In 800 years, Berlin has grown from a small shing town seled along the River Spree toone of the most vibrant capital cies in the world. It has experienced large-scale expansion, endured the horror of major world wars and has struggled through polical turmoil - butthis fascinang history has undoubtedly shaped what Berlin is today, and what it willbecome in the future.

    BERLINS ESTABLISHMENT AS A CITY

Although the Brandenburg electors began residing in Berlin as early as 1415, it was notunl the reign of Elector Frederick William I (1640 -1688) that major changes began totake place in the city. His desire for religious toleraon and immigraon meant that around

44,000 French Huegenots seled in Germany, and by the turn of the 18th

century, much ofBerlins populaon were French-speaking. Fredericks encouragement to develop the cityalso led to the establishment of Dorotheenstadt, and later, Friedrichstadt. This expansionconnued under Frederick I of Prussia (1701 - 1713), who made Berlin the ocial RoyalCapital and united it with its neighbor, Clln.

    REVOLUTION IN BERLIN

The reign of Frederick II (1740 - 1786) saw Berlin become a city very much in tune with theEnlightenment movement that was spreading across Europe. As a known member of theFreemasonry, and a monarch who advocated change, he provided a stepping-stone for thetransformaon that was to come to Berlin in the nineteenth century.

Aer the defeat of Napoleon, who had briey occupied Berlin, followed both theestablishment of the citys rst university, Humboldt University and of the rst eleconsfor Berlins parliamentary members. In 1871, Berlin became the capital of the newlyestablished German Empire, leading to the construcon of the Reichstag in 1884. Followingthis, the Industrial Revoluon boosted both Berlins economy and its populaon, and in1896 the development of the U-bahn began.

    WORLD WAR I

The future for Berlin looked promising - yet within 50 years of rapid progress, warimpoverished the people. Starvaon and strikes spread across the streets, worseneddramacally by the reparaons demanded by the Treaty of Versailles. The situaonbecame so atrocious that Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated, leading to the formaon of theWeimar Republic in 1918. For years, the Socialist party and the Communist party were atloggerheads with one another: the Spartacist revolt, a crisis in which the Communist partyaempted to seize power, exemplied the polical unrest within Berlin. However, maersbrightened in 1924, when nancial agreements were made with the Allied Forces so thatthe city could grow into a cultural capital once again.

THE RISE OF HITLER AND THE PERSECUTION OF JEWS

1929 saw the Naonal Socialist party gain its rst seats in parliament and in 1933, Hitler

Then... became Chancellor of Germany. The Third Reich was established and the Nazi regimeset about instung its will: the persecuon of Jews began. Laws were wrien thatintenonally isolated the Jewish populaon, and events such as the Kristallnacht saw alegalized aack on their synagogues, businesses and homes. Many Jews chose to ee fromthe country, whereas others were hunted down and shipped o to concentraon campssuch as Auschwitz, in Poland.

Soon aer Hitlers polical rise, bombs once again hit the citys buildings and houses. TheSecond World War led to the collapse of the Nazi rule and in 1945 Hitler commied suicide, leaving Berlin to be divided up between the US, the UK, the Soviet Union and France. TheUS, French and UK took states in the West of Berlin, while Soviet control of the East wasbrutal: the Soviets wrecked all industry within Berlin as reparaons for the damage of thewar. Yet the powers themselves became divided, especially with the duraon of the ColdWar. Soon enough, relaons between the East and the West began to wither.

    THE BERLIN WALL

In 1961 the communist government of the East began to build the wall that separatedEast Berlin from West Berlin. While it was possible for some cizens from the West toleave Germany, the East Berliners, due to the strict restricons of the Soviet Union, could no longer travel. For almost 30 years, the two sides of Berlin were split up withoutcommunicaons to one another, so families and friends were divided and trade shut o.Yet, aer many years, something unthinkable happened: the access to the other side of thewall was opened. Due to a mistake in press interviews, Gnter Schabowski, in 1989, madean accidental statement that allowed people to leave East Berlin. Within hours, crowdspushed their way to the control points of the wall, ghng to get to the front. Schabowskiserror was a polical mistake that changed the lives of many people for the good; Berlinersfrom both East and West rejoiced at the news. In 1990, Berlin was reunited with Germanyso that it became the ocial capital once more.

    BERLIN TODAY

Aer the deceit of polics for years, the Reichstag has been redesigned: in 1999 it wasconverted into a glass dome, a metaphor for the fact that the people will never be lied toagain. It has become a large-scale tourist aracon and has its own restaurant. Over theyears, Berlin has grown into a city that, although is at the forefront of cultural and arscdevelopments in Europe, will never forget its history. G.C.

...And NowIf we lived in a backwards world, the streets of Berlin would be empty, devoid of cars, cyclists and pedestrians with none of the excitement or creave energy that the citycurrently possesses. No leaders of men would have come and uered great lines aboutreunicaon and ending conicts. No wars would have begun, no walls erected, nofamilies or lovers separated. This is not the Berlin we see today. To provide detail and context into this city of 3.45 million inhabitants you would ideally

need an encyclopedia. For this more humble aempt, it is perhaps more useful to talkabout what this city isnt. This however, would be too short an arcle so well bypass thismore original method and start forwards once again, briey underscoring what Berlin wasand delving into what it is today. What it was is a place that reected, perhaps beer than any other city in the enreworld, exactly what was happening in the 20th century. Nowhere are the struggles andtriumphs of humanity eshed out in greater detail than here, in Berlin. This has notchanged.Today Berlin is regarded as one of the hippest, most happening places in the enre world. From its famous historic landmarks to its notoriously rapturous nightlife, Berlin hasbecome a mecca for tourists of all stripes in all seasons. A place where the party neverstops and the Pilsner never stops owing, Berlin is also at the heart of the Euro zone andat the forefront of all that comes to pass in the whole of Europe polically as well. The city itself is massive. Four mes the size of Paris, Berlin is separated into twelvedistricts, each oering the usual array of shops, eateries, bars and nightclubs. Eachdistrict takes on a life and personality of its own. Prenzlauer Berg is known for its relaxed, alternave culture whereas Mie is known somewhat as the citys cultural and historicalcenter. Kreuzberg is seen as a trendy, fashionable melng pot while Charloenburgis famous primarily for its posh palaces and Friedrichshain for its working class

neighborhoods and world-class nightclubs. While the city may appear rather ordinary from the tour bus, a closer look will revealthe breathtaking collage of life and colour that the city has pulsang beneath its mutedexterior. You dont have to go into one of Berlins colossal cathedrals to be reborn here.Youll nd Berlin not in the glass obelisk of the Reichstag, nor in the foundaons of theBrandenburg Gate, nor in one of its many fascinang and historic museums. These placesare all useful in dissecng its storied struggles, its bier regrets and its limitless potenal;but to nd Berlin presently, you have to meet its people. It is only then, over a pint or anEis Schokolade, that we can truly come to grips with what Berlin is now and how, in thisme, we can experience what it is to become a Berliner once again. BM

Prenzlauer BergYoure in Prenzlauer Berg, the most beauful district in Berlin. This is the Paris ofBerlin. So says the owner of Zula- Hummus in Berlin. Looking around the stunning,tree-lined district of Prenzlauer Berg, it is hard to disagree with the Hummus mansrst asseron. For nowhere in Berlin are you as likely to feel so blissfully European ashere, in Kollwitzplatz, the heart of Prenzlauer Berg. The weekend market that takesplace here bears this out absolutely. From venders selling homemade jams and juices

to crasmen and women oering homemade jewelry and leather goods, this is theplace that embodies all that Europe is and represents. As for whether or not Prenzlauer Berg is typically Parisian, one would be moreinclined to call it Nong Hill-esque, as in the posh London borough. But strollingKollwitzstrasse at midnight, the idea of Paris doesnt seem so far away at all. Thelights of Caf Anna Blume are sll aglow at this me, the occasional patron steppingup to the ower shop-cum-cafs cake display and poinng through the glass tothe slice of godliness they wish to purchase. Other than streetlights, most of thesurrounding area seems quiet, only the so wisul sound of a few scaered patronsmunching on cake or sipping on hot chocolate coming to the ears. Here they whilethe me away, waing for the lights of dawn to bring the sleepy district to life onceagain. When the morning comes youll nd, further down o Oderberger Strasse, a queueout front of Bonanza Coee Heroes. This is where youll nd the best laes andcappuccinos that Berlin has to oer, with enough unique and interesng variees tosee you coming back through your stay. On the same street, just a lile ways down, youll nd Kauf Dich Glcklich. This lile toy store/wae and ice cream gallery oersthe best waes to be found in the whole of the city and a bright, decadent interior inwhich to enjoy them.

If you connue north up Oderberger Strasse, youll come to Mauer Park where eachand every Sunday venders unveil Berlins biggest market. Come together with throngsof sweaty locals to peruse the countless stands where you will nd everything frombicycles to vintage clothing to rare and out of date records. Aer you grow red ofporing over every type of item known to man, sele down to listen to the brave, orperhaps merely foolish, individuals try their hand at singing before the assembledmasses. For dinner, head east, to Schnhauser Allee where at I Due Forni you can savor themost scrumpously orgasmic pizzas you are likely ever to nd, all served to you by arag tag gang of Italian punks. When the sun drops from the sky and it is once again midnight in Prenzlauer Berg, the district seemingly untouched by the heavy hand of me, you will know that youare not in Paris or some posh London borough, but are in Berlin. And really, whywould you want to be anywhere else? BM
