RESEARCH My research direction has extended from the two key areas of my PhD dissertation, which

concerns information technology and small business. Two main research themes emerged from this work consisting of e-marketing and entrepreneurship. My later research direction progressed to include mobile phone marketing (m-marketing) and social marketing. All my

grants, publications and research supervision relate specifically to these particular areas of my expertise. In view of the importance of teaching in my profession, I also publish in the education field.

E-marketing/m-marketing and social marketing. Currently, I am involved in collaborative projects examining the social, psychological and economic impacts of mobile digital

technology on consumers. Specific research projects include an ARC Discovery Grant examining Young women’s harmful alcohol consumption: a social marketing prevention strategy and an ARC Linkage grant focusing on a multidisciplinary assessment of the

mental health outcomes of cyber-participation. Broader research projects include mobile phone marketing, m-gambling, emotions related to mobile phone consumption, youth well-being, and consumer responses to marketing strategies in the m-marketing context. My research has also been published in quality journals such as the Journal of Advertising Research, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Services Marketing,

Computing.

Entrepreneurship and small business. My research focuses on factors affecting

entrepreneurial intentions and social entrepreneurship in technology diffusion. As a small business researcher, I have specifically targeted the services industry and gained access to a large number of Australian firms. My research has been published in International

Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Small Enterprise Research, and conference proceeding for Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand and International Council of Small Business.

TEACHING Changes in delivery of tertiary education from traditional lecturing mode to flexible, multi-

media mode provided me with opportunities to build new skills in teaching and curriculum development. As an experienced lecturer and qualified educationalist, I aim to provide high quality, innovative and meaningful learning experiences for both my coursework and

Page 17: CURRICULUM VITAE JUDY CAROL DRENNAN · Queensland University of Technology ... Kavanagh D, Drennan J, Young R, Shochet I, Tjondronegero D, Johnson D, Zelenko, ... design and implementation

17

research students. To present an overview of my efforts to achieve these aims, I have set

out my teaching accomplishments and philosophy below: Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy has developed from my studies in education and my experiences in tertiary institutions both overseas and in Australia. I strongly believe that variety of

teaching methods, recognition of individual differences, and a genuine interest in students’ learning lead to enthusiastic and motivated students. Consequently, I put serious effort into preparation, not only of the material itself, but the method of providing or facilitating this

knowledge. I also attend workshops to gather up-to-date knowledge of the latest technologies and educational concepts, which assist me to consider and implement new teaching and assessment methods for improved student learning.

Equally important is the sharing of ideas with other lecturers, tutors and students. Unit teams, tutors’ meetings and discussions with fellow educators are essential for developing

new ideas while ensuring consistency in delivery of units. During my years of teaching, I have demonstrated an ability to create innovative learning experiences for students with the development of an interactive web site, application of video-conferencing technology,

use of web site assessment, team teaching and the writing of diverse course programs. I have also been diligent in working closely with research students to complete their

Doctoral, Masters and Honours theses with excellent examination results, including a gold medal for best PhD dissertation, and publication of their work in journals and conference proceedings. I have an excellent working relationship with all my completed PhD students,

and two are now members of the AMPR academic staff. The following section provides details of my research supervision completions and current students:

My sustained excellence in teaching can be validated by teaching awards from two different universities and by my teaching evaluations. My first award was presented in 1995 by the Bowater School of Management and Marketing at Deakin University for

Teaching Excellence, which was won for innovation in developing off-campus material for Organizational Theory. The second recognition for teaching was a Teaching Innovation Award presented in 2000 by the School of Management at the University of Queensland for

21

my work in developing and presenting interactive online material for the Introduction to

Marketing and Internet Marketing courses with over 2000 students over five campuses in both flexible and traditional delivery.

My teaching evaluations by students have been generally high with the following ratings over three types of courses:

Large undergraduate class – traditional lecture format:

Services Marketing (QUT): 4.16/5 Marketing Communications (UQ): 4.3/5 UQ Introduction to Marketing (UQ): 4.3/5, 3.9/5, 3.9/5

Small undergraduate classes – flexible delivery format: Internet Marketing (UQ): 4.8 and 4.4/5; 4.6, 4.0, 4.1 and 4.3/5 Introduction to Marketing (UQ): 6/7, 6/7

Postgraduate MBA classes – lecture and seminar format Small Business Management (UQ): 5.8/7

Teaching Innovation and Course Development For two years, I was involved in developing flexible delivery material for a new degree, Bachelor of Business (Communications), at UQ. In addition to the introductory marketing subject, I have also been responsible for developing Marketing on the Internet. As one of

the first lecturers in Internet Marketing in Queensland, I have assisted other Universities in developing their Internet courses. At QUT, I have been involved in developing CRA in the

Marketing area. A summary of some of my teaching innovations and course development are set out below:

2005-2008 Services Marketing Writing of new tutorial material to encourage students to

undertake field research in the services area, present creative and original

workshops, and link lecture material with tutorials more effectively. Involved with development of CRA for this unit. Inclusion of industry guest lecturers to provide a real world viewpoint and possibilities for work experience. One

outcome was that two students from Services Marketing won a competition to work with marketing firm on a campaign.

1999-2003 Internet Marketing Development and implementation of new undergraduate and MBA courses using flexible online learning. In 2003, won a $5000 teaching grant for further course development. Successfully completed

online delivery course for Internet Marketing. 1999-2001 Introduction to Marketing Development and implementation of flexible online

learning in the undergraduate program to large classes. I received an award for Teaching Innovation from the School of Management, UQ Business School, 2000 for these innovations. In 2003, won a $6000 teaching grant to

develop innovative online case study. Successfully completed online case study and based on marketing department in the non-alcoholic beverage industry.

ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

I have an extensive track record of academic and professional leadership within the University sector and professional associations. My sustained roles in chairing research and teaching committees have resulted in measurable successes and disseminated

output. As an active committee member, I have been involved in working parties to develop Faculty and School policies and strategies. I have also written submissions and presented cases on behalf of these committees for consideration by the Faculty and University

Executive Boards. In addition, I have sat on selection panels at three different Universities ranging from Lecturer level to Head of School level. At QUT, I completed the 2006 Leading in Your Career course, and have chaired PhD confirmation panels, Dean’s Honours

Program (Marketing students) selection panels and AMPR research seminars. The following is a summary of my academic/professional leadership and community engagement:

2008 Services Innovation Research Program Leader. Development and
