BANKING AND FINANCE

1. The World Bank Board has approved$650 million towards the third loan for the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (a freight-only rail line). This project mainly aims at improving the speed of movement of raw materials and finished goods between the northern and eastern parts of India.

2. According to the official statementfrom Finance Ministry, a person may make a declaration in respect of an undisclosed asset located outside India under the compliance provisions of the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015 (Black Money Act) before or on September 30. 2015.

3. According to the World Bank Report,India’s GDP crossed the $2-Trillion mark in 2014 and at present stands at $2.067 Trillion. India is among the world the fastest growing economies this year. After taking 60 years to reach the $1-trillion mark, India added the next trillion in just seven years. Going by income, India is still in the lower middle income category.

4. Banking Giant State Bank of Indiahas launched an initiative called Project Tatkal to provide doorstep services and expedite home loans application process. The Project Tatkal will help get the loan within 10 days after receipt of application form and relevant supporting documents. The implementation will be done at large centres with sizable home loan business.

5. HDFC Bank has become the firstIndian bank to launch Watch Banking for Apple Watch. The main objective is to provide banking services through all wearable devices across platforms like iOS and Android.

6. Government of India has notified rulesfor calculating overseas income and assets under the stringent foreign black money law that came into force on July 1. The value of the overseas assetsincludes

• immovable property• jewellery and precious stones• archaeological collections and

paintings• shares and securities and shares in

unlisted firmsThe value of an overseas bank account will be the sum of all deposits made in the account since its opening.

7. Reserve Bank of India has announcedthat the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in manufacturing of tobacco products is prohibited, though activities such as retail and wholesale trading fall under the sectoral restrictions. FDI is prohibited in the manufacturing of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes, of tobacco or of tobacco substitutes.

8. Qatar is the fastest growing economyamong the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and it is expected to grow by more than 7 per cent this year.

9. Union Bank of India has launched initiatives such as IMPS at branches and M-passbooks for its customers. The bank has become the first lender to launch immediate payment service (IMPS) through branches for its retail and corporate customers by integrating the platform to its core banking solution.

10. India’s largest lender, the StateBank of India has raised its information technology (IT) budget to improve its digital offerings. The bank will spend nearly Rs.4,000 crore before March 2016 and significantly upgrade its IT back-end.

11. The BRICS Nations have signed anagreement to create a USD 100 billion forex pool to help each other “in case of any problems with dollar liquidity”. The contributions are,

• India – USD 18 billion• Brazil – USD 18 billion• Russia – USD 18 billion• China – USD 41 billion• South Africa – USD 5 billion

12. India’s largest private sector bank,ICICI, has created a dedicated payments gateway for the mobile banking transaction. This system will enable much faster transactions for its customers. This system will attract more customers for mobile banking than for internet banking.

13. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hasannounced that it has issued Rs 100 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 with a new numbering pattern. Now, the numerals in both the number panels of 1oo rupees banknotes will be in ascending size from left to right while the first three alphanumeric numerical characters will remain constant in size.

14. According to funds trackingcompany EPFR Global, India focused equity funds have witnessed an inflow of over $ 9.5 billion from worldwide investors in the first six months of the year. In the mean time China has seen a hefty outflow of $ 17 billion.

15. Chief Economic Advisor ArvindSubramanian has announced that Indirect tax revenues grew 37.5% in the first quarter of current fiscal. He said that the indirect tax collections – which include excise, Customs and service taxes – grew 14.5 per cent in the first quarter from a year ago.

16. National Bank for Agriculture andRural Development (NABARD) has set a target of providing Rs 30,000 crore as credit to farmers for irrigation over the next three years. The Bank has already sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore so far in 2015.

17. Small Industries Development Bankof India (SIDBI) has signed an MoU with Snapdeal, an e-commerce major in India, to provide financial support to its MSME vendors. The MoU was signed by Dr Kshatrapati Shivaji, CMD, SIDBI and Kunal Bahl, CEO, Snapdeal.

18. The Reserve Bank of India has setup a 14-member committee for working out a medium-term (five-year) measurable action plan for financial inclusion. The committee will be headed by Deepak Mohanty, Executive Director of RBI. He will review the existing policy of financial inclusion, including supportive payment system and customer protection framework.

19. The Reserve Bank has asked banksto levy any late payment penalty on credit card customers, or report them to credit information companies, only if the payment has been due for more than three days. For banks, RBI said they can treat a credit card as non preforming asset if the ‘minimum amount due’ has not been paid within 90 days from the due date.

20. The Income Tax has launched anambitious drive to bring one crore new taxpayers under its net after the central government initiative to broaden the tax base.

21. China’s renminbi (RMB) may becomethe world’s fourth most-used international currency, replacing the Japanese yen. The International Monetary Forum had raised the RMB Internationalisation Index from 0.02 in 2009 to 2.47 in 2014. The top three currencies are the dollar, the euro and the British pound.

22. A new $100 billion BRICS bankdedicated to the emerging BRICS countries has formally started its operations in China’s commercial hub Shanghai. The “New Development Bank (NDB)”, backed by the so-called emerging BRICS nations Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has been viewed as a challenge to Washington-based institutions. Kamath, 67, will be the bank’s President for the first five years.

23. Pension Fund Regulatory andDevelopment Authority’s (PFRDA) Chairman Hemant Contractor has announced that Non-resident Indians (NRIs) can invest in National Pension System (NPS) to get a social security cover. RBI has communicated it to PFRDA that NRIs are now eligible to make such investments, however, the Central Government will come out with a clarification on the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) guidelines.

24. National Commodity and DerivativesExchange Ltd (NCDEX) has launched a mobile app named NCDEX App to give anytime, anywhere access to prices and market information about commodities traded on it. The online commodity exchange has partnered with Trakinvest, a Singapore based financial technology firm, to develop this app.

25. IT companies CSC and HCLTechnologies have signed an agreement to form a banking software and services company to provide technology services and solutions to the banking industry.

IDFC Ltd has announced that itsunit IDFC Bank Ltd has got a license from the Reserve Bank of India for undertaking banking business in India under Section 22(1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. IDFC becomes the second lender to enter the banking sector after more than a decade. IDFC Bank plans to start operation from October 1 2015 with an initial loan book of around Rs 55,000 crore with an estimated 20 branches.

27. The GOI is planning to unveil anexclusive all-in-one insurance product for farmers as part of its ongoing social security scheme. The step has been initiated as the incidents of farmer suicides in the country are increasing. To be known as the Unified Package Insurance Scheme (Bhartiya Krishi Bima Yojana), the policy would flaunt nine features with mandatory crop insurance.

28. Manila-headquartered Asian Development Bank (ADB) has a loan pact worth USD 300 million with the government of India to support the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM). The NUHM is aimed at improving health status of the country’s urban population. This will be ADB’s first health project in India. The loan has been provided from the ADB’s Ordinary Capital Resources. It has a 20-year term and includes a grace period of 5 years.

29. Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB)has launched a mobile banking app ‘Kotak Bharat’ to provide mobile banking services to customers in the remotest of regions. The special thing about the App is it requires no internet connectivity.

The app is Android-based. It works on the existing SMS banking keyword process platform.

30. Union Cabinet has approved settingup of an Online National Agriculture Market that will provide more options to farmers for selling their produce. Decision in this regard was taken at a Union Cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

31. Greece has become the firstdeveloped nation to default on International Monetary Fund (IMF) debt. It has defaulted on a 1.7 billion dollars payment to IMF. The deadline for debt payment was missed by Greece after Eurozone Finance Ministers refused to extend its bailout.

32. Mahindra Defence Systems Limited,a subsidiary of Mahindra Group and Airbus Helicopter have inked pact to form a joint venture (JV) company to produce helicopters in India. In this regard, both entities have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a joint venture.

33. India’s seafood exports touched anall-time high at 33,441 crore rupees during the financial year 2014-15. The data was released by Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA). As per data the marine product exports from the country have crossed all time high breaking previous records in quantity, rupee value and dollar terms.

34. India and Kazakhstan launched thefirst exploratory drilling at Satpayev oil block owned by India’s ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) and Kazakhstan company KazMunaiGaz.

35. Adani Group has inked amemorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tamil Nadu Government to set up 650 Mega Watt (MW) solar power plant in Ramanathapuram district.

36. eMudhra Limited, a leadingcertifying firm in the country for digital signatures launched first of its kind eSign services in the country as part of the Digital India Vision.

37. Union Ministry of Skill Developmentand Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) signed MoUs to address the Industry’s need of Skilled Manpower. These MoUs will enhance strategic tie between both parties to scale up skill development and entrepreneurship initiatives in the country.

38. Healthcare firm Practo has acquiredMumbai based Genii, a technology services start-up focused on product design and development. With this acquisition, Genii’s founders Varun Vohra and Aditya Anand and their 11 member team will join Bengaluru based Practo.

39. Union Ministry of Skill Developmentand Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on skill development. The MoU seeks to establish a framework for joint action to address the need for skilled human resources in the health sector.

40. India has in imposed definitive anti-dumping duty of 342.76 dollars per tonne on all phenol imports on imports of Phenol from South Africa. This anti-dumping duty will be valid for a period of five years.

41. Union Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) has given nod to Chinese Telecom manufacturer Huawei to set up a manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu for its components.

42. The Cabinet Committee onEconomic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the creation of an Intra-state Transmission System (ISTS) in 7 states across the country. The seven States are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

43. Tata Advanced Systems Limited(TASL) and US-based aircraft maker Boeing have signed a strategic framework agreement for aerospace and defence manufacturing. The agreement was signed by Sukaran Singh, MD & CEO of TASL and Shelley Lavender, President of Boeing Military Aircraft in lines with Make in India in Hyderabad, Telangana.

44. The GOI has brought 39 morePharmaceutical drugs under price control as part of its efforts to make medicines affordable in the country. The drugs brought under this price control regime include the durgs which can be used to treat diseases such as diabetes and digestive disorders.

45. Union Cabinet meeting chaired byPrime Minister Narendra Modi approved the redevelopment of 400 major railway stations. This approval will enable the Union Ministry of Railways to accelerate the redevelopment of ‘A-1’ and ‘A’ category railway stations across the country. These stations generally are located in major cities, metros, pilgrimage centres and important tourist destinations.

46. Union Cabinet has given nod tointroduce composite foreign investment cap in a bid to streamline the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) structure. Decision in this regard was taken during Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

47. India and Russia have signed acustoms and liberalize business visas agreement to boost trade between both countries to remove the hindrances and boost commerce.

48. European Union (EU) has approveda short-term loan of 7.16 billion euros to Greece after it was backed by the 28 member states. This loan will allow Greece to pay its debt to European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) till new bailout plan is ratified.

49. Reserve Bank of India has signed aspecial currency swap agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBS). Under this agreement, Sri Lankan bank can draw up to 1.1 billion dollars for a maximum period of 6 months. It was signed with an intention to mitigate the possible currency volatility in the spirit of strengthening bilateral relations and economic ties of India with Sri Lanka.

50. Mashable, a New York-based newsand blogging portal has joined hands with India.com, a Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) sponsored website for the launching of its Indian version in India.

51. KFC and the Indian RailwayCatering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have entered into partnership to launch a delivery system for commuters on trains. Under e-catering service initiatives commuters now can place order for KFC meal while booking tickets through IRTC website.

52. Indian pharmaceutical major Lupinhas acquired US based Gavis Pharmaceuticals in cash-free and debt-free transaction for 880 million dollars (around 5,606 crore rupees).

53. The Insurance Regulatory andDevelopment Authority of India (IRDAI) have constituted three committees for review of regulations in insurance sector.

The life insurance committee will specifically work for the regulations in areas like liabilities, assets and solvency margin and appointed actuary.

The general insurance committee will specifically work for the regulations in areas like claim reserving and appointed actuary.

Reinsurance committee will specifically work for the regulations on the issues relating to registration of branches of foreign reinsurers among others.

54.India’s largest commodities exchangeplatform, Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX) has signed a MoU with the US based CME group to set its operations in GIFT City in Gujarat.

55. European Union (EU) has bannedthe marketing of around 700 generic medicines among its member countries. This is the largest suspension imposed on the sales and distribution of generic drugs ordered by EU which will come into effect on August 21, 2015 and it will be applicable to all 28 member nations.

56. A Bengaluru based gold Jewellerymanufacturing company Rajesh Exports Ltd (REL) bought the world’s largest gold refining company Valcambi from US-based mining company Newmont Mining Corporation. REL had to fetch over 2560 crore rupees all in cash to buy Valcambi refinery.

57. Maharashtra government has placeda comprehensive plan to develop six solar cities in order to add solar capacity of 7,500 MW in the state. To enhance solar capacity in country Centre has planned to develop 55 solar cities across the country among them six are from Maharashtra these are – Nagpur, Thane, Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Shirdi and Nanded.

58. Israel’s largest drug maker TevaPharmaceutical agreed to buy generic drugs business of Allergan Plc for USD 40.5 billion. According to the agreement Teva will make cash payment of USD 33.75 billion and USD 6.75 billion of its stock for Allergan.

59. The Competition Commission ofIndia (CCI) has imposed fine of 420 crore rupees on the local unit of Hyundai Motor Co. The fined was imposed after CCI investigation had found that Hyundai was engaged in anti-competitive practices.

60. India’s Kalyani Group and Israel’s Rafaelhave partnered to produce Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) in India. In this regard both the entities have formed a manufacturing Joint Venture (JV) and this move is considered to deepen India-Israel strategic cooperation.

61. World’s second largest automakerGeneral Motors (GM) has announced to invest USD 1 billion (6, 400 crore rupees) in India by 2020 and has decided to close its loss making plant at Halol, Gujarat.

62. Department of Industrial Policy andPromotion (DIPP) has given nod to Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for their conceptual development plan (CDP) report on Vizag Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) and Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) respectively.

1. India and the US have signed amemorandum of understanding to set up the Rs 50 crore PACE setter Fund. The main objective of this fund is to give boost to commercialization of innovation in off-grid clean energy solutions. This is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama’s commitment to strengthening and expanding the US-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy (PACE).

2. The Union Cabinet has approved PradhanMantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). The ambitious scheme aims at providing irrigation facilities to every village in India by converging ongoing irrigation schemes implemented by various ministries. The scheme with an outlay of Rs 50,000 crore spread over a period of five years starting from 2015-16.

3. Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badalhas launched the state ePMS Portal or Electronic Projects Management System portal to fast track infrastructural development.

4. Government of India has launched anonline registration system for foreign employers who look for Indian workers. According to the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi, all the foreign employers must register in the eMigrate system, which will be vetted by the Indian mission. After registration, the employer can raise the demand for Indian workers in the eMigrate system and seek a permit to recruit either directly or through recruiting agents online.

5. The nationwide Mobile NumberPortability (MNP) has become operational from July 3, 2015. This facility will allow customers to keep their existing mobile phone numbers while shifting between states and circles.

6. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekarsaid the government is thinking of launching an internet green channel and also provide one hour programme on environment on ‘DD Kisan’ channel. The Government is planning to go for online channel rather than a dedicated television channel on environment, as the later would require huge investment.

7. Shri Narendra Modi flagged off the DigitalIndia initiative. Digital initiatives aims to make all citizens digitally literate and bring internet and e-governance to the houses of all the Indians. 11. BSNL has launched a pre-paid card linkedmobile wallet service which would allow the customers to transfer money, pay for services as well as withdraw cash of up to Rs 1 lakh. The wallet service has been named as Speed Pay, which allows a customer to load money even if he does not have a bank account.

12. The government of India has decided torecognize the rag pickers and also to give national award for their contribution to keep India clean. The missile system can target aircraft upto 30 km away, at altitudes upto 18,000 metres. 31. The total number of telephoneconnections in India has crossed the record one billion mark in May, bolstered by growth in number of mobile users. According to the data released by TRAI, at the end of May, total number of telephone connections stood at 1,002.05 million, of which 975.78 million connections were wireless or mobile.

41. The Ministry of Railways has notifiedsome new rules pertaining to purchase of Takal tickets. Under the new rules, passengers booking Tatkal tickets from computerized reservation counters will no longer be required to furnish photocopy of identity proof or to indicate its number at the time of booking at the counter or through internet.

42. The GOI has raised the daily minimumwage from Rs. 137 to Rs. 160. This goes into effect from July 2015 and is the first time in 2 years that the minimum wage has been altered.

43. Indian roads were at their deadliest in2014 claiming more than 16 lives every hour on average. Over 1.41 lakh people died in crashes, 3% more than the number of fatalities in 2013. The numbers of crashes and of people left injured stands at 4.5 lakh and 4.8 lakh respectively.

44. The government of India is going to issuean order putting a ban on use, sale and purchase of plastic-made national flags in the country. In March, the Bombay High Court had asked Maharashtra Government to come up with a comprehensive policy to ensure a ban on use, sale and purchase of national flags made of plastic.

Passengers can report any illegal act observed while travelling in trains instantly and get an FIR registered without interrupting their journey. Delhi Police has launched the service and it is available 24 x 7. 46. According to the official data released byNational Crime Records Bureau, Bhopal is India’s suicide and road accident capital. The data shows that the city recorded 56.6 suicides per 1 lakh population, and 95 road accident deaths for every lakh motor vehicles – the highest rate among 53 mega cities.

47. Animal rights activists have urged thecentral government to ban export of buffalo meat even as they lauded Union ministry of commerce’s recent statement that export of beef has been prohibited in accordance with country’s foreign trade policy.

48. India is working on creating a ‘strategicuranium reserve’ to ensure its atomic power reactors do not face shortage of the crucial nuclear fuel. The reserve pool could be anywhere between 5000 MT to 15,000 MT which can last for 5-10 years.

49. According to the National Crime RecordsBureau (NCRB) report, 28,360 cases of ‘railway accidents’ were reported in 2014, showing a decrease of 9.2% compared to 2013 (31,236 cases). Over 25,000 people died and 3,882 were injured in railway accidents in 2014.

Maharashtra reported the maximum such cases, accounting for 42.5% of total cases of fall from train or collision of trains with people.

50. Kerala government and Adani Ports havedecided to sign the construction agreement of Vizhinjam port. The decision was taken at a meeting by chief minister Oommen Chandy with Adani Ports Officials. The port, a long pending project of the state, was first proposed in 1991, but did not materialise due to various reasons. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 7,500 crore which includes investments made by the Kerala government.

56. According to the Home Ministry, morethan 10,000 NGOs licences cancelled by Central Government till March 2015 for violating foreign funding norms. After inspections and scrutiny of accounts, 15 cases were referred to CBI and 10 to states for further investigation and prosecution. Accounts of 23 associations have been frozen.

57. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar willinaugurate the Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute at Mohali on July 25. 58. GOI has proposed to transfer fertilizersubsidy directly into farmers’ accounts and is planning a road map for the pilot project. A major challenge in operationalising this scheme lies in identification of beneficiary farmers as in many states the land records are neither accurate nor updated.

59. The Cabinet Committee of EconomicAffairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal of the Union Home Ministry to extend the deadline for implementation of Crime and Criminals Tracking network and Systems (CCTNS) project to March 2017.

60. The Central Government has announcedthat 14 Indian States and Union Territories (UTs) have achieved or exceeded the literacy rate of 80%. The announcement has been by Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The 14 States and UTs are: Kerala, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, NCR of Delhi, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Sikkim and Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s SmartCity initiative got its first nomination from Puducherry, a former French colony, which was awarded 75 out of a potential 100 points by the High Powered Steering Committee. 63. According to the US Green BuildingCouncil (USGBC), India ranks third in the annual ranking of the top 10 countries for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings. LEED is a widely used green building rating system. LEED is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings. Canada and China are on the top two positions in this list respectively.

64. Union environment minister PrakashJavadekar said that toxic air in Delhi is killing at least 80 people every day. According to the study, 45% of premature deaths linked to air pollution in Delhi could be avoided if the city met the national ambient air quality standard for PM 2.5 that is 60 micrograms per cubic metre.

65. The Supreme Court has permitted thestates to exercise their power to remit the sentences of life convicts if they have already served more than 14 years of imprisonment. The SC had on July 14 last year restrained the states from releasing lifers after remitting their sentences while staying Tamil Nadu government’s decision to release Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts on the ground that they had served more than 22 years in prison.

66. The Supreme Court has directed allprisons to install CCTV cameras to deter human rights abuse. It also said that a similar facility should be provided for lockups if possible. The top court bench of Justice TS Thakur and Justice R Banumathi in their judgement said that CCTV cameras should be installed in the prisons within one year but not later than two years.

67. The Central Government has announcedthat foreign direct investment or FDI amounting to $1.31 million has been received in the defence sector in last three years (since 2012) and current year.

71. Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modilaunched the ‘Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana’ for power sector reforms in rural areas. The main aim is to ensure the proper electricity supply to farmers and rural households. The earlier scheme for rural electrification, Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), which was launched by previous UPA government, has been subsumed in the new scheme as its rural electrification component.

72. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis hasinaugurated the first of the six new Indian Institutes of Management in Nagpur. The proposal of setting up of six IIMs was made by Narendra Modi government last year. It is Maharashtra’s first IIM and is being mentored by IIM Ahmedabad. It will start its first batch with 60 students from a temporary campus in Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology.

73. The Election Commission of India hasremembered APJ Abdul Kalam as its first ‘national icon’ for voter awareness. The EC noted APJ championed the cause of greater participation and use of electronic means in holding of free and fair elections.

75. The Competition Commission of India(CCI) has imposed a fine of Rs 420 crore on the local unit of Hyundai Motor Co as it was engaged in anti-competitive practices. The CCI has notified Hyundai to deposit the penalty within 60 days from the order date.

1. Bangladesh and China have signed anagreement with respect to the construction of a 3.5-km tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong. The estimated cost of the project is $ 1 billion. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges signed the deal with China Communications Construction Company in Beijing, ministry spokesperson Abu Naser.

2. According to the report from WorldHealth Organization, Cuba has become the first country in the world to stamp out transmission of HIV and syphilis from a mother to her child. WHO defines “elimination” of transmission as “reduction of transmission to such a low level that it no longer constitutes a public health problem.” In 2013, only two babies were born with HIV and five with congenital syphilis.

3. The six world powers (the UK, China,France, Russia, the US and Germany) and Iran have come to an agreement to extend the nuclear deal on Tehran’s nuclear program until July 7 to allow more time for talks to reach a final deal. This decision was taken during the talks between these nations held in the Vienna, Austria after the deadline expired on 30 June 2015.

4. Scientists have identified two drugs forthe treatment of deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus. The name of the two promising drugs are-REGN3051 and REGN3048 which have shown ability to neutralise the MERS virus.

This research took place in collaboration with biopharmaceutical company Regeneron which is situated in New York.

5. The UN Human Rights body has adopted aresolution on addressing the human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. The resolution has condemned the systematic gross violations of rights and abuses committed against all, including Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State. It urges the Myanmar government to grant full citizenship rights to them.

6. India has abstained from voting on aresolution on Palestine adopted at the UN rights body that calls for accountability by parties involved in conflict in Gaza. Although India, Kenya, Ethiopia, Paraguay and Macedonia abstained, the resolution was adopted as 41 countries voted in its favour.

7. US secretary of defence Ash Carter metwith French defence minister Jean-Yves Le Drian at the Pentagon, to strengthen cooperation with the aim to fight against the Islamic State (IS). Carter commended France for its commitment in the fight to deliver a lasting defeat to IS. Earlier this year, France deployed its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Persian Gulf to support counter-IS airstrikes.

Warren Buffett, the third wealthiest manin the World, has donated about $2.84 billion of Berkshire Hathaway Inc stock to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities, as part of the billionaire’s plan to give away nearly all of his wealth. This is Buffett’s 10th annual donation and the largest, taking his total contributions to the charities to more than $21.5bn.

The Chinese navy has got a four-engine Gaoxin-6, anti-submarine aircraft developed and manufactured by Aviation Industry Corp of China. It has been delivered to the Beihai – or North Sea – Fleet of the People’s Liberation Army navy.

10. Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka inthe first week of July 2015 achieved Guinness World Records for spending most number of days in the space. He achieved this title by spending 804 days on the International Space Station (ISS). 16. ISRO has announced that, India’s first

indigenously designed and developed high-

thrust cryogenic rocket engine generating a

nominal thrust of 19 tonnes has been

successfully endurance hot-tested for 800

seconds. The engine will be used for

powering the Cryogenic stage (C25), the

upper stage of the next generation GSLV Mk-

III launch vehicle of ISRO, capable of

The planet, Kepler-452b, is about 1,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. It’s about 60% bigger than Earth. Researchers Kepler-452b’s atmosphere would probably be thicker than Earth’s, and it would have active volcanoes. It takes 385 days for the planet to orbit its star.

20. The world’s first malaria vaccine,Mosquirix has cleared one of the final hurdles as it received a positive scientific opinion from European regulators. The vaccine now awaits approval from the WHO before it could be administered within the next few years across Africa. The vaccine, named Mosquirix, gets regulatory nod by London-based European Medicines Agency after more than 30 years of research.
