TEACHING

2.1. TEACHING STATEMENT

Since I received my M.Sc. in Mathematics in 1993, I worked at three different universities/colleges. I taught about 20 different undergraduate courses (General Mathematics; Finite Mathematics for Finance; Pre-Calculus I & II; Calculus I, II & III; Applied Calculus; Linear Algebra; Abstract Algebra; Number Theory; Ordinary Differential Equations; General Topology; Euclidean Geometry; Probability Theory; Real Analysis I & II; Complex Analysis) and more than 10 different graduate courses (all at KFUPM) (Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Homological Algebra, Galois Theory, Advanced Topics in Algebra, Reading & Research).

The different types and levels of students registered in these courses established my conviction that the instructor has to adjust his methods and techniques of teaching according to the audience in the class, indeed without compromising the level of the offered course. Moreover, within the same class, different students have indeed different abilities, different studying habits and different attitudes. Therefore, a variety of teaching/learning methods should be used in and outside the classroom. I do believe in the modern philosophy of teaching which places the student, and not the instructor, at the center of the teaching/learning process. I use a variety of active learning strategies including a number of small projects even in the basic courses. Participation in such projects provides also a good opportunity for the involved students to improve the grades of their class work.

Since we are in the information era, I do believe in offering undergraduate courses as online courses in blended form: teaching in the class backed by suitable online material that is attractive especially to the young generations. Taking advantage of the emphasis that KFUPM puts on developing online courses, I was a member of teams which provided the scientific material for several online courses: Calculus I, II, III & ODEs. The online material offers a good opportunity for the students to revise the new concepts they were exposed to in the class, see more examples and solved problems and get the chance to solve problems step by step with some suitable hints. On the other hand, I do believe that an online course cannot replace the face-to-face lecture especially in Math courses. Many students, especially the ones with weak performance, still need big help from the instructor inside and outside the class.

As for the graduate courses, I believe that the students should play a more central role. Therefore, I consider weekly assignments and take-home-exams as suitable methods for evaluation and learning at the same time without having to completely replace the classical in-class exams. I do encourage graduate students to register in the so-called Reading & Research courses which provide them with the chance to get involved in research and be exposed, probably for the first time, to research papers and book. All four Reading & Research courses which I offered so far, involved one or more key research papers related to the main topic of the involved Ph.D. student. While teaching at KFUPM is restricted to English, I had the chance to work at colleges where the teaching language is Arabic. One of the main difficulties the students at such colleges face is the lack of sufficient good books in Arabic. I do believe that, even for students studying in English, more references in Arabic should be available. Therefore, I was involved in translating a book on ODEs to Arabic. I plan also to get more involved in translating/authoring more books to/in Arabic.

RESEARCH

4.1. RESEARCH INTERESTS My main research area is Associative Algebra (MSC: 16) in general and Module Theory in particular. I am also interested in Category Theory & Homological Algebra (MSC: 18) as a general framework. Since I moved to KFUPM in 2003, my scope of research became wider. On one hand, the excellent research facilities at KFUPM gave me the chance to explore new topics taking into consideration my big passion for research which was and remains the main motivation for my research. On the other hand, the Commutative Algebra Research Lab, founded by Prof. S. Kabbaj in 2004 and recognized formally in 2011 as the Commutative Algebra Research Group attracted me to some topics from Commutative Algebra (MSC: 13). I work on four main research lines:

• Coalgebras and Comodules; Hopf algebras. Rational pairings were introduced by J. Gómez-Torrecillas (Rev. Roumaine Math. Pures Appl. 43, 1998) and reinvestigated by Abuhlail, Gómez-Torrecillas and Lobillo (J. Algebra 240, 2001). These investigations lead to introducing the so called α-condition in my Ph.D. dissertation in 2001 (under Robert Wisbauer, University of Düsseldorf, Germany). This fair and easily stated condition attracted the attention of many reputable researchers. It enabled developing a very successful approach to study categories of comodules for corings (coalgebras) satisfying it as special Wisbauer categories of type σ[M]. This approach was highlighted in the celebrated book of Brzezinski and Wisbauer (Corings and Comodules, Cambridge Univ. Press, 2003) and more than 20 publications which cited my paper (Commun. Algebra 31, 2003). Another successful paper, which attracted about 20 citations so far, is related to Morita contexts and Galois extensions for corings (Lecture Notes in Pure and Appl. Math. 239, Marcel Dekker, New York, 2005). The α-condition played an important role in my papers on coalgebras and Hopf algebras. It enabled, in particular, a generalization of the celebrated Blattner-Montgomery & Koppinen duality theorems on crossed products. The results were published in [J. Algebra 288 (1), 2005].

• Commutative Rings. With S. Kabbaj and our joint Ph.D. student M. Jarrar [J. Pure Appl. Alg. 215

(10), 2011], we introduced and investigated the class of fqp-ring, a new class of Prüfer-like commutative rings over which every finitely generated ideal is quasi-projective. We also proved that this class of rings lies strictly between the classes of arithmetical and Gaussian rings. In a second paper with M. Jarrar [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 215 (8), 2011], a complete classification of tilting modules over almost perfect commutative domains was obtained.

• Zariski-like Topologies. While the notion of a prime ring is quite natural and fundamental for rings,

it is not so for corings. We investigated a dual notion for corings and comodules in two papers [Appl. Categ. Structures 14 (2006) & 16 (2008)]. After that, we moved to investigate several notions of (co)primeness for modules. While most papers related to these concepts are restricted to commutative base rings, our results work fine over general associative rings. Moreover, we established a new approach in which we study the interplay between the algebraic properties of the module under investigation and the topological properties of the obtained (dual) Zariski-like space. Recently, we suggested in a preprint with Ch. Lomp a way to unify such topologies using lattice theory. The main project is still in progress and involves a colleague and a Ph.D. student from KFUPM.

• Semirings and Semimodules. These are roughly speaking rings/ modules not necessarily with

subtraction. I noticed that, with few exceptions and despite their many applications in different aspects of Mathematics, theoretical physics and theoretical computer science, no systematic investigation of the category of semimodules over a semiring (in particular the category of commutative monoids) has been carried out so far. One reason for that is that such categories are not Puppe-exact and not homological (in some sense). This might explain why the theory of homological monoids is not well-developed in contrast to homological groups. After long

investigations, we managed to come up with a new notion of exact sequences of semimodules. This new notion enabled proving some restricted versions of some homological lemmas (e.g. the Five Lemma, the Snake Lemma). These in turn helped much in developing a theory of semicorings and semicomodules and Hopf semialgebras. The results were published in 2 papers [Commun. Algebra; 2 accepted papers] including one jointly written with my Ph.D. student N. Alsulaiman. On the other hand, investigations of Takahashi’s tensor-like product, with which such categories are surprisingly not monoidal, lead us to introducing a notion of semiunital semimonoidal categories and generalized notion of monads and comonads [Theory Appl. Categ. 28 (4), 2013].
