Subjects of Research

I started my research activity in Torino in 1991, under the tutoring ofprof. A. Bottino and in collaboration with the other members of his researchgroup, working on the calculation of relic abundance and direct and indirectdetection rates of particle dark matter.

During 1992 I attended the Annual Course of “Advanced Studies in Nu-clear and Subnuclear Physics and Astrophysics” at the University of Torino.

After one year of military draft, in 1994 I started a Ph.D. program atthe University of Genoa that ended at the beginning of 1997, under the jointtutoring of Prof. G. Ridolfi and prof. A. Bottino. During my stay in GenoaI concentrated on Supersymmetric model building, developing programs forthe calculation of the supersymmetric particle spectrum and neutralino detec-tion signals in various theoretical schemes like Supergravity–inspired modelsand more phenomenological ones.

Afterwords I continued my research activity from the end of 1997 to thebeginning of 2000 at the Laboratory of Nuclear Physics of the University ofSaragossa (Spain) under the supervision of Prof. A. Morales. In this periodI continued my theoretical activity on WIMP direct detection, while at thesame time I worked also on axion phenomenology and worked directly in theexperimental activity of the underground laboratory of Canfranc, maintainedby the University of Saragossa (taking part to data analysis and the perfor-mance of Montecarlo simulations). At the same time I continued my col-laboration on supersymmetric dark matter phenomenology with the TorinoGroup of prof. Bottino.

After my return to Torino in the spring of 2000 I have continued myactivity on dark matter detection, neutralino phenomenology and galaxydynamics.

Between november 2004 and october 2008 I have worked in the KoreaInstitute of Advanced Study (KIAS) in Seoul, with the position of AssistantProfessor, where I have continued my research on neutralino phenomenol-ogy and have started a new line of investigation on thermal leptogenesis incollaboration with Eung Jin Chun (KIAS).

Starting from november 2008 I have moved to Seoul National University

(SNU) with the position of associate professor, and from september 2008 Ihave started teaching particle physics and Cosmology for graduate students.

My main research activity can be summarized as follows:

• Neutralino relic abundance. I have worked in the calculation of thepresent–day dark matter density. This includes the evaluation of theneutralino annihilation cross section, taking into account all the possi-ble kinematically final states, and the calculation of its thermal aver-age in the early Universe, including resonance and thresholds effects. Ihave also worked in the field of non–standard cosmological scenarios, like “low–reheating temperature” models. Recently, I have calculatedthe relic density of the neutralino in models without gaugino unifica-tion, improving previous results on the cosmological lower bound onthe neutralino mass.

• Neutralino direct detection. Neutralino and WIMP direct detectionconsists in the measurements of the recoil energy deposited in low–background underground detectors by dark matter particles scatteringelastically off target nuclei. Many experimental direct searches are un-der way, one of which, the DAMA experiment, has detected an annualmodulation feature in the data which, as proven for the first time in aseries of publications by the Torino group and myself, can be compat-ible to a neutralino signal. The calculation of expected signal includesthe evaluation of the neutralino nucleus elastic cross section (relatedaspects are susy modeling, nuclear form factors, hadronic matrix ele-ments and energy quenching factors) and a convolution on the WIMPvelocity distribution in the Galaxy (see related item).

• Neutralino indirect detection: neutrino fluxes from the Earth and theSun. The neutralino annihilation rate is increased whenever their den-sity is is enhanced. The density build-up produced by gravitationalWIMP capture in celestial bodies like the Earth or the Sun is expectedto lead to a flux of high energy neutrinos, the only final states whichare not stopped inside. These neutrinos are in principle measurable byCerenkov underground detectors which can reveal the up-going muonsproduced by the neutrino conversion in the rock underneath the labo-ratory. Evaluation of these signals includes a calculation of the capturerate of neutralinos in the celestial body (convoluted over their velocity

distribution), calculation of neutralino annihilation cross section and ofthe balance between capture and annihilation; calculation of the neu-trino contribution from all final states and of neutrino conversion intomuons.

• Dark Dark matter and solar physics. I have studied the possible linksbetween the issue of WIMP capture in the Sun and the constraintswhich can be derived from solar physics, showing in particular thatno constraints can be derived at present from helioseismology and 8B

neutrinos for WIMPs with mass above 30 GeV.

• Axion phenomenology. Axions may be detected through their couplingwith two photons. This coupling leads to the conversion of axions intophotons when they cross a magnetic field. The inverse process, i.e. theconversion of photons into axions in an electro–magnetic background,is expected to take place in the interior of stars, leading so to an al-ternative mechanism to their energy emission that can have dramaticeffects on the star lifetime and luminosity. Axions produced in theSun with this mechanism and compatible to the latest, strongest helio–seismologic limits can in principle be detected by making use of crystaldetectors of the same type as those used in direct WIMP searches anddouble–beta decay. Axions can pass in the proximity of the atomicnuclei of the crystal where the intense electric field can trigger theirconversion into photons. In the process detectable x–rays of a few keVare generated in the crystal. Depending on the direction of the in-coming axion flux with respect to the planes of the crystal lattice, acoherent effect can be produced when the Bragg condition is fulfilled, leading so to a strong enhancement of the signal. A correlation of theexpected count–rate with the position of the Sun in the sky is a distinc-tive signature of the axion which can be used, at the least, to improvethe signal/background ratio.

In particular, I have worked in the analytical calculation of expectedrates for this process and developed a code used both for data analysisand phenomenological studies, taking part to the data analysis of twoexperiments, COSME and DAMA. The analysis of the data of DAMAlead to the publication of the most stringent laboratory limit on theaxion–photon coupling in the highest range of the allowed axion mass.

• Dark halo velocity distribution. All expected signals for WIMP searchesstrongly depend on the velocity distribution function of WIMPs andtheir density in the halo. The isothermal sphere is the usual assump-tion, but many departures from this simplifying model are possible(including effects due to different density profiles, anisotropy of the ve-locity dispersion tensor, flatness, triaxiality or corotation of the halo)which may lead to significant changes of predictions. In particular Iworked in a comprehensive study where the effect of the uncertaintyof the velocity distribution function is included in the analysis of theDAMA annual modulation data. Recently, I have shown how the latestlimits from dark matter searches on light neutralinos (CDMS, Edel-weiss, ZEPLIN) are strongly dependent on the uncertainties of thevelocity distribution, and cannot conservatively rule out models withneutralino masses below 50 GeV.

• Supersymmetry model–building. Since the more general pattern of su-persymmetry breaking may be parametrized in term of more then 100parameters, neutralino phenomenology is usually studied by adoptingdifferent scenarios. I studied in detail and developed computer pro-grams to calculate some of these scenarios. The more constrainedone is the Supergravity–inspired (SUGRA) model, where particularboundary conditions are adopted for soft breaking terms (i.e. the di-mensional parameters of the susy–breaking lagrangian that do not in-troduce quadratic divergences in the model) at the Grand Unification(GUT) scale. Weak–scale phenomenology is then obtained by runningRenormalization Group Equation (RGE). In these models the Electro-Weak (EW) symmetry is broken radiatively. In this kind of modelsthe calculation of the susy particle spectrum include the evaluation ofall 1–loop corrections, in order to fix the boundary conditions of theRGEs, and the numerical solution of coupled RGE’s for all couplingsand soft breaking terms. I have also worked in the study of alternativescenarios, where SUGRA boundary conditions are relaxed. RecentlyI have calculated the cosmological lower limit of the neutralino massin models without gaugino unification, improving previous results. Ihave also analyzed phenomenological models where all physical param-eters are directly defined at the EW scale with the smaller number oftheoretical assumptions.

• Implications on the neutralino relic abundance and on dark mattersearches of accelerator measurements. I have developed codes to im-plement the calculation of susy corrections to FCNC effects like theb → sγ decay, the evaluation of the susy contribution to the anomalousmagnetic moment of the muon, the evaluation of detection rates of susyHiggs bosons at LEP, and in general the impact of updated acceleratorbounds on the couplings and masses of supersymmetric particles.

• Experimental aspects of Dark Matter searches. As a phenomenologistin Astroparticle physics I have taken advantage of a close and fruitfulcollaboration with many experimentalists. In particular I have been amember of several experimental Collaborations such as IGEX (double-beta decay), Rosebud (direct Dark Matter searches) and CAST (searchof solar axions). This allowed me to learn important aspects usefulto bridge the gap between abstract theoretical models and realisticexperimental predictions. Moreover, I have developed some skills di-rectly related to experimental dark matter searches, in particular indata analysis and background study (from radioactive contaminationsand cosmogenics).

• Leptogenesis in Higgs triplet Model The type–II see-saw mechanism, through which a Higgs triplet can generate the neutrino masses via itsleptor-number–violating interaction to leptons, is particularly predic-tive since its phenomenology depends only on one matrix of Yukawacouplings. Moreover, the same couplings mediate lepton-number-violating decays of the same triplet in the early Universe. In pres-ence of a suitable source of CP violation, which may be provided bysoft SUSY-breaking terms in the supersymmetric version of the model, these decays may generate a lepton asymmetry, that can be convertedto a baryon asymmetry by sphaleron interactions and explain the preva-lence of matter over antimatter in the present Universe. This modelwas introduced and discussed in the literature for a very wide range ofthe triplet mass. However, I have contributed to show that, in orderto work properly, this mechanism needs a particularly light mass forthe triplet, of order of a few TeV, due to the gauge interactions thatkeep the triplet in thermal equilibrium with the plasma until late times. This scenario would open up interesting possibilities of testing neutrino

physics at future accelerators.

• Leptogenesis and Kination I have analysed how the hypothesis of ki-nation is compatible with leptogenesis. The Dark Energy driving theexpansion rate of the Universe today could be generated by the evo-lution of a quintessence field. In this case the quintessence field couldhave passed through a period when its energy was dominated by itskinetic term. During this epoch, called kination, the expansion rate ofthe Universe was much faster than in the standard radiation–dominatedscenario. The possibility of kination is not constrained by observationas long as it happens before nucleosynthesys, and modifies predictionsfor the relic abundance of the Dark Matter in a significant way, al-lowing in particular for much higher signals for Dark Matter detectionthan in the standard case. This scenario has also been discussed inthe context of inflationary models. I have analysed how the hypoth-esis of kination is compatible with leptogenesis in an MSSM scenariowhere the lepton asymmetry in the Universe is produced by the decayof right–handed heavy (s)neutrinos (type–I see-saw), proving that, de-pending on the temperature T

rwhen kination and radiation provide

the same contribution to the energy density of the Universe, leptoge-nesis can proceed in very different different scenarios, from strong tosuper–weak wash–out. Typically, the efficiency of leptogenesis is lowerthan in the standard case, although some exceptions are possible whenit can be even higher. However, allowing for resonant CP violation oforder one, successful leptogenesis can always be achieved, even in theless favourable situations. We also found that, in spite of the dramaticincrease in the expantion rate of the Universe, both gauge interactions, allowing thermalization of the plasma after reheating, and sphaleroninteractions, allowing for the conversion of the lepton asymmetry tothe baryon asymmetry observed today, are fast enough to be effective.

In addition to my scientific activity, I have developed technical knowl-edge of computers. In particular I have worked in the development of com-plex codes for the calculation of neutralino and axion phenomenology. Mytechnical computer skills include:

• Operating systems: Linux, Windows, VMS

Research Interests and Future Plans

My research interests include:

• Particle candidates for dark matter.

• Calculation of direct and indirect WIMP signals.

• Galaxy models and galactic dynamics.

• Supersymmetry model–building.

• Axion phenomenology.

• Thermal leptogenesis.

My future plans include:

• Calculation of WIMP direct and indirect detection signals making useof the latest results on the WIMP velocity distribution coming from an-alytical models and numerical simulations on galaxy formation. Studyof directional effects in direct detection signals. Development of a codefor the reconstruction of the velocity distribution function from thedata of a detector sensitive to the incoming direction of WIMPs.

• Extension of supersymmetry model building to scenarios suggested bythe latest theoretical developments. A possible example is given bymodels where supersymmetry breaking is induced by string theory or D-branes. In some of these models the GUT scale may be much lower thanusually assumed, implying departures from the usual phenomenology.Another research subject I am interested in is studying the effect of CPviolation on neutralino phenomenology.
