The purpose of this curriculum booklet is to give you an insight into what your child is learning at Heartlands High School.
You will see that we have provided an overview of the curriculum to be studied throughout the year, including:
- Details of what will be studied within each subject;
- Suggestions for good websites and support materials for each subject;
- Details of the home learning timetable;
- Details of the Extended Schools timetable will appear on the school’s website.
It is our hope that this will help you to support your child’s learning.
Our best wishes for a year of excellent progress for your child!
Introduction
At Heartlands High School, we believe in enabling and encouraging all students to develop their talents, while at the same
time teaching the core subjects and securing excellent literacy and numeracy skills. We provide challenge to those
students who arrive already on Level 5 and above, and support for students who need extra help to develop their
potential. This is reflected in our curriculum plan, in which students are encouraged to choose pathways suited to them
as they move up through the school. Allied with our tutoring system and academic mentoring, this serves to ensure that
students are motivated and try their hardest. Assessments and reporting take place four times a year.
4
In Year 7, the focus is on supporting the transition from primary school and developing excellent communication and
Maths skills, as well as ensuring that students are able to develop their talents as they experience more specialist
teaching. Fourteen periods are spent on EXPLORE, a Literacy curriculum that includes English, History, Geography, RE
and Citizenship, and there are 8 periods of Maths. Creative subjects are taught as in-depth studies: six lessons a fortnight
for two half-terms. Design Technology is also taught in a carousel. Students are able to opt for French or Spanish. There
are also 20 SEARCH days throughout the year, in which students engage in active learning. Setting is used in some core
subjects to ensure the right level of challenge for all.
In Year 8
In Year 9, they develop their choices and choose to specialise in three subjects, ranging from Astronomy GCSE to ASDAN
for work-related learning. We set students according to ability in English, Maths and Science. Students are able to take an
extra language if they are talented in that area.
We aim to provide excellent learning for all, so that students leave us ready to fulfil their ambitions.

time and effort to trying to complete tasks. However, we also believe in supporting all students with tasks: if you look at
our Extended Schools timetable, you will find details of some of the clubs at which students may receive help. Please
ensure that your child has time to relax and enjoy their home time as well as doing home learning!
