EVALUATION FIELDS
1. Scientific Activity
My research activities address physical phenomena associated with natural and technological risks, both
accidental and persistent, with a focus on the dynamics of environmental flows. In particular, his studies deal
with pollutant dispersion in the urban atmosphere, the propagation of hot smokes in free and confined
environments, the ventilation of road tunnel in case of fire, the characterization of atmospheric dispersion of
toxic and flammable substances, the transfer within the environment and food chain of dioxin and other
persistent organic pollutants. In what follows are presented some of the main results achieved during my
research activity. The Complete list of all the significant publications is attached to the end of the
Curriculum.
1.1 Street Canyon Ventilation
The objective of the study was to understand the mechanisms that drive the turbulent transfer of
pollutant between the streets and the overlying atmosphere, i.e. the ventilation of the canyon. The
experimental results (Hot-wire Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and Flame Ionisation
Detection) revealed new aspects of the turbulent pollutant transfer mechanisms which allowed us to
define their dependence on the key governing parameters, namely, the canyon geometry and canyon wall
roughness. Particular attention was devoted to determine the influence of the intensity and structure of
the atmospheric turbulence on the ventilation of the canyon. Experimental results pointed out that that
the external turbulence has a direct influence on the flow and dispersion within the canyon and hence on
the whole turbulence transfer between the canyon and the atmosphere (Salizzoni et al., 2009, Salizzoni et
al. 2011).
1.2 Pollutant atmospheric dispersion modelling
The research on atmospheric pollutant dispersion has led to improvements of the urban pollutant
dispersion model (SIRANE) developed at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. My contribution to the
development of the model concerned three aspects:
the improvement of the mass-exchange parameterisation implemented in the code (Soulhac et
al.,2008; Soulhac et al., 2009; Soulhac et al, 2011);
The validation of the code with wind tunnel experiments (Garbero et al, 2010; Ben Salem et al.,
2015);
The application of the model to real cases and its calibration against field data in several
European cities (Soulhac et al, 2012).
I was also involved in the application of the model to a district in London with the University of Surrey,
part of the DAPPLE (Dispersion of Air Pollution and its Penetration in the Local Environment,
www.dapple.org.uk) project (Carpinteri et al., 2012).
1.3 Buoyant plumes dynamics
At the moment, my effort is focusing on the study of thermal plumes, which develop within a closed
space (Ezzamel, Salizzoni and Hunt, 2015). The transients associated with the release of buoyant fluid
into an enclosed environment are of crucial importance in many areas of engineering concerning the
natural )ventilation of buildings and the risk assessment in confined spaces, such as rail and road tunnels,
buildings and underground stations. The primary aim of this research, which is led in collaboration with
the group of G.R. Hunt at the University of Cambridge, is to enhance understanding of turbulent
buoyancy-driven flows above area sources. Experimental measurements of velocity and measuraments
on freely propagating, turbulent, steady thermal air plumes allowed us to analyse the local self-
preserving characteristics of the mean flow and to estimate the dependence with height of the plume
Richardson number. In addition, we analysed the similarity of one-point and two-point second-order
velocity statistics, and we discuss the role of the Richardson number on the vertical development of the
bulk dynamical parameters of the plume, namely, the turbulent viscosity, the turbulent Prandtl number
and the entrainment coefficient. Comparison with previous experimental results and with estimates of
the entrainment coefficient based on the mean kinetic energy budget allow us to conclude on the
influence of the Richardson number on the entrainment process and to explain possible physical reasons
for the high scatter in estimates of in the literature.
