COURSE, CURRICULUM, AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

______________________________________________________________________

UNCG 2013 Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture Worked with Tina Sarawgi, Director of Graduate Studies in IARc, and faculty in the department to develop a Master of Fine Arts, a terminal degree, in our graduate program. Approved to establish by the UNC Board of Governors, June 2013. 2011 Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Interior Architecture Worked with faculty in IAR and with new Dean Tim Johnston to change the name of the Bachelor of Science degree to a BFA, a decision that better reflects the nature of the curriculum and the education that the students receive. 2011 IAR 124: Sustainability 101 The 3 credit course is ideally suited for first year, first semester students as an introduction to principles of sustainability which are valued at UNCG. This is expected to be a high enrollment course. Course content includes lecture, films, guest speakers, group and individual student sustainability events and activities, students‟ sustainability fair, and a book fair. Some course content will be available on-line. 2008 Undergraduate Curriculum Revision Working with the IARc Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the Department Chair, I drafted a proposal (later accepted by the department) to revise the undergraduate curriculum: reduce the number of hours from 142 to 128 no longer require IAR 501 (5

th Year Studio)

make IAR 202 (2nd

Year Studio) Writing Intensive (instead of IAR 501) merge IAR 431 (Lighting) with IAR 333 (Building Systems) merge IAR 112 & 122 (graphics courses) develop a capstone experience, the “IARc Experience,” a collection of 9 hours change the BS degree to a BFA Additional changes include eliminating vertical studios in the fall semester and adopting a system of themed studios which assures a breadth of design experience to each undergraduate student. 2007 IAR 332: Materials, Methods and Technologies in Interior Architecture This is an important course and instrumental regarding requirements for CIDA accreditation, yet the course often was taught by a different faculty member every year. I reorganized the course to emphasize the relationship between structure, structural materials, and finish materials, making this a very „hands-on‟ course for students. 2006 IAR 499: Spring Study Abroad I developed a variation of this course in Spring 2006 and guided (with Patrick Lucas) 27 students through Greece and Italy during Spring Break and the following week. 2003 IAR 499: Summer Study Abroad Although the residential study abroad programs in the department and at the university are well-developed, this course offers students the ability to travel in a structured manner across sites of important art and design in Europe.

Virginia Tech 2000 LAR 2984: VT Design Collaborative I was one of two faculty members in the VT Design Consortium to develop the one-credit course for Fall 2000 that accompanied the VTDCollaborative residential learning community (see immediately below). This 1-credit course included discussions of Alan Lightman‟s book (Einstein’s Dreams) and of his presentation on campus in October 2000; discussions of the collaborative work of Charles and Ray Eames; presentations from each design discipline on campus; sketching; journals; day-trip to Charlottesville to hear a landscape architect; and a culminating workshop with a theatre architect. 1999 VT Design Collaborative I am primary author of a proposal to Residential and Dining Programs to develop a residential learning community for first year students in design. With support from Ron Daniel, Associate Provost, and Terry Wildman, Director of the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, this proposal has been accepted and members of the VT Design Consortium in collaboration with Ed Spencer and his associates in Residential and Dining Programs, are preparing literature and facilities for entering design students, fall of 2000, to live together in Lee Hall. This living arrangement will provide design students an opportunity to experience a multi-disciplinary design-centered residential environment that is an extension of their studio experiences within their particular disciplines. 1998 UH 3004: VTDC Honors Studio As second author to Mitzi Vernon and on behalf of the VT Design Consortium (VTDC), this course was developed with Jack Dudley of the University Honors Program as a transdisciplinary studio with students from each of the 7 areas of design enrolled. Students worked in teams with the faculty representatives of the VTDC and members of the local community to create designs appropriate for residents at a facility similar to Warm Hearth. 1997 HIDM 3954: Study Abroad

Interior Design students participating in this summer study abroad program experienced design and native cultures in Switzerland, Italy, and France. Faculty and students from architecture were additional participants. HIDM 3124: Third Year Studio A revision of this course altered its focus to non-residential design and introduced discussions about design to draw attention to the dynamic nature of design and the reciprocal relationship between the environment and its occupants. 1996 HR 4984: Special Studies; Universal Design This course was developed with assistance from Eric Wiedegreen and Julia Beamish to further interior design and housing students' understanding of Universal Design while promoting the concept to students in other programs and to the local community. The course was endorsed by the Dean of the College of Human Resources with the intent that it may become a College Core course based on a concept and funded by the Universal Design Education Project. 1995 HIDM 5114: Advanced Interior Design Research This course was revised to a seminar format to expose graduate students to faculty expertise in theory and methods associated with housing and interior design. Although student evaluations were not completed for this course, anecdotal comments from the students have described this course as "one of the best [they've] had" and as "a good course".

1994 HIDM 1105 & 1106: Design Fundamentals I & II Eric Wiedegreen and I combined the exercises and projects that each had used in Three-Dimensional Design (HIDM 2124; taught by Wiedegreen) and Two-Dimensional Design (HIDM 1104; taught by Marshall-Baker) to create a series of first year design studios. The advantages of creating the new foundation courses (HIDM 1105, 1106; Design Fundamentals I and II) include providing the opportunity for beginning designers to work in 2- and 3-dimensions simultaneously, and making a first rather than second year review process possible for beginning interior design students. HIDM 1114: Design Appreciation This course introduces the various facets of design to a university community of many disciplines and was accepted into Area 6 of the University Core Curriculum for Fall semester 1995. The course is designed to engage students in design and cultural events, and may be the only formal instruction many students will ever receive about design. Although course enrollments have increased dramatically (e.g., Spring 1995 enrollment: 76; Fall 2000 enrollment: 269), students complete formal and informal writing assignments that engage them in the course material. 1993 HIDM 1104: Two-Dimensional Design As a result of a grant from the Universal Design Education Project sponsored by the Adaptive Environments Center in Boston, Massachusetts, this course was modified to include concepts of Universal Design, i.e., designing for people of all ages and abilities. 1992 HIDM 1104: Two-Dimensional Design This course was restructured to be exercise-driven within a studio environment. This approach not only provided the students with experience necessary for their projects, but also strengthened their presentation skills and styles.

Visit to Gottlieb and Pope-Leighey Houses (1998) I coordinated a trip to Fairfax for 20 students and faculty to see a house built by Lois Gottlieb, a residential designer, who was an apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright and had recently spoken of her work in a public presentation at Virginia Tech and also with students in my 3rd Year Studio. We also visited the Pope-Leighey house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Industry Tour (1993) I coordinated and participated in a 3-day/4-night Industry Tour for 40 juniors and sophomores through North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee to manufacturing plants, showrooms, and a facility under renovation. My responsibilities included arranging the tour of 11 facilities, transportation, meals, lodging. Exposure to all aspects of the interior design profession is particularly important for students in southwest Virginia whose opportunities to experience these types of facilities and industry is limited.
