Trust to Trust (T2T) School Support Fund
The Trust is committed to providing school improvement support to all of its partner schools
irrespective of their Ofsted grade or the nature of their particular challenges. The Trust Board has
recently agreed a new Trust to Trust school support fund of £50,000 that schools can apply to for
specific intervention support.
Trust partner schools can apply for a grant of up to £4,000, which must be match funded by the
school to pay for improvement interventions. A joint application must be submitted by the provider
of the intervention support and the recipient school. The rationale behind the support should be
clearly explained along with the nature and duration of the support and associated costs. Clearly
defined and agreed outcomes to be achieved must be provided as part of the application and a sub
group of the Trust Board has been established to consider and approve applications from schools.
To obtain an application form and further details please contact Samantha Gallilee
Apprenticeship Bursary
North Tyneside Learning Trust has supported employers in North Tyneside, including many Trust
Schools, to create over 100 new apprenticeships for young people. The Trust covers approximately
half the salary costs by providing a bursary of £3,550. Our apprentices have brought considerable
value to their place of work and have worked in a broad range of occupational areas,
including engineering, mechanics, business administration and ICT. All of our apprentices are aged
16-18 and have attended a Trust School. Many have already completed their apprenticeship and
have remained in employment which is a fantastic achievement. The Trust has agreed to continue
the bursary apprenticeship offer this year, with schools prioritised as employers in the first instance.
For more information about this please contact Craig Reid on 0191 643 6407 or

“Historically the North Tyneside Learning Trust had led a number of very successful programmes to strengthen STEM activity, and although this was valued by schools, many began asking the trust to explore how it might support other areas of the curriculum including the arts. Artsmark has provided a perfect platform to do this.” Kehri Ellis, Chief Executive, North Tyneside Learning Trust.

Mathematical Thinking and the new GCSE.
This Work Group offers teachers and their departments nationally coordinated support to address
the reasoning and problem-solving challenges of the mathematics curriculum and its assessment in
the new GCSE.
Many departments will be considering not only the long-term development of these skills across KS3
and into KS4, but also the immediate needs of current KS4 pupils facing the challenges of the new
GCSE. This Work Group aims to support both these aspects through professional development
activities focusing on practical and accessible classroom-based approaches.
Participation also offers the opportunity to develop departmental professional development
processes and produce longer-term improvement plans.

Reasoning and Visualisation
Reasoning is a key aim of the primary mathematics national curriculum and has been identified by
Ofsted as the least well-developed.
Some key aspects of reasoning are:
Identifying patterns, properties, relationships and structures in number, measures or shape
situations
Clarifying what is the same and what is different
Making decisions and deductions based on given information or particular situations
Exploring the mathematical structure of problems
Describing, interpreting and explaining what you see
Visualisation can support these aspects of reasoning and develop higher levels of thinking.
It can contribute to the CPA approach, linking external practical or pictorial representations to
internal models or visualisations that can be manipulated to support conceptual understanding.
Pupils need to be supported to develop these internal images and to share and discuss them with
others.
We are running a programme consisting of 2 x half day meetings, and a cap task which will consider:
· What is visualisation?
· How can it support reasoning?
· What sort of classroom activities provide opportunities for reasoning and visualisation?
· How to find out more?
We are running cohorts for both KS1 and KS2, both being delivered at The Dryden Centre,
Gateshead, starting in January. Information will be on our website on the next couple of weeks but
in the meantime if you would like to express an interest, please email [email protected]

Opportunities to acquire NCETM accreditation as a leader of maths professional development
The Maths Hubs Network needs to expand the pool of people with the skills and capacity to lead
maths-specific professional development activities for groups of teachers.
To that end, the NCETM, working with Maths Hubs, is seeking applications from teachers and others
with experience in maths teaching to take part in a programme this academic year, leading to the
nationally recognised designation of NCETM Accredited PD Lead.
There are three tailored versions of the programme: for those with primary, secondary, and A- level
experience. Each consists of three face-to-face days (two days in the 2018 spring term; one day in
the second half of the 2018 summer term) and a series of in-school and independent planning and
study tasks spread over the academic year. They are part of the Maths Hub Network’s strategy to
build up a group of Professional Development Leads who can support the work of hubs in every
school and college phase.
Full information and the application form can be found on our website. Closing date is 14th
November. http://www.greatnorthmathshub.co.uk/opportunities-to-acquire-ncetm-accreditation-

Supporting Lower Attaining SEN Pupils in Mathematics
There is a need for real and challenging maths experiences for SEND pupils, that allow teachers to
generate ‘talk for learning’ and develop reasoning and problem solving skills.
This programme provides a series of inclusive challenges, based on the original CAME (Cognitive
Acceleration Mathematics Education) materials, to develop thinking that underpins the key areas of
mathematical reasoning. The strategies complement a mastery approach to teaching and learning,
enabling all pupils to reach their potential in Mathematics.
This programme, consisting of lesson observations, resource sharing and gap tasks, will demonstrate
and develop pedagogy that supports SEN pupils to develop a deeper, more secure understanding of
topics, with greater retention.
Mainstream Schools – December 4th and March 12th at Churchill Community College.
Special Schools – December 5th, January 30th and March 9th at Beacon Hill School.

Today's Technology in the Primary Science Classroom
Technology doesn’t need to be scary. This course highlights how technology can enhance your
science lessons and develop your children’s ‘Working Scientifically’ skills, such as measuring,
observations, classifying and grouping, and recording, through the creative use of digital equipment.
Using data loggers, digital microscopes, iPads, and various apps, you will be introduced to methods
that develop creativity and excitement to your science lessons. Utilising technology helps children
access science in the classroom, and allows them to apply it to the world in which they live.
There will be cross-curricular links to Maths, English, and Computing explored during the session.
As a result of this course, you will be able to:
• Use technologies such as iPads, datalogging equipment and digital microscopes to develop your
children’s ‘Working Scientifically’ skills.
• Understand how apps can be used to enthuse your children and help them make connections
between science and their lives.
• Create exciting and relevant science lessons using alternative technologies with cross- curricular
links to other areas of the curriculum.
• Share alternative recording methods with your children so they can show what they have learnt
and the progress they have made.
