Ms. Sran finishes her Master's Degree

Kirby Arn P. Alducente

After being an instructor in the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) since 2007, Ms. Manwinder K. Sran graduated in her Master's Degree in Business Administration last July 31, 2009.

Ms. Sran is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in Our Lady of Fatima University. During her first year of teaching in the college, she handled Advanced C Computer Programming, Quality Consciousness, Habits and Process, Digital Electronics and Logic Design, Computer Literacy, Artificial Intelligence, and Systems Resource Management.

She believes that taking her Master's Degree made her more mature, for she acquired self-confidence especially when she was doing her thesis.“Ang entrance exam ang pinaka-madali kasi I.Q test lang. She told CURSOR that her family and friends became her strength in pursuing her career, especially her father, Mr. Jagroop S. Sran.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed last September 6, 2008, by the University Officials of Bulacan State University (BulSU) and Kansai University (KU), has shown its effectiveness, as another set of Japanese students and administrators visited BulSU again.

Thru the efforts of Dr. Victoria Valenzuela, CICT and Graduate School Faculty, bonds of friendship between the two universities continue to strengthen by having an exchange of students yearly. For this year, Ryota Yamamoto and Ayako Morishima have arrived in BulSU last July 28, 2009 and are expected to stay until the 29th of August. The first group of students composed of Hiroki Takana, Takamasa Yabauuchi, Yuhide Fujita, Shintaro Mikuni, Seiichi Hirakawa and Yojiro Takamoto followed last August 3 and will be with Ayako and Ryota until the 21st of August. With them are eight students from Kansai University’s Faculty of Foreign Language. Siori Veda, Shinno Homma, Maasa Yoneda, arrived at BulSU last August 9, while Ryota, Ayako and 13 more individuals will come back to the Philippines on September 2-5, with Dr. Kenichi Kubota, Professor from KU.

These Japanese students will be promoting Information and Communications Technology (ICT) education in the country. They aim to have ICT utilization in classes through a series of seminars about Microsoft PowerPoint at Santissima Trinidad and Bulihan Elementary School. This is also their way of sharing their knowledge, culture and experiences to the Filipinos. Third year BSIT students under Dr. Valenzuela will also participate in the said activities and accompany the Japanese in their stay in the University.

From being a joint partner of the College of Santos, about 741 books, 546 titles, and 741 volumes Science (CS) library, the College of Information are currently in the CICT Library. Some of which and Communications Technology (CICT) has now were donated by CICT Parents-Teachers Association a library of its own, which is located at the 4th (PTA), Society for the Welfare of Information floor of the Academic Building. BIT-CompTech and BSIT Program Enjoy

Better Curriculum Myron M. Punzalan

Fast trend of Modern Age is directly proportional to the demands of individuals who are knowledgeable in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) today. As a response, CICT unveils the effectiveness of the new curriculum to its offered programs, the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) and Bachelor in Industrial Technology Major in Computer Technology (BIT-CT).

Three years ago, BSIT program implemented its new program. In fact, 3rd year students undergo classes in Web Development this semester, while 4th year students requested it to be added in their subject. According to Mrs. Ivy Bernardino, graduates of this new curriculum will be the first batch who knew several programming languages, which is highly demanded in the industry these days. In the preceding semester, these students will also learn Network Programming, Software Engineering, and Software Engineering for Embedded Systems, Advanced Assembly Language Programming, Intro to Mass Communication and Foreign Language that are not present in the old program.

Whereas for BIT-CompTech students, they will also be taught of Web Development during their 2nd year and Fundamentals of Research on their 3rd year, that they can utilize in doing their thesis writing.

Both new programs of CICT are revised to update the knowledge of students so as to meet the standards in the field of ICT.

New sets of officers for the Parent-Teacher Association of the College of information and

Communications Technology (CICT) were elected last August 7, 2009.The program started through an invocation and the singing of the national anthem with the use of

Microsoft PowerPoint prepared by the incumbent officers. After that was an opening remark delivered by Dr. Fausto S. Hilario, in which he emphasized the accomplishments and improvements made by the college for the past years. “Education is a lifelong process”, he added.

Mrs. Virginia Bojos, President of the PTA, presented the different projects that they have made in their term. Four page issue of their accomplishment were also given to parents who attended the meeting.

Election rites followed thereafter. Mrs. Bojos won as PTA President for the third time. Elected Vice Presidents for 2009-2011 were Jose Antonio Lee and Francisco Flores, Raquel Adriano and Lourdes Castelo for Secretary, for Treasurer they have Rose Marie Bautista and Florentino Tenorio, Engr. Noemi Pascual for PRO. Auditor is Jose Gallardo and the Business Managers are Rene Deandicho and Ludivina Lajom.

These new officers will have their oath taking and a tribute to the past set of officers on September 10, 2009 at 10am at the BSU Hostel. Mr. Al Tengco will be invited as the guest speaker.

Five LCD Projectors were donated by the CICT-PTA LCD Projectors, an Effective headed by Mrs. Virginia Bojos, President of the organization.Medium for Instruction

The building, constructed for the College of Law (COL) became a blessing for the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) students, for the entire span of rooms located on the 2nd floor of the edifice was granted to them as additional rooms.

Dr. Fausto S. Hilario announced the good news after his graduation for his Doctoral Degree. He said that he always aspires to provide the best for the CICT and its facilities, as there is continuous increase in the college's population. CICT students started using these new classrooms since the opening of classes this semester. The 2nd floor is composed of 4 computer rooms and 1 academic room. Students who undergo classes in the building asserted that the rooms are well-ventilated, thus, conducive to their learning. Dr. Hilario still has plans for the new building and hopes to implement it with the help of the CICT Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) and other recognized organizations of the college.

Since Law students conduct classes only during afternoon, the rooms were also used by other colleges of the university such as the College of Home Economics (CHE) and College of Engineering (COE).

Dean Hilario appointed as Co-Chairman of the Bulacan Information and Communication Technology Council (BICTC)

Executive Order No. 08 attested Dr. Fausto S. Hilario to be the newly appointed Co-Chairman of Bulacan Information and Communication Technology Council (BICTC) duly signed by the Provincial Governor, Joselito R. Mendoza effective March 2009.

“The BICTC opens the gate towards better communication and better working harmony with the key players of the ICT industry. We would like to prove that Bulacan must not be left behind when it comes to Information Technology (IT). Our main thrust is to entice IT players through providing an investment-friendly environment for them and that is to promote Bulacan as an IT center of the Region.” said Dean Hilario in an interview.

Recognized as the biggest potential source of investment and employment in Bulacan, Governor Mendoza created the BICTC to achieve the main goal of providing an enabling policy, legal and regulatory environment for the growth and development of the ICT industry as stated in the Executive Order.

Furthermore, BICTC is a collaborative council of the academe, key players, stakeholders and government for promotion and continued growth and development of ICT in the province. To be specific, its composition includes mainly the Chairman:Provinc ia l Governor, Co-Chairman: Representative from the Academe (BulSU) as appointed by the Governor and its members, categorized into four areas:

a) Academe comprised of the different public and private colleges and universities in Bulacan; b) Service Provider consists of the Area Manager/Head of Telecommunications Company and Real Estate Chapter President in Bulacan Chapter;

c) Key Players includes the different call center services and other company; and

d) Concerned Government & Non-Government Agencies/Offices such as the TESDA, and CHED The BICTC is expected to perform the following functions:

1.To formulate, recommend and implement policies and programs on the ICT Industry development;

2.To provide a venue where ICT stakeholders could communicate their concerns and problems and make or recommend necessary actions;

3.To synchronize programs of each stakeholder in the industry for the effective and efficient implementation;

4.To prepare policy/advocacy papers and endorse the same to appropriate agencies for action;

5.To promote Bulacan ICT potentials thru various promotional tools and activities;

6.To recommend amendments to policies, laws and regulations if deemed necessary;

7.To access technical or financial assistance from outside sources;

8.To monitor and evaluate commitments in the completion of ICT program/projects in Bulacan; and

9.To evaluate performance of the ICT sector.

It was during the BulSU General Meeting held at the Valencia Hall last July 5, when the University President, Dr. Mariano C. De Jesus announced publicly that Dean Hilario is the appointed Co-Chairman of the BICTC.

“Honestly I was not expecting that. I am very overwhelmed with that privilege of being designated by our University President, even just imagining the prestige that goes with it, the trust of the Governor to the BulSU and me, being the representative of Bulacan to the Cebu ICT 2009 Conference. I am really honored.” he commented.

As the council gears up for targeting the four-year ICT action plans for Bulacan's ICT Industry. Dean Hilario accentuated the advantages of the BICTC in the sphere of the academe.

“There are lots of advantages concerning the academe. The first one is the strengthening of the IT programs offered in the different universities in Bulacan through the parallelism of the curriculum. We are really concerned in producing competitive graduates through melting the gaps between what is taught in school and the needs of the industry.” he added.

Auspiciously, the National Information and Communication Technology Council (NICTC) perceives three main spots of ICT revolution in Bulacan. The first one is in Guiguinto on where the Main MRT Office might be built, in Bocaue where a Call Center Infrastructure will most possibly be constructed and the Malolos Capitol as the center of ICT in Bulacan.

“We will definitely achieve these plans through maintaining the peace and order in Bulacan and a clean government with no red tape.” Dean Hilario ended with a strong conviction.

After being the guest speaker in the recent Commencement Exercises last April 2009, Mayor Danilo Domingo donated P100, 000 to the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT).

The donation is in the form of check which was given to Dr. Fausto S. Hilario through Mayor Domingo's assistant last June. Dr. Hilario said that 80% of the money that the CICT has received is intended for the library like ICT books and a printer and the rest was used for buying medicine cabinets, medicines and other materials in preparation for the Level 1 Accreditation.

Mayor Domingo is expected to come in the opening program for the upcoming CICT Accreditation on August 18, 2009. Dr. Hilario insisted that this will be an opportunity for the CICT Family to thank him. The Dean said that he wants to utilize all the money for the mean time and a thank you letter will be given to Mayor Domingo with all the receipts and pictures where the money has been spent.

Many students are just familiar with the word Accreditation, but not exactly the true meaning of it. As CURSOR interviewed Dr. Fausto S. Hilario, Dean of the CICT, he said that the Accreditation will determine the status of the college concerning different areas namely the VMGO (Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives) for Area I, Faculty (Area II), Curriculum and Instructions (Area III), Support to Students (Area IV), Research (Area V), Extension and Community Involvement (Area VI), Library (Area VII), Physical Plant and Facilities (Area VIII), Laboratories (Area IX), and the Administration (Area X). The said much awaited event for CICT will be conducted by the Accrediting Agency of the Chartered Colleges and University of the Philippines (AACCUP).

Going back to the Preliminary Survey Visit last October 1-3, 2007, CICT surpassed the initial 2.5 grade mean after BSIT and BIT-CompTech Program gained 3.04 and 3.02 respectively.

For now, Dr. Hilario is very much positive that the college will pass the First Formal Survey Visit through the help of the faculty and students, who have a big part in the said event. He also envisioned being in-line with those established colleges in BulSU like the College of Engineering (COE), College of Education (COEd), and the College of Industrial Technology (CIT), who are now Level 3 accredited.

The Doctor is In: A long and winding road towards more success

Dr. Fausto S. Hilario

A short but an undeniable inspiring phrase from our beloved Dean; Hon. Fausto S. Hilario Ed.D that will surely melt every students' heart and make them feel how important and knowledgeable education is and how much it builds self satisfaction to one's heart, mind, and definitely soul.

For the second time around, with my hands full of energy to write about him even if I got so nervous because of the pressure and expectation I must surpass, on this humble page, cursor team wants to acknowledge the efforts and perseverance of a man behind an everlasting bond within our college, a man that portraits not only a good professor but a father and friend for us, a man whose dreaming of a simple and peaceful life with his family, most especially with his wife. But behind the simplicity he possesses, is an enthusiastic and brilliant person. As he finished his doctoral degree, let us all congratulate him for this great achievement in his career and know his heartfelt feelings after he got his third diploma on his field.

On the 23rd day of May year 2009, our Dean together with his wife, Mrs. Hilario who also graduated with her Masteral's degree, stepped in with full determination and self fulfillment inside our university's gymnasium to finally get their Doctoral and Master's Degree diploma after a long and winding struggle they encountered along their way to finally achieve a goal that they were longing for.

Our Dean, together with other professionals who are also degree holders, treated himself as the happiest person inside the four corners of the arena where all the BulSU graduates finished their college life, with his wife on his side, their three offspring, Niño Angelo, Iana Christine and Lara Beatrice who was there to support and witness the achievement of their parents; with the undying trust of his colleagues/friends, and with his college that sees him as its own pride, he will truly feel beloved and be thankful to the things he now have.

Journey towards the peak of his success…

At ang inumin namin ay POSOCOLA!” then he laughed. And with excitement he continued, Di din ako sumasakay tulad ng mga estudyante ngayon, 5 kilometro ang binibisekleta ko araw-araw! LIFE WAS SO HARD, he added.

Big things really start from small beginnings, but I guess being a professional is innate in him, a consistent honor student, a valedictorian and a scholar. The man that was really a time management expert, for he doesn't believe in “Walang Oras” for him everything can be done with the right time management. He has so many responsibilities but to waste his time is a double stupidity for him. He doesn't want to spend his day or even his weekend without doing anything, he always set priorities and plans everything before the day starts. A VERY HARD-WORKING

The Doctor is in…...CICT

Dean Hilario is a successful man in the field of Education; he does the best possible job under pressure. According to him, the most difficult part of passing his Doctoral Degree is to sustain the expectation of others! “The expectation is higher, so I am pressured”,

Japanese and Koreans usually commit suicide when they fail expectation. What is the good thing with Filipinos is they know how to handle pressure. One proof is none other than Dean Fausto Hilario

“Because of personal reasons!” he quickly answered after asking why he took up his doctoral degree. Our Dean is now a Doctor in Educational Management after passing His oral examination, called “Dissertation”. It's a requirement for His position as a Dean and it is also a recommendation of the accreditors during last ACCREDITATION-2007. But He stressed, “The reason is not only because it is required but it's my personal ambition, for my personal satisfaction and fulfillment of my own dreams”.

Finishing the Doctoral Degree is one of the dreams of those that are in the field of education because it enhances the capabilities of an educator. That's what we call a real professional. His future plans

And now he's planning to take the Doctor in Public Administration-a man that thirsts for recognition and satisfaction-a man who never stops on dreaming and who prays and believe in God . . . now he is not just a man but a successful man in the field of Education. “All I want is to become a successful teacher, not a Dean . . . but it happened. I feel fulfilled!” MALAY MO MAGING PRESIDENTE AKO NG BSU, he added with a smile. For him it's his destiny, to become a leader. Then he became serious and says, “Kaya galit ako sa mga nagbubulakbol at nagsasayang ng oras, naranasan ko ang hirap ng buhay, baka di ka na bigyan ng 2nd chance ni Lord at ng magulang mo”. Study, be the best that you can be . . . for teachers, love your work! You are all fortunate because you're living in the modern world with modern technology, so easy to research! And I am disappointed because students now use technology in different wrong ways; Technology was not invented to be used in that way. He strictly said, “Use technology properly with a right manner”. Then he ends up, “Do not waste your time . . . because The Only Permanent in this world is Change!”

Plans for the CICT Family

For having more applicants in CICT as compared to before, expectations are much greater and it's a challenge for our Dean according to him. Good facilities and fully trained instructors assure the students that they will never get disappointed regarding the quality of education we have. As long as possible, Doctor Hilario will be giving his support and effort to boost the CICT popularity in the university. Nothing is impossible if everyone has their dedication and goal for the college they belong to. In fact, we have a nice result for the last accreditation. CICT gears up for Accreditation level 1. This semester, comes another chance of proving the academic standing of our college, which is why our Dean is now preparing not just for himself but also for the CICT.

STUDENT! It's how he described himself.

“My first two years in BSIE, I ALSO CRIED, BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO BECOME A TEACHER. I desired to be a medical doctor ever since but so much financially impossible… I have no choice kaya pinagbuti ko na rin, kung pinilit ko magsasaka ako ngayon”. And now dean Hilario say no more to his dream of becoming a medical doctor. But he encourage his 2 offspring to pursue his dream, “takot sa dugo eh” he said while laughing. But he doesn't lose hope, as always, “My youngest daughter, maybe she can pursue my dream”.

A must seen philosophy behind him..

“Do not lose hope; Poverty is not a hindrance to success”. He always tells us about this important matter. Since most of us Filipinos are experiencing a hard life, living with a half-empty stomach and hungry mind . . . and a poor-cold justice! We might cry and we might give up. . But with a smile, with hope, with prayers, I agree, we can have the success!

“I also want to leave a good legacy to the Hilario Clan, which are all professional and the Most Outstanding Family in Guiguinto, Bulacan year 2005, and of course dito sa CICT, sa Faculty, I want to be a one-level higher. . At least one level higher, di pwedeng magkaka-level”. Every word that comes from him is really a great source of inspiration. He proved that everything he says are realities of life… that just like you; He also started with a dream and is continuously living with so many dreams.

It has been said that quality is better than quantity and a measure of success of a person does not only goes with how many achievements he had but more of the impact of these achievements not only to himself but to his fellow men.

A story was once told about a boy who was asked by his friend if he thinks his mother's burger is better than McDonald's. Indeed a tough question that seeks for a tough answer. And with this, he answered, “Does it mean that only because McDonald's produces more hamburgers will justify that they are better than my mom's burger? A burger prepared with all her love and care?” This anecdote has been a classic example of how important quality is against the usual connotation that quantity is better.

As man move forward and mature through time and experiences, the more he understands that quality can never explained in one statement or two. It is a never ending quest to understand what it means.

These past few weeks, students have noticed the different 'aura' that continues on emanating from the College. The vigor that can be found in everyone's action and a little bit of tension that comes along with it. But what is with the hustle and bustle? The College is now taking another step forward an achievement through the Accreditation.

The word “accredit” according to a dictionary means: to recognize (an educational institution) as meeting defined standards furthermore, by adding the suffix –ion, the word Accreditation will now mean as the act or process undertaken by an educational institution so as to become recognized as having met a set of defined standards. In simpler terms, ASSESS and RECOGNIZE an educational institution. This will serve as a gauge of the current system implemented and giving recognition to those who fulfill the needed requirements.

Accreditation is initiated and facilitated by a legitimate executive body that is composed of the worthy and elites when it comes to educational standards, coming from the much acclaimed Accrediting Agency of the Chartered Colleges and University of the Philippines (AACCUP).

So much has been said about the College development, improvement, and evaluation, but the question lies behind these is that what is the real meaning of “quality”?

Quality can be directly defined as; a grade or degree of excellence; a trait, characteristic or attribute. To do something using high quality methods is doing it in excellence, and this EXCELLENCE is the much sought after jewel of the College through the endless efforts of every element. The CICT has been active in the accreditation process and has been very supportive in working towards the achievement of quality education through the process of program accreditation.

However, another question rolled in mind is that, what is the real meaning of “quality

education? And how do the College will achieve this?”

Education is a continuous process of discovering new things and it does not end in the four-cornered walls of the school. That is why the Cursor drawls out the important collaboration of the different elements of the College and these elements are the vital organs of the College to keep moving. This fact opens the door of realization that the success of the College's does not solely depends on the ratings but more of how the elements work together as a family in achieving a common goal.

The Publication firmly believes that doing something in excellence is better than a multitude of finishing substandard tasks. Knowing the importance of the College

evaluation through the Accreditation as an assessment of quality, it has been an apparent and undeniable fact that the College's quality and development does not solely gauge through the ratings but the real essence of it can be wholly traced in the participation of the elements that embodies the College as a whole.

The College since its establishment is continuously aiming for development, an endless chase for improvement that ever since does not come in a silver platter for it is a continuous process that entails keen preparations to achieve the greater heights of widening the spectra involve therein. There will always be rooms for progress. This is rather true, for the reason that everything undergoes a state of change. But changes is only possible through actions.

It is true that having excellence in terms of quality is great, but this quality is not just

about achieving high rates when it comes to documentation, functional and state-of the-art facilities and equipment…it goes deeper than that, behind the progress and improvement of every aspect of the College is its underlying elements; the faculty, staff, and each and every student of CICT. Each plays a vital role in maintaining the momentum of progress, and the equilibrium of things. Having the right ATTITUDE and VALUES is necessary to prosper continuously. Each role, however small or big they may be is needed to complete the much sought “puzzle”. The fate of the College does not rest on the shoulders of one individual; not only in a group of selected individuals; but to all entities of the CICT family. T h e b u r e a u c r a c y o f T E A M W O R K , COOPERATION and UNITY is much accentuated to make the vision, mission and goal a reality.

The parody of the real quality and success lounges in the initiative of everyone to help one another in achieving a specific goal.

PRESS I.D

If I were given a chance to pursue the career that I prefer, surely, I would not be in CURSOR for three years now. I would not be inclined with different programming languages and databases which make my hair curly at present. I would not be able to interview such big companies and introduce them new systems that will replace their traditional manual operations; instead, I would be a Mass Communication Student who knows the different fields concerning Journalism.

Eight years of my life was indulged in Campus Journalism. I started as an Editorial Writer, then a News Writer, a Photojournalist, an Editor-in-Chief of my high school publication, a Staff Writer in my 1st year college, Managing Editor, Interim News Editor, and after losing my membership for one semester, I was appointed as the News Editor of the present Editorial Board of CICT College Publication, CURSOR. Undeniably, those 8 years had given me so many experiences which lead me to some realizations and lessons to ponder upon. If you're one of those students who visit our office in the student center, you will think we are just performing simple work. You will see our happy faces, hear our jokes, and even see us surfing the internet. You will think that we're just spending some time in the office because it's nice there. Maybe you're one of those students who notice another ID which is bigger than our normal student ID. It has the word “PRESS” in the lower portion of it. Some of my classmates even PRESS that ID, and for some reasons, they would say, “wala namang nangyayari eh”.

SPOTLIGHTNelsielene S. dela Paz

I remember how the Filipinos mourned after the death of the woman considered as the “Ina ng Demokrasya”, President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino. Everything that she has made for the Filipinos were recognized especially the return of the Democracy in the Philippines. It is true that the first beneficiary of this sovereignty is the mass media. FREEDOM OF THE PRESS is indeed the most influential factor to people which guided him in everyday life. Freedom which provokes journalists to deliver the appropriate news that will arouse people's awareness. For us in CICT, the student publication has become the eye of the students to the different happenings in their environment. The existence of CURSOR have proven that BSIT and BIT-CompTech students are not just concentrated with software and hardware applications but also involved in Campus Journalism. Those students who prepared themselves to serve their colleagues by making their sentiments published.

Indeed, our CURSOR Identification Card has gone a long way for the students. It's not that we're boasting our membership, but it is our identity of how we will face people, event, and issues in which students has to be involved. It is our identity to promote the essence of freedom, the essence of leadership and the essence of responsibility. The PRESS I.D which they literally think of pressing the word is actually the I.D that gave way to gain awareness through Campus Journalism. Of course, I am proud that I am back, SPOTLIGHT rules again.

Heart of the SPY

Paul Mark S. Panillo

Natahimik ako at nag-isip “TAMA BA TALAGA?”

INTREPIDUSIvy S. Martinez

Eeni Meeni Miini Moh

uniporme at naetsapwera 'yung isa.

My Enveloped Ideas…An Optical Illusion…

I have packed my things early in the morning. Pen, notes, books, cellphone, ID, wallet and my… Class Record.

After I have met a lot of cobwebs in my head, now I am still here, traveling the familiar path again, the same street, and the same jeepney route I have been through for almost four years. But the difference is, the days of my sleepless nights and all the struggles as a student that almost gulped me in whole are all gone.

In front of the class, while I was still occupied by my own non-preemptive thoughts, I was suddenly brought to reality when a student approached me, “Ma'am?”

It is so hard to suppress a kind of is-this-real smile that time. Yes, I am now a teacher…another paradigm shift in my life.

Indeed BECOMING a teacher is much easier than BEING one. For anyone might live as a teacher in title but the one who portrays the life of a true educator is the only one who truly knows its essence and value. Becoming a teacher is living a life outside of a plastic bubble, it is more of an inevitable fact that teaching is not only one of the noblest professions but the most challenging also. Being a teacher is like living with the unique story of odium, trepidation, and strength, it is a story of life itself and how to live it well according to purpose. Teacher must be as creative as a stockpile of books and lesson plans and as innovative as the technology. Being a teacher is like being a psychologist dealing with diverse patients suffering from diverse personality disorders and these facts become more apparent to me as I apply this in handling my students. It's not a simple profession to earn a living, it's much more than that, it's a mission, a passion, a drive… a call that you cannot turn your back off.

Aside from the curriculum, facilities, and laboratories, there are important LIVING elements in CICT that serves as the most important building blocks of the College's development — the people behind the success, the administrator, the parents, the students and the FACULTY.

True, so many books were published about content competencies, methods and strategy in teaching but it failed to pinpoint one important thing about a teacher and that is his – human dimension. It's about the factors that others find so inspirational. As what Albert Einstein said, the human situation here on earth is a real strange thing, but from the standpoint of daily life there is something that human are certain, and that is man is here for the sake of other men. Furthermore, according to the book “On Being a Teacher” '…teaching is the kind of job in which you need collegial support in order to survive, much less to flourish. It is imperative that you feel as though you belong to a group of peers who share your values and interests and most of all—whom you can trust. Stress effects from other sources are magnified tenfold if your collegial relationships are less than supportive.' To put it in a nutshell, human co-exists with each other as how a faculty builds its own support group inside the Faculty Room.

It is quite ironic that I now become a part of the College and on top of that is the fact that I am now one of the teachers where in fact, I have became an oddball during my stay as a student. Through my sharp-pointed pen, I drew my depiction of what a teacher must be and must not be only to realize just now that you can never really tell a lot about a thing, unless you try to be in it. Like when you want to know what is sweet and what is bitter, you need to taste it. Same as you can never really tell that

your shoes fit unless you try it in. With this in mind, another arena of thoughts runs within my mind. Sometimes, things in life are just an optical illusion; that sometimes we view it based on our mortal convictions rather than viewing the both sides of it. However, at most time, we are being blinded of the fact that we can only decipher its meaning by digging out the truths that lie beyond the first line of coating.

Before, it is in some way sounds satirical for me to hear this statement “Teaching in BSU is like an addictive drug.” No matter how you resist it—you really just can't. “Sa BSU ako nakakita ng mga totoong kaibigan beyond the corners of the school.” However, I now understand and somehow starting to see the bright side and not only the gray areas of being a CICT Faculty member.

After the reconnaissance period of my stay, there might be few things but major lessons that I realized on being a teacher: It might be true that not all teachers are good, but definitely not all teachers are bad and that you will meet true friends in times of adversity. Inside the Faculty Room, we are like stalls of clothes that represent different style, different fashion craze, and different accent of personality but despite the differences, each still finds the enchantment of having each other as a company because the friendship thawed out the divergences. Inside the CICT Faculty Room, I met both mentors and friends: when someone actually lend me all her teaching resources for my references, someone who taught me on how to use the photocopying machine and the sorting feature of that (after he noticed me doing a tedious manual copying of documents), when someone gave me a lot of inspirational advice before my first day as a teacher, when someone gave me a dessert because I really did not have enough time to eat lunch due to my schedule, when someone held my hand when I am encountering a stiff personal problem. I may not be familiar with them personally, they may not even my teacher before, but they taught me a great lesson of today. I also witnessed how the Faculty Association through its reelected set of officer stands for the welfare of their colleagues and how their actions and concerns strengthened the spirit of empathy within the group.

I remember a lesson in Psychology that we have the ability to choose our reactions or perception towards a person, so it is not basically true that first impression do lasts—it is only a psychological cliché. It goes with the thought that when a person only wants to see the coating, he is unconsciously building a wall between the usual connotation and discovery. Same as there are two ways on how you can view a glass filled with water. Is it half-filled or half-empty? Currently, I have down pat with the thought that laughing with the faculty, eating with them, sharing my ideas with them…and laughing at the things that made us weak inside is not really hard.

I am always telling my students, “Life is how you look at it, because things in life is how you view it.” I realized now why the Microsoft Windows has a shell, because there are two kinds of computer user: the one who cares about the functions and the one who cares about the anatomy of the program. That sometimes, you need to become a programmer or technical person before you understand the technical points, and the details of the system, the hidden hardships beyond its development. And that sometimes, you need to become a teacher to fully understand its essence and responsibilities.

The Faculty? --- They are the one who gives me the ink for my own marker as I continue my journey of learning as I venture another path with my CICT Family.

I SpeakJohanna R. Pineda, SWITS President

THE INNOVATIVE SWITS

As a student, does it satisfy you to go in and out of your classes daily? Do you get bored easily especially when waiting for your next class? Do you think you have leadership capabilities and want to make a difference in your school community?

If your answer is yes to my last question, I challenge you to be a SWITS Officer and to be an active SWITS member. What is SWITS?

The Society for the Welfare of Information Technology Students (SWITS) is one of the accredited student organizations in Bulacan State University since 2001. The SWITS has always been an organization by the students and for the students from the time it has been established. It aims to be a medium of all the IT students who are officially enrolled in Bulacan State University in nurturing their knowledge towards the technical awareness in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). It is a strong advocate of quality service aspiring to uphold the welfare of the IT enthusiasts and learners inhabiting within the eminent embodiment of student leadership and noteworthy ideas that is far more than the formal education could offer. It promotes a sense of responsibility to the students of Information Technology and encourages exploration of the momentous and dynamic world of technology. What can SWITS do for you?

Since SWITS is by the students and for the students. We focused entirely on your welfare. We provide seminars that are related in Information Technology such as Web Development, Flash, Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver. We give Php 10,000 every year for Intramurals to assist our CICT Student Players in their necessities such as food, uniform and equipments.

SWITS focuses also in our room environment to be more conducive to learning. Last year we provided cleaning materials, wall clocks, curtains, CPU covers and monitor covers. We believed that we need treat our classrooms like home since we spend most our time here. Because of the spirit of Christmas, we also launched the “SWITS Ko Lang”. This is a project where an IT student writes a letter to SWITS about a fellow IT student to make his Christmas a memorable one. SWITS provided a Noche Buena Package and Php 500 in cash.

SWITS Community Service

We are also involved in the community outside the school. SWITS launched the “SWITS gives back”. SWITS believed that we can help our unfortunate children by providing canned goods, bread, noodles, and clothing. Here are the following establishments:

LINGAP Center, a foundation that provides hope for children who have suffered from chi ld abuse, abandonment, neglect and exploitation.

TANGLAW, is a rehabilitation center for male under 24.

LEX, is a part of Bulacan Provincial Jail. What can you benefit from the SWITS office?

You can easily find the SWITS officers here. We have program installers available for the students such as Visual Basic 6, Turbo C and Photoshop. We also have printing services. What are the benefits of the SWITS officers?

SWITS officers earn new friends here. You meet different IT students and students from

Responsive to change

Everyday, I wake up, eat breakfast, take a bath, get dressed and go to school. In school, I'd spend hours sitting, listening and writing the lessons discussed. After class I'd go home. Sometimes, friends would invite me to go out and go somewhere we could relax and have fun. We would play DOTA for hours, wasting so much time, and spending so much money. This is the scenario everyday of my life. So, I asked myself, does my responsibility as a student end when the bell rings? Is studying all I have to do to be a so called good student? Or, is there something more?

There are many times I've asked myself, what should I do? What is my purpose? Then I came to realize, a student's responsibility doesn't end when you go out of the classroom. If you'd think about it, wearing the school uniform is one big responsibility because, it is not only yourself that you're carrying but, you are also representing the school itself. That ID that hangs on your neck, not only has your name on it, but, the university name as well. So, as a student, you should watch how you behave inside and outside the school premises. We would not want others to say bad things about the place that we consider our second home,

right? That is our responsibility to the university. It does not end here. We have classmates, friends and all those other members of the university. Believe it or not, we have responsibilities to them to.

There are organizations within the university that would help the students in many different ways. Joining one of these organizations could help the student know himself more and learn things that would help him fulfill his responsibilities to the whole organization, to the school and to himself. In the CICT the organization responsible for letting the students know about the college's activities and even of the whole university is the Cursor Publication. I believe that school organization such as the CURSOR is an integral part of a university. These kinds of groups usually carry out tasks, handle events and much more importantly, they act as the voice of the students.

Being a student does not necessary mean that you only need to study your lessons, get high grades then go to sleep at night. Being a student means that you are preparing yourself for the reality that you are a part of a whole. You are responsible for the things that you do. And your responsibility starts now.

different colleges during the activities, projects and seminars.

You get the privilege to use the SWITS equipments such as internet, PC, printer, school supplies and etc. You also earn freebies such as the organizational shirts, seminar fees are waived and many more. During the activities, foods are provided.

You gained initiative, self-confidence, leadership, public relation and professionalism. As an officer, a lot of teachers and students expect a lot from you. You will undergo a huge amount pressure. Be prepared and be confident on what you do.

At the end of the day after a busy day in the SWITS, you get this rewarding feeling that you cannot explain. Sometimes it is good, sometimes it is bad. But when you look back to all the things you have been through, you just cannot help but laugh. As The President

I challenge my officers to think outside the box. I want to come up with newer projects not just continuing the previous projects from the previous years. I want to make an impact to my community. When I finish my term as the president, I want to leave with confidence that SWITS is improving for the better. My challenge to You

I want to encourage you to be active in your organization. Do not judge the organization if you do not know the story behind it. Take an initiative and extend your helping hand to us. SWITS can always use a good helping hand. You cannot call an organization as an organization if it is only the officers who are working. Organization means the officers and the members as well.

Mama at Papa.

s a oras.
