current worship seriesLiving the Story: Nehemiah

The Grapes of Wrath (Neh 5)—Social ills and communityproblems don’t just materialize out of thin air. They are the result of sinful behavior present within those communities. The topicof the Israelites’ moral choices and disobedience to God surfaces numerous times in both Ezra and Nehemiah. Nehemiah 5 servesas a case study where the greed and excess of some members ofthe community was leading to poverty and slavery among othermembers. Nehemiah addressed the matter by challenging those inthe wrong, and they, instead of bristling at his challenge, recognizedthe truth in it and took steps to make changes. As a church, we want to continue working in the realm of social issues and community transformation, but may we be ever reminded that the greatest needpeople have is for a relationship with God and a lifestyle becoming ever-more in line with his best. For social ills are really moral matters, and their solutions must include the spiritual component.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Jonah 3)—Jonah clearly wasn’t an enthusiastic messenger to the city of Nineveh, but proclaim God’s message he did. The citizens and the king responded in a very unexpected way, heeding the words of Jonah, turning from their evil acts, and fasting in hopes that God might turn from his path of judgment. The Assyrians’ actions of repentance and contrition move God and cause him to change his course of action, form judgment to forgiveness. How the UBC Family has been involved…

Even before the rain began to dissipate over Houston and Harvey meandered beyond the Texas border an invitation to serve was sent out to all who were able. Approximately 250 volunteers have answered the call so far.

Each day since Wednesday, these volunteers have been organized into work teams and sent into the surrounding communities.

Many in the community have donated supplies which volunteers have delivered to shelters, churches and First Responders. Team members rolled up their sleeves to pull up carpet, remove dry wall, move furniture and clean out the invasive water from homes, churches and the local Islamic Center.

These efforts will continue as long as we continue to receive requests for storm related assistance, so if you have volunteered already or are planning to volunteer…Thank You! If you know of someone with a storm-related need, please let us know.

UPCOMING NEED: Blood Drive @ UBC, Sun, Sept 10, 8 am–1 pmLooking for a way to help others in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey? Blood donations are greatly needed. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center was unable to collect any donations for three days, so they need our help to rebuildthe blood supply for patients across our region.
