Volunteer Activities: Books Behind Bars, Fundraising and book donation program for prison libraries through Rutgers Foundation. In 2004, Dr. Wolff started the Books Behind Bars initiative. Books Behind Bars Bookclub, Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women and New Jersey State Prison. (2004 to 2017). This program was started by Dr. Wolff to encourage reading and the building of community. She purchased books for and led three chapters of the book club, with an average of 30 women reading and discussing fiction and non-fiction books with themes of recovery, inspiration, self-construction and empowerment, and overcoming difficulties to achieve success. The book club chapter at Garden State Youth Facility (2009 to 2017) included 10 men and met weekly. They read 67 books together: 34 fiction and 33 non-fiction books. Dr. Wolff received a Russell Berrie Award for Making a Difference in 2008 and the Centennial Award from the Princeton YMCA for her work with Books Behind Bars, and was a semi-finalist for the American Federation of Teacher’s Everyday Hero Award in the Higher Education category for developing and implementing programs that encourage incarcerated women to focus on healing their minds and bodies as they prepare to reenter society and live productive lives. Dr. Wolff volunteers 12 hours on weekends at the State Correctional Institution: Graterford. She meets individually with men struggling with trauma and guilt and leads yoga, mindfulness, drum, and aerobics programs there. In November 2017, she initiated an annual volunteer recognition event for residents to honor their “good work.” The event, organized in collaboration with the residents, features the organizations (e.g., hospice, Veterans, Lifer) and individuals that serve the community (inside and out) through their acts of distinguished and non-compensated service. Dr. Wolff received the Rutgers College Class of ’62 Presidential Public Service Award in 2015 for her service to people who are incarcerated. Her application (assembled by a colleague) included over 20 letters from colleagues, correctional executives, and residents of prisons in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The honorarium associated with the award was doubled in honor of her unstinting commitment to vulnerable (and often-forgotten) populations. She is using the honorarium to fund the volunteer recognition event at Graterford in November.

Ongoing Contracts
