Design of Integrated Renewable Energy Source powered System for residential and industrial areas

An Italian company is looking for partners to establish cooperation in the area of sustainable energy development. The company would like to activate collaboration with an RES (Renewable Energy Source) technology producer to implement the most suitable size of requested equipments to realise an integrated RES-powered system for residential and industrial areas.

The development of the renewable sources of energy, significantly energetic and non polluting, is one of the main objectives of the world policies, which, in the context of sustainable development, have as a purpose the increase of safety in the energy supply, environment protection and the development at a commercial scale of commercialisable energy technologies. In this scenario an integrated system could give the opportunity to achieve the EU objectives in the energy sector, providing small and medium enterprises the opportunity to produce, assemble and commercialise an integrated technology package able to satisfy the energy requirements of medium groups of users, residential or commercial/industrial consumers, with up to 400-500 MWh/year with variable percentages of electric and

thermal requirements.Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:The requested integrated technology package will make

producers and potential users more competitive on the global market, thanks to the following advantages offered: " Semi-independent management of energy requirements.

" Energy costs reduction due to free renewable resources (solar energy wind power). " Compact design of the package.

The use of different enthalpy level of thermal energy in cascade thermodynamic processes will be relevant. Moreover, harnessing renewable energy has a positive environmental impact as it curbs emissions (reductions of about 0.83 kg of CO2/kWhe produced, of about 0.35 kg of CO2/kWht produced and of about 0.30 kg of CO2/kWhf produced). With the integration of an intelligent management system will be possible: " To switch on what is useful." To switch off immediately what is not useful, conveying the produced energy to the storage or to the current use. " To select the most useful working parameters.

It is also important to provide the integrated package with a monitoring head system, preferably a Decision Support System, able to: " Archive data on environmental conditions. " Optimise energy production, storage and use. " Archive data on energy consumption for each unit, (thus allowing) to share (the) costs.

Improved edge insulation for vacuum insulation panels (or other devices that require an effective thermal break)

A British SME, based in Wales, has developed a new way to form structural edges to vacuum insulation panels (or other devices that need a thermal break) that is not only light and strong but has significantly higher insulation properties than alternative designs. Partners are sought with the capability to apply the technology (technical input is available from the Welsh company) and manufacture existing or new products incorporating the design, under license.

This invention provides an edge insulation that reduces the losses from encapsulated insulating materials, such as vacuum insulating panels and any other device, component or part that requires a thermal break. The invention can provide an improvement at any temperature difference but it is particularly effective at elevated temperatures.

The inventor is a small company based in Wales, UK, specialising in thermo-dymamics and its applications in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Vacuum insulation panels comprising two walls with an evacuated chamber between them have many advantages. In particular, vacuum super insulation (VSI) panels provide good insulation for many applications. With good quality VSI panels, the only heat losses normally encountered are radiative and conductive losses. For smaller panels edge losses can be significant. For high temperature applications metal edges have to be used and insulation materials are difficult to encapsulate within the edge formation, so this increases the losses from the edge. Similarly, in order to be effective the edge material has to be as thin as possible and not create conductive paths between the exterior plates of the panel.

This invention improves the thermal performance of most VSI panels. It achieves this improvement by using a technique of origami which

increases the conductive length of the material between the hot and cold surfaces. A variation also incorporates thin layers of insulation sandwiched between each fold or bend in the material. This is achieved without increasing the thickness of the panel and also reduces any convective losses due to the lower average temperature of the edge. The temperature drops along the length of the sheet forming the edge piece between the hot and cold surfaces. The invention further enables the edge of such insulating materials to be able to withstand thermal expansion and additionally creates a structurally strong edge.

Preferred skin and edge materials include stainless steel for high temperature applications, but glass or plastics materials which can withstand the required conditions and are sufficiently gas impermeable are suitable.

Preferably the thin sheet of material is manipulated by bending, shaping or otherwise deforming. Alternatively production may involve extruding, moulding or casting to produce the thin sheet of material in the desired configuration.

A further problem of using any type of edge assembly is the sealing of the corners. The invention includes a corner portion and the manipulation of this can be accommodated using the same techniques of bending and folding as for the edge insulation piece.

Test results from a prototype are available on request.

It is believed that significant improvements can be made on the initial test results. Various fillers have been developed as well as suitable sealing techniques. Initial indications are that the latest test panels will have life spans in excess of 300 years, suggesting they could be used as external insulation for buildings as part of new designs for construction. The panels when construced are very light, having a typical density of about 300 kg/m3, and are very strong. They may have alternative applications where

light weight and strength are a key feature.Innovative Aspects:"The folded or rolled construction of the thin sheet that forms the edge component provides a much greater conductive length between the hot and cold surfaces than the actual dimension suggests, so panels do not need to be increased in thickness. "The invention includes a design for corner pieces also with high insulation

properties and, because the edge thickness is so small, corners of various shapes can be accommodated relatively easily. "Existing prototype panels made with stainless steel are very light, typically a

third of the density of water, and strong. "With the new filler materials being developed the panels can be considered

to be a complex composite with a metal exoskeleton incorporating nano-materials.

"The invention is particularly effective at high temperatures or where there are large temperature differentials between the hot and cold sides of the panel, especially where plastics would melt. "Heat losses from the edges of metal clad panels can be significant especially

for smaller panels and this invention reduces those losses substantially, with tests indicating insulation properties nearly 6 times as good as other metal clad designs. "The edge structure is both light and strong and offers alternatives to metal

as a structural component. This would indicate that applications in aircraft and boats may be feasible. "The panels, having a vacuum inside them, may be suitable for applications

in space, especially where their strength and low mass are a benefit. "The panels have very low thermal mass so they will heat up very quickly,

reducing production cycle times if used in oven and furnace applications.

Energy management software for buildings

A French SME offers a new software system enabling a complete management of the energies consumption and levels assessments of all

kind of energies (water, fuel, gaz, electrivity). That system is wireless, and can manage a whole building, such industries, public and tertiary buildings. The real-time detections of energy consumption enable an organisation to reach an efficient management of energies and therefore to conserve energy and save ressources.

Some modules are set up on the counting instruments, without any works or wiring required; then information is sent with radio technology at 868 Mhz, each hour. The data are on line and access is secure through an ASP (Application Service Provider) in a form of graphs and diagrams. That accurate follow-up of the consumption of each kind of energy enable the detection of any overconsumption and leakages of water. Some alerts icons can be programmed for e.g. a nightly consumption or a monthly threshold. The consultation and inventory of the data allow determining the energetic ratios according to specific enquiries (e.g.

Kwh/m2).Innovative Aspects:Neither wire nor civil engineering needed, independence from the energy suppliers, following of the system through a secure ASP. Detecting the leakages of water can, by itself, make the cost of the software

profitable. But another particular interest is the change of consumptions behaviors: the continuous follow-up of the energy consumptions with an hourly basis permitting an immediate corrective action.

Biological cleaning of ballast water

A Swedish company has developed a new energy efficient, biological, technology in order to provide a safe, energy and cost efficient method for biological cleaning of this water. The company wants to find cooperation partners developing similar applications within this area, and/or that has competences in order to help develop this product, ie the type of cooperation sought is commercial agreement with technical cooperation.

A Swedish company has developed a new safe, energy and cost efficient way of cleaning ballast water biologically. The technique can be used for all kinds of ships that carry ballast water. Studies conducted in several countries have shown that many species of bacteria, plants and animals can survive in viable form in ballast water and sediments on ships, even after voyages of several months. When the ballast water or sediment is discharged into a

port state s water, it can lead to the establishment of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens that are a threat to native human, animal and plant life and the marine environment.

Ballast water exchange at sea is one way to reduce the opportunities of fresh water or coastal species to be transferred with ballast water. Technical equipment for treating ballast water with, e.g., UV, ozone, free radicals and/or electrochemistry are being developed all over the world, but it will be some years before this equipment is widely available on the market. In addition, many of the techniques that are being developed use a lot of energy and/or chemicals which has a negative effect on the environment. The international convention 13/2 2004 states that all ships are obliged to clean their ballast water before 2016. This means that there will be a large market for this technology within the near future, and this new technique is

unique as it is biological and doesn t use chemicals. There are great advantages for shipping companies as this technique has no negative

environmental side effects.Innovative Aspects:The innovative aspects of this technique are that it is biological and uses very little energy to achieve a satisfactory result. It leaves no residues or bi products. This technology makes visits to ports shorter as the ballast water does not need to be

discharged in the port s facilities. Other advantages are that it lives up to today s high standards in terms of energy efficiency, environmental

friendliness and sustainability.

Circuit breakers & check flow for water networks

A French SME offers three new & complementary technologies to control the use of water. Its products are battery operated and analyse continuously the consumption of water - they can automatically cut-off the distribution in case of anomaly. The water consumptions are known, monitored and assessed in real time with unattended and wireless solutions. Commercial agreement with technical assistance and technical cooperation are sought with industries, institutions and water-technology suppliers.

The company has developed three complementary technologies with an algorithm system to cover all the needs and requirements of the process. The circuit breakers, successfully developed, can automatically cut-off the distribution in case of anomaly, small and big leakages, abnormal consumption, wastage, or breakage of pipe.

The three different and complementary techniques are the following:

- A very low consumption electronic board functioning with a lithium battery cell (around 10 years life time), that handles all the functionalities of the equipment. - A specific software with dedicated algorithms that monitors the water flow in real-time and can characterise abnormal consumptions and generate alarms and water cut-off. It offers a broad number of parameters, pre-alarm and alarms options and a management of personalized configurations.

- A dedicated, simple and open communication protocol, enabling continuous transmission of the data (instantaneous water flow, index, alarms, temperature&) for remote processing and follow-up by centralized

management systemsInnovative Aspects:The system decides to cut-off the water flow in case of anomaly: the blocking process occurs depending on the flow-rate/elapsed time ratio (choice of the alarm and blocking modes), and therefore permits to reduce the bills and save water resources.

Innovative and eco-friendly water filter

An innovative French SME has developed a new technology for water filtration, using electrically activated recycled glass granules as a substitute for sand. The technology is applicable to public health facilities (drinking water, swimming pools..) and also for wastewater treatment and industry. This new technology enables substantial water saving. Partners for commercial agreement with technical assistance and technical cooperation are sought.

Sand is the most common filtration medium for water treatment; it is (unfortunately) an excellent substrate for growth of bacteria and supports colonisation by both good and bad bacterial species. When substituted by recycled electrically activated glass granules, the filters become more efficient than before (smaller particles removed from water). The medium is chemically inert and easy to back flush, approx. 50% less water is used in cleaning the filter. It is also less likely to become contaminated by fats, lipids and biological growth. The water is therefore clearer and of better

quality.Innovative Aspects:The manufacturing of the medium is certified ISO 9001 and approved by the European directive 98/83/CE facilitating easy compliance with environmental regulations. Changing filter sand for activated recycled glass results in major improvements in performance of filtration systems: self sterilising & clean, removal of smaller particles from water, less contamination.

Review and assessment of a model - local and regional energy planning tool

A Slovakian institution active in the energy sector has participated in join projects with a result - a software tool developed as a dedicated local and regional energy planning tool. It provides a simple and user-friendly planning tool for local governments. They are looking for partners for information exchange and training.

Strategic Assessment Framework for the Implementation of Rational Energy is an engineering-economic bottom-up model, designed for assessment of

first-order impacts of rational (i.e. renewable and new non-renewable) energy technologies on a national, regional or local level against a background of different policy instruments and scenario assumptions. It is a framework that consists of a database and a computer model that provides decision makers with a tool to evaluate the markets and impact of new energy technologies and policies. With the focus on sustainable development, significant EU and national funds are given to energy programmes, with energy planning becoming more decentralised across Europe. However, local participation in project development may be ineffective due to deficient understanding of energy options and potential lack of communication between developers and authorities. Avoiding or delaying project realisation thus hinders the widespread development of sustainable energy in Europe. Taking into account previous experience, the new version of the SAFIRE-LP model has been developed. It is developed as a dedicated local and regional energy planning tool. It is providing a simple and user-friendly planning tool for local government. A spatial planning element is being integrated, while focusing on the non-energy costs and benefits of the energy process by addressing the needs and concerns of the user. The new version has been translated and tested in municipalities in Lithuania, the Slovak Republic & Slovenia (European Commission, 2002-2004).

Valuable feedback was received through the implementation and monitoring of the Tradable Green Certificates (ASCerT) approach in five countries, namely Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Romania. These case studies also led to important conclusions including the need for harmonisation of national green certificate systems before integration of Accession Countries. Additionally, it was shown that the emergence of regional green certificate markets or bilateral reciprocity arrangements between countries could enhance the prospects for international trade.

It was partly funded under the EC's Fifth Framework Programme.Innovative Aspects:Software was installed in selected cities.

Required data were entered and analysed. Simulated scenarios confirmed initial expectations. Significant potential for CHP (Combined Heat and

Power) units installation and solar as well as geothermal energy utilisation was identified. Proposed scenarios were focused on utilisation of renewable energy sources in domestic and commercial sectors for domestic heating systems preparation. Project potential (geothermal source) was identified in open-air swimming pools as well. The software tool offers user-friendly, transparent, and cost-effective sustainable energy planning at regional level. It is overcoming some of these problems and barriers. Its exploitation and application in Slovakia had direct influence on renewable energy sources utilisation in regions and on energy import. Synergy effects were reduction of CO2 emissions, employment increase as well as others social benefits. Standardisations of planning process and rising of awareness were very important.

Light flow control for high pressure street lamps

An Italian company has developed a system that monitors and controls the light flow for high pressure street lamps. The system allows saving electric energy and facilitates the maintenance procedure noticing system faults and signalling them to the maintenance operator. The company is interested in finding a partner to integrate the system inside other devices. Industry is sought for a commercial agreement with technical assistance.

A small Italian company since the second half of 1990 is operative in the communication field and due to the activity of design and research of innovative elements; the company has adopted plants for the production of

devices using the Surface Mounting Technology SMT, with low and competitive prices on the national market. The company has developed a system that monitors and controls the light flow for high pressure street lamps. It saves electrical energy and makes easier the maintenance of electrical plants signalling eventual faults to the responsible operator. The technology is constituted by a sensor of current, a sensor of brightness and telecommunication equipment with a standard 802.15.4 that creates a meshed network of analogous devices. The systems currently in use set the whole power supply line of the lamps without considering the state of the single lamp. The proposed system allows a regulation of the power absorbed by the single lamps through an action of linear reduction of the supply tension according to cycles that can be programmed in value and in time and depending on the estimated traffic flows or on external control signal. Besides, data produced by the single nodes are delivered toward a GSM concentrator for collecting and analysing them. An alert can also be given for eventual faults from acquiring nodes. It is possible, from a local interface of the concentrator or through a GSM connection: - to schedule the beginning of the process of control of every points;- to start continuously monitoring the lighting state from a scheduled time;- to start continuously monitoring the anomalies in single elements that will

be signalled in real time to a supervisor.Innovative Aspects:The proposed system is innovative with regard to the modular structure and the possibility to control every single point in the plant. The system allows:- To set the plant according to the foreseen traffic flows or to an external signal of control.- To save energy up to 40% with positive environmental effects.- To be installed in existing plants without additional work, also with lamps of different kinds.- To do at the right time the maintenance without carrying out a reconnaissance of plants.- To have a uniform flow of light over the roadway increasing safety and comfort.

Heating costs allocation and mean temperature measuring technology (Integrating Thermometers)

A Slovak SME has developed a unique non-electronic technology for measuring of mean time-integral temperature during several hours up to years optionally by the temperature range and measurement duration. Technology can be used in interior applications as heating costs allocation technique or temperature balancing/observation in buildings as well as in exterior for measurements in meteorology, gardening, agriculture and forestry. Partners are sought for the development of further applications.

A basic equipment of the technology is an innovative integrating thermometer working on the base of a diffusive evaporation of a liquid filling through a capillary. The filling is exchangeable and optional by the temperature range and measurement duration requested. Mainly for interior applications preferable water filling is used. The apparatus is equipped with a unique reading bar for mean temperature viewing at any time during the measurement. Final evaluation can be carried out very precisely by weighting, or quickly, by a volumetric (filling column height decrease), or also, by a colorimetric method. The measurement duration with one filling can be from hours to year(s) without any maintenance and power needs. After refilling a new measurement is available immediately. The equipment can be equipped also with a classic thermometer for actual temperature viewing/measuring. The technology can be used in the following interior and exterior applications:" Heating costs allocation in residences and working areas" Temperature situation in buildings, manufacture and agriculture spaces/locations, forests, in gardening, etc." Environment and meteorology mean temperature observations in remote areas" Temperature investigation in areas/locations before and during planned activities, e.g. construction of health centers, buildings, storage areas, horticulture plants, etc. The water-filled integration thermometers are usable directly as the heating costs allocators for radiator heating systems. The allocation of heating costs is calculated from the mean temperature values of the radiators and to compare it with the real heating regime. In addition, the temperature is well-known physical value which is also sensible for people and there are not need additional calculations to roughly estimate the heating regime. The integrating thermometer phials can replace classic evaporation tubes and it

enables to reuse casings of classic evaporation allocators. Beside that, the phial is also possible to use as the classic evaporation tube in mode of a comparative allocator when heat emission for a given radiator body is correlated with amount of the evaporated filling. Presently the water filled integrating thermometer for temperature range 10 to 80°C is available. The proposer has the necessary know-how and equipment for production, using and further development of the

The end users are Power companies and subcontractors, which are allowed to work with HV-equipment. This technology is new and is based on an entirely new concept. By the company's calculations, it would prevent from up to 70% of unscheduled power failures. The research had received positive feedbacks from both academy (Technion, Israel institute of technology) and professionals (Israel electric company - IEC). The company has also a letter of intent from

IEC.Innovative Aspects:Innovative aspects of the offer:New method of protection of the HV power lines and substations from switching & lightening overvoltages. Main advantages of the offer: The method is:

1. Cost-effective reduces cost of maintenance by 65-70 % (the current 1 million euro per 100 km of HV lines is reduced by 65-70 %).

2. Quick and energy efficient battery charger

A Spanish SME has developed an innovative fast battery charger for the automotive and transport sector that reduces the charging time to one third when compared to a conventional charger.

This charger produces a current intensity much flatter and less curled than the conventional ones, so the charging process is very efficient without excessive heat production and without durability reduction. The company is looking for partners to establish a license agreement.

The charging process with the new battery provides a high yield, being carried out at a high speed.

Depending on its power, the charger brings the highest intensity, which is around one third of the battery ´s capacity, according to the battery ´s temperature.

This charger uses all the voltage as charging voltage, so controlling the voltage in the battery terminals prevents overload.

The main characteristic of the charger is that it reduces the charging time to one third in comparison to a conventional one, what means that the waiting time is significantly reduced. This fast charger charges in three hours a battery, which would require nine hours with a conventional charger, including the charge of equalization of the vessels of the battery.

Besides reducing the charging time, the device produces a flatter and less curled current intensity than the usual chargers, what involves a longer working life.

Considering the above-explained characteristics of the charger it can be deducted that the charging process takes place in a very efficient way without producing excessive heat in the battery, which could reduce its durability.

The battery charger can be adapted for all battery types and depending on this its technical characteristics such as input voltage, frequency, dimension, weight, etc, may vary.

Several essays were carried out in order to compare the new charger with a conventional one.

Two identical batteries were connected to both chargers giving the following results:

- The charging time using the new charger is 3.5 hours while using the conventional one takes 7.2 hours.

- Both batteries remain in good conditions and the ageing is similar for both after a number of cycles.

The new charger presents a lower content of harmonics for all the currents, even at maximum intensity. The harmonic distortion rate is 9.26 % for the new charger and 29.8 % for the reference one.

Both chargers have similar yield.

Further, this charger has an information storage system, which allows

Sustainability indicators for renewable energy plants

A spin off company born from an Italian University, specialised in environmental monitoring and air quality management, has recently extended its focus to the energy field and has developed a decision support system to assess and compare the sustainability of plants producing energy from various renewable sources. The company is interested in technical cooperation or commercial agreements with industrial partners or local administrations that can take benefit from the system.

In the actual need of energetic planning, the possibility to carry out an ex-ante-evaluation of the technologies available for energy production assumes a particular importance to support a coherent analysis of the possible energetic choices that present an elevated complexity for the territory.

The possible assessment techniques vary from an emergetic analysis to a life cycle assessment or an Ecological Footprint Analysis depending on the technology used.

Emergy expresses the cost of a process or a product in solar energy equivalents. The basic idea is that solar energy is our ultimate energy source and by expressing the value of products in emergy units, it becomes possible to compare different technologies.

Emergy accounting is a global method of accounting concerned with the input of solar energy equity at the global level. The emergy accounting methodology seeks to account for the energy used in developing energy of higher quality, which are capable of controlling ecosystem and economic functions. A life cycle analysis is the assessment of the environmental impact of a given product or service throughout its lifespan. The pollution caused by usage is also part of the analysis.

For a hydro electric power plant, for example, construction pollution must be considered in term of CO2 no longer absorbed by biomass, since the biomass has been submergeed from the dam. This biomass decay is called "CO2 equivalent".The Ecological Footprint Analysis (EFA) is an environmental analysis methodology for the estimation of the weight of the man on the natural systems, through the calculation of two specific indicators: the Ecological Print and the Biocapacity.

The Ecological Print is able to estimate the anthropic cargo on the territory generated from an individual, starting from life style and from the consumption of resources and ecological services, whereas the Biocapacity measures the potentiality of the territory to supply such resources and services.

This methodology is therefore able to take into account the difference that elapses between the historical times of the human consumption of resources and production of refusals and the biological times of the Nature, that is the ability of the biosphere to produce resources and to absorb waste and refusals.

The above methods have been applied by an Italian spin-off to compare the sustainability of several energy production technologies, both at a global and local level. A decision support system has been developed for industries or local administrations that have to make decisions about the strategies of energy policy.

Today s state of the art of heat control systems for houses and buildings often employ a mix of different technologies: passive radiator thermostats acting on flow control, on/off thermostats and timers, water temperature modulation at the furnace based on outer and/or inner ambient temperatures, water pump flow modulation, zone sectioning, etc.

These systems each one good and effective in its own may be difficult to be set together in the best cooperative conditions. The final result can be sub-optimal in terms of energy consumption and comfort.

In addition none of the existing systems allows clear, easy and highly configurable settings of the desired parameters, in particular space and time. This feature is somehow underestimated, since normal house life ends up in using different rooms at different times along each day of the week.Even more most of the current systems only allow switch-off of the heating through a main central thermostat/timer, thus not achieving the desired energy savings. Other systems set and regulate the temperature of the house as a whole, not distinguishing between room and room. Passive

thermostats can overcome such limitation but don t allow for timed temperature controls.

The present technology will enable the user to pre-set the temperatures and a key feature - the distribution of the heating energy on each room. This leads to a more effective use of the produced heat along with a better comfort on an extended (24 hours) time span and finally a reduced running costs for heating.

Current and potential domains of applications are:

1 - Homes, small offices, etc., with high energy bill requiring light modifications and a simple approach to the problem of energy saving by means of smarters solutions not merely based on the simple (yet not

efficient) classic temperature only approach;

2 - Companies which need to spread new services for packetised heat supplies managed with energy saving systems so exploiting at best the

amount of the total saving realised by the user.Innovative Aspects:The system is based on an electronic control unit acting on the radiators and/or on other heating sources present in the house. The control unit communicates with - and is managed by - a portable wireless unit. The user can act on this portable unit with time/space controls of the heat distribution for every single room of the house. The graphical easy and fast patented interface allows for a true improvement over the present systems,

giving the immediate feeling of keeping the heating under control.

Through this better hand-held interface and its ability to perform finer adjustments (compared to other solutions on the market) the users can rapidly and clearly tune the heating according to their particular needs, so finally achieving an amount of energy savings higher than the one attainable by other more rough or cumbersome controls. This is particularly

true for large estates with many independent rooms.

1 - Cheap solution with very high returns in terms of energy savings and cutted bills for the user.

2 - Large potential market for installation in old and new houses.

3 - The system can be fitted into an existing heating plant with very little adaptation. The main intervention has to be done on the distribution manifold, so fitting is possible not only on very old systems (with welded derivations) or on single-pipe distributions for which a different cabling approach is required. Usually the work can be done in a few hours (typically 5-7) by a skilled technician. Technical training is simple (e.g. through an instructional DVD or VHS) and may be easily done even on site, just during installation so providing a reliable, fast and cost effective solution with a very high ROI.

The unit is cheap, easy to install and set up, very friendly to use and doesn t need periodical maintenance.

Ten prototype units were already mounted and tested in different homes. In all the cases the real average energy savings attained during the testing phase was among 40 -50 % of the consumption before installation.

Energy Recovery from small hydraulic sources using pumps as turbines

A research group of a Southern Italy University has developed a new system for recovering energy from small hydraulic sources using pumps as turbines in order to contribute to promote renewable energy. The group is looking for partners for technical cooperation, commercial agreement with technical assistance.

A research group of a Southern Italy University has developed a new system that allows small hydraulic pumps to work as turbines in order to recover energy. In the discussion of the energy situation in developing countries and especially in rural areas, it is generally recognised that small hydropower may play a significant role. However, high initial investment costs of small hydropower plants have restricted rapid development of this energy potential in many countries. The use of standard pumps as turbines (PAT) may often be an alternative with a considerable economic advantage and might therefore contribute to a broader application of micro-hydropower.

Pumps operate in turbine mode by changing direction of flow and hence the direction of rotation of the impeller. The flow pattern through the machine is similar to the flow conditions in a turbine. Thus, the advantageous features of turbines (i.e. accelerated flow and operating conditions which are less subjected to cavitations) also occur. The group has long term experience in developing solutions to chose the specific turbine for different types of sites. It should also supports users/companies in improve their capacity to choice the best

solution.Innovative Aspects:The possibility to recover energy from small hydraulic sources can represent an important contribute to promote renewable energy. Usually, hydraulic energy plants working in small scale have specific problems that interfere with their development. For this

reason, the turbines are high-cost products and need constant maintenance services.

The new solution overtakes these problems using pumps as turbines. Pumps are mass-produced and have the following innovative aspects compared with turbines:

" Integral pump and motor can be used as a turbine and generator set;" Available for a range of heads and flows:" Available in a number of standard sizes;" Short delivery time;" Spare parts such as seals and bearings are easily available;" Easy installation.

Research in the field of energy efficiency in data centers

The Energy-division of a German Research and Development Institute for Information Technology Tools and Systems specializes in intelligent system management solutions to increase the energy efficiency in data centres by improving the utilization of the server hardware. Partners for research and technical cooperation in field of energy-efficient data centers are sought.

The under-utilization of server systems offers huge potential for optimization with regards to performance and power consumption.

The Energy-division of a German Research and Development Institute develops algorithms for analysis and prediction of the behaviour of virtual servers for dynamically planning and assessing better distribution of the virtual servers onto the hardware.

Such solutions must be evaluated against their applicability in data centers before the concepts can be implemented in commercial products to be used in data centers.

Virtualization technologies allow the operation of several applications on one powerful hardware resource and hence increasingly find their way into data centers with the objective to raise the utilization and therewith the energy efficiency.

Due to a diverse behaviour in the work load, optimizations with this technology are limited since sufficient computing power has to be available during times of high work loads, which causes for a waste of energy during times of low work loads.

Dynamic virtualization solutions, which dynamically adapt the distribution of the virtual servers to hardware resources, depending on the current demand, offer therefore an extra saving potential.

In the development of such dynamic solutions for the usage inside, as well as across data centers' boundaries, algorithms for an analysis and prediction of the behaviour of the servers, for dynamic planning and assessment of the calculated solutions have to be researched and evaluated against their applicability in data centers. The attained knowledge and worked out concepts have to be implemented afterwards in commercial products that then can be directly used in the data centers.

This challenge is being addressed by the Institute through initial research projects. Further projects in close collaboration with suitable industrial partners are intended under direct subcontract or under the umbrella of

European (e.g. FP7) or national funding (German BMBF/BMWi).Innovative Aspects:Intelligent system management solutions as described above

significantly increase the energy efficiency in data centers by improving the utilization of the server hardware.

A reduction of energy demand by 50% would drastically reduce the operating costs for data centers, where today power costs already account for 33% of the budget. Eventually, the reduction in power consumption will positively contribute to the climate by reducing CO2 emmission.

Process optimization tools for machinery and process industries

A Finnish SME offers simulation and modelling expertise and tools for the optimization of industrial processes. Advantages of the tool are e.g. increased energy and cost efficiency and improved manufacturing quality. Partners interested in improving process cost efficiency and throughput are sought for commercial and technical cooperation. The tools are offered for paper & pulp, bioenergy and food manufacturing industries as well as equipment manufacturers for the mentioned industries.

The offered technology is based on computer aided simulation of the process or manufacturing line. Process simulation is widely used to design, develop and optimize e.g. chemical plant operations. Process simulation software exists for a range of different industries, and generally uses simple reaction models to describe unit process operations. The innovation in this offer is twofold: 1) General framework and physical modeling of unit processes and 2) automatic production optimization.

The process simulation is divided in separate modules that provide accurate prediction of unit processes. The simulation modules available for tailoring include:- Mechanical processes: screening, refining, crushing, mechanical pressing, formation- Mass and heat transfer: conduction, evaporation, condensation, radiation, diffusion, drying, adsorption, freezing- Noise and vibration - Fluid dynamics: mixing, dilution, filtration, burning

Also process automation and dynamics and production costs have their own modules- Process automation: PID controls, model predictive control- Process dynamics: flow latencies, chemical latencies, retention- Cost -effectiveness: the costs in different unit processes are taken into account. The costs consist of raw materials, energy, chemicals, machinery wear, and tradeoffs between different uses of energy

These modules can be either derived from measurement data or physical models describing the actual process phenomena. The modules are combined together to dynamically simulate the production process and the simulation accuracy can be compared to the actual production process.

The different ways to optimize production with physical simulation and automatic optimization are numerous. On the other hand, by precise physical simulation of a single part of the process, the process control parameters in one part can be optimized. However, sometimes even greater benefits can be achieved by simulating the whole process from start to end. Automatic optimization can find ways to compensate for production quality degradation caused by changes in one stage of the process by running the process in a different way in another stage. This can give new insights into

the development of the total process.Innovative Aspects:The physical modelling of unit processes allows for more accurate simulations than simulators based on measurement data only. For example, drying or heating processes can be simulated with high precision to "see" how the moisture and temperature change inside the product during processing. The moisture and temperature distribution inside the product may have drastic effects on the product end quality or the stability of the process. The accurate simulation gives more insight to determine the optimal production control. The precise simulations can be performed also for other processes as specified earlier.

The second main innovation of the offer is the automatic production optimization. Instead of trying different ways to control the process by a lengthy trial-and-error, the simulator framework can search optimal operation parameters when the desired design goals are given. The design goals often consist of keeping the product properties within the

specifications and minimizing cost the cost often consisting of energy expenditure, raw materials, additive chemicals, or production time and capacity.

Advantages:Using precise physical simulation modules and automatic optimization gives a number of benefits:1. Optimization of production: - cost savings in terms of saving raw materials, energy, chemicals - maximizing production output- improving the production quality2. Testing and development of new innovations3. Investment planning4. Trouble shooting production process anomalies and simulating what-if scenarios5. Process operator training

Energy saving technology for regulating alternating voltage in three-phase power supply networks

A Russian company has developed a novel energy saving multistage alternating voltage regulator. The regulator operates with much better technical, cost and performance parameters than the existing standard equipment used industrially nowadays. Versatility of the device provides for a wide range of applications. The device is protected by a Russian patent. Pilot production is set up. The company seeks partners for a joint venture agreement.

The energy saving multistage alternating voltage regulator is based on a novel internal switching scheme. It is possible to build in the regulator to industrial power supply equipment. Presently, each type of electric load requires a specific technology to stabilize and regulate the voltage. The offered technology allows using a single method for different networks and purposes including energy saving regulating of voltage for end-users, regulating of voltage without switching for equipment with strict requirements to voltage regulation, for instance, for precision machines and machines with computer-aided numerical control. The authors propose to set up a company to manufacture the multistage alternating voltage regulators in order to integrate the technology with all applications where three-phase power supply systems are used. The "pro"s are the low cost and

a short pay-back period (6 to 12 months).Innovative Aspects:- The technology is based on novel system of switching, commutating and connecting a stabiliser to a circuit or grid.- The technology allows using a single solution for different circuits and purposes including:(a) application for reduction and stabilisation of voltage for end-users;(b) application for increase of voltage for installations requiring a high accuracy of voltage - for instance, for high precision processing machines.- A possibility to regulate voltage within a narrow voltage range with simultaneous reduction of loss; - The technology reduces electric loss on the stabiliser.- Novel sensor of power and voltage coupled with standard registration devices.

- The factor of power transfer from main network to a load by electromagnetic field is 1:15, whereas standard solutions provide 1:2. Therefore, the installed power of autotransformer should be no less than a half of power of a load. It means that the new technology allows to cut down the power, dimensions and cost of autotransformer at least by 1.5-2 times.- The power consumed by a load can vary between 0 and 100% without affecting the quality of regulation.- High performance of a stabilizer. For instance, switching time is less than 20 ms.- Low weight, small dimensions and low cost of equipment. - Increase in the efficiency coefficient to 99.60%, as compared to 96.00% of standard stabilizers.- Reliable protection of distribution networks.- Much simpler control system based on simple commutation, use of standard microchips and novel sensors. - Simpler design due to elimination of complicated thyristor circuits.- Elimination of complicated filter used in standard solutions to cut higher harmonics of voltage which are built by standard equipment.- Elimination of distortions in circuits.- An opportunity to make commutation at currents several times less than in distribution network. This is done without breaking up the circuit.- An opportunity to use single technical solution for different operations:

Technology for production of fuel and heat from biomass

A large company from south Poland which deals with cultural activity, such as running a historical village, a number of exhibitions and an amusement park, is looking for a technology which would allow for the production of fuel (biogas or solid fuel)and heat from biomass. The company is interested in signing a commercial contract inclusive of technical support.

The functioning of the enterprise is based, among other things, on activities concentrated around the maintenance of greenery on large areas (22 hectares). The type of area may be classified as partly forested, partly recreational parkland intended for the purpose. This type of activity generates large amounts of organic refuse, such as: wood from a pre-planned deforestation, broken tree boughs, branches, grass and other green waste material. This waste is in no way developed and it generates costs connected with utilisation. There is a possibility of planting willow trees on part of the plot. The tree could be one of the materials used in the production of fuel. The company also possesses a complex of buildings which need heating during the winter period, so it could use biomass as a fuel for the production of heat for heating of buildings. The technology sought envisages two options of organic wastes facilitation:

1.The possibility of biogas production. In this case, a chamber for the production of biogas would be necessary, alongside vessels for gas storage

sufficient to heat approximately 1,000 m2 of buildings all housing workshops and a biogas furnace.

2.The possibility of producing solid fuel biomass blocks. In this case, the preferred technology should include the following elements: a biomass

block production line, a biomass block storage facility sufficient for the heating needs of the premises in winter. In order to burn the produced fuel, there will be a need for an appropriate furnace, which may also be equipped with a self-loading function in the form of a special loading

tool.Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:Both these technologies should provide for the production of fuel which could be stored for at least a few months and used for the purpose of heating company premises. The company does not specify the form of fuel, therefore the technology may be either based on solid as well as liquid fuel, including an integrated boiler room built for the purpose of using the afore-mentioned fuel.The technology should be proven in practise and reliable.Advantages:- Effective and energy-saving;- Safe for people and for the environment;

An additional product with ionic effect used to improve lubrification

A French company offers an additional product used as an ester lubricant with a ionic technology to reduce the friction and the contact between

different metals. The product is used for gearboxes, turbines, compressors, chains, bearings... allowing the reduction of vibration, temperature, energy consumption and extend the shelf life of the equipment.Partners such as manufacturers of equipments, research laboratories and research and development (R&D) are sought.

A French company offers an innovative product with a technological by ionic effect.

The use of ester lubricants in speciality applications is well known. What makes this synthetic ester lubricant different is its unique molecular structure.

Utilising molecular modelling techniques, idealised ester-based chemical structures containing multi-functional groups, have been designed and then synthesised. The resultant highly polarised polymeric fluids have excellent load bearing and anti-wear characteristics without the need for potentially damaging additional chemical additives.

These synthetic oils, which are negatively charged, are literally attracted to metal surfaces, which are inherently positively charged, to give the boundary ion effect. This results in a mono-molecular layer of lubricant being electronically bound to the metal surface, thus preventing metal to metal contact.

By contrast, conventional lubricants shear and break down on a regular basis resulting in metal to metal contact. This causes friction resulting in wear, high temperatures and increased energy consumption.

Using this new product allows : Energy cost reduction,Reduction of CO2 gases,Noise and vibration reduction,Temperature reduction,Wear reduction,Better performance of equipments and reduction of maintenance costs.

The product can so be used in the following equipments:Gearboxes,Turbines,Blower fans,Extruders,Centrifuges,Gear guides,Planer bearings,

Booms...Innovative Aspects:The ionic effect of the technology allows to protect the metal when it is submitted to heavy loads increasing the

lubrification performance. The product doesn t contain any solid compound allowing safe usage in any equipment.

An original integrated and monitored system for energy savings in street lighting, intended for small towns

A small Romanian company specialised in electronic and lighting systems has developed and offers an original integrated and monitored system for energy savings in street lighting, intended for small towns (80,000 habitants). Main advantage: the economy realised with such a system is about 185,000 Euro/year. The company is looking for partners to develop the system by technical cooperation or for license, but also end users for commercial agreements with technical assistance.

The mentioned system has two components: * The use of economical electronic ballasts (with dimming feature) for high-pressure sodium lamps 150W/250W. * Remote control and feedback solution. Economical electronic ballast: By using a classical ballast (core & coil) with a high-pressure sodium lamp the energy consumption decreases from 280W to 220W/hour for the same lighting effect; by using an electronic ballast the energy saving is 60W/hour (the energy consumption decreases from 250W to 190W); the economical electronic ballast has a dimming feature: after midnight, when the traffic is reduced, for 80% of lighting effect the energy saving is about another 30W/hour, which means a consumption of 160W/hour for a high-pressure sodium lamp of 250W. Total energy savings/lighting fixture/hour = 130W.

*Remote control and feedback solution is composed of: - One to 75 intelligent units for command and control of 80 street lighting fixtures. - The central controller for the street lights composed of 2 computers C1, C2 connected in parallel (each one is back-up for the other one), having a dedicated software application. - A GSM terminal for sending and receiving signals between central controller and intelligent units.

- The local Intelligent Unit is designed to command and control 1 to 80 electronic ballasts 150W/250W for high-pressure sodium lamps in lighting fixtures. It receives commands from the central controller to start/stop/dim the light from 1 to 80 street lighting fixtures equipped with electronic ballasts 150W/250 W for sodium bulbs. The intelligent local unit can send back information to central controller regarding the state of the line,

meaning that on street X the light is on/off/dim. The local intelligent unit transmits to central controller also the followings: executed command, power voltage on every phase, the charge of the phase, energy consumption on each phase, and power factor.

- The central controller for the streetlights is composed of 2 computers connected in parallel (each one is back-up for the other one), and have a dedicated software application. The software shows the map of the city street by street; the level of illumination for each street start/ stop/ dim can be selected in a manual/automated way, as well as time schedule programming.

- The central controller has a GSM terminal for sending and receiving signals between central controller and intelligent units. Only the cellular phone numbers recognised by the system can command and control the

street lights by sending simple codes (by SMS) meaning open, close, dim and read the state of the line. By using the available GSM network, it is a remote system of high fidelity and reliability with minimum

costs.Innovative Aspects:· It doesn t consume reactive energy · Power factor > 0.99

Technology to hydrogen production from sea water

A Catalan SME based in Spain has developed and patented a new system to produce hydrogen from plasma pure water using microwaves. The advantage of the system is to use any kind of water including sea water to obtain the hydrogen. The company is looking for a license agreement or a technical cooperation.

The electrolysis of low temperature plasma pure water is carried out from steam water subjected to microwave scalar electric fields. The steam water would be obtained evaporating water in special containers by means of microwave vector electric fields generated in directional antennas placed on the upper faces (similar to a microwave oven) of the container. The plasma generator would be an octahedral container emitting microwaves radiation over steam and creating microwave scalar electric fields.

Because this technology needs high power microwaves generators, expertise in this area would be necessary. The hydrogen could be used to automation, to storage of energy, industrial applications and also it could be transported far away from water sources in order to produce water in dry areas and recovering one part of energy. Theoretical foundations of the technology:

Microwave scalar electric fields, repowering longitudinallangmuir waves inside plasmas. The stability of plasmas depends of geometry shapes of containers, nature of electrodes and other causes. All these optimal conditions have been the

core of the current innovation.Innovative Aspects:Sea water is just the unique abundant source of water in many countries. Therefore this technology can contribute to develop applications of hydrogen in the industry and agriculture at different places. Solar energy can be used to reduce the cost of the steam generation and profit to produce hydrogen near of big solar generation systems (reducing about the 15 % of the energy cost)The system works with low temperature steam and stability of plasma water is accomplished; that means a low-priced process.

The main innovative advantages can be described as follows:- Application of microwave scalar electric fields to obtain hydrogen- New kind of hydrogen generator- Quick and high quantity of hydrogen production- To transform energy to hydrogen and/or water at low price

Heat pipes for efficient cooling

A London-based university has developed a cooling system based on heat pipes, offering heat transport at rates increased by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional systems. The university is looking for companies in microelectronics manufacture or dehumidification and ventilation for joint development and/or funding of further research projects.

Heat Pipes are hermetically sealed tubes containing a working fluid in both the liquid and vapour phases and a wick. They work by utilising the highly efficient thermal transport processes of evaporation and condensation to transport heat from one end to the other where the heat can be dissipated through a heat sink. The amount of heat that can be transported by these devices is normally several orders of magnitude greater than pure conduction through a solid metal. Heat pipes can use gravitational force (wickless pipes) or capillary forces (wicked pipes). The wicked pipes can be used in any orientation, widening the scope of their

applications.Innovative Aspects:The system increases the efficiency of heat transfer compared to conventional systems, increasing efficiency of the thermal management in small systems. This allows easier implementation in microelectronics.

The use of a looped heat pipe can integrate the cooling and heating stage of air dehumidifiers, simplifying the construction and saving expenses and emissions on reheating the dried air. Savings in energy can repay installation costs within 1 year.

Multiple-objective modelling of fuel cell efficiency

A London-based university has developed a model to optimise polyelectrolyte membrane fuel cells. The model identifies design trade offs, maximising the efficiency of the resulting fuel cell. The university is looking for manufacturers of fuel cells to implement the model's designs. The university is also looking for partners to evaluate the model and identify key requirements in areas that are not yet addressed.

A London-based university has developed a model to describe the design of polyelectrolyte membrane fuel cells. Using a multi-objective approach, the model optimises the design of the fuel cell for multiple parameters, including efficiency and size. This identifies trade offs in the design of the fuel cell, allowing a rational choice of designs for specific applications and situations. The model can be adapted to other types of fuel cells and to

evaluate other parameters affecting the efficiency of the cells.Innovative Aspects:The described model is not only detailed (and therefore captures

the physical behaviour one would expect and require) but is also suitable for use by rigorous optimisation methods. This means that appropriate and commercially available off-the-shelf global optimisation solvers can be used to obtain guaranteed optimal solutions. Being able to look at multiple objectives simultaneously, with a guarantee on optimality, gives the design engineer a clear picture of the trade-offs involved between the criteria and hence provides the information necessary for making the key design decisions.

High efficient solar thermal collectors able to warm water up to 140 ºC

A Spanish SME, dedicated to the design and manufacture of installations for all types of fluids (air, hot, cold and superheated water, steam, etc.) with applications in both the household and in the commercial and industrial sector, has developed an innovative high efficient system of warm water production from solar thermal collectors which allows significant energy savings. The technology is patented and the company is looking for license and commercial agreements with technical assistance.

A Spanish SME is working in the design and manufacture of installations for all types of fluids, such as air, hot, cold and superheated water, steam, heating oil, compressed air, with applications in both the household and in the commercial and industrial sector.

This company has developed an innovative high efficient system for the production of warm water from solar thermal collectors which allows significant energy savings. The solution developed consists of an innovative heating system based on solar collectors able to warm water up to 140 ºC against the 90 ºC reached by the current systems.

Other current installations do not to take full advantage of its potential maximum output, which would be up to 140ºC in a hot summer day with high solar radiation. This is due at 100 ºC the water turns gaseous, which causes problems. Taking into account that the temperature the water must reach for domestic heating is 80º, current systems can only be used for domestic heating when they are just little bit below of their maximum output.

This solar heating installation consists of flat solar panels or vacuum tubes which can vary in number according to the purpose of the application, interconnecting tubes, heat exchanger and a storage tank, with the intelligent control mechanism incorporated into this traditional system allowing it to reach a wide range of working temperatures.

In this way, the solar heating installation make it possible to obtain water at the right temperature, such as running hot water, water for underfloor heating or water at high temperatures.

The technology is patented and the company is looking for license and commercial agreements with technical assistance.Innovative Aspects:The

system controls and obtains warm water proceeding from solar flat collectors or vacuum tubes, i.e. without a system of concentration, generating warm water with a temperature of up to 140 ºC.

The system allows energy savings about 20-30%, reducing operating costs in installations for the production of heat, using a clean and renewable energy: solar energy.

The installations are characterised by their versatility, allowing water to be obtained at a range of different temperatures making it ideal for use in many fields and processes, at both the domestic and industrial level.

The system can be remotely controlled.

Integrated off-grid renewable energy generation

A London-based university is developing an integrated approach to off-grid generation of renewable energy. The university is looking for partners in the energy generation industry to jointly set up a pilot system, with a view to test the feasibility of the system and adapt it to meet market needs.

To combat the effect of climate change, the UK has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 20% in 2020. To meet this target, the use of renewable sources for energy generation must be boosted significantly in the near future. However, in our moderate climate, any single renewable source cannot garuantee a constant supply of energy. The need for back-up by the national grid makes the present technology less useful in reaching emission targets. The "Fuel Cell-based integrated system" is a feasibility project which aims to integrate fuel cells, electrolyser and photovoltaic subsystems to generate enough zero-emission energy to power off-grid residential applications. Different design configurations and system sizing were investigated and estimation to the cost per kilowatt power and per CO2 emission reduction was made. The project is led by the university working closely with

industrial experts in electrolysers PV panels.Innovative Aspects:The aim of the project is to locally generate energy from renewable sources, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and making consumers less dependent on the national energy grid. Improvement of subsytem-integration will allow the system to meet specific market needs, increasing its appeal to prospective customers.

System for controlling loss in wine ageing

A Spanish SME designs and manufactures installations for all types of fluids (air, hot, cold and superheated water, steam, etc.) with applications in the household and the commercial and industrial sector. The company has developed an innovative system that allows controlling the loss of wine while it is stored in oak barrels, through the control of the osmotic balance between the wine and the ambient air. The company is looking for license and commercial agreements with technical assistance.

A Spanish SME is working in the design and manufacture of installations for all types of fluids, such as air, hot, cold and superheated water, steam, heating oil, compressed air, with applications in both the household and in the commercial and industrial sector.

This company has developed an innovative technology for controlling the environmental parameters in a wine ageing and storage cellar which affect the losses in wine stored in wooden casks. The technology is based on perfecting the air-conditioning system so that, thanks to a proper control system, all the environmental parameters can be regulated. The osmotic balance between the wine inside the barrel and the ambient air, controlling at the same time the amount of wine that leaves the cask and is dissipated into the atmosphere. Through the control of this process, the wastage during the ageing process and wine storage can considerably be reduced and even set the amount in percentage terms.

Another important aspect of this technology is the improvement in the quality of the environment inside the ageing cellar, a phenomenon achieved with the control of the level of mould populations present.

The technology is on going through the patent process and the company is looking for license and commercial agreements with technical

assistance.Innovative Aspects:The control system of losses is an important financial saving in the wine production process, since it allows to control and reduce considerably the wastage in wine caused during the cask-ageing process in oak barrels. This means that a larger volume of wine to process and sell can be obtained, with the resulting economic benefits for the winery. Another advantage of this technology is the improvement in the environmental quality inside the barrel cellar, since as well as controlling the atmosphere inside, it also acts on the existing colonies of micro-organisms, allowing the unwanted ones to be eliminated and only the desirable ones to remain.

An innovative measuring method of heating consumption in buildings

Researchers from a Technical University in north-west Poland developed an innovative measuring method of heating consumption in buildings. The main advantage over the conventional heating meters is its precise measurement of heating energy as it includes heating energy that flows from the neighbouring rooms. The University is looking for industrial partners interested in license agreement, adjustment to specific needs and further development of the technology.

Most common method used to measure the heat consumption and to divide the heating cost is based on heating meters placed on the heaters. However, a major disadvantage of this system derives from the exclusion of the heat flow between the apartments/rooms and the heat emitted by plumb lines, which results in large difference in the unit of used heating energy. A typical example would be a flat/room in which heating valves are turned off but the temperature remains between 18 and 22 degrees. This temperature level derives from the heating energy flowing from the

neighbouring rooms and the plumb lines these elements are excluded from any type of the temperature monitoring system/measuring method used in heating meters. Hence, a regular measurement lacks accuracy with the errors reaching up to few hundred per cent. The researchers have analyzed the causes of disproportions in the measurement. New method has been proposed, it is based on measurement of heat delivered to all rooms in the building and on calculation of separate heat consumption for every room/flat. It allows to divide the costs based on measurement and registration of the temperature in all flats in the building. A preliminary study has shown that this new system excludes major failures of previous measuring methods and can be used in both new and old buildings with heat insulation. A group of measuring systems based on this technology has

been proposed to housing co-operatives.Innovative Aspects:New technology allows to measure precisely the heating consumption in the flat/room/place taking into account the heating from and to the neighbouring rooms/flats.

Light circuitry electrical energy surveillance system

A Polish company specialised in IT and electronic engineering is offering light circuitry electrical energy surveillance system. The system is composed of electronic controllers and transformers designed for light circuits, which cause reduction of power in lighting systems. This decrease in voltage results in savings in the range of 20-30%. Company is looking for a commercial agreement with technical consultancy.

A Polish IT company introduced a reduction of power in its collectors, which is based on a lower source voltage for lighting systems. This decrease in voltage results in savings in the range of 20-30%, which is the main advantage of the system. The savings level may vary according to the type of light used and to the quality of equipment used in the lighting infrastructure. The system consists of several types of collectors, which can be used in different environments:1. The RC*GSM VR controller with its system of electronic relay switches based on IGBT transistors is designed to decrease the output voltage acting

as a source to a monophase lighting circuit. Thanks to this device it s possible to achieve savings stemming from a decrease of the power levels which are used by the lighting circuit. The system is available in a number of versions, which allows it to be applied in lighting circuits which reach a peak load amounting to between 10A and 40A in monophase. The application works automatically, according to the specified software settings. The controller works with all types of light sources, except those with electronic starters. It possesses a developed diagnostic program for all its elements. In case of a failure, the system switches to the so-called BYPASS

function the main voltage is switched over from the start of the system directly to the exit, bypassing the electronic relay switches. The whole apparatus is controlled by a microchip which adjusts the parameters of the

controller s operation in real-time, according to the output power and other parameters of the lighting circuit. 2. RC*GSM VRT transformers is designed for those circuits which possess a

multi-point controlling system and those lighting systems which don t have a separate lighting circuits, for example office buildings, hotels, students

dormitories and unstable installations. The controller enables the pre-setting of the program and timer, as well as the possibility of regulating the output voltage, transferring the voltage from the circuit value to the preferred reduced voltage, reading the voltage of the electrical current, registering critical states, etc. The device enables a simple transfer of equipment to the BYPASS function.

3. The RC*GSM controller controls the system s operations and allows for an optimisation of costs and for an effective energy management system within the lighting infrastructure. It can maintain the surveillance of eight independently configured lighting zones. Their output can be set to a variety of different operating functions. The controller can operate in the

pre-programmed switch-on mode where it will turn on the light at a designated time. There is also the possibility of adjusting the controller s

astronomical clock, which causes the light to be switched on at sundown and switched off at dawn. Additionally, the controller has a port for an

impulse counter. It is also equipped with an RTC a real time clock and a user interface in the form of a keypad and LCD screen. The device also has a built-in GSM modem and a Bluetooth module, which allows for a fast and simple configuration of the apparatus through a mobile phone or through a computer with access to the "Base" program software. An innovative method of two-side freezing of ice cubes

A technical university from north-west Poland developed an innovative method of two-side freezing of ice cubes in thermo-electric ice generators. This technology allows the production of different shapes, colours and size variations of the ice pieces (e.g. for beverage preservation or decoration purposes). Partners from the industrial sector are sought for license agreement, adjustment to specific needs, further development, testing new applications as well as technical consultancy.

The process of two-side freezing can be used for the production of edible ice in the cells of thermo-electric ice generators. Ice generators are applicable in the house kitchens, offices, bars, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, etc. The ice cubes can be produced in a set of different shapes, colours and size variations. They can be used for inner or outer cooling process of beverages, food and dishes. Additionally, the ice can take the form of decoration and/or advertising element, for example a company logo. Two prototypes with efficiency of 0,32 and 0,6 kg/h are available for laboratory tests. If requested, a complete set of technical documentation for freezing

units/blocks and power generator can be prepared.Innovative Aspects:At the moment this type of two-side freezing thermoelectric ice generator is not available on the global market. Two-side freezing is only applied in large compressing ice generators on fishing boats and transportation ships. The idea was to use this technology in an efficient manner in small ice

generators based on Peltier s cells, as a source of heat and cold. This eco-friendly technology of thermoelectric generation of cold combined with the two-side freezing process results in time and energy savings. The technology allows to reduce the production time by more than 20% in comparison to traditional one-side freezing of ice cubes in the generators having the same power consumption.

Energy storage with Methane production and Carbon Dioxide segregation.

A high-tech Italian SME (mechanical/chemical engineering: H2 separation technologies and technical/economical evaluation) offers ProGeo, an

innovative process to store low cost electric energy as methane chemical energy. Methane can be used during high peak electric demand (high

cost) or directly pumped into the net. The low cost electric energy comes from renewable sources or from large power plants, at night time.Partners sought are for technical/manufacturing and financial collaboration

The full process consists of 3 main phases: hydrolysis, methanation reaction and electric energy production. The main equipments are the electrolytic cells to produce H2, the methanation reactor to produce CH4 (from H2 and CO2) and the MCFC/SOFC Fuel cells or Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), for the delayed electric energy production.ProGeo utilizes the Hydrogen technology production and the Methane widespread technologies for its storage, distribution and use. The Methane

produced is CO2 neutral product, not a fossil fuel: this product can be defined as Green-Methane.

The new generation of electrolytic cells can reach an efficiency of 70%, while the methanation reactor works at 2 bars and 300°C, according to the

Sabatier s reaction: CO2 + 4H2O ? CH4+ 2H2O ?H298K= -164,9 kJ mol-1 (esothermic reaction). The methanation reaction results self maintaining and no additional energy is required. In these conditions and with a molar ratio H2/CH4 >4, the conversion factor results larger then 95% about, with NI (Ru etc.) catalyst bed (95% CH4 and 5% H2).

?The innovative aspect consists in the Hydrogen (H2) production through out of demand electric energy and its linkage with the first greenhouse gas (CO2) to produce, store, use the most widespread gas fuel (CH4) for energy production (closed loop configuration, Fig.1) and/or for distribution (open loop configuration, Fig.2).

?In this last case ProGeo needs CO2 as second input and the Methane production results not only CO2 neutral but decreases the CO2 emissions because decreases the fossil Methane demand.

?The efficiency of the chemical storage can be fully competitive with the two other known energy storage systems: the potential and thermal ones.

?The system is modular (15 years working life) and the components are already on the market (electrolysers, fuel cells or ICE) or can be easily manufactured (methanation reactor) by proper companies

?The minimal installed power depends on the min size of the electrolyser (about 10?20 kW) while the max installed power depends on the maximum allowable storage volumes for O2, CO2 and CH4.

?The potential application of the technology is supplying buffer systems or pick demand systems for private and public offices, shopping centres etc. The proposal technology results easily connectable to renewable power plants or electrical power stations that utilize fossil fuels. At last, Companies that produce CO2 as process waste (metallurgical industry, food industry,

continuous manufacturing cycle ceramic, tyres, etc.) can use our technology to produce both Methane and Electricity and to reduce the CO2

emissions.Innovative Aspects:ProGeo is a very powerful energy storage system;It can store electric energy from all renewable or basic energy power plants;

It is modular, from few kW to several MW;It results completely self-governing and it is easily connectable to existing plants;

The total efficiency is about 45% (from input electric energy to delayed output energy and with MCFC);

From an economic point of view, the running costs derive mainly from the out of demand electric energy cost, roughly about 4c¬/kW. The capital costs of the high efficiency electrolysers is quickly decreasing (4 Nm3/h - 30 bar about 40 k¬ - source: IdroGen2 S.r.l) and the methanation reactor is a quite simple component (about 25 k¬/Nm3/h of CH4).

About the delayed electric energy production, the global cost of the current engines or small turbines results very low: about 800-1200 ¬/kW.

An example of ProGeo application for a small plant with CH4 production (for local public transport service, not for energy storage), gives a final amortization time of 3 years.

Electrical generation from low temperature heat and storage with Methane production.

An Italian company, located in Rome, specialized in mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering offers an innovative process to produce electric energy from low temperature heat and, if required, to storage the produced electricity in the chemical energy of methane (CH4). The methane can be

used during high peak electric energy demand (high cost energy) or directly pumped into the net.The partners sought are companies for technical/manufacturing collaboration and financial resources.

The full process consists of 2 main phases: the production of electric energy and its storage in the Methane chemical energy, for medium-large power applications.

-- About the first phase (Mag Spark technology), an electromagnetic system based on the alternative translation of a magnetic disk inside a coils system, produces electric energy. The power necessary to the alternative movement of the disk derives form the expansion of a properly heated fluid.

The efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle agrees with Carnot s cycle but two points are essential : * Mag Spark can use low temperature heat, that it is not possible to utilize with the actual turbocharged engines and must be taken away (power plants, industries etc); * Mag Spark technology results extremely strong, reliable and cheap.

-- About the second phase (ProGeo technology), a simple chemical system can produce first H2 and then CH4 (from H2 and CO2). The energy necessary to the electrolysers derives from Mag Spark surplus production. At last and if required, a stack of MCFC/SOFC Fuel cells or an Internal

Combustion Engines (ICE) can produce delayed high cost electric energy.ProGeo utilizes the Hydrogen technology production and the Methane widespread technologies for its storage, distribution and use. The Methane

The efficiency of the chemical storage (for the medium-large scale) can be fully competitive with the other energy storage systems.

- The innovative aspect consists in the possibility to generate and store electric energy from every source, low temperature heat included.

- Other innovative aspects are the Mag Spark cost effectiveness and the ProGeo storage capacity in a closed loop configuration (see Fig.2).

- Both systems are modular and can be adjusted for a quite large power range (10?100 kW).

- For more powerful applications (>100 kW) ProGeo can be connected, at night time, to the electrical net and can use low cost energy from all the

Development of a novel integrated system for renewable energy generation

A London-based company is developing a novel integrated system for renewable energy generation. The system will store excess generated energy to constantly match supply and demand, eliminating the need for back-up power stations and offering profits through arbitrage. The company is looking for technology providers, power utility companies, wind farm developers and major energy users as partners to form a joint venture for development and feasibility study of the system.

The UK government, recognising the issue of Climate Change, have committed to a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020. This has resulted in plans to provide substantially more electrical power from renewable sources such as wind, solar, wave and tidal resources.

The problem with energy from renewables is that supply and demand are rarely matched. This presents problems for grid management and requires overcapacity in the national electricity supply system. In addition, the grid will rely on fossil fuel powered power stations to cover times when there is little wind and calm seas. Real impact on climate change can be achieved only if the need for fossil fuel powered back-up stations can be removed.

A London-based company is developing an integrated system for renewable energy generation that will have the ability to provide constant base load power to the grid and respond rapidly to spikes in demand.

At the heart of this system is an energy storage system that converts electrical energy generated from renewable sources into heat that can be stored in a well insulated 'Heat Core' at times of low demand. At times of peak demand, this energy can be released in the form of superheated steam which is used to drive a steam turbine to convert the energy back to electricity.

Alongside the Heat Core is a conventional Bio-Fuel fired boiler; this could also be an existing coal or gas fired power station. This boiler can act as a final stage heater to the steam coming from the Heat Core if required or as a booster at peak demand. It can also act independently to the Heat Core to provide steam to the turbines.

The Heat Core is split into zones which can be heated or cooled separately. The system includes a heat exchanger and heat pump which enables recovery of waste heat from the turbine exhaust which is then stored in the cooler zones in the Heat Core. The heat pump is powered by surplus energy from renewable sources or the grid - with a coefficient of performance (COP) in excess of 4 - significant power advantages can be gained even after the 50-60% losses in the steam turbines are taken into account. The whole system is managed by specialised software which measures input power against grid demand and determines the best use of the input energy within the system to meet that demand. The software also monitors energy pricing on the power market and optimises power delivery to the grid to maximise revenue through arbitrage.

The company is looking for technology providers, power utility companies, wind farm developers and major energy users as partners to form a joint venture for the development of the system and for carrying out a feasibility study. Based on the results of the feasibility study, the joint venture will

decide a strategy for national or global roll-out of the system.Innovative Aspects:Real impact on climate change by renewable energy generation

can only be achieved if the need for fossil fuel powered back-up stations can

be removed. This system will provide a constant base load power and respond quickly to spikes in energy demand, eliminating the dependence on the fossil fuel based national grid.

A key aspect of this system is that all the technologies necessary are already available; they only need to be brought together in one system. This reduces risk to an easily manageable level.

The cost of energy can vary from £15/MWh at low demand to £300/MWh at peak times. There is clearly much scope for arbitrage the ability to store

electricity and sell it at times of peak demand could bring significant returns, especially if the electricity is free to produce and would otherwise be wasted.

Storage of renewable and/or waste energy for space heating by humidity sorption

A Dutch SME developed a process for storage of energy, like solar and / or waste energy in summertime for room heating use in wintertime. In the winter moisture from air is adsorbed by a humidity adsorbing material and the heat of adsorption is used. During the summer the adsorbing material is dried by waste energy or by solar energy. The SME is looking for partners to develop applications in buildings, offices and industry.

Storage of energy is a big problem. A lot of (green) energy is produced during the summer (solar energy, waste energy, etc.) and should be used during the winter-season.The Dutch SME has created an innovative solution for this problem. In the winter the moisture from air that has to be ventilated out of a building is adsorbed by a humidity adsorbing material. By adsorption of moisture the ventilated air heats up and this adsorption heat can be used in heat exchange to warm the incoming fresh air. In the summertime, solar energy or waste heat is used to dry the adsorbent used for demoisturizing the air.The adsorption material is available again in the heating season. In this way the need to use fossil fuels for space heating is minimized.A working solution is created to the solar energy paradox: you need the energy provided by the sun when it is most likely that the sun is not shining enough.Over the past 3 years, the company has been testing and evaluating pertinent parameters needed for scale-up. They have also been assessing alternatives in order to find an optimal solution within their process. They accumulated significant volumes of pertinent know-how, design and scale up data to imminently realize a first residential and/or industrial reference. The process consists of 2 phases in its annual cycle, the heating phase (typically winter and parts of spring) and the drying phase (primarily the summer and also part spring). Herewith, a brief and simplified description is presented. The adsorption / heating phase

In the heating phase, room air is ventilated out of the house at typically 20-22°C with a relative humidity of 60-65%. This air is first channeled through the dry adsorbent contained in the energy store. The adsorbent adsorbs the water vapor from the air. This physical adsorption of vapor phase water molecules creates thermal energy: heat of adsorption. The air leaving is therefore on average 10°C higher than the inlet room temperature. However, this is air that still needs to be ventilated. Consequently, the heated air is passed through a heat exchanger before being ventilated out of the house. The heat exchanger allows the colder incoming fresh air to be pre-heated all the way to room temperature without additional heating. The heat exchanger utilized is of the countercurrent flowing type, thus achieving maximum heat transfer from air flowing out to the incoming air. This brings the incoming air to a temperature within a 5° C approach to the warm ventilated air.

The drying phaseDuring the heating season, the Energy Store continuously adsorbs water vapor in its adsorbent until it loses its capacity to adsorb more. At a certain point, when the adsorbent has been loaded to its maximum amount of water vapor, there is no further heating effect from the humid air flowing through. Therefore the adsorbent must be dried in the (non-heating) spring and summer season in order to be ready for the next heating season again.Options in this area are feasible, industrially dried adsorbent can be

delivered and inserted in the system at start of heating season and halfway (for instance). This decreases the storage volume requirement, making it easier to install the system not only to newly built homes but into existing ones as well. Thus the technology also offers in an optional business model a novel district heating scheme whereby the adsorbent material becomes a waste heat energy carrier from industrial facilities such as gas fired power

plants and/or farms with biomass combustion systems.Innovative Aspects:The problem of solar and /or waste energy storage is solved by

storage heating energy in summertime for space heating use in wintertime.

The most important advantage of the technology is that an average household or business can simply and effectively save up to 80% of its annual heating energy cost, effortlessly saving some 80% of the same household CO2 emission related to room heating.

New control board for brushless direct-current electricity (BLDC) motor and condensing boiler

An Italian company has designed and realized an innovative system to control the brushless direct-current electricity (BLDC) motor applied to the fan driver of a condensing boiler. A single channel for thermoregulation and safety critical operations of the on board fan driver is used, resulting in higher efficiency and lower emission. The system allows remote control and failure diagnosis, as well. Companies or research organizations are sought for commercial agreement or technical cooperation.

The brushless direct-current electricity (BLDC) motor is nowadays widely used in many sectors, from very critical implementations in small capsular surgical microrobots to large scale industrial and automotive applications. It is better than the conventional DC motor with brushes because of its lifespan, high efficiency, and low maintenance. However it has some drawbacks over the advantages: a controller is required and driving it is more complex than driving the conventional one.A particular application is in the fan driver of a condensing boiler, for which a new control board has been designed and realized. A condensing boiler is a water heating device designed to recover the energy normally released into the atmosphere through the flue. It is improved by the use of a secondary heat exchanger which most commonly uses residual heat in the flue gas to heat the cooler returning water stream or by increasing the surface of the primary heat exchanger, so that condensing takes place easily. The higher the control of the main characteristics (condensation, warm, etc.) and of the BLDC fan driver, the better the system efficiency. Technology and informational system based on unconventional current and medium voltage sensors for managing the energy consumption at electric locomotives

A Romanian R&D institute in the field of electrical engineering has developed a new technology and informational system based on unconventional current and medium voltage sensors for managing the energy consumption at electric locomotives and is looking for R&D institutes, universities with experience in electric railway traction, companies manufacturing electric locomotives, in order to agree on research, development for electrical engineering, equipment manufacturing and implementation.

The R&D institute that developed this new technology has carried out a bushing with integrated current and medium voltage sensors, intended to supply from the contact line (current path from 25kV up to 400A), by pantograph, the single-phase transformer from locomotive cab.

The current sensors (one with non-saturable magnetic circuit LPCT and the other with Rogowski air-ring magnetic circuit Rgv, with which the bushing is equipped) and the capacitive divider voltage sensor integrated into the internal insulation of the bushing provide the connection to the informational system for consumed energy metering and to the protection device system from the primary supply circuit of the locomotive.

The bushing is equipped also with a conventional current sensor CT identical with that one with which the bushing existent on the locomotives in operation bat present is endowed. The mounting dimensions (flange, the fixing holes from the locomotive ceiling inclusively, the sizes of the primary input-output terminals from the locomotive outside and inside), identical with the dimensioned of bushings used on locomotives already in operation or in course of manufacturing, also presence of the conventional current sensor make possible mounting the bushings on the locomotives in operation (replacing the existent ones), without modifying the basic electric diagram; the advantage is the existence of a specialized computer and adequate programs at the locomotive board, able to cover a wide range of technical problems, that one mentioned in the title being just a small

concrete example.Innovative Aspects:The modernization of the system for monitoring and recording the energy consumption of electric locomotives is necessary as a measure contributing to a safer knowledge of operating modes specific to railway traffic in general, and to certain route in particular; by means of this action, an improvement of the railway circulation safety, traffic optimization and thus the increase of economic efficiency in passenger and goods transport are achieved. The fact of being a relatively autonomous equipment of the electric locomotive favors the application of flexible informational systems based on sensors associated with a microprocessor, able to perform many functions, not only that one related to active electric energy metering, bur also other functions like: overload protection, short-circuit protection, reactive energy metering a.s.o.

Highly efficient and cost-effective heat storage system with vacuum insulation

A small Austrian company developed a new heat storage system with vacuum insulation. This system causes less heat loss with the same space required and is thus much more efficient than competitive products with normal insulation materials (f.e. rockwool, polystyrene). It can be used for supplying hot water and heating for buildings and high temperature storage for solar tower power plants. The company is interested in a licence agreement, technical co-operation or financial assistance.

An Austrian company is providing energy cost-effective and environmentally friendly innovative products in the field of renewable energies. Its core competence is the development of efficient heat storages. Heat storages save energy in the form of heat, usually from active solar collectors, in an insulated repository for later use in space heating, domestic or process hot water or to generate electricity.

The most important characteristic feature of this heat storage is the use of vacuum instead of insulation materials. Vacuum has a much higher thermal insulation capacity than any other material on the market insulation. This results in 85 to 90% lower losses of heat energy, with the same space required, than in current systems.

The use of vacuum as thermal insulation also opens new possibilities in relation to additional functions of the heat storage. Due to the double-shell structure, interspersed with a vacuum, it is possible to use the outer shell as load-bearing element too.

Furthermore, the heat transfer can be precisely adjusted by varying the vacuum, so that rooms situated nearby can be heated directly by the heat storage. Additional heating elements for these rooms are redundant.

Through the installation of pipelines with cooling liquid within the outer shell, the system can additionally be used for cooling the rooms.Innovative

Aspects:- Very low heat losses and high cost efficiency because of the use of vacuum as insulation material.- High Cost efficiency.- Environmental benefits because no energy-intensive insulation material is needed.- Additional capabilities (f.e. load-bearing element) due to the construction.- Extended application possibilities (f.e. high temperature storage) because of significant reductions in heat loss.

The service provides data, graphs, images and videos related to temperature distribution inside the considered volume (a room, an entire apartment or something similar) under certain operative conditions, such as heating or cooling plants and season conditions. Air movement, pressure and humidity distribution is also available. It is also possible to calculate and to quantify ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers ) comfort

indexes, like predicted mean vote, percentage of dissatisfied people, air discomfort, air diffusion performance, and so on.

In this way, it is possible to suggest remedial actions, to quantify the comfort level experienced by people standing in the ambient, to visualize, with very impressive images, every thermo-dynamic variables of

interest.Innovative Aspects:Today, the thermal behaviour of a building is estimated by using average values of physical quantities and it is not possible to have a more detailed knowledge on how temperature behaves locally. Comparisons between plants or material concurrent solutions are made regardless of spatial effects. Advantages on innovative solutions are not very clear and final customers have difficulties to decide to adopt such solutions. Thanks to this service the designer, the builder and final customers have the possibility of visualising, quantifying and verifying the proposed solution. This allows to make the impact of new methodologies, plants and materials clearer, to suggest ameliorative design, to support comparisons among different solutions.

This service can be exploited to study solutions that can help reducing energy costs and pollutant emissions, promoting new materials, plants or designing customised solutions, increasing the technical value of an architectural project.

Compact device for mass transfer between liquid films and vapour or gas

A Spanish research center has a method and device for mass transfer between liquid and vapour or gas. Applications to absorbers and desorbers in absorption chiller technology, evaporators, condensers and chemical reactors.Offered collaboration: further development, commercial viability assessment, commercial exploitation.

Method and device for high efficiency mass transfer between liquid and gaseous phases in a reduced volume. The figure attached below contains an external view of the invention. The device comprises one or more chambers, containing inlets of liquid and inlet of vapour or outlets of vapour. Inside the chamber the liquid stream forms an ultrathin and very stable film on the walls or other solid surfaces. Direct contact exists between liquid film and gas in the chamber. Heat and mass transfer takes place through the liquid free surface. Temperature in the liquid film may be controlled by heat transfer to or from the solid surface on whose surface the film flows. For example, performing as absorber, the device has an inlet of vapour that is completely or partially absorbed by the liquid film of solution through its free surface. In this example, the absorption heat may be dissipated to an exterior cooler stream, e.g. air, through the wall whose surface the solution film is attached on. Heat transfer Enhancers, such as fins, may be incorporated to this wall in order to increase the heat transfer to the exterior of the chamber. The solution exits the chamber with an increased concentration of the vapour chemical specie. Performing as a desorber, the inverse process occurs: vapour or gas is desorbed in the chamber and it is evacuated by a suitable exit. In this second example, the liquid steam at the exit contains less or null mass of the desorbed specie than the liquid flow at the inlet. The performing of the device working as condensator and evaporator is equal than functioning as absorber and desorber, respectively. However, in these last examples the chemical specie to condense or evaporate are the same than the one present in the liquid, thus not occurring absorption by only phase change.

Mass transfer efficiency in this device can reach very high levels, besides heat transfer between the liquid film and exterior air can be accomplish not requiring intermediate fluid and subsystems. Both hardware configuration and operation are simple, and no expensive components need to be devoted during the device construction. When comparing this other competing technologies, the use of this device allows an increase of operation efficiency and a reduction of volume in absorbers, desorbers (generator) of absorption chillers and also in evaporators, condensators, gas

cleaning, chemical reactors, among other mass transfer devices.Innovative Aspects:High mass transfer efficiency, small volume, constructive and

operative simplicity, direct air cooling.- Ultra-thin and stable film attached to a solid surface- Very compact and small device - High mass transfer efficiency- Reduced liquid and gas stored inside the device- Insensitive performance to movements and orientation changes- Flow of liquid and gas not based on gravity forces. Thus, the device may operated in microgravity or null gravity conditions.- Efficient controlling of liquid temperature during performance.- Air direct refrigeration or heating of the interior streams, through the walls of the chamber, not using intermediate fluids for it.- Other processes are possible in the device, for example the condensation of a fraction of selected gaseous species on the film in distillation and gas cleaning or washing, or the chemical or catalytical reaction between gas and liquid streams.

Electricity markets simulator

A Spanish institute offers a software tool consisting of a forecasting model for a electricity marked based on an energy bidding process. It is a simulator for competitive electricity markets, easily customizable for user needs. The group is looking for technical cooperation.

The model computes, from technical an economical information of the system, expected prices and productions in a one-year horizon. Besides it calculates the rest of the technnical and economical parameters that are interesting for the system operation (costs, number of working hour for plands, hydraulic resources management, market share, revenues, profits, etc.).

The simulation is based on market-equilibrium point computation, where a single decision of any agent produces a decrease of his profit.

This equilibrium is computed taking into acount the system technical constraints: power limitations, maximum and minimimum energy constraints and optimal use of generation technologies for each agent

(thermal, hydraulic or pumping plants).Innovative Aspects:The main technical advantages of the presented system are the following: it integrates technical and economical models, it is easily customizable for user needs, it is independent of agent number and it allows representing big-size systems.

Ice manufacturing system with significant low carbon advantages

An ice making machine has been tested at a pilot scale (30KW cooling) at a UK university. It uses about 30% of the power of any existing machine when making either solid ice or slurry ice. The system offers a range of potential energy saving advantages and offers a reliable and cheap method

of producing slurry ice for use in ice battery applications. Partners are sought to build a commercial version of the ice maker and establish a market lead.

The new machine was developed and tested at a UK university during the period 2004-2007 with the help of UK government funds. The high efficiency of the machine is a result of novel design of the evaporator head and a virtually energy-free defrost system with no moving parts (scrapers). The evaporator head consists of several evaporator plates connected in parallel with a conventional condensing pack. All the components are standard items available off-the-shelf and the refrigeration circuit can be either direct expansion or flooded evaporator type.

The primary objective of the project was to develop a reliable and cheap method of producing slurry ice for use in ice battery applications, three of

which are described below:

Building Cooling/Data Centre Cooling

Large commercial HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems commonly use packaged ice builder systems to reduce average daily electricity costs (peak shaving). Applying ice slurry technology to this application would show significant operating cost reductions due to higher efficiency and greater flexibility in the design for each application.

An Ice Slurry based Building Air Conditioning Plant offers a number of independent benefits

1. Use of Off Peak electricity for cooling offers savings to the building operator and benefits the supply utility by reducing the peak electricity demand. Transmission losses are also reduced (function of power transmitted).2. Increased plant efficiency. By operating at night during low ambient temperatures the ice plant is more efficient and therefore uses less electricity.3. Reduced pipework size. In a new build application the ice slurry can be pumped to the fan coils within the building. Due to the high cooling capacity of ice slurries all of the pipework can be significantly reduced in diameter, reducing initial capital costs.4. For data centre cooling it is vital that cooling is maintained during periods of power outages. Ice banks with DC operated pumps are now being installed in critical applications. Gas Turbine Inlet CoolingGas turbine inlet air cooling is now a widely promoted technology. The output of a gas turbine power plant reduces with increasing ambient temperature. One case study, using Ice based cooling, showed a 27% increase in peak output. Applying Ice Slurry technology would offer significantly increased savings above this level due to the higher plant efficiency. Combining air inlet cooling with a desalination system (ie using freezing to separate water from brine) would be of great benefit to utility companies operating in the Middle East.

If an ice battery system were to be incorporated as a first stage in large scale refrigeration systems (e.g. supermarkets, food warehouses) then up to 30% of the electrical power currently used by supermarkets could be

saved.Innovative Aspects:When making solid ice existing systems are inefficient. When making slurry ice they are inefficient, expensive and unreliable. "The new ice maker can be used to make solid ice far more efficiently than

existing machines whilst being only a little more expensive to build. The prototype has a COP of 3 (energy stored as ice divided by electrical energy used to produce ice) and this could be improved with more careful design. "The new ice maker can be used to make slurry ice far more efficiently than

existing machines whilst being much cheaper to build and, having no moving parts, being far more reliable. The prototype has a COP of around 2.9 and again there is considerable scope for improvement in a commercial version.

" The new system is about 3 times more energy efficient than existing systems and is not significantly more expensive to build.

The novel defrost system will find applications in other areas of refrigeration practise, such as air-to-air heat pumps. It will be possible to retrofit the new evaporator head to some existing systems thus providing a very large increase in efficiency at minimal capital cost.

Realisation of pilot project for the gasification and liquefaction of hard coal in open pits

A Hungarian SME dealing with mining design seeks a technology able to the gasification and/or liquefaction of hard coal with energy and/or chemical purposes. If the technology is successfully used in an open pit, it can be employed in underground mines. The technology should be cost-effective and meet the regulations of environmental protection. The technology has to be operationally tried out and used on an industrial scale. Cooperation sought: Technical Co-operation or Financial Resources.

A Hungarian SME specialist in mining design with ISO 9001:2000 ISO qualifications possesses an open pit with 2.3 million tonnes of coal resources as well as an underground mining area already researched, holding 430 million tonnes of coal resources.

Coal mining could not over times remain competitive with lower oil and natural gas prices. At the territory at the company's disposal there was successful research done in the 1990s to exploit possibilites of gasifying coal found in that area.

At the present time the key to success of every coal project is the utilization of coal or finding a method to convert it, which explains the importance of finding the most optimal technological solution to use it as an energy or chemical primary material.

There is no exclusion in the search for technology, if it is cost-effective, both gasification and liquefaction may be the solution.

Consequently the company plans the execution of this technology primarily in open pits.Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:The

pilot project disposes of coal resources of 2.3 million tones (100,000 tonnes of coal annually) with a quality grading of 17.0 MJ/kg.

Expectations towards the technology sought:" Cardinal expectation is cost-effectiveness," Complying with environmental protection regulations," Relatively low energy intensity.

The pilot project is expected to utilize 100-250 tonnes of coal on a daily basis.

Quality parameters of the coal utilized during the pilot project: Net calorific value (in situ):19,458 kJ/kg

Total humidity: 6.2 % Dry ash content: 33 %

Sea swell / wave energy converter providing 100% renewable energy on demand

A company in the UK has succesfully devised, built and tested a patent-protected sea swell / wave energy device, capable of delivering 100% renewable energy on demand. Each device has less than five moving parts and with no hydraulics or electrics on board, it offers numerous competitive advantages over other wave power devices.

Partners are now sought for additional financial resources and collaboration to build a pre-production 61.25kW unit before building a full-scale 1MW production unit.

The heart of the device is a double-action pump, with a float at each end of the cylinder. The surface float is connected to the piston and the sub-sea float is connected to the cylinder, which is tethered to the sea bed by a single cable. The surface float rises and falls with the swell and can pump seawater, on both strokes, to a raised penstock which can either be located in the sea (for example within the body of an offshore wind turbine column) or to a penstock or reservoir onshore. Electricity generated is then a straightforward hydro project, with the added advantage of being able to deliver this renewable electricity on demand.

The first unit, a 1:14 scale device using an 83mm diameter piston, was tested in 2009 and pumped sea water ashore at the rate of 3,300 litres per hour and at a pressure of 5 bar, equivalent to a head of at least 40 metres. The device was in the sea for five weeks and performed with no breakdowns. During the test it was connected to a small Pelton turbine and powered a 1,050W lighting rig.

The company is now seeking partners to help finance the construction and deployment of a pre-production 61.25kW prototype device, (piston diameter 578mm) so that it can be on long-term test for up to 12 months, with remote monitoring by an accredited 3rd party such as a university research department.

This will provide information for the development of a pair of 1200mm units which would have a combined output of 1MW generating a maximum of 8,164MWh per annum.

On this project the piston diameter would be 1200 mm and the stroke 12 metres. The most visible component of this device would be the surface float which would be the size of a large shipping lane navigation buoy, approximately 8 metres diameter and two metres high.

The project team estimate that two 1200 mm units at full output can provide the electricity for 1 720 homes, at a cost of generation of 1.6 pence /kWh. This is cheaper than any other form of generation, whether coal, nuclear, gas or any other renewable source.

Both devices have been designed using the latest CAD/CAM software and all other 3rd parties, including fabricators, marine deployment companies, seabed remediators and university monitoring departments have all been approved and are awaiting approval to commence on the

project.Innovative Aspects:Advantages of the device over other wave / tidal devices are:

1) Reliability- no electrics or hydraulic systems on board; 2) Simplicity - less than five moving parts within the unit;3) Versatility - can be deployed at a range of sea depths;

4) Durability can withstand storm conditions as each unit can be locked down in the full compression position; 5) Can be mass-installed in high concentrations (no exclusion zone required as device does not create a circumferential arc in tidal waters); 6) Can deliver on-demand or stored energy unlike all other wind, wave or tidal technologies; 7) Can be used for desalination purposes or as a pumped supply to prevent harbours from silting up.

The technology is much more simple than competitor systems and costings suggest the lowest cost for electricity generation, bar none.

Selective Catalyst Design

A US Global Automotive Manufacturer, invites proposals for selective catalyst technologies that preferentially oxidize CO to CO2 over NH3 to NOx and/or N2.

Environmental concerns are demanding increasingly effective control of automotive exhaust emissions. Hydrocarbon and CO emissions, as well as NOx emissions are of concern. Hydrocarbons and CO emissions are treated with an oxidation catalyst to convert them to CO2 and water. Under oxygen-rich environments, NOx emissions are controlled through the use of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device. This technology requires the introduction of ammonia to faciliate the conversion of NOx to N2. The ammonia intermediary is critical to ensuring the reduction reactions occur per design and result in minimum NOx emissions leaving the tailpipe. The client seeks to further reduce CO emissions by using an additional oxidation catalyst in the vicinity of the SCR device. However, if this oxidation catalyst is not discriminating, some of the injected ammonia can

be oxidized to NOx and/or N2 thereby defeating the purpose of ammonia injection and reducing the effectivenss of the SCR device. Thus, the client wishes to identify and develop new selective catalyst materials and/or designs which can selectively oxidize CO to CO2 over NH3 to NOx.

POSSIBLE APPROACHESPossible approaches might include, but are not limited to:" Novel oxide-based catalysts" Zeolite based catalysts

APPROACHES NOT OF INTERESTThe following approaches are not of interest:" Systems based on conventional Pt or Pd catalysts

" Non-catalytic systemsTechnical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:The successful technology will:

" Convert CO to CO2 at a rate of =80%" Convert NH3 to NOx/N2 at a rate of =10%" Operate in the temperature range of 150 to 600°C" Be free of highly corrosive, toxic, or volatile components" Be compatible with both diesel and direct injection gasoline engines" Cost <1.5 times price of currently available selective catalysts

Removing Carbone Dioxide from Methane Fermentation Gas Streams

A large US company is looking for proposals for technology for effectively removing carbon dioxide gas from methane fermentation gas that contains about 40% carbon dioxide gas. They are interested in licensing, joint development, equipment, facility sale.

The company uses methane fermentation as a method of processing sludge that is generated during the treatment of sewage. Specifically, the organic component of sewage sludge is converted by the action of microorganisms into methane fermentation gas that contains CO2 and CH4 as its main components. The methane fermentation gas does not contain sufficient energy in the form in which it is generated, but if it can be purified to a certain degree then it can be sold to gas companies. In particular, since it is difficult to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide gas from 40% in the starting gas to = 0.5%, the company is looking for excellent outside technology. So far, with their own purification technology they have only been able to reduce the CO2 concentration to about 10%, but as there are many types of carbon dioxide gas removal technology around the world, they are searching far and wide for promising technologies outside their company that they can introduce within their company in order to solve this problem.

Anticipated approaches include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: " Absorbing agents: - Formation of micro-bubbles to increase the contact surface area with the solvent. - Using alkali solvents to improve absorption. " Adsorbing materials. " Gas separation membranes. " Compression method. " Removal by combination or repetition of these methods.

The following approaches are not under consideration at this time: - CO2 removal using chemical reduction.

- CO2 removal using solidification technology.Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:Composition of the methane fermentation

gas to be processed, and its composition after purification: Starting GasAfter Purification

CH460 %100 % CO240 %0.5 %

O20.1 %0.01 % N20.4 %1.0 % H2S500 ppm0.7 ppm

Requirements for the carbon dioxide gas removal technology:"The final goal is to be able to reduce the CO2 within the methane fermentation gas from 40% to 0.5%."The company assumes that the CO2 concentration will be reduced to 0.5% through multiple processes, so it is not necessary that the removal be done by a single process, and proposals are welcomed that repeat the same process or combine multiple removal technologies."CH4 removal from the stream should be minimal. "After commercialization it is expected that about 1,000 m3 of methane fermentation gas will be purified per day. Preferred approaches will be

appropriate for industrial use e.g. low-cost, small scale, and simple.
