of the sectors
which is directly associ-
ated with the retail sec-tor and Agriculture and
allied activities contrib-
utes around 14% in the
Indias GDP. More than
two third of countrys
population is still de-
pendent on agriculture
and allied activities.
Indian retail market is one of the fastest growing retail
markets in the world and is valued at around US $
450 billion. Indian Retail market is considered as one
of the five biggest retail markets of the world. India is
one of the most attractive destinations for the globalinvestors as India is having a rapidly growing middle
class economy with the high levels of disposable
income. More than 30 percent of Indian population
is living in urban area and the rapid growth of
urbanization contributes further positively. Around
64 percent of Indias population is in the working age
group, this makes India even more lucrative from
the FDI in retail perspective. Apart from this Indias
organised retail market is growing with the rate of
around 39 percent per annum in compared to around6 percent of the unorganised retail.
One of the important distinguishing feature of Indian
Retail market is its structural aspect. Around 94
percent of Indian retail market is in the unorganised
sector, whereas in case of US, 85% of its retail
market is in the organised form. This is why also

International experience shows that the big
supermarkets causes loss of livelihood to the
small retailers. Since small retailers work on
small scale and do not get the benefits of the
large scale economics and thus has less profit
margins, they virtually would be wiped out as
they would not be able to compete with the
giant retailers. In India almost 4 crore people
are working in the retail sector and more than
95% of those are in the unorganized sector

structural differences. Chinese economy is
predominantly a manufacturing economy

manufactured product all across the globe
including US and the European countries and
hence China have more benefits in allowing
the big companies to enter in the retail trade.

giants in place of number of retailers, the
competition will shrink, and the big retail giants
may indulge in creating monopoly/oligopoly,
and thus will be fixing the arbitrary prices and
thus may fuel the inflation especially in case of
the essential commodities like food products,
and this it may jeopardize the interest of the
ordinary consumer.

Just five days before the Fourth anniversary of the
26-11-2008 Mumbai Attack, Pakistan national and
LeT terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone
survivor of the Pakistan-based militant squad that
consisted of 10 terrorist which were responsible for
a rampage through Mumbai that killed 166 people,
was hanged till death amid great secrecy on 21st
November 2012 at 7.30 am at the Yerwada central
prison in Pune. Kasab signed his death warrant
before being moved to the Pune jail on November
19. Later kasab was buried inside the Yerwada
jail at 9.30 am. Yerawada is one of the two jails in
Maharashtra (the other being Nagpur Central Jail)
where hanging facilities are available.
With respect to the hanging of kasab, Union Minister
of Home Affairs Sushil Kumar Shinde said: Ajmal
Kasab was hanged at 7:30am. It took the Maharashtra
government less than two weeks to hang Kasabafter President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy
petition on November 5. Two days later, Union
Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde signed on the
file. It was sent to the Maharashtra government on
November 8 and November 21, today, was fixed
as the date of execution. Union home secretary R
K Singh said: Family members of Kasab informed
about the hanging through a letter sent by courier.
It is to be noted here that after nearly a four-year-
long legal battle, the Supreme Court on August 29
had confirmed the death penalty awarded to the
Lashkar-e-Taiba operative by a trial court which was
later upheld by the Bombay high court.
Execution of Kasab may have brought an end to one
chapter of the 26/11 and may give a temporary sigh
of relief and a reason to rejoice, but the real justice
is still elusive as the real perpetrators are still at
large and roaming free in the neighbouring country.
India should try and put international diplomatic and
other type of pressures in order to bring the real
culprits to the book. Along with this, in the wake of
such terrorist attack there is a need to establish a
separate dedicated mechanism and enactment of
a separate law dealing with such heinous and anti
national crimes.

The principal deliberative Organ
of UN, United Nations General
Assembly (UNGA) voted by an
overwhelming majority on the historic
day of 29th November to grant the
Non - Member Observer State
status to Palestine. The resolution
was passed by the 138 votes in favourof the resolution while 9 members
(Canada, Czech Republic, Israel,
Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru,
Panama, Palau, United States) voted

the voting and 5 countries were

UK were the prominent among the
countries which abstained. UNGA

UN and every member country have

While the resolution was being
brought before the UNGA, Mahmoud
Abbas, President of the Palestinian
Authority said that this is the last
chance to save the long elusive
two-state solution. And he further
said the objective is to Breathe New
Life into Peace Process.
This vote of 29th November is a step in the direction of Palestinian Statehood. Now Palestine would be able to
join various UN agencies. Most importantly, it can now apply to sign the Rome Statute of International Criminal
Court and thus can press the charges against Israel for committing crimes against the people of Gaza.
Palestine will Join the Holy See ( Vatican City ) as the Non - Member Observer State to the United Nations.
It can be recalled that earlier, in 2011, Palestine applied for the full membership of the UN, but the bid was
cut short after UN Security Council did not approve the same. UN Membership decision is taken by the UN

Nobel Prize in Physics
The 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded jointly
to Serge Haroche (French National born in Moocco)
and David J. Wineland (US) for ground-breaking
experimental methods that enable measuring and
manipulation of individual quantum systems.Haroche and Wineland have opened the door to a
new era of experimentation with quantum physics by
demonstrating the direct observation of individual
quantum particles without destroying them. For
single particles of light or matter the laws of classical
physics cease to apply and quantum physics takes
over. But single particles are not easily isolated from
their surrounding environment
and they lose their mysterious
quantum properties as soon as
they interact with the outside
world. Thus many seemingly
bizarre phenomena predicted
by quantum physics could
not be directly observed, and
researchers could only carry out
thought experiments that might in principle manifest
these bizarre phenomena.
Their ground-breaking methods have enabled this
field of research to take the very first steps towards
building a new type of super fast computer based on
quantum physics. This research has also led to the
construction of extremely precise clocks that could
become the future basis for a new standard of time,
with more than hundred-fold greater precision than
present-day caesium clocks.
Nobel Prize in Chemistry
The 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded
jointly to Robert J. Lefkowitz (US) and Brian K. Kobilka
(US) for studies of G-protein-coupled receptors.

named after the town
of Much Wenlock inShropshire - which
hosted a precursor to
the modern Olympic
Games in the 19th
Century - and the birthplace of the
Paralympic Games, Stoke Mandeville

The Olympic Torch Relay
The 2012 Summer Olympics torch relay
was run from 19 May until 27 July, prior
to the London 2012 Summer Olympics. It
toured the United Kingdom, three crown
dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and
the Isle of Man, and also the Republic ofIreland. The 2012 Olympic Torches were
made of aluminium alloy skin, perforated
by 8,000 circles to represent the 8,000
torchbearers who would carry the flame.
The triangular shape of torches represented:
The three London 2012 Olympic values
- respect, excellence and friendship,
three Olympic Games hosted by the UK
(1908, 1948 and 2012), the 2012 Olympics vision
of sport, education and culture. It also represented
the Three Motto of Olympic games - Citius, Altius,
Fortius (means faster, higher, stronger). Fuel used
for the torch ignition was combination of butane and
propane.
It is lit from the suns rays at the Temple of Hera in
Olympia in Greece. The Flame is then delivered to
the Host Country. The Olympic Flame stands for
peace, unity and friendship. It ends its journey as the
last Torchbearer lights the Cauldron at the Opening
Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, marking the
official start of the Games. The Flame then stays lit
until it is put out at the Closing Ceremony, signifyingthe end of the Games.
