General Section Preamble

The academic course of study for dental medicine was introduced in order to establish a duration of study comparable to that of a majority of European countries. Its basic characteristics depart from the previous technical education to become a medical specialist for dental, oral and maxillary medicine and its goals are now oriented towards a three year technical education. The academic course of study prepares the student for their future profession as a dentist. Theoretical fundamentals as well as practical skills are imparted in an integrated, topic-focused and patient-oriented manner. Particular emphasis is placed on human science aspects in terms of the biopsychosocial model, Furthermore, the major aspects of scientific thinking are imparted. The aim is to provide the student with a broad medical education and thus the fullest qualifications for entry into the professional world and the optimal foundation for further education in every medical field after their graduation. Concurrently, in accordance with the expected ability to continue learning throughout their lives, the student should be given the capacity to critically approach medical changes during the course of their professional career. This curriculum also requires integration regarding the content of further education after graduation in order to create a consistent concept for the entire medical education. The course of study for dental medicine is an academic course of study. After graduation, it is possible to continue study for a doctoral degree in medical sciences. The equality of the sexes shall be upheld by the teachers as well as the students and shall be monitored through the working group on questions of equality. Gender specific aspects shall be taken into consideration in terms of content throughout the entire course of study.

Goal of the Course of Study 1. The goals are oriented towards the educational content and profiles of the previous education

to become a medical specialist for dental, oral and maxillary medicine. 2. The academic course of study for dental medicine imparts knowledge and skills in every

traditional section of dental medicine, such as conservative dental care, periodontology, and orthodontistry, to such a degree that the basic dental treatment of a general dental practice can be ensured.

3. The academic course of study serves as a foundation for continuing specialist education in the areas of dental, oral and maxillary medicine at a university or other educational institution.

4. The academic course of study builds the foundation for scientific activity in the sections of dental, oral and maxillary medicine.

§ 2. Duration of Study, Stages of Study

(1) The academic course of study for dental medicine consists of three stages of study with a total duration of 12 semesters. (2) The first stage of study encompasses 2 semesters and is at least 90% identical with the first stage of study for the course of study for human medicine. It is intended that this stage of study impart knowledge and basic understanding of the human organism and should provide the theoretical foundation for understanding the clinical presentations. The entry phase for the course of study including the exploration of the professional field as well as initial training of medical skills and communication are covered in this stage of study. During the exploration of the professional field, the

occupational descriptions relevant for dental medicine and the evaluation of technical skills will be addressed. The essential component of this stage of study is the “Introduction to Dental Medicine”. (3) The second stage of study encompasses four semesters. In the second stage of study, the students will acquire knowledge of the healthy and ill organism. The topic-centered, patient-oriented, interdisciplinary instruction, and the integration of the clinical presentations under the use of new forms of teaching, such as problem-based learning, shall serve as the foundation for the second stage of study. The fundamentals in the function of the chewing mechanism and specific dental medicine skills are imparted. (4) The third stage of study encompasses six semesters and is intended to impart scientific knowledge and practical skills specifically for activities in the field of dental medicine as well as to deepen the scientific training.

§ 3. Organization of the Stages of Study and Total Number of Hours

(1) The academic course of study for dental medicine encompasses a total of 230 semester hours of instruction (lectures, seminars, excursions, exercises, seminars with exercises, lectures with exercises) as well as a total of 72 weeks of practical training (255.6 semester hours). Of these, 23 semester hours are to be completed as free electives. (2) The first stage of study encompasses 2 semesters with 46.3 semester hours of required subjects; this includes an entry phase in the course of study of 6.6 semester hours. (3) The second stage of study encompasses 4 semesters with 75.7 semester hours and 2 weeks of practical training. (4) The third stage of study encompasses 6 semesters with 85 semester hours of required subjects as well as 70 weeks of practical training (248.88 semester hours).

§ 4.

Dissertations

The students must independently compose a written dissertation under the guidance of a university professor. The topic of the dissertation is to be derived from one of the examination subjects stipulated in the curriculum. In writing a dissertation, the author should show that they are capable of independently examining a scientific problem using scientific methods and presenting their findings. Essential evidence of this examination consists of the composition of a piece of written work containing a description of the problem and its classification within an overall interrelationship, as well as a presentation and discussion of the solution and the results. The holistic approach to medicine as a fundamental idea of the research, instruction and patient care as stipulated in the bio-psycho-social model of the Medical University of Graz, should also be followed within the framework of the dissertation. The dissertation will be evaluated by a university professor.

§ 5. Academic Degree

Graduates of the academic course of study for dental medicine are awarded the academic degree of “Doctor of Odontology”, in Latin "Doctor medicinae dentalis", abbreviated as “Dr.med.dent.”.

(2) The examinations for modules 9, 10, 11 (or their equivalent according to the equivalence list) can only be completed after the examinations for modules 7 & 8 (or their equivalent) have been completed with a passing grade. After completing the modules 9 through 11, the examinations for all further modules may be completed in any order. (3) Credit for examinations completed in accordance with the previously valid curriculum: The credit awarded for already completed section examinations can be found in the equivalence table. A module will be credited once all of the respective sections as listed in the table have been completed with a passing grade.

§ 17

Conclusion of the Second Stage of Study (1) The second stage of study is concluded after receiving a passing grade for each section of the second degree examination and after successfully completing the practical training course for oral and facial surgery with a passing grade. (2) Completion of the second stage of study with a passing grade is required in order to continue with the third stage of study.

§18 Ranking for Acceptance to Courses with a Limited Number of Participants in the Third

Stage of Study

(1) The exercises in the third stage of study are courses with continual evaluation of performance. Due to the current conditions regarding space and personnel at the University Clinic for Dental Medicine, the number of participants in the exercises and practical training courses of the third stage of study are limited to 12 participants per semester. Under the condition that the Clinic management is able to provide the expansion of resources as outlined in appendix 2, the number of participants in the third stage of study can be increased to 18 per semester. (2) Nevertheless, based on the large number of students in the second stage of study at the time this curriculum enters into effect, a delay in the acceptance to the courses outlined above is to be expected. (3) Should this actually be the case, the date of completion for the degree examination of the second stage of study will be used to determine the applicant ranking. Should multiple students have an equal ranking, the average grade weighed according to ECTS will be considered. (4) The ranking will be made by the Study and Examination Department and approved at first instance by a study rights body on September 30th for the winter semester and on February 28th for the summer semester.

Students, who are not able to attend the exercises or practical training courses due to the limited number of available places of study, may attend the lectures of the third stage of study and free electives. Such students will be given special consideration regarding the availability of places of study in the following year in accordance the ranking method outlined in paragraphs 3 to 5.

(1) It is recommended that courses be completed in the area of human or natural sciences. In particular, a course in one foreign language should be completed. It is also possible to attend any course of the medical faculty including those that currently exist with contents from complimentary medicine and homeopathy. (2) It is further recommended that, depending on the courses being offered, continuative courses in the following subjects: Dental Care Dental Prostheses Periodontology Oral Surgery (including dental x-ray diagnostics, dental anesthesiology and dental traumatology) Orthodontics Oral and Facial Surgery Illnesses of the Mucous Membrane of the Mouth Aging and Geriatric Illnesses Special Cases of Implant Prosthetic Surgery Forensic Medicine and Law for Dentists Aspects of Founding a Dental Office Dental Documentation and EDP Labor and Social Law with Regards to the Management of a Dental Office

§ 21. Requirements for Registration to Attend Courses that Require Special Previous

Knowledge in Order to Be Understood

(1) Courses designated with a Roman numeral are to be taken in numeric order, whereby the course with the lower number must first be completed with a passing grade before the course with the next highest number may be attended.

(2) Since graduates of the academic course of study for dental medicine will be bestowed the right to

independently practice dental medicine, the course of study is structured in semester-long thematic blocks that build upon each other according to accepted subject specific didactic approaches. This means that lectures and exercises for each semester may only be attended after completing the previous semester with a passing grade. The possible increase in the number of students in the third stage of study requires a reorganization of the sequence. This reorganization, together with an increase in the resources, will make it possible to increase the number of students. It will result in a lower degree of integration between the theoretical and practical instruction. In any case, once the number of students waiting for courses has been reduced, a return to a higher degree of integration (see curriculum June 22nd, 2005) is to be implemented.
