ChNPP current activity
Main activities at the stage of ChNPP units shutdown :
• units maintenance in safe state;
• decommissioning infrastructure construction;
• unloading of SNF – main activity determining the stage duration;

• Comprehensive engineering and radiation survey (CERS);

In 2008 SSE ChNPP operator provided adequately:
• safety of units 1, 2, 3, Interim Storage Facility - 1 and “Shelter” object;
• safe storage of spent nuclear fuel in ISF-1, reactor cooling ponds, safe management of ChNPP and Shelter object Radioactive Waste under conditions of observance of appropriate licenses, normative acts and IAEA safeguards being in force.
Radiation impact on personnel, public and environment did not exceed established dose limits of personnel and public, normative releases and effluents

Design lifetimes of units 1, 2 have been extended
● Units 1, 2 ageing management program has been developed;● Technical condition of units 1, 2 critical elements and their
remaining life have been assessed;● Safety evaluation reports for units 1, 2 have been developed;● Design lifetime for unit 1 has been extended till 09.2009.
Currently, the documents for extension of operation life till 2017 are being prepared;
● Design lifetime for unit 2 has been extended till 10.2018

In accordance with the SNRCU Collegium decision No 18 dated 26.06.2008 the License ЕО No 000859 dated 25.06.2008 was obtained to carry out activity at the stage of life cycle “operation of nuclear facility” Interim Storage Facility-1

“Implementation plan to improve Interim Storage Facility-1 safety” has been developed and is being carried out.To present day there have been performed the following activities:
• reinforcement of storage facility building structures;• installation of preventing shielding plate in the fuel receipt cooling pond

SNF unloading
05.12.2005 – the works commenced to unload Spent Nuclear Fuel from reactor cores of units 1, 3 and move them to Interim Storage Facility -1.January 2007 – Spent Nuclear Fuel were completely unloaded from reactor core of unit 1;April 2008 – Spent Nuclear Fuel were completely unloaded from reactor core of unit 3
Progress in ChNPP shutdown
At present:-There are no Spent Nuclear Fuels in the reactor cores of units 1, 2, 3-Spent nuclear fuels are only in the reactor cooling ponds-The works are underway to prepare movements of spent nuclear fuels from unit 3 cooling ponds-It was started manufacture of penals for Spent Nuclear Fuel Assemblies using own resources

● 317 systems and subsystems were decommissioned, that is about 60% of total amount of ChNPP equipment and piping;
● The units were released from potentially dangerous substances (combustible and hostile environment);
● Units 1, 2 reactors have been “finally shut down”;
● The works are underway to bring unit 3 reactor into state “Final shutdown”

Dismantling operations
In 2004 the activities started to dismantle reactor external equipment.
More than 1000 tons of heat-mechanic and electrotechnical equipment, pipes, metal structures have been dismantled for the whole period of works.
120 tons of metal have been decontaminated to the levels of unrestricted use

● Over the 1998 to 2005 period Comprehensive Engineer Radiation Survey was being carried out for units 1, 2, 3 and external facilities.
● Over the 2007 to 2009 period Comprehensive Engineer Radiation Survey for unit 1 was being updated.
● Amount of metal at units 1, 2, 3 was determined broken down by contamination categories

On 06.11.2008 State commission signed acceptance certificate to put into operation the facility of the completed construction within the framework of this project.
That allowed to provide the sufficient level of safety for the next 15 years and it is a necessary condition for the implementation of the New Safe Confinement construction project

In 2008 the works were performed to implement the project “Stabilization of the Shelter object building structures”.

Works on “Pioneer Wall” Berm removal were performed in 2008.
It has been removed about 23000 m3 of technological materials and 1 and 2 categories SRW .Deed of Work Acceptance was signed.

Local sealing (repair) of an easy roof is executed in 2008 that has allowed to reduce considerably ingress of atmospheric precipitation inside the Shelter object, to reduce Liquid Radioactive Waste volume and to improve building constructions conditions.

Excavations works necessary for northern and southern bands foundation ditches arrangement for future confinement assembly site are performing during this phase.
Works of the 2-nd phase of the first project stage on site preparation for New Safe Confinement construction are close to completion.

Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-2)
• Construction is carried out for Nuclear Safety Account funds;• The general contractor was "FRAMATOME“ company;• Since April 2003 construction is suspended because of
impossibility to license this facility due to significant safety deficiencies, the contract with "FRAMATOME" was terminated;
• Completion of ISF-2 Project will carry out Holtec International, USA. The contract agreement between SSE ChNPP and Holtec International has been signed in September 2007;
• Forecasted term of Interim Storage Facility - 2 commissioning is the middle of 2013.

Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management (ICSRM)
Lot 1 - Installation for solid waste retrieval from existing solid waste storage facilities;Lot 2 – Solid waste processing plant and temporary storage facility for Long Lived Waste and High Level Waste (84 Building);Lot 3 – Near-surface storage facility for low and intermedium short-lived RAW.

• Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant construction is carried for the Nuclear Safety Account funds;
• The general contractor is Consortium of companies with leading organization BELGATOM;

Chernobyl NPP Decommissioning Information Support System
Unified system of ChNPP decommissioning activity Management is under development at Chernobyl NPP.
Integrated ChNPP Units decommissioning schedule will be introduced on the basis of this system according to facilities breakdown and activity directions at the enterprise.
The system of coding of activity types, works and resources, with the subsequent costing in process of decommissioning will be introduced.
That will ensure a transparency of planning and centralized control of expenses.
