Annexure B: Noteworthy work at COEP

As a Professor of Electrical Engineering:- Lead the team of 18 faculty members, motivated team members to upgrade the

qualifications, planned and erected new laboratories, established research facilities in the domain of electrical machines, designed 4 unique innovative, first-of-its-kind, experimental set ups to enrich the laboratory courses which have attracted the attention of elite institutes such as IITs. [Please see the annexure B-1.] Presently engaged in establishing Centre of Excellence in “Smart Renewable Energy Systems” at COEP in association with 5 industries. The proposal fetched the grants of Rs. 500 lakhs under TEQIP-phase II, through a competitive process at National level. Out of 117 plus proposals, our proposal ranked high and is selected for funding under TEQIP project. As Head of Electrical Engineering Department:-

Chaired the electrical engineering department for more than 5 years. In this tenure, a

total face lifting of the department was carried out with the help of faculty members and supporting staff. All laboratories were modernized, old equipment was written off, entire department was refurbished and student centric learning culture was established. Open access to the laboratories and facilities were established. The freedom and empowerment given by the institute was properly utilized to upgrade the department. The entire infrastructure was refurbished from class-rooms to rest rooms; from laboratories to faculty rooms, from seminar halls to pantry; from biometric systems to CCTV.

Total investments done during the tenure on infrastructure was about 400 lakhs.

Faculty members are encouraged to do the research, write research proposals, increase industry association, and increase the outreach with industry and society. The transformation at electrical engineering department is indicated in the annexure B2. As Dean, Academics:-

Institute has got academic autonomy in 2004. As the Dean Academics of the institute, a

successful, smooth changeover from university affiliated academics to self-designed and run, academics is carried out. Significant contributions are made in establishing the examination cell, framing the UG /PG rules, evaluation and grading schemes. Set a culture of deliberations and discussions on finalizing the academic issues. The sincere efforts put have earned the confidence of the stakeholders at the crucial juncture of academic changeover.

Inducted formal feedback system, Designed faculty empowerment schemes, Established closed linkages with IIT Bombay, Planned Professor Emeritus, Adjunct Faculty schemes and got those approved from the Board. The take-a-course-at-IITB was first-of-its-kind in the country, where in 18 faculty members daily travelled to IITB, took courses along with M.Tech students at IITB and wrote examinations and were graded by IITB. As Chief Rector, Hostels:-

With the team of 9 rectors, and the support from the institute, several changes at hostel premises such as refurbishment of blocks, networking of the premises, modernization of electrical systems, tree plantation, etc. were carried out to make the living comfortable. Proper cleaning services, and security services were hired. The problem of ragging was eliminated; the problem of “Parasites” was solved. The support is extended to financially challenged students. As a Chairman, Library Committee:-

A face lifting of the library is carried out. 25000 old and damaged books are written off, and new books are added to the library. Within the available space, academically conducive environment is established. Earn-while-Learn scheme designed and implemented to address shortage of manpower and extend the library hours. Carried out procurement to the tune of 100 lakhs, to upgrade the knowledge infrastructure. As procurement in charge, SPFU, Maharashtra:-

During the first phase of TEQIP program, successfully executed the responsibility of the

procurement in 17 participating institutes under the program. The total procurement during this phase was of Rs. 110 crores. I could establish the repo with all participating institutes, government officials, NPIU officials and the team work led to the timely completion of the project. The project execution, adherence to the procedures and norms was well appreciated by the NPIU and the World Bank. As Chairman, Electrical Works Committee:-

In last 5 years, played a major role in improving electrical systems at the institute. New substations are planned, and commissioned which will cater to the needs of the institute for next 40-50 years. Energy efficient practices are inducted. State-of-the-technology is brought in wherever possible. Electrical systems of all hostel blocks are changed. Primary distribution of institute campus is changed. In total 317 different works are executed amounting total 610 lakhs in view of improving electrical system infrastructure at the institute.
