My main interest is in rangeland vegetation ecology and in developing management strategies for the sustainable utilization of rangelands by producers that can also conserve or restore the natural resource base. My work in Texas centered on woody plants such as mesquite and juniper that have increased in density and distribution on Southern Great Plains (SGP) grasslands and rangelands and have had the overall effect of reducing grass species diversity and production and increasing soil erosion. My specific goals were to:
• Quantify the processes associated with woody plant expansion on SGP rangelands • Quantify the competitive interactions between woody plants and grasses • Determine the most sustainable management options for mitigating the negative effects of
woody plant invasions • Determine potential of rangeland woody plants for bioenergy uses as a means of rangeland
restoration
The first goal focuses on the ecology of woody plant invasion and includes documenting the rates of invasion of key species such as mesquite and juniper, and determining the mechanisms by which they have successfully invaded into grasslands. Studies have been conducted concerning mesquite water use patterns and photosynthesis, mesquite and juniper seasonal leaf area patterns and leaf area indices, mesquite root growth in response to different soil moisture regimes, mesquite seedling ecology and the effects of animals as distributers of mesquite seeds and effects of grass biomass on mesquite seedling emergence and survival. Collaborations have been with Drs. Steve Archer, Bill Pinchak, Tom Boutton, Pete Jacoby, Bill Dugas, Greg Asner, Keith Owens, Ron Sosebee Rod Heitschmidt, Jeff Slosser and Nithya Rajan.
The second goal involves measuring herbaceous growth and species composition responses to different densities and growth forms of mesquite and juniper species. Collaborations have been with Drs. Bill Pinchak, Richard Teague, Tom Boutton, Mike Castellano and Tim Steffens.
The third goal includes research into the use of prescribed fire and aerial applied herbicides for reducing woody plant density and/or canopy size, or manipulating canopy shapes of certain species to achieve desired management effects. Prescribed fire research has compared effects of seasonal fires on brush, grasses, soil carbon and CO2 flux. Herbicide research has determined effects on target and non-target species and wildlife habitat. Collaborations have been with Drs. Richard Teague, Pete Jacoby, Tom Boutton, Harold Wiedemann, Bill Dugas and Charles Hart.
The fourth goal involves quantifying pasture-scale mesquite and juniper biomass and developing biomass harvesting and conversion technologies. This has included development of biomass prediction models, use of remote sensing to quantify woody biomass at pasture scales, harvesting trials, gasification and torrefaction of mesquite and juniper wood chips and development of

bioenergy economic models for rangeland woody plants. Collaborations have been with Drs. Soren Popescu, Ben Wu, Kalyan Annamalai, Travis Whitney, John Walker, Srini Ale, Seong Park and Tong Wang.

A. Comments – My appointment at Texas A&M AgriLife in Vernon was 100% research but from 2011 to 2015 I had the opportunity to teach, as an Adjunct Instructor, the Introduction to Biology class at Vernon College, a 2-year community college in Vernon, TX. This activity allowed me to interact with undergraduate students and also fulfilled a desire on my part to introduce students with minimal exposure to science courses in high school to science in general as well as the specifics of biology. The Fall semester (Biol-1406) covered biological molecules, cells, photosynthesis and respiration, DNA and RNA, genetics, the scientific method and evolution. The spring semester (Biol-1407) covered taxonomy and classification, animal organ systems, plant anatomy, population growth and basics of ecology. I also have served as Graduate Advisory Committee co-chair (7) or member (4) for 11 graduate students (6 PhD; 5 MS).
