Avenues College is proud of its student centred learning program that supports all students to reach their potential. This Curriculum Guide is designed to provide you with information about subject and course offerings from Year 8 to Year 12 in 2020. The guide is a planning tool designed to enrich your learning experience during your time at Avenues College Avenues College continues to build and expand the Australian Curriculum in Years 8-10 to ensure excellence in academic, so-cial and cultural outcomes within a local, national and global context. Our 8-10 learning program continues to deliver quality standards in education with a strong focus on citizenship, service to community, social and health education, the environment and approaches to learning. The Senior School curriculum is based on supporting students as they work towards achieving their SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education), a qualification recognised both nationally and internationally. Avenues students begin the SACE with the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) in Year 10, and progress through Years 11 and 12 through the completion of both SACE sub-jects and VET courses. You will find the guide shows the progression of subjects in each of the Learning Areas this is to assist you when deciding what is most appropriate for your future. I advise you to read the Curriculum Guide carefully, discuss your choices with your family and your teachers at school, but most importantly, choose a balanced curriculum, allowing flexibility and providing a range of options once you leave Avenues College at the end of Year 12. Think carefully about your future pathways, and consider what subjects and courses you may need to gain university entrance, TAFE enrolment and employment. Robyn McLean

Principal

Students who have been identified or verified as hard of hearing/Deaf are integrated with students of Avenues College. The purpose of the Centre is to provide a broad balanced education that prepares the student for effective participation in society in accordance with DE Guidelines. Students attend college classes and can receive special instruction and have access to a team of Teachers of the Deaf and support staff who provide support and mentor each student. All students learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language) in Year 8 which supports the successful integration of the Deaf students. Teachers and Support Staff of the Deaf frequently team teach with the college staff in classes with students who are hard of hearing/Deaf are integrated.

AVENUES COLLEGE SACE PATHWAYS

At Avenues College we offer students the opportunity to design highly personalised study pathways by selecting their

subjects and courses from a wide range of study and VET options delivered at the college or flexibly through one of

our high quality external providers or industry partners. This makes it also possible for students to tailor highly

specialised Stage 2 packages (please see VET page).

Requirements of the SACE

There are two stages of the SACE:

Stage 1, which begins in Year 10 with the Personal Learning Plan, and continues through Year 11

Stage 2, which is undertaken in Year 12

Each subject or course that is successfully completed earns 'credits' towards the SACE

Students receive a final grade from A to E for each Stage 1 subject and a final grade from A+ to E– for each Stage 2 subject.

To qualify for the SACE students must:

Complete a minimum of 200 credits (150 of which can be gained through VET. See SACE Study Planner for details)

Achieve a C grade or better in the Stage 1 compulsory requirements

Achieve a C- grade or better in the Stage 2 compulsory requirements

The compulsory requirements are:

Personal Learning Plan - 10 credits at Stage 1 undertaken at Year 10

Literacy - at least 20 credits from English subjects (Stage 1 or Stage 2)

Numeracy - at least 10 credits from Mathematics subjects (Stage 1 or Stage 2)

Research Project - 10 credits at Stage 2 undertaken at Stage 1

Other Stage 2 subjects - at least 60 credits (three full year subjects) from a range of Stage 2 subjects

The remaining 90 credits can be gained through additional Stage 1 or Stage 2 subjects or Board-recognised courses of a

student's choice (such as vocational education and training (VET) or community learning).

For more information please visit the SACE website : www.sace.sa.edu.au

Going to University

Students who want the option of applying for a university degree as part of their tertiary studies will need to ensure that their

Year 12 subject choices make them eligible for an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).

This means that they must meet SACE requirements - including the equivalent of 90 Credits worth of Tertiary Admission

Subjects at Stage 2 (Year 12).

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING (VET) PATHWAYS

What is VET and how can I do it?

VET stands for Vocational Education and Training. The flexibility of the SACE enables students to include a signifi-cant amount of VET in their SACE studies. This will help students to build pathways in the SACE through VET and will encourage students to complete VET qualifications and experience a career pathway while still completing their SACE.
