WISDOM I need to make the wise choice. FAITH I can trust God no matter what. FRIENDSHIP I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT: UNDERCOVER KINDNESSSometimes the best sort of kindness

happens when no one is looking

and no one gets the credit. It’s fun

to surprise people with kindness.

That’s why, this month, we’re going

undercover to show kindness to all

sorts of people in our worlds.

Focal Wall: Get inspired by the theme

art for this month in Large Group

Visuals. Cut out giant red letters to

spell out “Undercover Kindness” to

look like a “confidential” stamp that

you might find on a manila envelope.

For more ideas, check out Week

1 of the Large Group and/or K-5

Compact scripts.

ABOUT

GODGod is the one and only true God, yet He

exists in three persons: God the Father,

God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God is the Creator, so everything belongs

to Him and is under His control. God is

holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and

loving. God is all knowing and purposeful,

so He’s at work to bring about His will. No

person, thing, or idea compares to God.

ABOUT

THE BIBLEGod reveals Himself to us through the

Bible, and it is 100% accurate, reliable, and

authoritative.

ABOUT

PEOPLEPeople are made in God’s image and for

His pleasure. But everybody falls short of

God’s intention, or ideal, for people. In

other words, everyone has sinned. As a

result, we are all separated from Him, even

though He wants an intimate relationship

with each of us.

ABOUT

SALVATIONThat’s why Jesus—God’s Son—came and

lived on this earth, died, and rose again.

God offers His free gift of salvation to all

who believe in Jesus and accept Him as

Savior—the only way to be forgiven and

reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts

this gift is adopted as a son or daughter

into God’s family and will live with Him

forever in heaven.

SMALL GROUP LEADEROne consistent leader for the same

8-10 children all year

• We suggest you start and end

in small group so kids connect

relationally with one leader and

other similar-aged peers.

• If you have multiple small groups

meeting in one room, try using

circle area rugs to give each group

their own spot.

• Offer as many of the activities as

your time, space, and resources

allow.

FOR LEADERS ONLYGOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN KINDNESS AND GOD’S CHARACTER,

AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD’S BIG STORY

If you look at the life of Jesus, He not

only showed kindness to others, but

He actually flipped the whole idea of

kindness on its head and redefined it

for His disciples.

He showed kindness to all people.

People who were marginalized.

People with bad reputations. Children,

beggars, the sick and outcast. All

people.

In the month of February, it seems like

everyone is talking about how they’re

going to show their friends and family

how valuable they are through cards

and candy and flowers. It could be that

the simplest way would make the most

impact: showing kindness the way

Jesus did and the way He taught His

followers.

We live in a world that most often

seems like it’s anything but kind. I

mean, just think about the arguments

that break out in your own home.

“You’re so mean,” or “Mom, he’s

being mean to me!” are probably

familiar phrases for many of us.

But what would happen if kindness

didn’t seem so rare? What would

happen if we decided to live out what

Jesus said about showing others they

are valuable?

That’s why we’re taking the whole

month to look more closely at

kindness: showing others they are

valuable by how you treat them.

This month, let’s think about how:

(1) Kindness is a reflection of God’s

character and it showed up in the

life of Jesus as He interacted with

the world around Him.

(2) Kindness is how we treat others the

way God has treated us.

(3) Kindness is a way we can show

others God’s character and who

Jesus is.

This week, we’re discovering:We kick off the month with a familiar

story found in Mark 10:13-16. Back

in Jesus’ time, children were of little

value, but Jesus did something

different. He said, “Let the little

children come to me … God’s

kingdom belongs to people like

them.” Jesus showed kindness to the

children when He welcomed them with

open arms.

Bottom Line: There’s always time to

be kind. We hope kids will learn that

they are never so important that they

can’t take time to be kind to those

around them.

Our memory verse is Luke 6:31, “Do

to others as you want them to do

to you.” (NIrV) This simple verse is

a great reminder of what Jesus said

about kindness. We would want others

to show kindness towards us, so it’s

important that we turn around and

show kindness to them as well.

PLUG IN: FOCUS THE ENERGYFocus the energy on today’s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to open your kids’ eyes to all the opportunities to be kind to others. Pray that they will carry the truth of today’s message into their lives in a practical way this week, taking time to be kind to everyone around them.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWhat You Need: An offering container; different lengths of rulers, paper strips, yarn, etc. (optional)

What You Do:Invite the kids to place their offerings in the container. Encourage them to name things that take a long time to do and then name things that only take a short time to do. For older children you can add complexity by guiding them to name things that take a long, longer, and longest time to do; then challenge them to name things that take a short, shorter, and shortest time to do. Note: Silly, sillier, and silliest examples are welcomed!

For example: It takes a long time to baby step backwards around the church building; it takes a longer time to baby step backwards around the church building and crab walk to a familiar location in your area; it takes the longest time to baby step backwards around the church building, crab walk to a familiar location in your area, and then hop to a rocket ship and fly to the moon!

Hint for visual learners: provide different lengths of rulers, paper strips, yarn, or other objects to serve as references for long/short, long/longer/longest and short/shorter/shortest. Working with concrete examples may help the kids while they brainstorm ideas.

2. TIME!What You Need: Stopwatch

What You Do:Lead the kids in a series of active, engaging, and (sometimes) wacky activities. Time the kids for each activity. Possibilities: singing the alphabet song, singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” while holding their tongues, singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” while patting their nose and hopping on one foot, doing 10 jumping jacks, clapping 10 times, clapping 50 times, walking a balance line, walking a balance line backwards, hugging a friend, and smiling.

Note: Be sure to end the activity by guiding the kids to do a quick act of kindness such as a high five or fist bump.

What You Say:

“Which activity took the longest time to do? Which activity took the shortest time to do? Long or short, let’s go to Large Group where we’ll hear about something that there’s ALWAYS time to do.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

CATCH ON: MAKE THE CONNECTIONMake the connection of how today’s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. TICK-TOCK (application activity / great for active learners / possible large-group activity)What You Need: prepared dice from the Activity Pages; a bell or SFX of an old fashioned alarm clock ringing or grandfather clock chiming

What You Do:Show the kids the acts of kindness die, briefly identifying the different kindnesses shown. Choose a volunteer to stand beside you. Guide the other kids to mingle around your Small Group space (or your room if you’re making this a large-group activity), moving or marching in rhythm as you chant:

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock goes the clock; (repeat 0-3X, varying the number of repetitions each round) tick-tock, tick-tock, there’s always time to …

Ring the bell or cue the SFX, prompting the kids to freeze and the volunteer to roll the dice. Call out the act of kindness and the number rolled, such as share a cookie with one person, smile at three people, or give a high-five to two people. Lead the kids to either pantomime or perform the action to the number of people called. (You’ll probably have kids “giving a coat” to a kid who’s also “giving a coat” to another kid or a kid trying to high-five a kid who’s high-fiving another kid. That’s okay. It’s more important for them to practice the act of kindness than for the activity to be super organized.)

What You Say:“Great job! When you give someone a smile, a high-five, or a cookie, you’re showing kindness to that person. God wants us to take time to be kind because kindness shows others what He is like. When have you taken time to show kindness to others? (I let my brother choose which movie to watch, I gave my teacher a card, I helped pick up at school, etc.) How can you take the

time to show kindness this week? (Pause.) (Tell the kids one way you will

show kindness this week.) Remember: there’s always time to be kind. So this week, take time to be kind and show others what God is like!”

* 2. COME TO ME (application activity)What You Need: “Hand Template” Activity Page, smocks, pillowcases, pieces of cardboard or cardstock, permanent markers or fabric markers, “Let the children come to me” paperAlternative: “Hand Template” Activity Page, prepared fleece, permanent markers or fabric markers, fiberfill

What You Do:Help each child put on a smock. Hand out pillowcases and help kids slide a piece of cardboard inside. Show a “Hand Template” and invite the kids to recall and share what a hand reminds them of from the story. (Jesus put His hands on the children and blessed them.) Have kids trace their own hand or set out the hand templates and show kids how they can trace the templates onto their pillowcases. Also guide the kids to write, “Let the children come to me,” somewhere on their cases. Encourage kids to color their traced hands and then use the markers to decorate the pillowcases as they choose. Provide assistance as necessary, but be sure to allow the kids to do as much by themselves as possible. Kids can take the pillowcases home as reminders that they are valuable to Jesus.

NOTE: If you use permanent markers, direct parents to dry the pillowcases on high heat for 30 minutes before use. If you use fabric markers, direct parents to dry the pillowcases according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Alternative: If you chose the fleece option, let children choose a piece of prepared fleece. Guide them to decorate the fabric as outlined above using a “Hand Template” and markers. Then let them choose a second piece of fleece. Show kids how to lay one piece of fleece over the other (being sure the decorated side is out!) and double knot the “fringe” to tie the pieces together. When three sides have been tied, guide kids to fill the pillow with the fiberfill, and then tie the final side to close the pillow.

What You Say:“How was Jesus kind to the children? (Pause.) Yes! He took each child in His arms and blessed them. He took the time to let the children know that they were loved, important, and valuable. That’s kindness—showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.

“Are YOU valuable to Jesus? You bet! If Jesus came to our group today, He would take the time to hold each one of you in His arms. And just like He did long ago, He would put His hands on you and pray a special prayer of blessing for you.

“You can take your pillowcases (or pillows) home to remind you how much Jesus loves you and you are valuable to Him. You can also let them remind you that since Jesus took the time to be kind to the children, you can take time to

be kind to others, too. There’s always time to be kind.”

3. LET CHILDREN COME OVER (memory verse activity / great for active learners / possible large-group activity)What You Need: Bibles, “Memory Verse Cards” (Activity Page), dot stickers in eight colors (optional)

What You Do:Lead the kids in a variation of “Red Rover.” Guide kids to line up shoulder to shoulder at one end of your area. Randomly place the “Bible Verse Cards” in the middle of your area and then stand at the far end. Call one or more kids to you at a time, naming a particular way to move each time: “Come over, come over, let ______ tiptoe / crab walk / hop / jump / walk backwards over.” The child(ren) you name will move (doing the motion/movement you called out) to the cards, pick one up, and continue to your end of the area.

(Note: If multiple groups meet in your area, consider making this a large-group game. To do so, guide the kids to line up in teams of eight. Give each child within a team a different color dot sticker. Place a set of “Bible Verse Cards” opposite each team. During the game, call kids over by color.)

When the kids collect every card, guide them to work together to put the verse in order. Cue the kids to point to each word as you read the verse aloud. Finally, lead the kids to look up the verse using the Bible navigation tips below.

Finding verses with kindergartners: Guide children to open the Bibles to the marked page. Point to the word Luke at the top

of the page as you say “Luke” aloud. Then guide children to find the big number 6 on the page. Explain that this is the chapter

number. Finally, guide them to look under the big 6 for the little 31; this is the verse number. Tell them to leave their finger on the

verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the verse together.

Finding verses with 1st graders: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents. (Hold up a Bible

opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of contents, lead them

to find Luke in the list under “New Testament.” You can help by telling them that Luke starts with the letters L-U. When the kids

find Luke, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the number tells them on what page they can find

Luke. Help the kids find the page. When they find Luke, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help

them find chapter 6. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Help them find verse 31 in chapter 6. Tell them to leave

their finger on the verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the verse together.

What You Say:“What does it mean to ‘do to others as you want them to do to you’? (Treat others the way I want to be treated. Be kind to others.) Yes! ‘Do to others as you want them to do to you’ means that God wants you to treat others the way you want to be treated. How do you like to be treated? (I like people to be nice to me. I like people to be kind to me.) How do you feel when people are kind to you? (good, happy, important) Do you think other people feel the same way when you are kind to them? (Pause.) Yes, I think they do, too. So take time to be kind to others. When you do,

there’s always time to be kind.”

PRAY AND DISMISSWhat You Need: Bible

What You Do: Briefly review the Bible story and kindness as outlined below. Then pray Scripture over each child. Suggested blessings are provided below.

What You Say:“In Large Group today, we heard a true story from the book of Mark. (Open your Bible and read Mark 10:13-16.) Wow! People were bringing children to Jesus, but what were His friends, the disciples, doing? Yes, the disciples were telling the people to stop! The disciples didn’t think the children were important enough for Jesus to take the time to be kind to them. But when Jesus saw what was happening, how did He feel? Yes! He was angry. What did He tell his disciples? (Pause.) Yes! He said, ‘Let the little children come to me. Don’t keep them away.’ (Mark 10:14, NIrV) And then Jesus took the children in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.

“Jesus did more than just give the children a high five and pray for them. He took the time to hold each one in His arms. He took the time to let the children know that they were loved and important and valuable. That’s kindness—showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.

“You are valuable to Jesus, too! If He came to our group today, I believe He would take the time to hold each one of YOU in His arms. And just like He did long ago, He would put His hands on you and pray a special prayer of blessing for you.

“Jesus isn’t walking on earth today to take you in his arms and bless you; but because we love Jesus we want to pray for all of you today!”

(Use one of the Scriptures below or another verse that is special to you and insert each kid’s name to make it personal to them.)

“[Child’s name], may the LORD bless you and take good care of you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD look on you with favor and give you his peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26, NIrV)

“The LORD your God is with you, [child’s name]. He is mighty enough to save you. He will take great delight in you. The quietness of his love will calm you down. He will sing with joy because of you.” (Zephaniah 3:17, NIrV)

“God chose [you], [child’s name], to belong to Christ before the world was created. He chose [you] to be holy and without blame in his eyes. He loved [you].” (Ephesians 1:4, NIrV)

“[Child’s name], may [God’s] Holy Spirit give you his power deep down inside you. Then Christ will live in your [heart] because you believe in him. … May you know how wide and long and high and deep [Christ’s love] is. And may you … be filled with everything God has for you.” (Ephesians 3:16-19, NIrV)
