(SPECT) imaging and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) techniques. My recent academic interests are the quantification of cerebral permeability in human and rat models of stroke and cerebral tumor using MRI contrast agents, measurement of cerebral blood flow, transfer rate, blood volume, mean transit time, arterial input function modeling, pharmacokinetic modeling, model averaging, adaptive models and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in DCE-MRI data analyses. I am also actively working on the outcome prediction of stroke infarction from acute DCE and non-DCE MR information in human using different statistical and analytical modeling. I am familiar with brain lateralization for Epileptic patients as well as Radiotherapy Treatment (RT) planning and shielding. Since 2009, I have been studying MR quantitative biomarkers of drug efficacy for RT and anti-angiogenesis drugs in breast cancer and brain tumor patients. I have technical expertise in applied mathematics and scientific applications programming and have developed, maintained, and documented NeuroPipes, a standard suite of reconstruction, post-processing, and filtering programs for MRI data acquired on different MR consoles/machines (7T and 3T).

Funded/Approved Research Projects (Ongoing/Completed)

R03 NS079982 (Bagher-Ebadian, Soltanian-Zadeh, Ewing, and Mitsias) 09/15/2013 – 09/14/2015 NIH - Prediction of Stroke Outcome from Early MRI Data Using Adaptive Models Role: Principle Investigator In this study, it is proposed to apply Adaptive Models such as Artificial Neural Network, Generalized Linear Model, Kohonen Multi-Parametric Self-Organizing Map and Inelastic Collision Model to acute MR data sets of human studies gathered from the Stroke Image Repository (STIR) database to predict tissue outcome at three month. This will allow the proposed techniques to be tested and refined, thus selecting a best early predictor of outcome in stroke. Once a predictor of untreated outcome is established, an examination of MRI changes will be conducted in both untreated and treated populations. This latter examination will allow the description of the connection of the proposed predictors to clinical measures to be refined. we will produce a surrogate MRI outcome measure that will be quickly available (essentially in real time) to robustly predict the outcome MRI image of stroke in the brain at the acute and subacute stages of stroke. This may allow the real-time assessment of treatment effects in acute and subacute stroke patients, thus fundamentally changing treatment paradigms. Nathanson (Award) Funding: (Bagher-Ebadian) 06/01/2012 – 12/31/2013

Role: Principle Investigator Study and identification of best biomarkers in Breast Cancer study Using Shutter-Speed Model and Standard Model in DCE-MRI. This study focuses on the applications of Standard and Shutter-Speed models for unbiased estimation of permeability parameters in breast cancer DCE-MRI studies to prevent and reduce the False-Positive fraction. Mentored Grant CA10437-01: (Bagher-Ebadian ) 01/01/08 – 12/08/2012 HFH - MRI Direct Estimate of 3T/7T-MR Contrast Agent Concentration Using Adaptive Systems Role: Principle - Investigator This work serves as a proof of principle and lends credence to the proposal that the method can be extended to other field strengths and MRI input sets associated with faster MRI sequences. It is our general aim to translate and extend this approach for estimating tissue CA concentration to human studies in a clinical 3T system. In order to do that, we will first train an ANN to estimate CA tissue concentration in an animal model of cerebral tumor.

STIR: (Bagher-Ebadian, Mitsiais, & Ewing) 10/01/2012 – 12/31/2014

Role: Principle Investigator Study of Time Invariant Predictor of Stroke Outcome Using Artificial Neural Networks This study has been approved and MR information of 186 patients has been released to our group for constructing an adaptive neural network for a time invariant prediction of the stroke outcome at different time points (acute and subacute).

R01 CA135329-01: (Ewing & Bagher-Ebadian) 04/01/09 – 03/31/14 NIH - MRI Biomarkers of Response in Cerebral Tumors Role: Co-Investigator This application will use magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents and MR detection to measure parameters of vascular physiology in cerebral tumors. In animal models of cerebral tumor these parameters, singly and in combination, will be assessed as predictors of response to antiangiogenic and vascular disrupting therapies. R03 NS061170 (Ewing & Bagher-Ebadian ) 07/01/07 – 06/30/09 NIH - Prediction of Stroke Outcome from Early MRI Data Using an Adaptive Neural Network Role: Co-Investigator To produce a surrogate MRI outcome measure that will be quickly available (essentially in real time) to predict the final results of stroke in the parenchyma of the brain, at the acute and subacute stages of stroke. This will allow the real-time assessment of treatment effects in acute and subacute stroke patients.
