some nice pet animals … a dear l i t t le dog … and a Persian cat .

Tom - No, my dear. Marg. - Well, perhaps not a dog and a cat . They would f ight - and

both would be unhappy. So, e i ther a dog or a cat. We must decide.

Tom - I have a lready decided. I can assure you that there wi l l be

neither a dog nor a cat in my house. Marg. - But i t wi l l be my house too! Oh!…why must you a lways

disagree with me? You know how much I love animals! Tom - Yes, I know, dear. And i f I were a mil l ionaire I would buy

you a whole Zoo - just for you! … a l ion, a t iger, an elephant, some monkeys -

I th ink that one of the f i rst words I learnt as a chi ld was “keep”. And with the passing of t ime, I have learnt al l i ts di f ferent meanings.

When I was a chi ld , my parents kept tel l ing me, “Keep

quiet ! ” and “Keep st i l l ” , so many t imes a day that I thought that “keep” was one of my names.

When I was a l i t t le boy my parents kept using this magic

word “keep” more and more. They began saying to me almost every day, “Abel, keep your room in order!” , “Abel, you can’t watch TV. Keep on studying!”

When my mother is in the k i tchen cooking, I l ike to look at what she is doing, but she invar iably says to me, “Abel , keep out of the way, please!” .

As you know, my sis ter Debra keeps gett ing up ear ly. So,

of course, she f in ishes her breakfast before I do. So, every morning my mother says to me, “Abel, hurry up! Don’t keep your s ister wait ing! I t ’s t ime to go to school. ”

In my school we have a very beaut i ful large garden; a

nice lawn, and lots of trees and f lowers. But we can’t enjoy i t , because there are signs everywhere saying: “Keep of f the grass!” “Keep out” , and so on.

Well, I th ink that the verb “ to keep” is another word that I

don’t l ike. The other words that I can’t stand are “should” , “ to let ” , and “ to al low”, as I have already told you. But please, don’t tel l anyone! Keep the secret .

Margaret wants to keep pet animals when we are

marr ied. She loves pet animals. I can’t understand her!

Pet animals are so useless! They only eat and sleep. And

they general ly make a terr ible noise. Bark ing dogs, for

example! And Margaret wants to keep a small dog!

I know smal l dogs! They bark f rom morning to night ! I

would go mad!

The other day I sa id to Margaret , “Why should I work to

buy food for useless animals? Now an animal that works is

di f ferent. A horse, for example.”

But Margaret just laughed and said, “But cats and dogs

and parrots don’t work! They are just pets!”

Well, I have a lready decided. There wi l l be no pets in my

- Tom knows very wel l that I love animals. So why does

he say that I can’t keep any pet animals af ter we are

marr ied? Why is he so unkind? And so rude, too!

He says that he wants peace in his house! Well , he can

have al l the peace that he wants. I am not ask ing for a l ion,

or a t iger, or an elephant, am I? I just want some dear l i t t le

pet animals: a pret ty l i t t le Pers ian cat , or a dear l i t t le funny

bark ing dog. When Tom and I marry, we’ l l buy a house with

a nice big garden. And I l ike to imagine a pret ty l i t t le dog -

or perhaps two pret ty l i t t le dogs - p laying there on the

grass. But every t ime that I speak about i t , Tom just

answers, “There wi l l be neither a dog nor a cat in my

house.”

Why does he talk to me l ike that? I t wi l l be my house too,

won’t i t? The t ruth is that he l ikes to quarrel.

And i t is a l l so r id iculous! He says that he loves animals

too! So why doesn’ t he want to have any animals in the

house?

I would l ike to have a pret ty l i t t le bird in every room. I t

would be so del ight ful to hear their sweet s inging al l day!

And then, as I said, I want to have one or two dear l i t t le

dogs - and a beaut i ful Persian cat . Oh, yes … but … the

cat would want to eat the poor l i t t le birds! … and the dogs

would f ight with the poor l i t t le cat ! Oh heavens! I ’m af raid

that Tom is r ight , when he says that there would be no

peace in the house i f we kept animals.

But what a p i ty! Well , I ’m certain ly not going to tel l Tom

that he is r ight! Oh, no! Never!

UNIT 28 18 (Tom and Margaret)

Wil l Tom and Margaret be happy when they are marr ied?

Who knows! They love each other very much, of course, but

already d isagree about many things, don’t they? And their

tastes are completely d i f ferent . Tom l ikes many th ings that

Margaret detests - boxing, for example. And he dis l ikes

many things that Margaret loves … museums, ar t gal ler ies,

shopping.

When they marry, I ’m af raid that they wi l l d isagree about

many other things too.

As you know, Margaret wants to keep a lot of pet animals

- a cat , two dogs, a parrot and some canar ies. Tom, on the

contrary, says that there wi l l be no pet animals in his

house.

Margaret wants to l ive in town, but Tom would l ike to l ive

in the suburbs, far f rom shops and noise.

Margaret wants to have a b ig house with at least four

bedrooms. Tom prefers to have a small house.

Margaret says that she wi l l need at least two domest ics,

to do the cooking, c lean the house and do the washing up.

“But you can clean the house and do the washing up,

can’t you?” says Tom, with a surpr ised express ion - “And

you can do the cooking, too.”

But Margaret has quite di f ferent ideas. She says that

st rong soap is bad for her hands. And as you al l know, she

can’t cook at al l .

Margaret says that Tom can do the gardening, but Tom

wants to keep a gardener.

waste of money. Tom thinks the same about keeping a cook

and a maid.

They of ten quarrel, as we a l l know. Their quarrels are

soon over, but they make Margaret cry, because she is very

sensit ive. When she cr ies, Tom is always terr ibly sorry

about al l the unkind things that he has said, and he

promises that he wi l l never quarrel again. But before the

day is over, they have quarrel led again at least two or three

t imes. W il l th ings be dif ferent af ter they marry? Perhaps.
