22. Particulars of Doctoral work: The Doctoral work entitled "Geotechnical study and environmental appraisal of a water-resource development project in Kumaun Himalaya, U.P." embodies field geotechnical investigations of Jamrani dam located in Kumaun Himalaya. Particularly the work encompasses an evaluation of the dam foundation, abutment stability analyses, reservoir competency studies and sedimentation problems of the catchment in addition to the environmental implications of the project. The foundation evaluation study includes 3-D logging of drifts, logging of drill holes and interpretation of water pressure tests. The slope stability analyses of the abutments involve calculation of factor of safety for the unstable wedges so as to adopt suitable foundation treatments. The limitations on the values obtained through laboratory and in-situ tests have been analysed. Sediment yield analyses, stability and water tightness studies form part of reservoir competency investigations. A logical attempt to prognosticate the extent of reservoir induced seismicity due to water impoundment is made based on geo-seismological environment of the area. Environmental impacts including the socio-economic impacts due to the dam construction have proved beyond doubt that the dam construction is more of necessity for the economic development of the water-starved Nainital-Bhabar region. 23. Nominations: 1. Nominated to the Technical Advisory Committee of Bansagar Canal project as a member with effect from January 03. The other members of the committee are Prof. Bharat Singh, Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Roorkee, Prof. Gopal Ranjan, Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Roorkee and Dr. Swami Saran, Rtd. Nominated as a member of Project Implementation and Monitoring Committee (PIMC) of Mission Mode Project of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi on `Landslide hazard mitigation to assess, minimize and mitigate landslide problems in Uttranchal State. 5. Nominated as a member of PIMC of Indo-Norwegian project on `Institutional support and human resource development in applied research for assessment, prevention, mitigation and early warning system of tsunami and landslides in India’ of DST, Government of India, New Delhi vide office memorandum No. ES/11/092/03 dated 13.04.05 24. CONTRIBUTIONS THROUGH RESEARCH, TEACHING AND CONSULTANCY

My major field of specialisation - `Engineering Geology' is a fast emerging, field-oriented subject. In India, though more than 3000 crores of rupees are invested annually in river valley and other projects, the research outputs related to Engineering Geology of these projects are meagre. Since Engineering Geology is a largely field oriented subject, it is being practised mostly by the Geological Survey of India. Though this field has an enormous employment potential, It is being taught only in few Indian Universities as a full course. I have been teaching this course since 1988 in addition to active research and consultancy in this field. Presently four subjects related to this field are being taught to the students, namely Engineering Geology, Advance Engineering Geology, Soil & rock Mechanics and Geotechnical investigations. More contributions in research, consultancy and teaching in Engineering Geology are outlined below: 1. Since my field of specialisation is a multi-disciplinary one, I have been teaching Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Investigations to the students of M.Tech and M.Sc (Applied Geology), M.E. (Rock Mechanics), M.E. (Water Resources) and B.E.(Civil). In addition, I also taught subjects like Economic Geology, Mining Geology and Hydrogeology in the University of Asmara (Certificate attached). 2. My previous research and field experiences in GSI (11 Years) helped me to teach the subject very effectively and to get involved successfully in research and consultancy investigations. Till now, six scholars have completed their Ph.D. Presently four scholars are doing research in Engineering Geology under my guidance. So far I have supervised 52 Nos of M.Tech/ME/M.Sc/P.G.Dip Dissertations in the Departments of Earth Sciences, WRDTC and Civil Engineering. 3. Since my specialisation has practical utility for implementation of Engineering projects, I have completed 75 major consultancy projects so far and 3 in progress. This is an achievement in the sense that I have completed the maximum number of consultancy projects in the Department. This can be attributed primarily to my past research/field experiences. 4. I have 26 professional reports related to my works in GSI, six technical reports related sponsored research completion and more than 100 consultancy reports in IIT, Roorkee. 5. After joining IIT, Roorkee, I have published research papers as indicated below - in International Journals 9+1 (Submitted for publication), in National Journals 22+2 (Accepted for publication), In International Conferences 24 and in National Conferences 33. 6. I have devised a new technique based on empirical approach for landslide hazard zonation mapping, which has been adopted as an I:S Code [Code NO. IS 14496 (Part-2):1998]. Further another important technique developed by me called `Modified SMR method' which is used for cut slope evaluation, has also been accepted as an I:S Code [Code No. IS 13365 (Part-3) 1997]. Further I have recently developed another new technique on risk mapping of landslides, which has been published in International journals. An I:S code on this is already under preparation. Another I.S code is under consideration based on a technique called Meso-zonation of landslide hazard, developed by me 7. I have authored a bokk entitled `Field Manual for landslide investigations’ published by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. I am one of the co-authors of the book entitled `Handbook of Mountain Risk Engineering', published by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu, Nepal. In addition I, with Prof. S. Saran, edited a book on `Design practices in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering'. Further as a Principal Author, I contributed one Chapter each in two important books namely a) Perspectives of Mountain Risk Engineering in Himalayan region and b) Landslide hazard mitigation in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. I am one of the authors of the special publication on `Landslides and Sustainable Development in Mountainous Regions’ under Co-ordinated National Programme on Landslides of DST 7. I, as the Principal Investigator, successfully completed a Rs.13.45 Lac research project sponsored by DST on `Landslide Hazard Zonation (LHZ) mapping’ in July, 1996, which is also an emerging field and is more popular around the world. Recently I had completed a Rs.6.0 lac DST sponsored research project on `Landslide risk assessment (LRA) mapping’ in September, 1998. I also completed a Rs. 1.2 lac pre-

project proposal supported by DST, Govt. of India, on ‘‘Evaluation of stability of slopes for identifying suitable remedial measures for a failed hill slope along Dehradun-Mussoorie road and a Pre-project proposal for carrying out stability studies in Mohund-Dehradun area, Uttranchal’. 6. Recently, I completed two major research projects – one supported by MHRD and DST, Govt of India. The MHRD project entitled `Detailed evaluation of Narayanbagar landslide, in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand and evaluation of cut slopes along Karnaprayag – Gowaldam road for future widening of the road’ had an outlay of Rs. 9 lacs and was completed in September 2007. The other DST supported project on `Detailed evaluation of a landslide and instrumental slope monitoring using precision leveling in Harmaony, Garhwal Himalaya, Uttranchal and slope stability evaluation of cut slopes along the road’ had an overall outlay of Rs. 18.35 lacs. Both the projects were started in May, 2004 and was completed in June 2008. With a total of 32 years of experience, consisting of 11 years of professional research and 21 years of teaching, I have a blend of academic, research, consultancy & field experiences in Himalayan and other terrains of India in addition to administrative experience.
