who only require one language for a language studies degree. Committee members mentioned that this appeared to be an issue that needed to be resolved within the department, and that this was not necessarily the purview of the curriculum committee. L. Senechal pointed out that this degree, as written, is only available to students who are completing the University Preparation Pathway because it requires the IGETC or CSU-GE pattern. This is how the degree was approved at the Chancellor’s Office last year and this technicality was only recently realized. She asked if the committee wanted to set a precedent for disallowing CTE pathway students from earning a degree? Currently, this is the only one of its kind.

MODIFICATIONS TO AA in LANGUAGE STUDIES withdrawn by division representative in order to facilitate department level dialog about unresolved concerns within the department about the “two language” criteria, and whether it is appropriate to set a precedent for a “transfer only” AA degree.

Computer Science PROGRAM

The Computer Science A.S. Degree program at Modesto Junior College is designed to meet the needs of non-transfer students who wish to acquire the new computer skills needed in today’s work environment. The Computer Science program provides students with a general knowledge of computer literacy and information systems, microcomputer hardware and software systems, the ability to work with a wide variety of applications software, and an opportunity to develop programming and problem-solving skills.

Students who wish to major in Computer Science and transfer to a four-year institution should ask for program planning assistance from a business program advisor. Modesto Junior College offers a Computer Science transfer major to meet the major requirement for the Associate Degree. Transfer institutions vary in lower division (first two years of college) major department requirements. Meeting the Modesto Junior College Associate Degree major requirements does not necessarily mean the transfer institution’s major requirements have been met. Consult a Computer Science faculty advisor for assistance in determining the appropriate courses for the major you select.

A.A. Degree: Computer Science To earn an Associate in Arts Degree in this major, the student must complete the requirements detailed in

the Career Technical Education Pathway (p.71) or the University Preparation Pathway (p. 69) which include completion of the requirements below.. Students are urged to meet with a Computer Science faculty advisor to assist them plan their specific program for graduation.

1 Students seeking certification in GE breadths prior to transfer must have passed the test before Fall 09.

2 If a student passes more than one AP exam in physics, only six units of credit may be applied to the baccalaureate, and four units of credit may be applied to a certification in GE Breadth.

3 AP exams may be used in either area regardless of where the certifying CCC’s discipline is located.4 Students who pass AP Environmental Science earn 4 units of credit. Tests taken Fall 09 or earlier may

apply to either (B1+B3) or (B2+B3) of GE Breadth. After Fall 09, those credits only apply to (B1+B3.)5 Students seeking certification in GE breadth areas prior to transfer must have passed the test before

Fall 2010.† Courses requiring ENGL 101 as a prerequisite have been met using the AP English exams. No English/

Reading placement test is required. No Prerequisite Challenge petition is required.NOTE: Each AP exam may be applied to one IGETC area as satisfying one course requirement, with the exception of Language other than English (LOTE).

Rev11/09/09 RAC/lbs Approved by the MJC Curriculum Commitee 11/18/08. Updated November 12, 2009

Modesto Junior College recognizes the Advanced Placement (AP) Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Advanced Placement credit will be granted to those students earning a score of 3, 4, or 5 according to the following policy:

◗AP POLICY• Students must be enrolled at MJC in order to apply for unit credit for AP exams.

• Students will be granted unit credit for AP exam scores of three (3), four (4), or five (5) toward the fulfillment of requirements reflected in the chart.

• Unit credit earned through AP exams will be listed on the transcript based on the AP exam passed.

• Unit credit earned through AP exams to satisfy MJC-GE/Activities/Competencies will be based on the comparable course in the MJC catalog. A list of the comparable courses for each AP exam will be available from the MJC Articulation Officer (MM 205 D) upon request.

• All CSU campuses will accept the minimum units shown toward the fulfillment of the designated general education breadth area if the exam is included in a full or subject area certification.

• Units earned by AP exams will be used to meet IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum), with the exception of critical thinking, Area 1B & Speech Communications, Area 1C.

• Official score reports from the College Board AP Program must be sent to Modesto Junior College, Attention: Vice President, Student Services. Official score reports can be requested at (888) 225-5427 (toll-free).

◗FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY CAUTION The applicability & quantity of unit credit for AP exams granted toward admission, satisfaction of major, prerequisites, or baccaluareate degree, and/or GE Breadth requirements continues to be determined by the individual CSU/UC/private campuses. Students should meet with an MJC counselor and/or check with the transfer campus of their choice for its policies on awarding unit credit for AP exams.

◗AP RESTRICTIONS• Unit credit for AP exams will not be included in the fourteen (14) unit P/NP graduation

limitation established by MJC or the thirty (30) unit credit by examination limitation on challenge examinations.

• Unit credit for AP exams will not be used to satisfy the college's twelve-unit (12) residency requirement.

• Unit credit for AP exams will not be used to satisfy financial aid, veterans, or EOPS eligibility criteria regarding enrollment status.

• Unit credit for AP exams will not be used in lieu of MJC Assessment Tests to satisfy reading or math prerequisites. Courses requiring MATH 171 or MATH 172 as a prerequisite are not met using AP Calculus tests alone. The Math department still requires students to complete the Level 4 math assessment test and submit a prerequisite challenge form to the the Science, Math, and Engineering division office, Science building, Room 126.

Prerequisite Challenge petitions & Course Substitution forms are available through the respective division office.

Questions to consider:

1. MJC will honor the CSU and IGETC policies to “pass along”/reflect the above IB Exams on the CSU/IGETC patterns. Does the Curriculum Committee want to honor the above IB Exams for MJC-GE placement in a way that parallels the CSU/IGETC placement?

If the answer is yes to question #1, then continue with the following questions. 2. The CSU-GE pattern accepts some IB Exams with the minimum score of “4”.

The IGETC pattern requires the minimum score to be “5”. What will be the minimum score for an IB to apply to the MJC-GE pattern?

3. Currently, credit earned through AP Exams is listed on the transcript to reflect the AP Exam passed. For example: AP English Lit, 3 units, Pass. Do we want to post IB scores to the transcript in a similar format, e.g. IB Economics HL, 3 units, Pass

4. Do we want to disallow students from earning credit for those exams that have not locally been approved as equivalent to MJC-GE areas e.g. IB Philosophy?

5. Do we want to allow students the ability to use IB to petition for: a. Course substitution for AA/AS major, certificate or skills recognition? b. IB credit to serve as a prerequisite for all applicable courses and programs?

6. Will the IB Mathematics HL exam fulfill the Math competency required for graduation?

Page 59: Curriculum Committee AGENDA - MJC · Curriculum Committee Agenda – rev.11/16/2009 2:40 PM 3 November 17, 2009 CMPGR 225 3D Graphics and Animation 3 Effective: Spring 2010 Expedited!

7. Will students earn 3 units or 5 units for IB Language B exam to satisfy MJC, Area C? Will students earn 3 units or 5 units for the IB Mathematics HL exam to satisfy MJC, Area D2?

a. The CSUs and UCs are limiting the IB Exams to 3 units for the CSU and IGETC patterns. b. The current practice for MJC is to honor the unit count for the AP Exams for MJC-GE: Calculus AB-- MJC , Area D2 (5 units), CSU, Area B4 (3 units), IGETC, Area 2 (3 units)

Do we want to apply a similar practice with IB Exams?
